I recently brought my Santoni leather shoes, which I've only worn for just over a year, to The Shoeshine Guild at One Embarcadero for repair, and I couldn't be happier with the results. While traveling in Seattle, I noticed a stain on the tip of my shoe and popped into a local shoeshine shop, thinking a regular shine would do the trick. The person who looked at them immediately recognized it as a hand sanitizer stain, which had penetrated the leather and removed the dye. He explained that a simple shine wouldn't fix it, the shoes needed to be stripped and redyed. Have been coming to this place for a year or two and have never been let down. The bulletproof is my jam and for only $15, you'll be happy that you took a moment to invest in maintaining your expensive dress shoes. I even go in to get my leather casual shoes done with their $10 basic shine. Happy and helpful staff all day. In the area for a wedding last weekend and my dress boots were in need of some major TLC. Found A Shine & Co through Yelp, and only a block away from our hotel. We dropped them off on our way to meet some friends at the Ferry Building. The gentleman who greeted us could tell right away that my shoes had been more than a bit neglected, and recommended the bulletproof shine for $27. The poor things did look pretty sad, so I agreed; we were then told we'd get a call when they were finished. A couple hours later, I received the call as promised that they were ready for pickup. When I arrived, the boots were loosely wrapped up in special tissue paper and placed in a retail paper bag so they could breathe. I left them like that back at the hotel until the wedding the next night. When I finally took them out of the bag and wrapping, I couldn't believe how nice they looked -- not brand new but about as close as I could hope for! Overall, a very happy experience for me while on travel. I can't recommend A Shine & Co enough if you're near the Embarcadero! read more

Came in to shine a pair since they're close by my office. Lee ( I think that was his name) shined my shoes and had a nice, calm demeanor. Shoes look great from the front, but he didn't get the backside. Awkwardest part of my experience was when another worker (white bald man with glasses), barged in extremely flustered. He hopped on the computer by the register and was loudly sighing and swearing the entire time. It was amusing to me, but really unprofessional. Overall, I'm not sure I'd come back. Maybe I'll try the shoe shiners that post up by the BART entrance. read more

Stumbled upon this little shop while taking a break during a long afternoon. After meeting their extremely friendly owner, I decided to drop off some black oxfords that needed some desperate work to the soles. She was extremely honest and upfront about the work that was going to go into the shoe, and I deeply appreciated that. Received a call a few days later and came back to see that they had brought my shoes back to life. Didn't hurt that they added a nice complimentary shine on there as well. Best shine I've had in town. Reasonable prices. They have 3 levels: Basic $7.00 Premium: $10.00 and a deluxe for $12.00. I liked that they had multiple people doing shines, as they can get fairly busy. Good magazine selection. Professional attitude and demeanor. They REALLY know what they're doing, and my deluxe shine involved multiple levels of polishing, brushing and shining. I went back the very next day, and he took the time and effort in matching the proper color polish to my brown shoes. Bulletproof! That's the shine I got on my shoes and I have to say it's not a lie. It's their best shine and it's $15 well spent. They were super friendly and spent about 15 minutes on them. She knew that my shoes were Allen Edmonds on sight and told me about how the company will repair and redye the shoes for the life of them. She was also very personable and pleasant the whole time. I went to the Galleria for the farmers' market and got a shoe shine as well. I figured their was a line because they were good and a lot of the places in the city do a quick and crappy job. The turn around is fast. They know what they're doing. They're similarly affordable. They call me if they think that I forgot my shoes... I had to get a pair of Gucci tuxedo shoes "shined" for a wedding--in two days. They took great care of them and made them look new! They delivered the shoes, individually wrapped in tissue and in a nice paper bag with handles. (Presentation was unexpectedly nice.) I'm tempted to bring a really worn down pair of Gucci moccasins to see what they can do; since these shoes have a proprietary sole, if that can be restored, I may never have to buy another pair of shoes again! read more

This place is awesome. I have been twice now and they have fixed all my boot problems. 1. They fixed a squeak in 2 pairs of my boots that other shoe places said wasn't fixable. 2. When i brought my second pair in, there was a miscommunication. I only wanted the squeak in the right heel fixed. When I came back it seemed they fixed the squeak, replaced both heels and shined them...it came to twice what I was going to pay. When I brought it up to them, they only charged me for the squeak. I have been in retail for a long time and that is good business right there. Although it may be more expensive than some other places, I will continue going here for the good work and good customer care. read more

