My review might be different due to the fact that this was during the winter but the place was obnoxiously loud you couldn't hear anything that was going on over the music and the conversation that was going on at other tables it was almost impossible to carry a conversation with the person next to you. The Skip is perfectly described as a Tiki Bar that crashed into Christmas. The drinks were pricey considering when they arrive the whole thing is jammed with ice and but very strong. Seeing as though it's freezing outside and Christmas themed I wish they had some fun Alcoholic Coffee or Hot Cocoa drinks. I love the glasses and mugs though.I So cute and if you can't resist..... The Christmas bar was fun! We had a bit of a grumpy waitress for our group, but I was able to overlook it with the environment. The drinks all seemed fun, but from the perspective of someone who doesn't drink booze, I can't comment on the alchy drinks. I had a simple soda-water with lime and was pretty happy to hang out with coworkers there though. Our group had some shots and overall had a nice time and it was nice to be able to catch up with everyone in the Christmas environment (I think this was my first Christmas themed bar when I was there in December!). The Skip in the summer is going to get five stars just for being in The Belt and having that outdoor party atmosphere... they could serve nothing and that would be enough. But honestly, we were there on a Tuesday night around 4pm, (opening), and it must've been some sort of unannounced Happy Hour because we ordered two of their specialty cocktails: the Skip old fashioned and the little pigeon, both $9 and somehow they were only $5 each.... And two of the best and strongest drinks we had at any nearby establishment all night. Tables filled up quickly at 4 and as far as I can tell, this is a self-service kind of place tho I noticed someone clearing tables at times. I had skipped this place on previous Belt visits because they didn't have food but I noticed a food menu last night. We had already planned to eat elsewhere but this can be a one-stop-bar now. I had left my name and tbh e security guard saw us first in line when he said "you guys can't stand front of line like this" we were waiting let be let in since it was packed only to be treated like this. This bar has a really great concept/theme... unfortunately, I think if I had to do it over again, I would have "skipped" this one. When I arrived with a group of colleagues, I instantly felt like an inconvenience to the cocktail server that was working. The server rolled her eyes multiple times at our crew. After feeling some attitude from her, I opted to go to the bar to get drinks (I'm sure that didn't make things better, but I'd rather give my tips where I feel welcomed/appreciated). The bar staff was much friendlier and quick to put a drink in your hand. The temperature in the bar was VERY warm. So warm that even after stripping our coats off we were all quite toasty. We asked our server if there was anything that could be done, she said no. I honestly hate writing reviews like this one. I worked in the service industry for a long time. I know how much working with the public can put wear-and-tear on good spirits, it's a tough job. But a bad attitude will keep me away from any space, regardless of how great the product is. Such a fun concept, decor, festive drinks, you make it. Unfortunately, we had such a Scrooge-ly customer service experience that it chipped away at the overall experience and festive atmosphere. Our group arrived on a Thursday evening and asked where to be seated and how the ordering process works, the woman working the room seemed perturbed by us from the getgo despite our group being patient and flexible. She proceeded to be short with us during the ordering process despite our efforts to warm her up. Honestly, it was odd how unwelcoming she was given that there was plenty of room for more customers when we arrived and only half of the space was filled. The room features a tiki holiday theme with projected holiday movies, cozy low lighting, a bar and handful of small tables. The menu matches the theme with tiki inspired drinks and a signature mint chocolate shot. Our group ordered a variety of the Christmas tiki themed drinks and a round of shots. We ended up staying 1-2 hours and everyone ordered 1-2 drinks over the course of our visit. If we had had a different customer service experience, I have a feeling this would have been a five star experience. read more

Love. I'm absolutely obsessed with anything festive and seasonal and Miracle and The Skip does not disappoint! First off, the bar is decorated absolutely adorably! There's Santa, lights, and a gingerbread train. The beverage menus are Christmas cards and all of the glassware is super festive (and for sale)! The drinks are above and beyond-festive names and delicious. I started with the Jingle Ball Nog- cognac, amontillado sherry, peanut butter, almond milk, pandan, cream, nougat syrup, egg, and nutmeg. Super refreshing and the pandan gives it a super christmasy look, would definitely recommend. If you're looking for something in the lighter fruity side, the christmapolitan is the way to go. I've stopped in here twice for happy hour. Once in summer and once in November. In the summer, it was packed, long lines and limited seating, but still a great spot. In November, definitely less crowded. They have great happy hour prices. I've had the Skip gin and tonic, Skip old fashioned, and Little Pigeon (a tequila drink). My review matches the size of this bar: TINY! It's a cute little bar hidden in the Belt/alley nestled between the Z and Vicente's / Standby. They have a pretty good selection of alcohol considering the size of this bar and they do have their own restrooms right around the corner. In the warmer months they have an extended patio which sits in the middle of the alley but it's still fun when it's busy. They play chill music. The skip is kinda cool! It's basically a chill little outdoor bar, although