We will always recommend The Shoe Box for my husband. He is very tall, and has a very large foot. He can't find his size shoe anywhere else. Although, we visit every 2-3 years, we went there to find better shoes, recommended by his podiatrist, specifically mesh gym shoes. My husband had an awesome young salesman, who gave him a ton of suggestions. He knew how it felt to have foot issues. While they didn't have the same foot issues, this salesman certainly exceeded expectations, and went way out of his way to help him out. Whoa! It was a jackpot shoe shopping day. Went to the Bargain side first. Found the perfect pair of snow boots -- soft, black, zippered, even light Doc Martens. Considerably reduced of course. Perfect fit, too. Then on to the regular shoe store. Had resigned myself to purchasing two pairs of full priced Haflingers. (They are the only sturdy, comfortable shoes that fit at the moment due to a medical situation.) BUT -- two different kinds of Haflingers were also being phased out. Yes! Add those, too. Then found a pair of reduced, winter type (lined) clogs with a back strap. They were even Uggs! Ok! Also added four cans of suede / nubuck water protectant spray. (Cashier was so impressed with the final tally, they gave me two of the cans without charging. Well! Thank you.) As the cashier on the discount side said, she worked at the store and appreciated it so much because the store was "old-fashioned". I knew what she meant. And agreed. The best shoe store of all time. It's like having the same service I had years ago, where one person took care of you. I go back at least once a year. They have practically every kind of shoe you can imagine. I love my Merrills, and it wasn't until I had a chance to read reviews on them that I realized I needed to go a half size up. We've driven by this place dozens of times over the years but never stopped until yesterday. We knew it had a good reputation for a big selection and that sure was true. The place is huge inside and swarming with sales people. When I finally found what I was looking for I was promptly helped though he was confused on what shoe was really on the display. I had to straighten him out. The prices seemed decent (I checked later and the Nike court shoes I bought were about $5 cheaper than on Amazon). Supposedly a big sale was coming up soon but... Had a family outing at the Shoe Box on Sunday. All 20 of us showed up to watch the grandkids pick out shoes for the new school year. There's 10 of them all about the same age so really intriguing to watch them interact and lobby each other while checking out the latest styles. The Shoe Box staff are fantastic and there's plenty of them on duty to help. It took about 30 minutes to satisfy everyone's needs, get fitted and out the door. Check out is always crazy when you are buying 10+ pair of shoes but the staff were great. Jill, Steve's daughter, was part of the check out process. It was good to see her heavily involved in the business. We left with a smile on our faces and a hop in our step. I have been coming to The Shoe Box since I was a child. Each time I shop here the service has always been incredible. The variety of shoes, boots, and all footwear here is fantastic and I've never seen any store have the variety this one does. On my most recent visit, I was shopping for a particular pair of work boots that was not in stock anywhere, besides The Shoe Box. Within 2 minutes of entering the store, I was able to find the boots and have a worker help me try them on. And within 10 minutes I was walking out of the store with a new pair of boots. I hate shoes. Hate might be too strong, or perhaps an incorrect adjective. After all, I prefer shoes to being barefoot. Shoes are a necessity. As are clothes, which are equally just optional. Though the legal system might argue that. Strange, when you consider the skeevy and lurid private sec clubs are perhaps mostly made up of members of the bar. Hmmm. Too many shoes. It took me 40 minutes to decide on two pairs of shoes. All I wanted was a reasonably priced pair of white leather New Balance and a similar style, but perhaps lighter, Nikes. $50 it seems should be a price I could get one pair. The ugliest of the vast selection, shoes NO ONE (aside from the colorblind) in my younger, cooler days of relevance would consider actually wearing, much less purchasing. Unless they were essentially bullies (we all know or have done something like this, including the word that's correctly frowned upon) and might (but in those days such ridiculous footwear was reserved for clowns) use them as a gag. My son has a pair closely resembling what I am imagining. He is a shoe freak. Probably a dozen pairs, some proportionately as costly as a car or two I might've owned when I was just a few years older than him. So whatever. I got my shoes. They're ok. The New Balance I ended up with were grey and nylon. Still over $50 I think I recall. The ones I wanted were like $80 but out of stock. The Nikes, I like them. Except one squeaked really badly. At first I thought it was a wet floor thing. So today I finally resolved to exchange them. I was informed that this wasn't an unusual occurrence. Sounds to me like a recall is in order. read more

