We were just out for a drive and arrived in Smithfield around lunch time. After looking around at the local restaurants we decided on the Smithfield Inn. The charm of this historic building is wonderful it was old enough to be historic but modern enough to be comfortable. We were greeted by Cydney who was the hostess as well as our waitress, a very pleasant young lady who was professional and friendly. It was a Sunday and they were serving brunch, Cydney explained the specials and we decided on items from the menu, it was easy to read and explained the meals. After a brief wait Cydney brought our meals, the presentation was excellent but the taste was even better. I'm usually a big eater but I could not finish the entire meal. I would certainly give this restaurant five stars. As we were finishing our meals the Chef came out and asked if we enjoyed our meals and both of us told him the meals were exceptional. I am looking forward to our next trip to the Smithfield Inn read more

Stopped in for a few drinks and to warm up and overall enjoyed the atmosphere and drinks! Drinks: The pumpkin patch- a cocktail with espresso and liquor and I can't recall what else but no milk or cream. Very good! English Breakfast Tea- including a full pot of tea, cream, sugar. It was delightful! Ambiance: We had our drinks in the bar area and it was nice and comfortable. Went into the main sitting room and they had a fire going. Bathrooms were clean. Service: Hostess who sat us, was nice and sweet. Waitress was very attentive and kind. Bartender checked to see how we enjoyed the cocktail and was very friendly. read more

I very cute little historic restaurant that boosts a visit from George Washington. The food was all very good and service was quick and polite. Ok, this is a heart breaker. The Inn itself is in the cutest village surrounded by adorable shops and houses. There is parking in back of the Inn as well as street parking. The Inn is gorgeous. When you walk in there is an extremely cozy sitting room or front parlor with a fireplace and an intimate seating arrangement. Beautiful furniture and object d'art and knick knacks along with old photos You walk past a staircase right out of the 18th century (I thought of the movie Meet Me in St Louis) and on the right is a cute pub style bar and the left is a gorgeously appointed dining room. No, really, this was one of the nicer Inn dining rooms I've been in. Here is where we lose ground. Seeing a place like this one would expect high things from the kitchen. Sadly, you will be disappointed. We ordered our meal and our server Bailey was just the nicest and most helpful on portions. She worked very hard to make our dining experience wonderful. Sadly, noone told the kitchen staff that food is to be not just edible, but savory. My mom ordered the flounder. It was beautifully presented. It's served with some shrimps on top, seasonal veggies, a baked flounder and fingerling potatoes. The veggies were perfect. The potatoes were meh. The fish...well, while pepper is nice for flavor, there is suchna thing as too much. It really was a a sin because her dish would have elevated this review as it was so good My dish on the other hand is where they failed big time. I got the chicken piccata with capers over pasta with what was supposed to be a white wine sauce. The chicken was pounded to within an inch of it's life....think schnitzel and your close. Then breaded and while it was supposed to be baked you could not convince me it wasn't fried. In fact, I know it was because they burned one side. Then they dumped what seemed the be a whole bottle of capers on top of the pasta and if there were a white wine sauce I would call bullhockey due to the level of grease. Just so sad. There was so much promise and for the cost, they need to hire a better cook. We are willing to give another chance, for lunch, as it was a better selection. This is a wonderful family business. I'm leaving this review to thank all of you who went above and beyond last night to help my 91 year old mother enjoy her night. The service elevator was broken so the chef pitched in and helped carry my wheelchair bound mother up and then back down a flight of stairs so she could enjoy the delicious crab cake dinner she ordered for a party we attended. Okay so. We moved to Smithfield in late 2022. Stopped in for dinner here after the movers left and our meal was just okay. Nothing memorable or anything, but not bad. BUT it wasn't good enough for us to go back. UNTIL tonight. We came out to Main Street for New Years dinner. The new local pub was full, the Wharf brewery was closed for a private event, and Taste of Smithfield was closed altogether for the holiday (fair enough). Smithfield Inn was the only other option so we figured we'd try it again. We were immediately greeted by the hostess and shown their special New Years menu. Menu looked fancy in terms of offerings but the prices were reasonable. I ordered the salmon and my hubby got the rockfish Wellington. Both were absolutely amazing! The meals came with soup, salad, and complementary champagne (New Years special). But the real star of the show were our main courses. Salmon was baked in parchment paper with two slices of lemon. I've never had such succulent salmon before! The favors of garlic and lemon were present without being overpowering. I would 1000% get this salmon again if it appeared on their regular menu. The rockfish Wellington was such a unique dish. The fish was buttery and flaky and the Wellington batter was light and crispy. The sides for both dishes was rice pilaf and roasted veggies. Couldn't get enough of the sides either, they were so flavorful! The head chef came out to speak with each the patrons as we finished with our main courses. He was so sweet and knowledgeable. He mentioned he had only been with the restaurant for two weeks and was working on revising their menus. The latest being for Sunday brunch, which he gave us a sneak peek of and looked so good! This was, hands down, a night and day different experience from 2022. We will definitely make Smithfield Inn a regular stop in our restaurant rotation on Main street. Highly highly HIGHLY recommend this place! read more

