I mean, if you were to usually get this food in a restaurant it would easily be 3 to 4 dollars more than what you would be paying. That said, the portions are slightly smaller. But who wants huge portions some times at the restaurants if you are just going to take it home. You can also always have the chance of getting some hipster serving your food, it is the real Austin experience. The real gems however are when they have a dish for say $8 but you get two gourmet items. You might get a big bowl of blue cheese grits and huge slices of pork belly, which is the rich way to say BACON! They always have pork belly on the menu some how so you can pretty much bank on that. They change the menu daily which is so cool! It could be bad that you never know what your going to get, but here, its an experience. I never go because I like one dish. After just trying one dish, I am already a huge fan and can tell you that the food here is amazing. The ingredients picked and the way the food was prepared and ultimately presented made me feel like I was being presented a dish from an episode of Top Chef. The flavor profile for the ingredients are a bit out there but it worked harmoniously together. So you must be wondering what that one dish I tried at the Seedling Truck is? The one and only item I got was the polenta cake with poached egg and kale pesto and goat cheese -- doesn't that sound so "Top Chef" like? Seriously, you can't ever go wrong with egg yolk oozing all over your food and the kale pesto was absolutely delicious and helped tie the goat cheese with the rest of the dish. The only downside was probably, unfortunately, the under-cooked egg. If it could have been poached for a few more seconds, it would have been perfection. Next time I visit Austin, this food truck will be a top priority on my list! I can't even imagine what kind of surprises are packed in their menu. read more

Royal Fig started out in catering and now has their very own roving food truck that is always on the go popping up in different places with an ever changing menu of fresh seasonal comfort food. For lunch you might find Lobster Bisque or Pork Belly Chili with a few unique sandwich options. I had the Lobster Bisque when they were in the GSD&M parking lot for lunch and it was an amazing rich succulent brothy 5 stars and a steal at only 4.00! Every Saturday morning they are at the Barton Creek Farmers Market with an amazing brunch menu. Can I get an Amen for Bacon Cinnamon Rolls!!! and of course they sell out fast so I have yet to get to try it. This morning we decided on a Bacon Sandwich with fried egg and arugula and a Porchetta Sandwich with dandelion greens. The Bacon sandwich was something I could have made at home but the Porchetta was mind blowing salty porky yummyness (juicy like make the crusty bread soggy fatty). I've been to their main kitchen facility and met the exec chef. these are the type of people that are not taking shortcuts on food prep and ingredients. How the heck did they know exactly what I like? Pesto... undercooked eggs... grits... "local" products... goat cheese. The Seedling Truck honestly has one of the most attractive menus in Austin, not just for a trailer, but for all sorts of eateries. And it always finds its way in my proximity! I finally made my way over to TST to get some brunch at the HOPE FM. How was it? Let's just break down my one item, which at $5 may sound steep, but I assure you that everything bite was fully worth it. The aforementioned ingredients all combined to make a "grit cake with poached egg and kale pesto with goat cheese mess." Aside from the grits, which run abundant in the local market in the deep South (good ol corn mills), everything else was super local. So they took everything I liked and straight up elevated it. I love griddled things i.e. crab cakes, arepas, and they did one mean grit cake. On it sat a super runny, rich egg. Though the egg and grit cake were not salty enough for my taste, the kale pesto came to the rescue with a very strong garlic punch. Lastly, the tart and creamy goat cheese rounded out the slop. Though the ingredients and preparation were flawless, my favorite thing aspect of the experience was the lightness of the dish. Grits are usually (and most of the time BETTER BE) very cheesy and buttery; in this preparation, it did not need that richness. Pesto is often served with an abundance of heavy-sitting pasta; not here. Goat cheese finds its way into heavy cream sauces a good number of times. Poached eggs... don't these little guys usually sit under butter and egg yolk-rich Hollandaise? I used this in-depth review of my one item to really expound upon what TST has to offer: light food, tasty combinations, and fantastic sourcing. I wish I could get their menu via twitter before I head out to Draughthouse (they've been hanging out there for dinner on Thurs and Fri nights) but they really haven't failed to disappoint yet. I had a cold soup and some pork belly sliders during the summer. Last night I had the duck tostada, NOM NOM NOM with huge chunks of shredded duck all over it. The boy liked the butternut squash soup and quail, even though he did think the quail "tastes like chicken." This truck happened to be outside of the Draughthouse when a friend and I went to grab a couple beers. Ended up stealing the show. The menu is small, and from what I understand, ever changing based on availability and season. The portions are pretty small, so it's not a grub truck, it's a "appreciate this nice food with your nice beer" truck. When I saw the menu of this place, I had to try it. Short rib and truffle slider with gruyere? Pork liver terrine with tangerine marmalade? Steamed mussels with bone marrow butter? Out of a food truck, you say? We got the sliders and liver terrine. $5 a pop. Small portion size, like I said, but are you really going to try to fill up on pork liver? The sliders were tender and delicious, the pork liver was rich and fatty, and the tangerine marmalade was a nice touch to cut through the richness. Delicious, quality, small portions, almost like really high quality bar food or finger food - not for if you've got the munchies, but it works very well for bringing fancy food a bit of modesty. read more

