Since the recent closure of the Hog's Head, based just across the road from the Slug and Lettuce, this has become the first port of call for an affordable pub lunch in the business end of Liverpool. The Slug and Lettuce is a great little upmarket pub chain, they serve affordable meals in a friendly and trendy environment! Definitely worth popping in if you're looking for as venue for a business lunch or just for a cheap tea/dinner or a meeting with friends. They have a full bar, with a range of draught beers and bottles, plenty of different spirits, and a small but palatable wine menu! Their food menu ranges from Panini's and burgers, to salads and platters, all at fairly reasonable prices! I like the Slug & Lettuce, it reminds me of a more upmarket Wetherspoons. Situated on North John Street, during the day you will find a lot of people who have popped in for lunch from the commercial district, also attracts shoppers from nearby Liverpool ONE. I have been in a few times and always been served with a smile, the staff seem really friendly and helpful. Very nice pub restaurant overlooking a busy crossroads from its large glass windows. It's on two levels, with the bar up several wooden steps (I don't think there is a lift anywhere) with a crowded dining area containing a number of tables and chairs close together. At street level (so accessible for everyone) is a mixture of seating, including sofas and chairs with dining tables, which are further apart. We found this more laid back and a quieter option although it was chilly near to the main entrance every time the door opened. The subtle background music made it easy to talk, the lighting was pleasant and everything, including the tiled floor, was kept very clean. Wine is the main drink on offer and they sell a good selection of varieties. There are many types of beer, cider and cocktails. My husband was delighted to have some good draught Guinness! The coffees are also excellent and my latte came with a biscuit on the side. The food is good, not too expensive, and varied with four imaginative choices for vegetarians too (curry, risotto, and two pastas). Everything is beautifully presented. The desserts are wonderful too - so hard to choose from the mouth-watering selection! (The menu can be found on their website) We found the service excellent and friendly. The toilets are down a flight of steps - again, I don't think there is a lift. Came here for fish and chips but decided to go somewhere less chain-y than this for it.Opted for the grilled chicken sandwich and it was a great choice. I liked how it was presented in what looked like a wood cutting board and the bowl of fries were great. This started my ketchup/mayo/malt vinegar love. So good! Whenever I have visited Slug, either this or any of the other venues, I have had to wait between 45 minutes and an hour for my food, which is quite frankly disgraceful, despite the popularity of the restaurant and the number of diners, the kitchen should be able to cope, and if not guests should be alerted to the wait in advance, as on occassion I have not. However, when the food finally does come it is impressive, this could simply be because diners are starving by this ponit and will gorge on anythng, but I do think it's just good food! I tend to take adavantage of the Monday offer of two for one on main meals, and particularly like the gammon and pineapple. This restaurant is very clean, there's plenty of seating and wheelchair/pram access and there's always a really good atmosphere be it lunch time or evening. My only complaint is the wait for food.. perhaps also the fact that we were not acknonwledged by the bar staff for twenty minutes (PRIOR to ordering) and had no cutlery when our meals did finally arrive! read more