So disappointing. Another suggested title- The only dip is the dip in the kitchen who thinks this French dip is dippable. The Smithfield Inn itself is a beautiful establishment with classic old southern charm but don't look at the light gray carpeting too closely. It's filthy looking. After seeing their southern ham biscuits on the food network, we made a plan to visit. We drove an hour to try them. "Smithfield Inn ham biscuit" is listed on the menu as six for $15. Instead of delicious homemade biscuits, we were given tiny store bought rolls with small amount of salty ham. We also ordered "Crustini's with pimento cheese." Maybe the erroneous apostrophe should have been a warning. Instead of freshly shredded cheese with mayonnaise and pimento, we received a hard mound of cheese that we thought might have been frozen. It was not creamy and was almost impossible to spread. I ordered the fried flounder sandwich. It was tasty but so large it was difficult to eat as a sandwich. It fell apart when hand held. My two dining companions ordered French dip. They said that the sandwich was good but the size of the dip was ridiculous. The cup with the au jus was a small salad dressing cup. There was no way to dip the sandwich into this cup. They resorted to dribbling the dip over the sandwich as they ate. When I explained how ridiculous the dip size was, our waitress said "that's good feedback." I got the feeling she wasn't going to tell anyone. So much planning, so much driving, so disappointing. read more

For a few years before COVID, the wife and I used to stay at this peaceful historic B&B/Inn on New Years Eve. The rooms were quaint, the fireplaces inviting and the quiet almost sleepy little town of Smithfield, Va uniquely celebrated the coming of New Years with a Board with lights in the shape of a PIG, (Think Smithfield Hams, and you're here), with a low but enthusiastic attendance of celebrants, issuing in the new years count down while the Lighted Pig drops the last 10 seconds of the year. We always enjoyed the less dense celebrating population and the wonderful meals we had at the downstairs restaurant. Our last visit was in 2019, and we decided that we wanted now to return. The same room we always get, the same fireplace to sit by, an updated quality Pig Board, (lol) and a quiet peaceful but EXTRAORDINARY meal, offered by their new two weeks in Chef, Chef Gary. Not a soul in that restaurant that night had enough to say about the wonderful composition and quality flavor of the entree they selected whether it was the Salmon, or Rockfish Wellington, or the Prime Rib from the menu. No one was expecting the joy they tasted that night. Well done Chef. Well done Smithfield INN. Well done Tina and Bill. Thank you so much for your hospitality. Last year I wrote a review and didn't post it because I felt bad. It is included below, after another scathing review from today. Bailey is a wonderful server. That is where I will start. Stopped by to give this place a second chance today with my mother and a family friend. We ordered two cold sandwiches and a salad, two glasses of wine. Wine was delivered promptly. After an hour, we cancelled our order. As we walked out there was no one in the restaurant. What the actual hell?! Two visits, never again. What another horrible experience, AGAIN. REVIEW I DIDN'T POST LAST YEAR, BUT SAVED: I am an out-of-towner who visits family in the town often. I've always had great service and drinks here but my struggle with the food and management came to a head today. I received, after a considerable wait, a raw burger with a freezing center. In the wait before I tried to reorder, the kind and gentle server (Carter?) left me my side dish which I ate as I was starving and the wait had been long. When I lost my appetite before the server was able to return to my table (under staffed, under managed. I am in food service. The management had full knowledge of the fall festival happening today, and didn't prepare or support their staff well) I was then charged for my side dish. This is not Carter's fault. The manager never touched my table. Would be a one start review except Carter gets an extra one for being lovely. read more