there is some covered seating. Between the fact that it is in an alley, and there are garage doors, it kinda feels like you're hanging out in a (cool, at least), garage - one with a walk up bar that happens to serve VERY boozy slushies. The drinks are definitely not lacking alcohol here, which is good, because there is nothing worse than a weak drink. Yes, the vibe is cool and I love the area it's in, but it wasn't "my thing" per say - at risk of sounding much, much older than I am, it's quite loud here and thus a little hard to have a conversation. This may be my absolute new favorite bar in Detroit. First off, location is fantastic! If you've been lucky enough to find Standby, then you'll have no problem finding The Skip, it's in the Belt (alley way) off of Broadway next to the Z parking Garage. This is not your typical bar, it's is an outdoor bar with a very limited covered area. They have a unique drink list and craft beers, although I did notice they have Hamms (really??). I ordered a frozen cucumber margarita which was excellent. I'm normally not a lover of frozen drinks but on a hot day this tasted like heaven. How adorable is this holiday pop up bar?! From the smell of fresh evergreen and the cozy warmth that makes you search for the hearth, this is then holiday treat of the season! Located in the Belt, a cute alley turned into a local art installation, the Skip Bar is totally transformed during 11/24 -12/24 to a Christmas themed wonderland. Imagine the fun of watching holiday specials on the big screen while choosing from the menu of warm and cold holiday inspired cocktails. My very favorite was the warm mulled wine drink coined the "Bad Santa"! All of the drinks are served in decorative Christmas glasses or mugs that could be purchased as keepsakes to complete the festive theme. The spot only holds about 25 on the inside. There are tables right outside, but no alcohol is allowed outside the premises. The only thing keeping this from being a five star experience was the noticeably unhappy demeanor of our server, that seemed to put a damper on the whole mood of the place. I mean my friends and I couldn't help wondering who could wear a constant frown when working in this magical place?! The few times I've been here with a group a people, it's been fairly enjoyable. This bar is in the Z Lot alley next to the parking garage with some other bar or food options. We've only walked up to their "outside service" area where you don't have to sit down inside the establishment. You can either get cans of beer and walk around in the alley or you can get mixed drinks in a plastic cup. It's pretty convenient since it's a fairly small area to be in. My fiancé and I both love the skip, just everything about it, especially during the holidays. The unique cocktails they offer and the fun holiday glassware. We love the whole fun environment too. I decided it was important to support all of our favorite places that are still remaining open to some degree during the pandemic. The Skip is doing to go cocktails with just looked so cute and fun, as they were! However, I won't be back to get more. The pick up process is an absolute nightmare! After you order you get an email that says just show up between 3-6pm and park by the pick up sign and text to let them know you're there. I couldn't park on the same side of the parking garage driveway as the sign was due to the mass amount of cars there and pilled around the corner so I parked right by it on the other side of the driveway and texted. That's when I waited for over a half an hour for someone to run my drinks out as they were to all the other cars parked behind me. I finally decided to get out. I found one of the workers who was running drinks to the cars. He said there was a line... I had no idea why there would be a line, the email said they were using a text system. So I waited another 15 minutes on the sidewalk to get the drinks I had ordered. Not only do they have fun drinks and snacks, The Skip makes me feel safe with their standards and protocols. Tonight, I witnessed a middle-aged white man attempt to walk through the Belt, which houses the Skip and has a mask-required policy, without wearing a mask. The extremely nice bouncer stopped him, explained he needed to be wearing a mask, and the man got defensive and started recording the bouncer. The bouncer was calm and collected, slowly walking with the man and asking him to leave or put the mask on. I was fearful of the man as he got further agitated, and he actually reached down to his pockets/side of his belt multiple times. I am not sure if he had a gun or a taser, or he was just doing this as a scare tactic. I was extremely scared for the bouncer, as he simply shouldn't have to deal with this on top of his normal job duties. The man finally left with a few other middle-aged white men, also recording. It seemed like this group was going place to place, trying to antagonize and provoke employees that are simply enforcing the rules that they did not necessarily create yet have to enforce. No business wants this situation, but this is the reality that many are facing. I am really grateful for the Skip's enforcement of mask-wearing and the employees really handled this incident with grace and care. I will definitely come back. What an interesting little place tucked away in The Belt downtown Detroit. It's not very big and could be easily missed, but it's an amazing stop nonetheless. It's an open air bar with unique decor located in an alley. How many times can you say you've gone someplace like that? And that it was enjoyable? Here's your chance! One thing I have found is that REAL bartenders are a dying breed. Kind of like the master barber. Most places you'll have your drink served to you by someone with a decent personality and a pedestrian knowledge of how to actually make good cocktails. The Skip is the complete opposite. I wish I would have gotten our bartenders name, because he was one of the most knowledgeable and skilled people behind the bar I have seen in a while.