I went to the farmer's market yesterday just to try this truck. For $7 I got a "bacon sandwich". It was a big hunk of roll with 1 egg and 1 slice of bacon. They tried to trick me by cutting the bacon into three pieces, but I saw right through the ruse - it was in fact just 1 egg and 1 slice of bacon. For 7 bucks. Wow! I tried this trailer (located on Barton Springs Rd near Shady Grove) twice in the last week and have been totally impressed both times. My first meal was Cajun Sea Bass with truffle waffle fries (from a freaking trailer!)....absolutely delicious and only $8! And tonight I had the Shrimp Pasta Salad With Veggies. I was expecting little baby shrimp in a pasta heavy dish (and so I was second guessing my choice) when suddenly this beautiful bowl of deliciousness was placed in front of me. I was amazed to see THREE huge shrimp placed over the most flavorful, aromatic warm penne pasta with chopped zucchini and mushrooms all for just SIX bucks! I was expecting to be WOW'ed but left feeling alright. I came here last night when it was docked on east 6th, and I think I might have just not tried the right dishes that makes this truck rave-worthy because I ended up leaving slightly 'meh'. The polenta cake was an interesting mix of flavors and textures--corn meal with a poached egg on top and kale pesto with goat cheese. I give them high points for creativity, but to me it wasn't too delicious.. and I wasn't exactly craving more when it was finished. The shiitake mushroom soup wasn't too bad, especially on a chilly night and a good size that isn't too skimpy, with a side of crispy bread. The peeps at the truck were totally friendly and super nice. I'd totally be willing to give it another try to see what all the fuss is about. read more

I came to the Tuesday Truck thing at the Long Center on 8/28. I ordered the Roasted duck Torta. Now I was actually expecting an actual torta. . what I got was a tostada type deal. It had refried beans with duck on top and red onions. I do not eat onions so those came right off and onto my fiancee's plate and the trash. it was ok. I know the price of duck is the cause for this tostada to be $7 but I wouldnt order this again. It sounded much better in the description than it actually tasted. read more

Given the recent glut of food trucks popping up around town, it's always refreshing to see one that has more to offer than some eye-catching signage and convenient, yet uninspired fare. Regardless of how you may feel about the offerings at the Seedling Truck, you would be hard pressed to argue that they're anything short of inspired. With a menu that strikes a rare balance between being eclectic and synergistic, it's clear that the minds behind The Seedling Truck (and Royal Fig Catering) are not content resting on their culinary laurels. Beyond the proven menu staples (such as the polenta cake and bacon cinnamon rolls), don't be surprised to see some specials that can really give the dining experience that extra bit of pizazz (like the bacon s'mores). One note for serious eaters, the portions are not very large, so don't expect to fill up on one order of the butternut squash & apple soup if you routinely scarf down whole pizzas and monster burritos in one sitting. The menu seems to be designed with experimentation in mind, so bring a friend, mix and match. The closest parallel I can draw to this kind of dining experience is the now-defunct Odd Duck. Overall, The Seedling Truck is a perfect eatery for people who love and can appreciate food. The synergies and flavor profiles are, at times, subtle, but I have yet to be disappointed in the slightest. read more

I used the Seedling Truck & Chef for our Summer wedding & they were fantastic! I was looking for something a little different - funky, eclectic, finger food with a flare. And I got it! Our wedding venue did not have a kitchen & I didn't want to create a formal atmosphere but strived for something unique and palatable. Food was fresh and we were given menu options 5 days before the wedding based on local produce. The element of surprise was fun & yet we still had options. The food truck itself provided its own element of intrigue & it was a hit with our guest. Well, I just found my review from some months ago never posted but nonetheless - I got the bacon sandwich and was pretty excited about it. It was horrible. I really wanted to like this because they have unique menu items and I like supporting local goodness. The bacon was so incredibly salty that I had to take a bite about the size of my pinky fingernail to try to deal with it. The bacon was super thick cut, of which I'm not a fan but if it was prepared some other way to cut down on the salt, perhaps I could have enjoyed it. To their credit, it was cooked well: there was a crisp factor but maybe a little too much fat for my liking. The ciabatta roll it was served on was good, the egg was nothing special, and the greens were sparse. The lady next to me agreed and we both mentioned that we really like salt so this sandwich was really ridiculous. Maybe I'll try something else another time. read more

I got a crab cake and yellow heirloom tomato salad from the seedling truck for lunch. For $8 I feel like I got a good deal. The tomato salad was my favorite part, it was fresh and seasoned great. The crab cake was tasty, but nothing amazing. It came already broken up instead of in a patty which was a little strange, also had a few bits of shell in it. The poached egg on top was cooked to perfection. I cut into it and the egg oozed over everything beautifully. Unfortunately, the egg and tomato juices soaked into the crab cake and made it a little soggy. The guys who run the truck seem pretty nice and came round and asked me if I enjoyed their meal which I appreciated. I would probably give them another try. read more

The Seedling Food Truck did the catering for my May wedding. Dan was great to work with and the food was delicious. Even though we didn't know the menu choice until a week before the event (it is farm to table, the menu is based on what is fresh and in season) there were many options to choose from. All of our guest were happy and raved about the food. They were very accommodating and were able to help order any rental items, set our buffet up in stations and even provided extra plates when we ran out. I was hoping for a good dinner and maybe just ordered the wrong thing. I had a sausage and ricotta flatbread that was too large of a portion for one person, although the girl warned me it was big. I can eat a lot but this was too boring to eat more than half. It was fine, but ricotta is mild, the sausage was nicely seasoned but not particularly special, and it needed more veggies, acid, or something for contrast and kick. Meh.
