Sunset Place was in its heydey back when I was in college - lots of great shopping, restaurants, entertainment. Now unfortunately, it's in decline with plans to demolish/rebuild it so many places are empty. But once in a while there will be a cool event like a car show that brings it back to life. Pretty much, the east coast is the Sunrise Place, and the West Coast is the Sunset Place. Yet this is on Florida's East Coast and the US's East Coast, and still it's the Sunset Place... I'm confused. Yet another totally cute area of Miami with a bunch of high end eateries and a really nice boba shop, and a lot of well-to-do shops and people down here. I feel the Shops at Sunset Plazas is broken retail. This property has many things going against it and the situation is not improving. First up parking. Yet you have to pay to park to shop here. The parking garage is a nightmare woven around itself. When you step back into the parking garage it is easy to confuse with another level. Literally a step up or step down makes all difference on getting back to your car. You also have to pay before you leave. The kiosk can be a pain. Recently LA Fitness changed their parking policy. Before if you were an LA Fitness member you would get parking validated for an hour or two. LA Fitness has decided to charge an additional $10 to your monthly membership to include parking. The LA Fitness here isn't all that great or worth it. It's definitely a little hike from garage to gym. The other serious problem at this location is all the empty space and vacancies. There still is a bowling alley, AMC Theater and a Barnes and Noble. That should tell you something when this place still has that bookstore. There's a few other art and activity places. A few restaurants but not much else. What the property management is trying to do is covert all the empty space to offices. Sounds great but there are too many vacancies. Who wants to pay for parking to visit an office. I give this property two more years. read more

The shops at sunset place use to be a 5-Star mall many years ago, the reason I give it 3-stars is because a lot of stores have closed down and there really isn't much besides the AMC movie theater, L.A Fitness, GameTime, or SushiRunner which is new and very good. Lots of businesses have closed down maybe due to rent. But overall, If you are going to the movies or gametime you'll definitely have a great time! *Side TIP* - You do have to pay for parking but you can valet your ticket to get it cheaper if you stub it at AMC or game time! read more

I have been coming to The Shops at Sunset Place since it was built. This center was an exciting place to visit for many years, and my family would shop, go to the movies, and dine her almost on a monthly basis. The last couple of times that I have been at The Shops at Sunset Place, I have noticed that the qualify of the stores that are actually opened has diminished greatly, and that many stores are closed, even their flagship restaurant that was once very popular is not a huge vacant eye sore. Many of their clothing stores have been replaced with discount clothing shops which quite frankly should not even be at this center. We continue to visit even under these conditions for two stores, Z Gallery which is currently being remodeled, and for Pasion del Cielo. If it wasn't for these two shops, I don't think that we would be returning to The Shops at Sunset. The last couple of times that we have visited, there have been very few patrons even though it has been on peak weekend hours. I'm hoping that they are able to attract some higher end businesses to this beautiful complex before the qualify deteriorates further. read more

Shops at Sunset Place is a mall that unfortunately looks abandoned. There used to be so many more stores here but now the stores are limited. There are still plenty of things to do here but it is in serious need of upgrades. If you are a Miamian, you would understand what I mean when I say that this is like a Town and Country. Town and country got a makeover and it was awesome. Sunset Place should be next. It does have a lot of things people like: Yumbrella which is is cool, AMC, Splitsville, painting place, and a kids Gymboree. All very useful however not enough to keep you going. This place use to be an area kids would come into and hang out. Now its deserted...it needs more stores and stores that people frequent! I go to this mall often for movies so Ive seen stores come and go over the years. I enjoy this mall. I like the flow of the center street, the fountain, the staircases that look like a lava flow created the shape of them. I like the spire, and i even like the parking garage. I always find parking on the 3rd floor right by the theater. I wish theyd have more foot traffic to keep stores anchored but wishing doesnt work. It seems like the Sunset drive side thrives more with the bowling alley and theater and the US1 side has a hard time keeping up. Not sure if more events or better marketing would drive up sales, but ill keep going back. Sunset Place is going to get some new life soon. read more

