Decent selection, easy access... The owner? I think there's something very wrong with him. Posted on the outside of the building are signs stating SALE so maybe we might get lucky and find something. My wife found a pair of shoes and the sales guy, very friendly and helpful, stated they were on sale. So far so good. I also found a pair and asked if they were on sale. The sales guy then looked nervous and almost defeated and stated he would ask the owner. From across the room, we could hear the owner yelling at his employee in front of everyone asking him why I asked if it was on sale. We, and surrounding customers, were baffled. It went from causal to turd storm in 3 seconds. The sales guy returned and said the owner will talk to us up front. At this point in time, I was gearing up to have a heated verbal. I apologized to the sales guy as he was visibly shook up. Who would have thought a simple question was cause such a scene. We got up to the front for which I was ready. The owner was nice as pie, as if a switch had been flipped and nothing ever happened, and gave me a sales price on my shoes. Not sure why I bought them. I was so agitated by that whole scene I must have been on auto pilot. Note to the owner: Respect and treat your people well and they'll do the same in return. If you have a beef with an employee, take it elsewhere and out of view of customers and handle it with some form of tact. I love the expanse shoe selection here-if you want it they've got it. However, since there are so many different shoes on display the sizes are kept elsewhere. You can feel free to browse through, but in order to try on shoes you need to wait for an associate to finish with another customer until you get to monopolize their time getting them to disappear into what I'm assuming is a giant shoe warehouse with boxes galore. So if you know what you're looking for and you know your size it might not take long. If you are like me and happened to bring your five year old with a love of all things pretty, but dislike of all things uncomfortable good luck. We were also sized professionally which helps tremendously. The prices at the Shoebox are competitive and like I said there is a vast selection. You can choose from steel toe work shoes to cowboy boots to hiking sandals to athletic styles and fashion tennis shoes. Really, they've most likely got it. And good quality name brands in a well laid out store. But if you or someone you know has sensory issues this is not the store for you. It is very crowded, colorful, since there are so many shoes it is overwhelming as well. There's a lovely parrot that loves to talk but will bite for added entertainment. My suggestion is to try across the street at their outlet first. The shoes that are on clearance are all out and grouped by style. You don't need to wait for assistance, but you can ask one of the associates. The high quality shoes that may be discontinued are on sale and a few things are a steal. I highly recommend this shoe store for their assortment and quality, but again you will need a bit more patience here and it will take a bit longer than typical shoe stores. read more

Returned worn boots and credit was issued. My husband buys his boots here on a yearly basis. The last boots did not "break in" like most boots do. Two months after wearing them, he brought them back to the Shoe Box. He found another pair he liked and we proceeded to check out. Steve stepped up and gave us full credit ($118) and we purchased a new pair. We will be back again! My wife and I stopped in on Thursday, to get my western boots stretched. There was nowhere obvious to go for help with stretching boots -- no service desk, just a checkout counter. We walked around for a few minutes but it was super busy and everyone we saw was helping customers. Finally, we stood in line at the checkout counter, as our only way to talk to someone and ask for help. A nice, older woman helped us out when it was our turn at the counter. She told us that she'd grab someone to help with resizing. We followed her around the store, while she tried to get different guys to help out. The first man she asked just said exasperatedly that he was "helping 5 people already" and told her to find someone else. She did but he was also busy and didn't want to deal with us. He told her that he would help, so she could go back to the counter, but then he kept trying to pass us off to someone else. Ultimately, we were passed around to 3 or 4 different men before someone took my boots. Even then, he didn't ask me any questions about how I needed my boots stretched: which boot was the tightest, how much stretching they needed, etc. Instead, he just grabbed the boots from me, ran into the back of the store, and then came back saying that they'd be done in 5 minutes. We were left waiting without any obvious way to talk to anyone again. Someone did bring my boots back out about 5 minutes later. As expected, they weren't noticeably different in any way, and no one waited to see if they needed more work. We were just left alone, apparently to fend for ourselves and to interrupt someone else if we needed more help. I opted to skip it. It was obvious that no one wanted to help. I would have been satisfied had someone told us that he was busy but could help us in about 10 minutes. I would have happily waited for my turn, as long as someone was actually willing to help me and to take the time to see what I needed. Instead, I just got rudeness and exasperation. Very sorry to report this as we have been loyal customers of this place for years. On a Sunday, they were slammed, I get it, but the sales people really didn't need to be so rude about it. There's no system, you have to hope that you can catch someone just as they're finishing with a customer. Salespeople were flying around but there was no acknowledgment, like "sorry, we will be with you as soon as we can." When you ask, "when you're done with your customer, is it possible you can assist me", the answer is a snarl, (like, can't you see that we're busy.) My husband got a pair of shoes from the men's side. When we went to pay for the shoes, I mentioned to the cashier, was hoping to try on some shoes for me, she essentially said, "never come on weekends." Left for lunch and came back. They were less busy, but the sales people on the women's side were still nasty. Customers still waiting around to catch someone's eye. Very disappointed. Owners take note, don't know if it is low morale or what, but your customers are being dissed. read more