It's always busy - getting help can be a challenge. Not really a personal touch sort of experience. Lots of standing around. But big selection, particularly if it's a brand they are featuring. I really want to like the Shoe Box. The first time I went there, maybe 3-4 years ago, I found a really cute pair of sandals. But my visits since then have not been successful. This week I went to Shoe Box and I was helped by two employees, and one employee was quite rude and unprofessional. I first noticed the rude employee because she was talking very loudly to customers that she appeared to personally know. The employee was saying that covid was all started by China, and how she blamed 6 people from WI who were visiting China at the time... I thought that was an inappropriate thing to loudly exclaim at work, but didn't think much about it. Later this employee helped get a couple shoes for me to try on. I put on a pair and walked to a nearby mirror. The employee literally yelled at me from across the store, "hey what are you doing?! There's a mirror near the bench I put you at!" All the customers in between me and the employee turned around to see what she was yelling about. I said, "I like to walk around a bit to see how the shoes feel. But thanks for letting me know about the other mirror." She just said "Oh... Okay." It was really weird that she felt the need to control what mirror I used, let alone yell across the room! Later when I asked the same employee for another pair of shoes to try on, she said "those don't have any arch support. I'd recommend these other ones instead." I told her another employee already looked into the other shoes she recommended for me and they didn't have my size. The employee said okay and walked away to see if someone else needed help. I had to go after her to ask her again about bringing me the shoes that I asked to try on, she said "Oh you still want those?" I said yes. When she brought me the pair of shoes in my size, she was clearly frazzled and said that she was wrong and the shoes DID have good arch support. She said she confused them with a diff pair that used to be in that same spot on the shelf. As I was trying on the shoes, the employee got another pair of shoes from the back for another customer. The employee walked around looking for the other customer, loudly saying "Ughhh! Where are they?? Where did they go?! I have your shoes! Ughhh, I just want to go home!!" At that point the customer stuck her head around the corner and said, "Here I am..." It was so awkward! No one likes being at work but it's extremely rude when you work in customer service to tell customers you're "helping" that you just want to go home. Especially when the customers have to rely on employees to get shoes in their size. I don't plan to go back anytime soon. Not only was this particular employee awful, but they once again didn't have any shoes (in my size) that I liked enough to buy. read more

As a soccer dad, I also appreciate that I can always find all the gear my daughter needs when the season kicks off. The employees of the store live and breathe "Service like it oughta be" philosophy. They are friendly, energetic, attentive and knowledge. They also measure your foot and ask informed questions on what you are looking for. They display incredible patience, even when dealing with the most indecisive of customer (insert my daughter's name here). As Steve L mentioned in his review, the place gets slammed on weekends. However, I never wait more than a couple of minutes to be served - they always seem to have enough staff on hand to deal with the thongs of customers that come walking though their doors. The prices are generally better than what you can find locally and are on par with the on-line shoe retailers. Pro tip: Many area employers have a discount program with the Shoe Box that gives you and additional 10% the already low prices. If your employer does not have a discount program, see if they will set one up. And if that approach does not work, scan the local paper for 10% off coupons. If great selection, service and prices are not enough to draw you in, the walls are literally covered with cool sports and historical memorabilia that keeps me occupied when my daughter is trying on her 10th pair of sneakers. Other great attributes: Free wi-fi, kid movies playing on TVs in the children's section of the store and weekend brat fries. The only down sides I can come up with is that finding parking can be difficult on weekends and the selection of dress shoes is average. But that does not tarnish the fact that The Shoe Box offers a five-star experience to those willing to make the drive to Black Earth. read more

I went in to buy a pair of shoes. I had already decided which shoe I wanted. All there was to do was get the correct size. I waited by the display for a salesperson to assist me. There were ample salespeople who were working at a brisk pace, but no one approached me. I waited and waited. I made eye contact with several employees who were waiting to serve customers, yet no one offered help. I stood by for 20 minutes, until I felt as if I was not welcome. In the end I left. This place is... gigantic. TONS of selection. If they don't have it, you don't need it. If you're planning on stopping by The Shoe Box, make sure you have time. You'll need it to browse the massive selection they have as well as the bargain room in back. We *always* shop here for shoes. While you can find some better deals elsewhere (a clearance sale, bogo, whatnot), you still want to check in here to make sure you're not missing something better. The staff are always super-friendly and smart. We know when we come here we'll be treated well and given honest feedback (if the shoes have good support, if they'll last, etc.). Also, make sure you have enough time to simply "look around". There's a bunch of memorabilia hanging around you won't want to miss. Plus, you can "chat" with the birds around the store. The kids hate coming here - until we're inside and they get to see all the sights. Then we can't ge them to leave... The store can get VERY busy. Weekends can be a zoo. If you can stop by at an odd hour (mid-week, mid-day), you won't have to battle the masses. read more

The staff all "wear" masks, although they pull them down to their chins quite often. 3. There is no way to stay far enough away from people. 4. They claim to limit patrons to 50% capacity, but that is a joke. The store is packed. No one is counting as people come in 5. I needed to buy 3 pairs of shoes and decided that instead of buying online, I would support a local store (25 min from my home). I had 3 pairs of different shoes in my hand, made eye contact with 2 different staff persons as they were walking around looking to help someone, who looked at my face and then looked away, and went to ask someone else if they needed help. They did look pretty busy. So, I thought I would go to the cash wrap and see if there was a better way to get help so that I can let those who didn't feel like helping me continue doing what they wanted to do. The cash wrap person told me I just need to stop someone. So, I used a colloquial phrase, "great, I'll just grab someone then." She said to me "no, don't literally grab them." Wow.
