Looking for a place to grab a quick bite to eat while staying in Superior, we came across The Shack. I said no at first because it looked like a depressed bar but what set it to a yes instead was the glorious smell that wafted from the restaurant during the afternoon before we went while they were freshly smoking their meats. So when the decision came to find a place, we said why not? We came on a Friday, which was even better, because we were able to take advantage of their Friday fish fry. I looked on Yelp to see what we should order while here and the fish fry got a lot of mentions so we decided to try that and some of their BBQ. The fish fry was worth the mention. It was AYCE but I would be surprised if you could want more after the first plate with their generous portions sizes. The fries were in-house hand cut and covered with Parmesan cheese. The fish was crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside. It was a great Up North-style fish fry. The BBQ was very good as well. I tried the pulled pork sandwich and it came on a giant bun. Once again, the portion sizes were very generous. The sandwich came with a side of homemade BBQ sauce but honestly the meat had such a good flavor I didn't even need to add any to the sandwich. I have to give them a thumbs up for making many of their items like sauces and sides in-house even though it seemed like they could get away with less quality for being a small town bar & grill. This place really hit the spot, we were looking for no frills comfort food, and that is exactly what we found at The Shack. Price point vs. portion sizes were great and the service was small town friendly and prompt. Looks can be deceiving but The Shack isn't the dumpy bar I thought it was at first and I am glad we gave this place a shot. read more

The food was misleading but tasty....calling chuck roast "brisket" is Texas sacrilege! The flavor is good, but selling a lower end cut as brisket is misleading - cheese curds were very good, service was awesome, and the beer selection was perfect! they usually have their homemade Caesar dressing for their salad which is amazing . this time they were out of it . and in addition to that there was a small spider crawling around my salad . I usually love coming to the shack and have for years . idk if it's the ownership or the ethic overall but it's on a steady decline . I have to boycott this place now which sucks but there is zero consistency lately . I've been going here for several several years and it's been declining in quality for a long time now . The Shack was a new stop for us as we come to Superior a few times a year. Of the beaten path, as some would say, The Shack has plenty of room for big groups as well as couples to enjoy a decent meal. The bar setting looked nice as well. The service as timely and accommodation. There were decent selections on the menu and all items were fairly well priced. The smoked wings were very tasty. The nachos were aplenty and flavorful. The Firecracker Wrap was very tasty. And the fries were excellent, especially with the add-on option of Parmesan cheese. Plenty of parking. A nice place to visit if you are in the area. read more

Really liked this place. Hayley made that easy for us. Great service! We spent a good portion if a weekend here. Had the pizza, very tasty,( their crust has a bit of cornmeal to it) loved the smoked meat toppings! I enjoyed the smoked pastrami, the wife liked the smoked , pulled pork. Cheese curds were mediocre. Really enjoyed the huge Bloody Marys with everything piled on it and our choice of vodka. Missed out on the smoked brisket. Enjoyed the various sports on tvs they had here. Enjoyed the attached liquor store which had plenty of craft beer choices. Again , enjoyed how Hayley took care of us. A unique neighborhood bar. The service was amazing. They had a call off but the college kid behind the bar was super friendly, prompt and apologetic. He was really on top of it and that made us enjoy the experience. Food was decent but not the best. Should have tried the brisket that was made in house I think that would have been better. The drinks were well made and refreshing. Place could have been a little cleaner. It wasn't very busy for a Saturday night. read more

Service was alright, didn't have the table clean, but offered to wipe it down. It wasn't busy, so I was surprised it wasn't done. We had the ribs, Mac and cheese and pulled pork sandwich. Smaller selection of brews but good, and I appreciate the couple of local selections. Got the curds and a Cuban Sammy to split. They said the curds are from a new supplier and they were pretty tasty. The parm fries were good (house made) and the sammy was very tasty. The pork didn't really taste smoked but it was good nonetheless. The only drawback to this place is that everything seems a bit...sticky. Overall, good and we'll be back. read more

I love 1the food is tasty, hot when it comes out to the table & really good. Mostly loved eating on the deck so for supper over the last several year have been indoor dinners w/ friends n relatives who are up visiting us. My family stopped and had dinner there and the food was terrible and the waitress was so rude! The burger was completely raw and cold in the center. The buffalo wrap tasted rancid and like something in it had gone bad. The prime rib sandwich was half gristle and blah. When the waitress came back to ask how things were I tried to explain about the burger and the wrap but as I was talking she turned and walked away pissed off saying that she had never had anyone complain about there food before. they "recooked" the burger but even after they put it back on the grill it still came back raw in the center. We sent back the wrap because it was inedible. When we got the bill she still charged us full price for everything even though we had sent one plate back and had issues with the others. She said that we didn't like it because it was to spicy. (We eat habanero sauce. So that's not true) She told me that she was done with this conversation and to go tell someone else who cares. So that's what I'm doing and Needless to say we will not be back! read more

I called in an order for pick up on 1/21 around 5:15. They said it'd be ready in fifteen minutes....I arrived and it was ready. The Shack was not very busy, and the greeting wasn't very "Welcoming". I got the smoked wings and house salad. Not much smoke flavor to the wings and they didn't look very appealing. The lettuce was crisp but the cucumber and tomato were rubbery and shriveled. Fairly priced, but don't think I'd stop there the next time I'm traveling in the area for work. read more

