I've lived in Lubbock for most of my life so I've basically tried every BBQ restaurant here. And in my opinion, this place has the best BBQ in Lubbock. All of the meats are extremely flavorful and tender, and the sides are also delicious. Sundays are the best days to come here because they have beef ribs on Sunday. The beef ribs are extremely meaty and rich and flavorful. They are super tender and a great treat to have once in a while. The pork ribs here are also delicious. They're tender and have a great smoky sweetness. For my sides, I like both styles of potato salads and the mac and cheese. The potato salads are cold and taste fresh which is nice when you're eating a lot of greasy BBQ. Mac and cheese is a staple BBQ side and every time I get BBQ, I get mac and cheese. Although the ribs are my favorite meats here, every meat here is delicious. The fatty brisket and the sausage here are really good and I enjoy them every once in a while. After eating the huge pile of meat, I tried my two sides beans, and coleslaw. The beans had chunks of brisket and just the right amount of spice. Having hitched my pony here before, The Shack was my first choice for my BBQ refresher course when I rolled into town. It was lunch time and the parking was scarce and the line extended well out the front door indicating this was definitely the place to be. From line to feast, about 30 minutes was lost which is nothing for a good BBQ joint. On the fifth day, the Lord said "let there be brisket" and it was good (pretty sure the Bible says that, but feel free to check me on it). I've only tried the brisket, but can confidently say that The Shack is doing it right. This is real deal brisket; rubbed and smoked just right. I went with my usual, the chopped sandwich. I like that you get a bit of everything mixed in the chop; the lean, moist and some bark. The result is an amazing sandwich with flavor for days. As you can see in my picture, they don't cheat you on the meat either. At $7 some odd dollars, this sandwich is a can't miss. I also picked up a pound of the sliced for the family. However, after I finished "sampling" it, I think there may have only been two or three slices left. The sliced brisket would hold its own most anywhere as well. You could easily slice it with your fork which is impressive. I tried the regular and spicy sauce and both were very solid; as in I wouldn't mind having a bottle of either. In my opinion though, the spicy was only a slight uptick from the regular. It wouldn't hurt my feeling if the spicy had a little more heat to it. I'm hoping it was an anomaly because my side of pinto beans were a complete disappointment. They were not fully cooked and seemed to be bathing in water with a few random pieces of bacon and onions. I had the beans a year ago and found those to be more of a bbq style (in a sauce) and they were delicious. This order was terrible and went in the trash after a couple of bites. Again hopefully an anomaly, but I'd be more inclined to go brisket only next time. In closing, The Shack BBQ is literally a roadside shack. That said, some of the best BBQ around comes from or started out in roadside shacks. This is definitely an authentic BBQ experience. I can't speak for any of the other offerings, but can say do not hesitate to come here for the brisket. read more

This was the best bbq I have ever had! The service was amazing and very helpful. The brisket was so moist and was full of flavor the bark on the brisket was very peppery. The jalapeño sausage was moist and the flavor was out standing . The turkey had amazing moister like all the other meats the bark on the turkey had a good flavor not the same as the brisket it had less seasoning but the meat it's self makes it better to have less flavor on the bark. Staff are extremely nice but when I arrived all that was left was chicken. The chicken was extremely dry and even with sauce I couldn't eat more than a few pieces. Do you believe in divine intervention? Well, we got there around 3:30pm, way before closing at 8pm, and they were out of everything but chicken and pulled pork. Hmmmm......not our favorites and definitely not items we normally order at a bbq joint. Since we were starving, we both got the 2 meat plates and both items with various sides: pinto beans, loaded potato salad, collard greens and coleslaw. They ran out of mac and cheese. It was love at first bite. Btw, it was the pulled pork that I tried first. It was smokey, it was juicy, it was flavorful and had pieces of bark in it. The chicken was tender and juicy and you get an entire breast. The sides, wow, all homemade taste and rich in flavor. My favorite was the loaded potato salad. C'mon, there's bacon in there. For $10.99 a plate, it was an excellent price for the amount of food you get. Don't forget the desserts. They ran out of banana pudding...ugh...but we got the apple cheesecake. It's....different....not quite what you think. Think apple pie with cheesecake spread in between the top cinnamon crust and bottom crust. I'll let you decide if it's a keeper. Honestly and very surprisingly The Shack BBQ serves up some of the best brisket I've ever had. In a unassuming large spacious building with gravel road parking, you'll find some of the tastiest brisket in the Texas area. Prices are super fair, sides are good, and service is really fast. I ordered the 1 meat plate which comes with 2 sides and a slice of bread. I choose the sliced fatty brisket, mac and cheese, loaded potato salad, and added and extra bun. The brisket was sooooo tender and fatty in a really good way, sides were good, bread was average. I thought the "bun" was going to be more of like a dinner roll, but it was literally a hamburger bun. Each table has containers filled with 4 their BBQ sauce which offers a nice range to accompany all of their meats. Made it to the shack for the first time since they closed. We ordered the 1 meat plate and the 2 meat plate. The 2 meat plate price has increased. We both ordered beans and mac and cheese as our sides. Mac and cheese was such a staple at the shack before and this time around it was lacking in flavor and the texture felt powdery. The beans were also not as good and lacked flavor. The brisket and sausage were about the same as the old shack which was a good thing. Overall, I was dissatisfied but I would return for the brisket. I placed an order to go from the road and when I got there 28 minutes before they closed, they had my order ready - a little over $100 with tip. I went to put the bag in my car and I went back to asked to use the restroom because I was on my way to Clovis New Mexico and they realized they had forgotten my dessert order which included two orders of apple pie/cobbler and 2 banana cheesecakes but they told me they had no bananas so I just took the cheesecake. When I got to Clovis at my son's house we unpacked the meal only to find out that my granddaughter's macaroni and cheese was not included, nor was there any barbecue sauce which I had requested and there was no bread with the order as stated in their menu I did not think I had to look through the bag to make sure everything was there. And in the case of the macaroni and cheese if they had been out of it, then I think I should've been told upfront. This is my second order from the shack, the first one was for myself, and it was really good. This one was not as good - the brisket - chopped and sliced was really very dry. The SLICED BRISKET - request the fatty brisket - is the best thing you could lay your tongue on. Succulent, peppery, smoky! Their sides are dead on as well. Love the custardy MAC AND CHEESE - they make theirs with pasta shells. The COLLARD GREENS are so smoky and tender. Everything was fresh, had a wonderful smokiness to it, and was nice portions. The Mac and cheese wasn't outstanding but I'm a Mac and cheese snob, generally preferring home made versions. The sauce offerings were slim but good offering regular, spicy, and a mustard based BBQ sauce. We finished our meal off with the banana pudding and the Apple pie cheesecake. The banana pudding was very rich and a little more dense than I'm used to but I enjoyed it still. The Apple pie cheesecake was great! You get the crust of an apple pie with small bits of apple pieces and a nice cheesecake base. If I lived here in Lubbock I would visit this place weekly. The prices are really reasonable.
