Second Looks is clearly his baby: he's not just an attentive consultant, responding to your preferences on house, material, and tailoring (thankfully, he is not hesitant to offer his excellent suggestions on fit and styling), he's also a gentleman and a scholar, eager to share his considerable knowledge about the history of menswear, soul music, and rodeo, having been a cowboy himself before working in radio and taking over Second Looks. Michael's selection is fantastic. he showed me suits and separates from Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece, Drake's, Canali, and local Austin bespoke tailors Capra and Cavelli. He's got Allen Edmonds shoes and a great collection of belts, which seem to go very quickly. I didn't peruse his selection of casualwear, but it seemed just as well-curated and complete as his formal sections. I walked out with a Golden Fleece jacket and alligator belt having spent about $115--he gave me the educator discount. I couldn't have asked for better value. Having lived in Boston, Cleveland, Charleston, SC, Eugene, OR, Granada, Spain, and Norwich, England, I've never been so impressed by a menswear shop, let alone a secondhand store, or by its owner. I cannot believe that Marigold - Gateway to India was on S. Lamar when I lived on S. Lamar. Walking into the shop felt like being transported to Bangalore or Rajasthan, India. Marigold is rooted in vibrant color, texture, and uniquely Indian pieces. The overhead draped colorful cloth added to the ambience. The store offers a curated selection of Indian clothing, jewelry, accessories, and gifts. The quality and variety of the merchandise was immediately noticeable. From traditional and contemporary clothing for women, men, and children to unique accessories and decorative pieces, everything feels authentic. Lata, the owner, was super nice and welcoming! Julian Gold specializes in unique pieces sources in the United States and abroad. The store itself is visually appealing with floor to ceiling windows emitting tons of natural sunlight. In addition, the store is nicely laid out making it easy to peruse the racks and other items within the boutique. While this boutique could be considered high end, they do have very good sales. For example, during their Margarita sale some items sell for 70-75% off. When they were located on 6th Street, they used to serve margaritas during their margarita sales. Given that my shopping love language is sales and deep discounts, over the years I have found some incredible deals. As an example, a few years back, you could purchased a pair of shoes at 80% off during an end of season sale. Service is what sets Julian Gold apart from most boutiques. The sales representatives go out of their way to get to know you personally. Julian Gold has stores located in San Antonio and Corpus Christi, TX. They will happily transfer items in those stores to Austin, TX, if you make that request. In fact, when we lived Washington state, I visited the store every 1-2 years, but when I returned to Austin, they always greeted me warmly and by name.