Fantastic burgers; grass-fed and local beef no less! We stopped here for lunch on the way to see the nice caves and we were impressed. It wasn't too busy, It being Sunday, and the service was fast. Our server was pleasant and nice to our slightly rowdy kids (they had been cooped up in a car for 3 hours by then). The fries: please don't ever change them. They were clearly cut from potatoes, lightly seasoned and fried to perfection. They had that perfect potato taste with a nice crunch on the outside. I also discovered the additional seasoning shakers at the table and tried them: quite tasty. My bacon cheeseburger was delicious. We had a party of three on a Saturday afternoon. There was a medium sized party (wedding with mayn't 12 people) and a couple others sitting at the bar. The food was good -- I had the pastrami sandwich which was flavorful and hot. Fries were really the star and delicious. Our service was absolutely terrible though. The waitress would disappear into the kitchen for very long stretches is time. After we were seated it took several minutes (almost 15) for her to come back to ask us our drink order. I love the Prime Rib Sandwich and their burgers are out of this world! Sierra is an awesome bartender and Brittany has always been great as a server. it's sad when a place doesn't keep itself "up", it's the little things, like shredding the overdone, unflavored, (supposedly smoked?) brisket before putting it on the bun; my first bite the chunks of meat fell out the bun and I had to chew like leather, the bun full of grease it falls apart, wasn't I supposed to get bbq sauce? and the onions cut so darn thick. ugh! that was just my order and my sandwich. I've been here a number of times with my grandparents. That should tell you something about the atmosphere of the restaurant. (I believe the Kiwanis club holds their meetings here.) Extensive menu, and most things I've ordered have actually been not bad. I LURVE that most things come with a side salad and baked potato. You add that to anything, and it improves the meal 300%. It's my favorite thing about eating out in the midwest. Food tends to be really heavy and rich, which can be really satisfying or really gross, depending on what mood you're in. But really, their menu stretches for miles, and you can probably find something you want in any mood. Good service all around, but the elderly German waitress is my favorite!! read more

I absolutely love this restaurant!! I would eat here daily if I could. The Shack Ceaser Salad (with their house made dressing) is AMAZING! The chips... AMAZING! Bread sticks... FANTASTIC! Oh, the Wisconsin Beer Cheese Soup... ooooh so good. WITH POPCORN! As it should be. I have eaten many different things here, and I don't think I've ever been disappointed. So good. Oh, and their vegetables- very very fresh! The service is also very good! Diane, who is always there during lunch, is fantastic. I would recommend anyone and everyone go here. Great food and great drinks - since The Shack has come under new management (and new kitchen help) the quality of the food and the overall experience has improved noticeably over past years. I ordered an off-menu item that a friend told me about called "The Man Burger" which was around 1 pound of beef and 1.25 pounds of toppings and bun. I was amazed that 3 of the 4 of us who tried it finished the burger (but not the sides) and everyone else enjoyed their food as well. I've eaten here a few times in the past half year or so and there was only one meal I wouldn't order again, but that is because it was the option I disliked least on the menu offered by an organization that put on an awards even there. I had sauteed walleye that was fresh, flavorful, and not fishy. It came with a baked potato that could have been warmer and some tasty vegetables that tasted grilled then sauteed. Friend had the pasta special that was an alfredoish sauce with chicken and he liked it. And another friend had a wild rice burger that he liked. The place is fancy for Superior with comfortable booths with lots of room. Our server was very attentive with a pleasant attitude (Alexandra). My only complain are the prices. read more

Had dinner with my kids during a brief stay in Duluth-Superior. Nice atmosphere, lots of menu options and pretty good food with large portions. We especially liked Trudy our server, an older lady with a German accent. Really nice, attentive and had an interesting trick of putting salt on drink napkins to keep them from sticking. I've gotten stuck in this frozen hell hole a few times. That being said, I've stayed in the hotel next door and eaten here over and over again. If you've seen bad reviews trust me, every once and a while idiots eat here. I've encountered every server here and they are all good people. Absolutely the worst service I have ever had. We made reservations but the greeter was looking at the wrong date so they assumed they had no reservations and we had to wait 30 minutes for a table for 7. No manager ever came to talk to us. It took 30 minutes to get a drink. We had to ask for silverware after we received our meals. Vegetables were cold. They forgot one of the meals so it came 40 minutes after the rest of us. The bathrooms were horrible. The soap dispenser is broken and it looks like someone threw up in one of the stalls. We asked for water on three different occasions. The server had no idea how to explain the specials. We had to ask for our tabs and to go boxes. Very disappointed. read more

Had the chicken fettuccine special. It was very cheesy and had a bit of smoky flavor. I liked it a lot. Friend had a very tasty piece of walleye lightly battered and pan seared. I really like The Shack's bar area. A nice, cool place to hang out with freinds and eat some real good food. The restaurant part of the establishment isn't my favorite though. Mostly consists of elderly people and or families. The atmosphere isn't the greatest either. But the bar is great and the liquor store connected to it comes in real handy.