The Shops have changed so much since their moment of inception. I have seen so many restaurants/shops come and go. It really doesn't matter what concept, some survive, some perish. But I like the concept of an outdoor mall. You can stroll around, looking at the windows, enjoying the humidity. This place is generally frequented by teenagers/early twenties kids. I'm OK with Sunset Place. While I usually never come to this particular mall just to browse or window shop, I've come here to bowl at Splitsville, to see a few movies at the AMC 24 / IMAX theater and to shop at a specific store I may need to visit, especially if my only alternative is to drive a long distance to get to another one of their shops. One cool thing about coming here to this multi-storey open air mall is that you can do some shopping, see a movie or go bowling here, then find a bar or restaurant within walking distance and make an evening of it. I don't normally park in the attached garage as it's hell getting out if you try and leave at the same time a movie or two happen to be letting out, so I normally park at one of the meters about a block away from this mall. As others have mentioned, this place gets packed with teenagers, especially on the weekend evenings so stay away if dealing with packs of teens isn't your thing. read more

I love this mall! Located on Sunset and 57th Avenue is one of the nicest open-air shopping centers in Miami. It has restaurants, AMC movie theater, bowling alley (Splitville), bookstore (Barnes & Noble), Bath & Body Works, clothing stores, and much more. The parking is part of the building and is charged at a flat-fee rate, you can get a discount if you validate the parking at the movie theater or at Barnes & Noble. Sometimes there is live music which you can enjoy for free. It is always nice to walk around this mall and even onto the surrounding areas which are filled with nice restaurants and stores as well. Highly recommend this mall for going to the movies, the food establishments or for just a nice walk. read more

Obviously you can shop till your heart's content among the dozens of name brand stores, work out at the LA Fitness, watch a movie at the AMC theatre, but where else would you find the likes of musician, Peter Betan, playing his heart out on acoustic guitar ? Why right here at center of it all at South Miami's, The Shops of Sunset Mall. And he is just one of the musicians that are featured here one or more times a week. The venue and acoustic qualities of the steps provide an amphitheater-like setting for music, resonating against the buildings and courtyard. Sadly, most of the mall is vacant. But what it does have is worth a visit. Barnes and Noble, Tea and Poets (which was brewing their own delicious lavender tea way before Starbux), AMC Theatre. I wouldn't call this a mall. It's more of a small collection of shops. The Shops at Sunset Place is kidding itself when they charge for parking. It's not like it's in San Francisco or New York. Parking aside, I like browsing the shops. Banana Republic, Express, Z Gallerie, and B&N are my usual go to stores. It's a clean and well maintained shopping area. There are numerous security guards throughout. I sometimes stop by the Whole Foods nearby. The AMC Movie Theater is probably why this place stays alive. read more

It was my first time coming to this mall or shops complex recently. Parking garage is not free however you can get it validated from certain places such RH, movie cinema, gym etc. And they are pretty serious about getting your validation done right. Even if you don't go to those certain stores etc, the parking is not too expensive. This is a nice shopping area compared to your traditional indoor mall. It has a south Miami flair by you being able to walk out doors in between the different stores. I liked the outside vendors as well selling things out of their booths. If I lived in the area I would visit it frequently but since I don't live in the area I would not go out of my way since most stores are in my near by malls. However their Restoration hardware store here is grand so might go there to make a special trip and see other shops along the way inside Sunset Place.~ read more

I've been here a couple of times for the first time this year and so far I find it's a pleasure mall to shop and find good places to eat. Saturday my family and I visited to take part in their annual Easter Egg Hunt. It was so busy and swarming with excited children who anticipated all of the fun to come. I got there early because I just knew we had to. Only two of my kids were in the age range to participate so the rest of them hung out with Dad and observed the fun from a distance. When we arrived the mall wasn't too busy, yet. But as soon as we get closer to the check-in line for the event we then saw how many other patrons believed in getting there early. The line was long and growing with parents and kids, and parents of those kids who were trying to keep them calm and not get into fighting matches with their siblings. And the sun was hot! I wasn't expecting that so I quickly spotted out a few shaded areas around the mall with good covering to protect us from the sun. While my family sought out the shade I remained in the line because I didn't want to loose my spot. They made it very easy to sign up through an event's page so I had my barcode out and ready to scan. There was paperwork to fill out and bracelets to get for the kid' wrists. They needed these things to participate in the petting of the bunnies. The mall began to get busy with shoppers and more participants. They did a great job setting up different activities for the kids in all parts of the open area of the mall. There was the Easter Egg Hunt game happening directly in the center of the mall, and the petting area set up nicely, in a grassy area, under a tent. Then there was music playing and kids dancing to some of the popular kids songs at the stage area. There was also an area to take pictures with the Easter Bunny. The stage was set for a perfect day and those kids were hungry for fun. It wasn't an actual "hunt" that took place however, it was more like a grab as many eggs as you can without being trampled over by competitors. Honestly, it was more than we expected. It was mayhem, a frenzy, kids clawing, grabbing, crying, being lifted in the air and over the gate by their parents because they wanted their kids to "win". Unfortunately, because of this setting, my kids didn't participate. It was way too wild and crazy. They just wanted to stand outside of the gate and watch which was fine by me. After it was all said and done, we enjoyed browsing some shops, doing some shopping, and grabbing little treats here and their to eat. The mall has two levels, with shops upstairs and downstairs, with a huge open area in the middle. There is also a movie theater, and an arcade that is full of games, pool tables, a huge dining area to sit and eat, and a bar for a quick drink or two. Make sure you get your parking pass validated before you leave at any one of the stores that offer it. read more

