I love the Skip for its extraordinary efforts in decorating for every season. From tiki to Halloween, they do it right. Currently, it's the Black Lagoon through Halloween. We made reservations in a weekend but it wasn't necessary at 5. What I didn't know what this theme is a pop up much like Miracle Bar around Christmas. The mugs are not really made for The Skip and can be found online for less. Most importantly is the drinks are not good. They're not spirit forward, they're full of mixers. Such a bummer because they do make good cocktails occasionally. We were one and done this evening due to the bad drinks and loads of people who brought their kids to this bar. The decor is great. I had an awesome time at the skip. My cousin took me here while I was visiting for the Christmas holiday. I loved that the entire place was adorned in Christmas decor and all of their menu items had a Christmas theme to them. I hate that I forgot the name of my drink, but it was a pineapple base drink with rum and was extremely delicious. The prices were fair and the service was good. Wow, I can count the times I've hung out at places in alleys. It's such a rare sight in the cities I've been to... and in some cases, it's weird! But at the same time, it's really cool, especially when the weather is nice. And cool lights and wall art are posted up to make the alley feel really welcoming, and I love that. The Skip itself has major Tiki / beach vibes, and it was recommended to me by multiple people when I said I was traveling to Detroit for a work trip. Staff were friendly, music was on point, and sitting on one of the spacious benches outside was just so relaxing! It was on my last evening in town, and I most definitely enjoyed every moment there. Anyone who's around during the warmer days should definitely drop by. I get a feeling it's unbearable on weekends, though. Come during the week if you can :). read more

The skip is a nice outdoor/indoor bar. You can walk up and sit outside or go inside to sit down. They served frozen drinks, specialty cocktails, shots and a long list of beer and wine. I had got the frozen cucumber margarita which was very good and very strong. The cucumber flavor was very subtle at the end. My cousin got a watermelon frose, which was very fruity and strong. The Skip is one of my favorite places to grab a few drinks in downtown Detroit when I'm coming in town for an event! They have a wonderful drink menu (although not always updated online) that embody a tropical element. Service is always friendly and efficient - as you order at the bar and then find a seat. In the summertime, you can also order from their bar in the alleyway and drink along there. The most recent time I was there, I ordered a Little Pidgeon - a play on a Paloma and then a frozen cocktail (pictured). I love having a Tiki Bar in the cold Detroit days, where they even bring the holiday fare in the summer time. The bar is quite small, but I have never had any issues grabbing seating for a group of 3-6. The drinks are so fun and change staying up to date with some pop culture references - even including a White Lotus (TV Show) drink on their menu. The bartenders are great and you have to order at the bar, it I have had experiences where there is a wait staff - I think it just depends on the day. Located in the belt, you have beautiful alley views, string lights, tropical vibes, and delicious frozen cocktails... what more could you want?! 3 Stars for a fab drink menu and a LOVELY space (decorated to the T) with a server who was kind of over it... I was able to check out The Skip while they were decked out for their Miracle pop-up and LOVED the merging of tiki/christmas decor. The space is pretty great- right off of an alley and boasting kickass garage doors that, I imagine, are open during the warmer months. Besides the decor, the drink menu looked legit and the bar was stocked with some really great bottles. Though I played it super safe with an Aperol Spritz (#basic), I got to taste a few other concoctions and can tell this place knows their cocktails! The one downside was we had a grumpy/annoyed server who seemed over it and definitely in no mood to be friendly. It was our first time there, so we may have had a few questions, but to me, the key to a great cocktail bar isn't just the drinks (though those have to be on point), but also the absence of pretentiousness/annoyance at non-regulars or outsiders that is an unfortunate stereotype/caricature of hip cocktail bars. When we asked if the heaters could be turned down a bit (I'm a FL girl and my head was on FIRE) a polite "naw, we aren't able to do that unfortunately" would have been appreciated versus the annoyed "no" we got. This garage/warehouse/cinder block space has been totally transformed into an electric Oasis with tiki cocktails and street food. Some tables under cover and some are out in the elements. The food seems a little slow to get up and running at the bar's opening time (25 min for chips and cold salsa) but it eventually came. They're on island time y'all. read more

This was finally my first time here! Expect a wait on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday night. We were a group of 6 so we did end up waiting about 20 minutes; however, we ended up having the large group in front of us not want a partial standing bar table so we got in faster than if we had waited for a full sit-down table. The decor for Christmas was fun!! I love the beach bum berry (tiki version of miracle bar) decor and vibes. The drinks were very good and their alternative for one of the drinks being sold out was a phenomenal frozen Irish coffee which I think is something they often offer? We went the weekend of Christmas on a Thursday night, I don't know how busy other Thursdays normally are... Bartenders were FAST, waitstaff was friendly and decently quick too. We love The Skip, especially around the holiday when the Sippin' Santa Pop-Up transforms the place into a festive, holiday wonderland. It is a December tradition for us to visit at least once during the month. Obviously, this couldn't happen this year. Fortunately, The Skip offered their holiday cocktails and glassware to go, so we were able to recreate our tradition at home. Ordering was easy online and the staff was very accommodating with a delivery request. We ordered the Sippin' Santa, Parrot in a Pear Tree and Runaway Sleigh. The bartenders need to get their crap together, they seem to not even care about how quick they make drinks. They should do limited time seating, due to the size of the venue. My wife and I shared two cocktails: the Little Pigeon, which is essentially a Paloma with coconut water, and the Brazil vs. Mexico, which has cachaca and mezcal. Both were delicious, but the Brazil vs. Mexico was incredible and beautifully presented with a flower -- you should try it! The Skip is a really cute, casual bar that's great for groups. We stumbled on it when we were looking for another bar, but we're glad we stopped in! It's a cool little alley with a bunch of other bars, and there are cute lights set up all along the alley. The bar is half outdoors and open-air, so dress appropriately. We got there around 11 p.m. on a Saturday night, and there was a good sized crowd already. When the Tigers game got out, the place became packed with all the Tigers fans! It was actually too packed for my taste at that point, so we left for a different bar. The crowd also got a lot younger as the game got out, and there were a lot of people in their younger 20's there. They have a pretty big beer selection, and they have slushy machines with a lot of cool, interesting flavors! I didn't get to try the alcoholic slushies, but they looked pretty good. They also had a food cart to the side. We had just come from dinner, so we didn't get any of the food but it did smell delicious. Overall, this is a great, casual place to come for a beer. IRISH COFFEES (old forester 100, intelligentsia cold brew, cream, sugar, cocoa)!! The first time I had these frozen, caffeinated delights were in NOLA (Check out Erin Rose). The Skip's version is noticeably boozier, IMO. Also, I don't know if it was in my head but the fact that it was Intelligentsia cold brew made me feel like it was more premium and worth the $9 for the small cup. The boba straws also made me laugh a little. My favorite frozen beverage was the French 75 though. It has bombay sapphire, lemon, sugar, cava. It's very refreshing, light and the cava adds slight, fizzy mouthfeel! It was TORTURE that they were cooking food right next to the bar line. If I hadn't had dinner right before, I would've gotten something. All sounded/look delicious. The Skip's alley space is pretty cool, unique too.
