I had an extremely disappointing experience here and feel compelled to warn others. This place is owned by a private equity firm, and it shows. They're clearly more interested in profit than patient care. I came in with an issue, and they immediately told me I needed an implant and multiple surgical procedures that would have cost thousands. Something didn't feel right, so I went to a trusted private dentist for a second opinion. He fixed my tooth in 30 minutes with no implant, no surgery, no drama. I will NEVER return here and strongly discourage others from going. If you do end up here, do yourself a favor and get a second opinion. This place is all about upselling and fear tactics, not actual care. Total scam artists. read more

Do everything you can to avoid seeing Dr. Bridget Petersen. She will shame you for having Medicaid and essentially make you feel worthless that you should be happy being seen by anyone, don't dare ask questions or stick up for yourself with subpar treatment or she will gaslight you by saying, "You're being rude. Sit down." I was treated like a child by her for simply trying to clarify what a treatment was. I had been told different things by different doctors at this practice and when I told her what she said was different than Dr. Erickson she retorted, "Well she's not here anymore." Her whole tone and delivery is condescending. Dr. Petersen is the reason I am switching offices and will no longer come here. Patients shouldn't be shamed for what type of insurance they have with her nasty tone and elitist attitude. Do better. Learn some bedside manner. read more

Ok. So strike number 2. I had an appointment on September 14th at 1130am. The dentist said to keep that appointment for the post and crown for my root canal. Not only isy appointment gone, but they are telling me I now have to wait until October 5th to complete it. Never said they were canceling the September 14th appointment. Then they didn't want to take my nformation to have the office manager call me. Shady nonsense when the manager isn't there. Last time, I was left in the parking lot during a Storm knowing I had no vehicle. Losing my faith in the staff up front. The dentist may be good, but HORRIBLE front desk!!! I came home by bus. By the time I got home, I look in the mirror and it's CRACKED! AND LOOK HOW REDICULOUS I look!! 9/2/20 update. Not only was the office manager Nancy unable to explain why they would "move" my appointment for my 2 root canals to my emergency appointment yesterday, but she did not address the crack or pain in my front teeth from the work the doctor did. The emergency was for my left side of my mouth up top. Root canal was in the front. Very POOR practice. So now when I rub my tong along one tooth, it crumbles and I can't put pressure on the other tooth with SEVERE stabbing pain. read more

I finally found an office that cares for their patients! The front desk girls were nice, my encounter with them was brief. The office is very modern and clean. Nancy Gail the X-ray tech was AMAZING! So warm and compassionate, really made me feel comfortable, and with 40 years of experience, she totally knew what she was doing. Aidna the dental hygienist gave me the best cleaning I've ever had, was so knowledgeable and didn't mind all my questions! Dr Peterson is kind and friendly, to the point and wasn't afraid to take on my unfinished root canal another practice left me with. Overall, I'm beyond thrilled I found a new dental office that is clean, respectful, kind, and does a FANTASTIC job at keeping your teeth healthy and clean! read more

My first time visiting this office! First let me compliment the cleanliness! The office was sparkling and had a nice scent too it! Unlike most offices! The staff greeted me as soon as I walked in. I'm overall very impressed with this office! I also liked that the equipment was up to date and the staff was extremely knowledgeable.. and they don't know I have a background in dental assisting. So I knew what to look for! So I would highly recommend the Mattituck office! They addressed me very quickly with my concerns! And found a solution. Ignore the negative reviews! This place is an utter joke. DO NOT go here if you need something more serious than a tiny cavity filled. I told the receptionist I wanted to make an appointment because I broke a tooth and I was in agony, I was told I had to wait a month for the appointment so for an entire month I was eating Advils and Ambesol like candy putting up with the pain which some nights was so bad I couldn't sleep. So finally my appointment came, I did all the things they said, filled out my information online and when I when I went in they did NOTHING!! All they did was take X-rays then the doctor comes in, looks at my teeth for 20 seconds then tells me I need a root canal and they don't do root canals. Oh now he tells me! What dental practice doesn't do root canals? So in other words all they do is take X-rays and look at teeth. So then I ask him if he could write a prescription for the pain and what does he give me? A prescription for Ibuprofen which is what? ADVIL! Absolute waste of time!! read more