The Shops at Sunset Place, a known spot in Miami, is a place I can remember since childhood. I went there for epic IMAX movies on school field trips and shopped around with my family. I even went to Gameworks a few times with friends, now there's Gametime. Although the businesses have seemed to die down and the mall is not as bustling as it used to be, I still go there from time to time. I like their movie theater and I can't wait to go to the bowling place next to it called Splitsville. This mall is an open mall and I love to walk around it as well as seat in one of the cafes there. This outdoor shopping mall is definitely outdated but I heard that will remodel and modernize it and I'm hoping this will happen very soon. The good thing is that you have an hour of free parking which comes in handy for me since I work nearby and like to have lunch here. A lot of their shops had to close so there is a lot of empty space. You can still find some restaurants, cafés, a candy store, an indoor playground, a gym, clothing shops, a movie theater and a bowling alley there. I can not believe how this mall has become a dead mall. No more VS, Bath and Body Works, Disney, Gap, etc. They are only 6 local stores left and very random. One sales eclectic item, pretty cool stuff, the others are 2 painting places, Its Sugar, Tea & Poets, etc. No cloth stores, at least of my interest. AMC Theater, Barnes & Nobles, Game Time and LA Fitness are the only stores that are worth paying parking at this Mall ‍ Hopefully they do something to bring renamed stores back. read more

The concept was good. The execution dismal. How do I begin? The parking garage was designed by a complete idiot. Considering the lack of common sense in engineering in Miami why am I even surprised? So its too small to maneuver normal sized cars and towards the bottom they have to block off a ton of parking spaces because it gets so crazy those would virtually be trapped when it did. Nice going slick. The mall itself again, good intentions but its spread out in a not so cohesive way. The theatres are a joke since you purchase tickets on one floor and go to the theatres on another. How about the fact that the staircase from the parking garage is so small when its really full everyone has to walk single file up and down. Of course being in Miami that means that some idiot will try to walk next to his/her friend and don't fit therefore pushing you (in this case, my daughter almost making her fall). Fail fail fail... The stores themselves brought this from a one star to a two. Sure they have some decent places - Z Gallery, Nike.. but why bother coming here if you don't have to? I'm always teasing my lady Yelper friends on their shopping habits, so this review isn't about their clothing stores. Besides I don't think they are too strong in the men's business wear department. I come mostly to LA Fitness, but have also indulged at a couple of the food places (Marinos, LA Sweets and one of the crepe carts). I've also gone to the movies here. Parking's more than a little complicated and it can be pricy since they go to flat rate (about $6) parking even on weeknights. However you can get about 2 hours validated at the gym & theater. Speaking of the parking, the lines at the attendant are long but that's because management is trying to convert it to an automated facility. Still the line may be worth it because the auto pay machines can be temperamental, particularly for validated tickets. Its an open air mall with a courtyard; you're exposed to the elements whether a 100 degree summer day or monsoon. I've gotten a couple of unwelcome showers running to my car since some parts have no roof. Also, the crowd trends on the young side. Bring some hearing protection whenever the gazillionth installment of Twilight is out! read more