Large sign at front door stating you must wear a mask and if you don't have one they will provide one. A huge selection of shoes of all kinds - sneakers (casual and sport-specific), boots (winter, fashion, work), sandals (even in the winter), dress, slippers - pretty much anything you can put on your feet, you'll likely find here. On one side of the street is their Bargain Box - a whole building full of sale items. Every box is clearly marked on the outward facing side with the size, width, list price, and markdown price. It is exceedingly well organized considering the sheer volume of items and the state the average department store shoe section is in. The larger of their two parking lots is here, and there is a cross walk between the bargain side and the main shop. The regular Shoe Box was teeming with people when we visited on a Saturday afternoon, but gratefully they have the staff to accommodate the crowd. It did take me awhile for me to find someone to help me, but as soon as I did they were quick at trying to find what I needed. They were completely out of my size (and the surrounding sizes that may have fit, which the sales associate was awesome enough to have checked for before coming back out), which was a bummer, but at least I now know where I can find some comfortable-looking dress shoes. While I didn't have a chance to try on shoes myself, I observed several people getting old-school service. The associates don't just grab you shoes and walk away, they fit you, put the shoes on for you, lace them up, and wait for you to walk around to see if they are to your liking. If you need a minute to think, they make a round to check on others in the area and then come back to see if they can get you anything else. If you do choose to purchase, they bring your box up to the front so you don't have to juggle it while you continue to browse. The prices tend toward the higher side, but it's because they carry quality brands and provide real service. Definitely worth the easy drive out to Black Earth if you're looking for something specific, an uncommon size, or a specialty shoe. read more

My husband has a pair of big, sexy feet. It's tough to find size 13, much less 14 or 15 in most stores. It took quite a bit of convincing to suggest purchasing some expensive taste. "Trust me. You're worth it! Boom. Locking down contracts. " The bargain room is the place to be. The rest of the showroom is quite pricey. The ladies section isn't anything special, I can name 2 stores with similar selection and better prices. The bargain ladies section is no good. Pricey for outdated styles. You'll need to scour for attractive men's shoes but there are some sweet dress shoes. Mmmm yeah tuxedos for your feet. I heard many people being offered help from associates. During the 45 minutes of store time, visiting each section, we were not approached once. The cashier was nice but an employee offered help to the woman right next to me, she didnt need assistance, and then the employee glanced at me then proceeded to walk away. I think it's important to note that my husband was the only non white customer in the store. read more

I waited for a very long time to get someone to serve me. I was trying to get a man's shoe, although I am a woman (they are for work). Employees just kept passing me by even though I was smiling, and trying to make eye contact. I watched a male employee work with a customer until he was clearly finished. I asked if he could help me get this shoe in my size, and he told me he would get someone. Eventually a woman came and helped me. I bought my boots. Guess what? Turns out I can not be assisted at the Shoe-Box by a man! Only female employees are allowed to assist female customers. As a customer I find this very annoying, and I will not only talk to female employees for assistance. How does this even happen? Is this even legal? read more

This place is a trip (doh!). If you are going through Black Earth, especially on a Weekday, give yourself 45 minutes or more to get some shoes. You won't be disappointed. Awful. If this is what they call a bargain venue, then DSW must be bottom of the barrel prices. Every shoe I found was priced at the same point as Kohl's, DSW or a department store. I was looking for a pair of Sperry's and was doing price comparing on my smart phone. I am a constant purchaser of running shoes and boat shoes. I found no deals here. I ventured in the "Bargain Room" and most of the shoes were decently priced. Nothing really stood out. The bargains were not that good of a bargain. I am sure there are times you can get great deals. However, today was not the day. This place is for people who have hard sizes to find. You can find specialized work shoes here. Otherwise, save your gas. The drive is just not worth it. read more