I had Medicaid and they was quick to put me in for a cleaning and tons of X rays that I don't need it buy they need the money(covered by insurance)...then was told I have an infection under a bridge that is not covered by my insurance...Wrong...I called insurance twice and crowns and root canal and many other procedures are covered but they never submit ANY preauthorization and from 2 weeks ago i called them only to be told that Leslie will call back...it never happened....either they are afraid not being paid by my Fidelis insurance either they don't care...more likely if I call that I pay cash they will schedule me same day! read more

Liars and thieves! Run! They want to charge you for x rays you don't need and then tell you that if you don't comply you won't get reimbursed by your insurance. Then when you call your insurance company to find out this is absolutely untrue Dr Peterson will lie to your face & the insurance company ! Then she,Dr Peterson says I won't get reimbursed for a crown & post! "Of course you will 100%" my insurance comoany tells me. Hmmmm, so do they charge me and then the insurance company too? Dr Bridget Peterson convinced me into getting a crown by stating that my filling was "too large". Well from the moment she placed the crown in my mouth; I had problems. She excused them by saying that I was under the effects of the anesthesia, so I came back a week later and then she said that she needed to shave all my teeth to make this crown fit. A dentist should never have to sand several teeth at once. That procedure should be illegal. I opposed of course and demanded to get a new crown and she stated that I had sign the forms accepting the crown placement and if I wanted a new crown I would have to pay out of pocket 1500 dollars for a new crown. Do not trust her. She is just looking to make money. read more

Absolutely would never recommend this dentist to anybody!! I've been having a horrible issue that I need fixed and came home from college in North Carolina SPECIFICALLY for this appointment. They called me the day of my appointment and told me that my appointment was canceled because they don't take my insurance and claim that I never said I would pay the full price. Absolutely ridiculous and horrible service. Will not be going back here or recommending to anyone!!! We spoke with this office multiple times prior to my appointment confirming that I would cover the costs of my appointment and they still canceled on me. read more

Do not go to this office. Absolutely the worst business practices. Following my last cleaning the medical secretary asked if I wanted to book the next appointment then or wait to make the next appointment when I knew my schedule. When i called to make the appointment I was told there would be a six month wait. 6 months!! The day before the appointment i received the text asking me to confirm the appointment which i did. The day of the appointment I received a phone call that they no longer took my insurance. I waited a year! The staff is totally incompetent. I would give this office no stars if I could. read more

Due to covid, I haven't seen a dentist in 2 years. My insurance doesn't offer many options, but I am glad that I chose the smilist. I have a terrible toothache and they saw me within 24 hours. The office is clean, modern, and bright. Nancy, the hygienist is Excellent. She spent 45 minutes with me. She is gentle and thorough. The dentist who finally saw me spent 5 minutes with me and was rough as he examined my teeth. Very unhelpful, but I will definitely go back for Nancy. read more

As an update to my prior review, I would like to add the following. I went to a different dentist following my non-exam at the Smilist. The new dentist who did an exam found a cavity that did not turn up in the X-rays. The Smilist charged my insurance company for the x-rays and the non-exam. The new dentist gave me a courtesy visit and did not charge me for the real exam that was done. The cavity that was done was a four surface cavity, similar to the one my husband had done by the Smilist, at a price of $461. That filling broke and my husband was told that it was nothing, just cosmetic anyway. As opposed to fixing the filling, they just scoffed it off - very unprofessional. The new dentist's fee for filling a 4 surface cavity was $250 - almost half the price. There can be no explanation for the difference in price except that, in my opinion, the Smilist's "corporate" offices are way too expensive and not worth it. Dr. Kessler only works on Shelter Island now - I guess he doesn't want to be involved in what they did to his practice. read more

The dentistry is great...and painless! The hygenist and doctors do a fantastic job in the Shelter Island office. I would give five stars, but I always arrive promptly, but usually have to wait 10-15 minutes to go in. My appointment today was for a previous appointment that was cancelled by the office in mid-April. Today was the first available appointment (5-25-2017) they had on Shelter Island in four weeks! I received a call at 2:00 p.m. asking me if I would mind moving my 4:00 p.m. appointment to 5:00 p.m., to which I replied, "Absolutely not". When I arrived at the scheduled appointment time of 4:00 p.m., I waited twenty minutes. When I went in, the appointment went great, had no cavities and got a great swag bag with a new brush, toothpaste and floss! read more

I love my dentist. My family has been going here for a number of years. They are easy on your mouth when doing any dental work and the hygienist that do the cleaning are wonderful. I have no plans on changing to any other dentist that is for sure. read more