This South Miami mall has really fallen on hard times over the years. It used to have a Virgin megastore that was unique in South Florida and once that went out of business the best anchor was Nike, which also closed a couple of years ago. Although there is an LA fitness, Regal multiplex and a bowling alley that's great for locals, there are quite a few shops that have gone out of business and give the mall a rundown feeling. A few "mall of America" suspects are still around such as Gao, Bananna Republic and Hollister and Forever 21. There's also a Z Gallerie, an interesting chain for furniture and home accessories. My personal favorite is that it is one of the few Miami area malls with a Barnes & Noble so readers can pick up their weekend reading material here. There's a charge for parking in the cramp multi level garage, not making it the easiest place in the world for a quick visit All in all, this is simply OK if there is a specific store you want to visit or you were in the neighborhood, but there are much better shopping malls nearby (Dadeland 15 minutes south) read more

My little escape from Downtown Miami. I love this place. It is small but with a good selection of stores like Forever 21, American Eagle,Urban Outfitters,... The theatre is nice and right next to the mall there's the Whole Food market which I totally adore. Nothing bad to say about it! When Sunset Place first opened, it was exciting and filled with shops. These days, however, it's lost some of its appeal and has almost as many empty spaces ready to be leased as actual shops. It still has the original AMC theater and Barnes and Noble since it opened, but the rest of the mall is in flux every few years. There is a trendy bowling alley, a few clothing stores and boutiques, and some novelty shops like a candy store and color me mine, and a few restaurants. Sunset Place, in my eyes, is iconic to SoMi. The actual mall is full of shops and entertainment but then it goes on to all the streets surrounding it. Need a place to eat? You will for SURE find something here. Parking is plentiful and the garage now offers your first hour FREE weekdays until 6pm. You can get it validated if you go to the movies or dine at one of their restaurants and end up paying $1. Not bad at all. When I think of Sunset Place, my first question is always "What's considered Sunset Place?" Yes, there are the typical mall-like stores and a couple random restaurants that are clearly Sunset Place. But, there are also the places like Green Monkey, Winn Dixie, and other restaurants and shops on curvy hidden streets. The mall itself is decent. It definitely does not have as many stores as Dadeland, but it is very convenient for students who need to find something at Express or Forever 21. Since it is so close to the university, stores can run out of new clothing pretty quickly. The restaurants here are nothing special. However, if you are considering Menchie's as part of Sunset Place, then I can say the frozen yogurt option is superb. The actual Sunset Place is a very teeny bopper mall. Friday nights look like any cliche high school movie. There is also a movie theater that is usually fairly crowded. Parking in the garage isn't too much of a pain. The people in the garage are crazy, but that is Miami driving in general. But, those meter checkers are like sneaky little bugs. Don't park for one second longer than the amount of money in your meter or your frozen yogurt will end up costing $40. I have seen it happen before. In summary, it will surely do in a pinch and satisfies a relaxing Sunday afternoon, but Sunset Place is not as expansive as many other Florida malls. read more

This mall has large IMAX theater, bowling alley and a few very good restaurants and has been around for some years, but has never really taken off. Although it's located off US1 has heavy traffic flow all day and is neighboring Coral Gables and Pinecrest has't helped it much. The second incarnation of this mall is slowly dying. Anyone who remembers the Bakery Center will notice the similarities. When it first opened the place was thriving, but the place seems like a victim of bad city politics, aggressive parking enforcement, death of retail, and better shopping options elsewhere. To start, parking in South Miami is a nightmare. I have countless stories of aggressive parking enforcement people ticketing for the most minor reasons. Parking at the mall garage is equally painful, why pay here? Just drive to Dadeland mall. The city of South Miami just doesn't get it. All the years of hassles in South Miami have made me sour on everything about South Miami. The sooner this mall dies and gets flattened the better. read more

But the cool atmosphere of a nice outdoor mall is really cool still. Love the vibe of walking around shopping here. I think they could probably bring a few better shops and restaurants. I love the ambience of this mall as it is an enclosed outdoor mall. You feel like you're in a little village when you're walking in it. The surrounding areas are great too -- with cafes, restaurants and street front stores. Great urban feel and there's a Metrorail nearby. There are A/X, Aeropostale, AMC 24 theatre (with rearview window captioning for the deaf as well), banana republic, Barnes & Nobles, a gelato (italian ice cream) place, pizza place, internet cafe, Virgin Megastore and Gameworks (a great arcade) to name a few stores here. read more
