In case you haven't read them, I'll catch you up on most of my other reviews by saying I am borderline obsessed with cake, and especially wedding cake. So when planning my wedding for June of this year, cake- delicious cake, to be more specific- was a definite priority. By the time I discovered The Sleepy Baker was in business, I had already ordered and paid for my wedding cake with another bakery. But when I saw some of The Sleepy Baker's beautiful cakes on her Facebook page, I was convinced that we needed a cake for the rehearsal dinner too! I'm so happy my fiance agreed : ) TLiz (the Sleepy Baker herself) did a fantastic job with our cake! Here are some highlights: -The design: to say that Liz is super creative is an understatement. I gave her a copy of our invitation, a few pictures of myself and my fiance, and told her all I knew I wanted was a marzipan version of us as a cake topper. In other words, I gave her almost no specific guidelines or inspirations, and she managed to make a ridiculously cute cake that nobody could stop talking about. (I'll post a picture stat!) -The taste: ABSOLUTELY the most important aspect of the cake, and I gave her no specific flavor guidelines outside of being different from our 3 wedding cake flavors. She recommended her "drunken" Champagne cake, and it was unbelievably good. So moist, so dense, and not sickeningly sweet. Perfect for our occasion! -The price: I essentially told Liz what he had left of our wedding budget that could be allocated toward cake, and she made it work. I can't guarantee a price because we never set a 'per slice' amount, but ours was less than $3 per slice. And that is practically unheard of for occasion cakes. I did have to send someone to pick up the cake, and since she's currently baking out of her home, I'm not sure if/how tastings go. June 26, 2013 Liz Berman made the most incredible Elvis Presley Cake for my husband's 70th birthday. She is so creative and talented, and the Elvis she made looked very very real! The only complaint we had was that the cake was so incredibly delicious that the beautiful FABULOUS cake was gone in half an hour! Liz made the night so special. The Sleepy Baker recently created a phenomenal cake for my son's 4th birthday party. It was a music party and he loves guitars - Liz designed an amazing acoustic guitar cake to satisfy 20, 4 year olds :). The cake was AWESOME!!! My son loved it and it tasted delicious. The Sleepy Baker made a cake for my cat's birthday party! Obviously, having a birthday party for a cat is a ridiculous and silly event, but even if Liz thought I was completely out of my mind, she never showed it. She was very enthusiastic about making our cake and was INCREDIBLY helpful with the design. She was very careful to take into consideration my thoughts and preferences while setting boundaries (based on MY preference) for how much creative license she would use. For this cake, there were only a few things that mattered to me including the main part of the design (cat sitting in a laundry basket - Liz's GREAT idea!) but the wording, colors, etc. didn't matter to me. She asked a lot of great questions before going to work on the cake so I knew exactly what I was getting and which pieces (ex. color) I would be surprised by. I picked up the cake a few days before the party and was very impressed by how it was packaged up and ready for me. The cake did not fit in a normal sized cake box because part of the frosting design extended upwards, but she finagled the box and included plastic wrap so that I could drive home easily without worrying the cake would get ruined. Thanks to the awesome packaging - cake made it home without an ounce of frosting touching the side of the box!!! And of course - the cake was absolutely adorable!!!!!!!!!!! One last comment - TASTE! I picked up my Sleepy Baker cake Friday for a party on Sunday. Per Liz's instructions, I took the cake out at least an hour before the party to let the buttercream get to room temp. and the cake was DELICIOUS!! I even had a slice and enjoyed it and I don't even like cake all that much. All my guests were licking their plates like a bunch of fools because it was SO GOOD! Definitely use the Sleepy Baker for your cake needs - especially if you need something creative and unique. She'll come up with a great design and is so easy to work with. We did our entire order, including all the questions and design discussion, through facebook chat! Doesn't get any easier than that!! read more

Liz did an AMAZING job for my husband's 50th birthday cake. It was a Star Wars-themed event and she captured a specific scene from one of the movies for the cake. We got 3 cakes of which 2 were egg free within the same month ( birthday month at home).Usually eggless cakes that I have had in the past have not been very moist but that was not the case with Liz's. I met Liz through a friend of mine and I asked her to make my birthday cake for my 29th birthday a few years ago. I don't know a lot about baking or flavors, so I'm sure I was not an easy client! The cake was incredible! Not only was in delicious, but she actually made it with a 3D penguin complete with an igloo and mini birthday cake with two candles in it - the details were insane! I stumbled across this bakery by reading Yelp and it turned into a wonderful, positive, delicious experience. When I first made contact with Liz, the owner, I was not sure what I wanted but I knew I wanted a unique cake for my daughter's graduation. After a pleasant discussion we decided that it would be a cake that looked like a Reeses cup and flavored the same way! (My daughter's favorite treat on earth!) Liz sent me some ideas and I choose one that I loved. We set up a delivery date and time and I felt confident that she would get the job done and she did! The cake arrived on time and looked perfect - Reeses would have been proud, my daugher was thrilled and the guests took pictures to send to all their friends. Then we got to eat it - another Wow moment. The peanut butter filling was fantastic, light, creamy and rich. The chocolate cake was moist, chocolatey and delicious. It is rare that you you can be totally happy with any product but this was the exception. From inception through the last bite - this was awesome. I can say that this experience "takes the cake".