I love walking through the Crocker Galleria to see both men and women sitting in the shoe shine chairs reading their New York Times, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle and other papers and magazines or better yet, chatting with the other customers and the friendly staff members of A Shine & Co. while getting their shoes shined. I have been using their services for more than a year love the experience - whether I read a newspaper while having my shoes shined or whether I drop off multiple pairs of shoes for both my wife and me. Unfortunately, the service I received today from one of the workers was awful. I left there fuming because of ONE OF the blond women (I'd never seen her there before). She just threw my bag down (containing ALREADY cleaned shoes) amongst the other patrons' shoes - this was after I told her that I would just come back since I was already running late for work. I would have overlooked their mediocre work and perhaps I would have given them another shot in the future but after this - never again. Couple things to note first: --I have never actually been to an actual shoe-shiner NOR have i had my shoes professionally cleaned until I went to this place! --I am super detail-oriented and I focus on the entire customer experience. --My review is ONLY on this particular location, I haven't been to the others. Before I came to A-Shine, my shoes were in pretty bad shape, there were a bunch of scuffs and it lost it's shine over the years, I'd say my dress shoes were 3-4 years old and had NEVER been shined before. When I came here, they were very courteous and they did an EXCELLENT shine!! Wow! My black dress shoes ended up looking like new! and those scuffs were covered pretty well! I am ONLY going to this exact place for my shines. They really take the time to brush, polish & clean the shoes, it's NOT a quick job, so expect to be there for a bit. AND it's great that they take credit card! I did the second-to-highest shine, amazing! I definitely recommend this place! read more

Came here because the place by home was closed, the bus came early and I didn't want to carry my shoes around all day. They did an amazing job repairing my boots and I loved the shine I got! No joke the worst shoe shine I have ever had done. It was 30 bucks with tip and my shoes were wasted. The shoes are dark brown with white stitching. The stitching needs to be drawn over after the shine with a white wax pencil. The guys waxed over the stitching making them brown and then the white pencil was so old it wouldn't cover the color. Thanks for ruining my Santoni's before my board meeting. read more

I normally brush and shine my shoes but decided to take a pair of Alden whiskey bluchers for a Saphir treatment. I dropped them off and stated I didn't need them for a few days. A few hours later they called to tell me they were already finished. The shoes had a wonderful mirror-like shine. I plan to take my cordovans when they need more than brushing. I initially came here for a quick shoe repair as a strap broke on my shoe. I've come before and they've been very accommodating. Keep in mind, it is a bit overpriced for certain services, but everything in the Financial District is at a premium so it's comparable. I was told my shoe would be done in a week but unfortunately it took a few extra days. I called their office to vent and spoke with Kealani who was incredibly sincere and apologetic. She immediately handled the situation and even gave me a discount for my trouble! They obviously care about keeping their customers happy. read more

This place and the people there are amazing and well worth the price(s). I took a pair of leather boots there because the shoe store I had bought them at repaired one boot, and gave a special polish to that boot only; there was a pronounced difference. Rather than make the trek back to the shoe store, I brought them here and the staff worked on both shoes until I was satisfied with the results. So, I came back with an old pair of Danskos and my black leather Ramones high top Converse and A Shine cleaned them wonderfully. This place rocks. Go here. read more

My husband has his shoes shined at the Embarcadero Center location and he is always very happy with the job. Last week I sent my much-loved eighteen year old Gucci black leather and bamboo backpack for a polish. This backpack was my daily handbag for 10 years and has traveled the world with me for me for a very long time. Needless to say it has seen some wear. Shine & Co. did a beautiful job on it and I am so impressed with the work. The scuff and wear marks were history and the finish on the leather looked fabulous. Obviously a 17 year old handbag/backpack which has gone through a lot is never going to look brand new...but this is as close as it gets. read more

This review is for 555 California Street location. Great shine, very poor customer service. Went in as first-time customer - wanted to drop boots off and pick up in morning. Lady manning the shop was harried and unhelpful. Told me she didn't think they could be ready too early in the a.m. though I assured her I worked in the building and there was no rush. Told me the three different prices but when I asked what the levels were she seemed annoyed and then rifled through back and told me in no uncertain terms "yeah, well it's going to be at LEAST $15." Which the cost is not the issue - it's the sense I was given of disorganization followed by the feeling that I was some sort of inconvenience. Finally agreed to everything and told her they could be ready when they were ready and got the hell out. Went to pick them up at 11:00 a.m. today. Two guys manning the shop one helping customer, one on computer at front desk. Guy helping seated customer says to him, after glancing at me, "are you in a rush?" The guy answers in a monosyllable. I feel awkward. My boots are retrieved. I'm told price - guy takes my card - pointedly asks if I want to add a gratuity (for who - the guy who's not in a rush? the woman who made me feel like an inconvenience? the guy asking the question and putting me on the spot? or the upcoming guy I'm about to describe? Who is really the cherry on the cake of this experience. I have no spine when it comes to tipping so I mumble "sure, put $2 add'l on the card." OH he says, I can't use this card while he's on the computer and hands it back to me. I look at him dumb founded and say "well, I don't have cash so I'll wait until he's off the phone." Guy on phone and at computer who has never looked at me entire time turns around and tersely informs me "well we take personal checks. I'm busy on the phone with customer service (for computer I think)." So I write the check. I'm not happy. I feel pushed around and treated poorly. Shine = fabulous. Customer service = the pits. I'm not going back. Socially conscious business doesn't mean you get a pass on treating customers well. Too many other options downtown. read more