Let's face it when it comes to bars, the only thing that matters for me anyway is one thing and one thing only. You see it's not the price points or the menu ranges or the decor. All those things are only marginally dissimilar looking at the big picture. The main thing for me when choosing a bar to goto is the crowd. No contest hands down. The crowd creates the atmosphere or the lack of it in such establishments. Now 5-6 years ago Slug & Lettuce was the place to be, the crowd was good, young professionals of the like. I have no idea what on earth has happened since then, but it has turned into chav ville something of late. What's more it's a new breed of chavs, in the closet chavs!!!!!!! I am firmly of the opinion there is a decency and courtesy that all human beings should abide by, regardless of how you parents treated you as a kid. Lardy men behaving badly antics are hilarious to watch on tv, but delusional pea brained idiots seem to think imitating it in real life is just as funny. It is not!! On my last two visits to the Slug, my friend's drink was spilled on numerous occasions by drunk retarded individuals unable to handle a few pints. As much as I would have liked to resort to violence I decided no thanks to something resembling an intellect to merely have a word with the bouncers on the way out. You won't be getting my custom again mate!!! During the day it is a rather different affair but strip it to the bone it still is average at best. The food takes forever to arrive, and when it does you are baffled by what took it so long as it essentially looks like fast food slapped on a plate. Slug and Lettuce thus has manifested itself as a somewhat filthy image in my head, something that you simply do not go near. Liverpool is a city rich with bars that are not marginally but heck of a lot better than this place. Agreed they have loads of branches across the UK. Unfortunately that doesn't mean a damn thing, it merely pin points on the map locations where Chavs can be found on a regular basis on weekends. Hot spots to avoid perhaps!!! For such a timidly-named restaurant, the Slug and Lettuce is a place of perplexing volume. The air is filled with the crashing of cutlery, clattering of dishes and foghorn voices, to the point that you can't hear yourself yodel. Saying that though, this might have had something to do with the shrieking gaggle of women out for a hen party who were sat inches behind us. It's a mystery. The staff here are friendly and very helpful, but in that distressing sort of burnt-out, worn-down way. Years spent serving the loudest diners in Christendom has left them frazzled and painted with a grey pallor, like commandos back from a tour of duty in Vietnam. The food here is quite decent, but the atmosphere is summed up by the fact the very name of the establishment is a joke. What were they thinking when they thought that up? Had the Snail and Cabbage been used? What else did they think of? The Dog-End in Coleslaw? Bluebottle Scrapings? Piss Goulash? I don't mind jokey names for businesses but if it has anything to do with a mollusc slithering across my salad, I'm not chuckling. read more

My friend and I came to Liverpool on Holiday and walked past this place and found the atmosphere quite inviting. It's unfortunate to say that although the service was friendly, the food was mediocre. I ordered the pesto linguine, and my colleague ordered the rump steak. Never have I ever experienced such a bland and dry pesto pasta dish. I was extremely upset since I work in the industry. -- We muscled up the courage to inform the waitress that our meals were pretty upsetting and although she was apologetic, nothing was done to fix the issue at hand. Our check was immediately dropped off and we left a little disheartened with the experience. Please note that this restaurant's food is the equivalent to an American Applebee's. read more

This is a nice light airy bar which has a trendy but not too expensive feel to it. The food is mainly lightbites and drinks are priced reasonably. There are often 50% discount vouchers for slug and lettuce chain so well worth keeping an eye out for them. The staff are OK, similar to most large chain of pubs. The food is quite good, and you cant complain for half price, it is priced between £4-£8 most of the items on the menu. I recently visited this Slug and Lettuce and enjoyed a butternut squash lasagne with goats cheese which was lovely. However, I feel that it is just like a glorified Whetherspoons and would not be willing to pay full price for the food. My lasagne was nice but was very small and cost £8.50! The only reason I went was because I had a 50% off voucher, and I would not really be willing to go again to pay full price. I'd rather go to Whetherspoons to get the same service, same quality food but at half the price. read more

This is a lovely restaurant. I've only ever been during the day but I'm told it's as good at night. The restaurant has lovely decor and lovely staff. The whole building isn't accessible to wheelchairs users but some of it is. I had a fantastic Thai Green Curry, which was full of flavour and very reasonably priced. read more

Great central location, options for sitting by the bar, in a nice comfy couch or even outside. Great choice of menu, the Thai Curry is AMAZING and comes presented wrapped up in a banana leaf. I even once arrived after they had just stopped serving food, but they still arranged to cook me some dinner. A great place for a nice drink or a lovely meal. read more

The food at the Slug & Lettuce has gone right down lately. I used to rave about the food here and have visited several times, but the last few times have been off. The food comes without it's sauces, the steak sandwich comes with so little steak it shouldn't be called a steak sandwich. They had run out of mayo, garlic mayo and tomato ketchup! There were so many other people on nearby tables disappointed with their food, the waitress actually looked embarrassed taking the bills to people. I hope that the food here picks up again as it was really really nice. It is a popular place for drinking too, mostly at the weekend though and the good thing is that the food area is separate from the rest. read more