I came in with the unusual need for shoes for drumming, which require just the right relationship between grip and slide. I came in knowing what a lot of other drummers use, but I was not happy with them. The person who helped me came up with an option I was not even aware of that was far better. Every year I visit Madison, Wisconsin and I only buy my shoes from this store. (I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, California) My friend and I make it a yearly event to drive from her house in Madison to Good Earth. The selection of shoes here is unbelievable. There are a handful of day trips to take when you go to Madison, WI and this is one of them. The drive to Black Earth, WI is lovely and the experience at the Shoe Box is both rewarding and fun! When I lived in Madison, WI we used to ship here regularily for boots, kids shoes, my own work shoes, etc. Now I have moved to Arizona and I drug the new hubby and my son out to Black Earth for the day and it was a fabulous experience. We all got new shoes, and met the birds, and enjoyed the photos of the memorabilia on the walls. We then drove to Mt. Horeb for lunch and back to Madison, WI for an ice cream cone on the Terrace. I feel compelled to write a review after my experience with the owner this morning. You hear a lot of mixed reviews for this place, specifically for it's prices. I needed a new pair of running shoes and I typically stick to one brand. After shopping at a few different stores and not finding what I wanted, I came to the Shoe Box...which also happens to be in my backyard. I walked in, was greeted immediately by a few different employees, and asked if I needed any help. I told the young man that I was looking for Adidas running shoes and he should just point me in the general direction. He proceeded to walk me all the way back to where they were and offered more help. I was surprised to see that they had a HUGE variety of Adidas shoes, unlike the few stores I had stopped before. He offered to size me as well. SUPERB customer service here at the Shoe box, which I know they pride themselves on. I found the prices to be extremely competitive as well. The traffic around the store can be overwhelming, especially during the weekends. Living close by, I've learned to be extra cautious when driving through there. Yesterday afternoon we had an unfortunate incident with one of the staff members right outside their parking lot. When I called to make them aware of it, the owner took the time to listen to what I had to say. He was so professional and understanding and immediately offered up his apologies. Being a part of the lovely community of Black Earth, I just wanted him to remind his employees to be careful when leaving the parking lot, and he assured me that he would. THANK YOU! I always see Shoe Box employees literally running between the Bargain Box and the Shoe Box with loads of shoes. This also speaks to the customer service they provide here. They're always serving up brats on the weekends too, which I'm sure comes in handy for those working up an appetite shoe shopping. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about the Shoe Box. The quantity of shoes in all shapes and sizes is unbelievable. Their prices are very reasonable. Bigfoot would be happy here. They have his size. Every size up to what looks like 26. They have every type of shoe or boot you might need here. Flip flops, crocs, water shoes, hiking boots, running shoes, construction boots, cowboy boots, hunting boots, ballet slippers, shoes for kids, shoes for grannies, shoes for everyone! If you're lucky and come on the weekend there's usually a troop of old ladies selling brats, hot dogs, homemade brownies and cookies. YUM. Inside the staff is on a mission, literally running to keep up with the footsie demand. They strive to make you happy and it shows. The repair shop on the other side of the street is great if you can wait 3-4 weeks to get your boots or shoes back. Did I mention the train running along the ceiling, live birds in cages, sports regalia up the wazoo. The staff will set you up, take your boxes up to the counter and then you can even pick up your T shirt with Shoe Box in any color, sports gum, and any other shoe accessory while you wait in line to pay. HOLY CRAP- the shoe box has a LOT of shoes! The prices are fair, not great, but very fair. The selection is something else- tons of shoes everywhere- folks come from miles around to shop here. Stopping bye on a summer Saturday afternoon when the local cubscouts are running their brat stand by the front door. We used to love the Shoe Box, but service has definitely went down hill. When we got shoes for my son for back to school there were several men working in the shoe department that didn't offer to help. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, but tonight was the last straw. I stopped by after work at 5 to find a simple slip on shoe. I walked around with a shoe in my hand for several minutes and workers did their best to avoid offering help. Finally, I asked a woman with blond hair in the women's section, if I could try these shoes. She honestly said to me, "You could have asked any of the other girls standing around to help you." Will never be shopping here again. I'm not going to share why I needed the shoes, but just a reminder to be kind. You never know what someone is going through. read more

The only place to buy kids shoes. They always measure and their sales people are extremely knowledgeable and not satisfied until you are. We have not gotten shoes here yet that haven't lived up to our expectations on fit or function. Customer service is excellent. Prices are pretty good, in line with what you would expect to pay online. Additionally, they have excellent bargains, and lots of stuff to keep kids entertained while you shop. WOW.... I rate the customer service at 120% I went on a Sunday and there were about a dozen employees working. Was busy and hard to find parking. Vast selection and prices seemed good. I must have tried on 8 different pairs, finally settling on 2 pairs. Little did I know the guy assisting me was running back and forth across the street to their warehouse to get my correct size! Not one time did he come off as to say, "seriously already!" They had my size (men's 12) in EVERY pair I had asked to try on, and sometimes and option for width! Oh, and get this, they just don't hand you the box and say here you go try them on. They take them out of the box and lace them up and pull out whatever is stuffed inside. It doesn't stop there, they place the shoe on the floor and pull out a shoe horn and have you place your foot into the shoe! This may not seem like a big deal to some, but I was was extremely impressed. read more