EXTREMELY SLOW !!!! , waitress was on point with everything. But the amount of time you will sit around to wait for the most simplest things like a serving of bread, which every person after us had received but not us. A couple had came after me and my wife and they had ordered and received their entree within 15 minutes of waiting and we had to wait for more than an hour to receive anything. It was Smithfield Restaurant Week, so my wife and I again returned to dine at one of our favorite places, The Smithfield Inn. The warm atmosphere; the friendly welcoming staff; real Southern hospitality service, and the fabulous food. To put it bluntly, our meal was again a deal. A 3-course adventure for $35 each. As usual, the Inn did not disappoint. 1st course, we both had the Brunswick Stew to warm up on. You can't go wrong with this version of the great Southern stew. Delicious. 2nd course, she had the Honey Almond Crusted Cod. Crispy crunchy honey almond crust covering firm white Cod with a honey-bourbon sauce. An awesome dish. Who would have thought honey with fish, but it worked wonderfully. I had the herb-roasted half chicken. Fall off the bone baked chicken with a delicious herb coating sitting on a bed of perfectly cooked Saffron rice. Another winner. 3rd course, this year she had the Smithfield Inn Bread Pudding topped with bourbon sauce - always incredible. I had the banana pudding. I hate to say this, but this banana pudding was just O.K. I would recommend the bread pudding or one of the other desserts. All told coffee, tax and tip, we spent less than $100 for this lovely night out. Bravo again to The Smithfield Inn. read more

The menu selections were very good without trying to overwhelm the diner. Some menus just have page after page after page of items and to me, that means, they haven't perfected any of them. I go to the Smithfield Inn when I'm visiting with my sister. Last night while there I asked for a chocolate martini. It was absolutely delicious! It was the perfect complement to my seafood combination dinner. When I got home, I went right to sleep, and didn't wake up for at least three hours. I had a fabulous meal here with my best friend last night. We had a blast. I've wanted to try the Smithfield Inn for months now - I wandered around the town and walked Windsor Castle park a few months ago and looked at the menu and thought some of the food sounded excellent - they have tons of salads and other options that sounded good - plus - lots of Smithfield Ham. FINALLY - last night was my night. While looking at a condo in Carrollton with my friend we decided to eat in Smithfield. We were easily sat - the bar was bustling and there was live acoustic music but the tables were all free in the main area so we had our pick at around 7pm. We chose a nice corner table. Our waitress, Lorali I believe, was prompt and friendly and brought me some delicious sweet tea. We ordered the Smithfield Sampler Platter which had crackers, ham, bread and butter pickles, fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese. The fried green tomatoes were really good! Our gal brought us a few biscuits on the side so I didn't have to pay extra for those since it already had ham on the platter so we could make some ham biscuits. Yum. My friend ordered the cheesesteak topped with Smithfield ham and the truffled fries - those fries were delicious. I did not taste her cheesesteak but she said it was really good. I chose to get the breaded chicken sandwich topped with a peppered Smithfield bacon, tomato, lettuce, cheese and some tangy mayo or something.... it was DELICIOUS. I upgraded for $2 to a side salad with tomato, cucumber, onion, and carrots with a honey lavender dressing that was really good! They had a really surprising selection of vinaigrette dressings so I was pretty pleased with that. The chicken was hand breaded and lightly fried and the bread was fresh and tasted great. I only ate half since I'd had the appetizer but ended up eating the other half when I got home a few hours later and it was JUST as good. We finished up the meal with homemade peach cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. Our waitress was friendly, the staff were all friendly, the bar was busy and full of people laughing and talking and the live music played the entire two hours we sat and laughed and enjoyed our meal while catching up. We had an excellent time here --- the Inn itself is charming and exudes all the old world elegance you expect from small historic B&Bs. The bathroom at the Inn (I took a photo of course) was so cute! I'll come back for sure if I buy a condo here - and even if I don't when I want to come visit Smithfield and get a little taste of home! read more

I had the almond honey crusted rockfish. My husband got the crab cakes. Entrees come with salads. Freshness and quality was top notch. Portions were appropriate for the price. The most surprising treat was how delicious the vegetables were that came with each entree. Great wine selection. In early September with two young boys we are outside. Nice comfortable and inviting area We had a table on the patio. I didn't even know they had a patio and I been there ten times. It's lovely!! Covered and garden like I always get the oyster Rockefeller. And I did again. We got several and a calamari to share. They came hot and delish. I could eat lots of the oysters. The calamari has medium breading ( not light) but good As usual I got the crab cake dinner with asparagus instead of risotto. I think it's the best crab cake you can get!! Four of my friends had that too and loved it. All lump and no filler The boys had fish and pork chops. They said everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned I love this place!! First tIme here. Pleasant cozy atmosphere and the service was prompt and courteous. The dinner was, well, meh. Had tHe she crab soup, which is my wife's favorite and she couldn't finish it. Strong flour taste. In fact, what she thought was a piece of crab was actually uncooked flour. Crab cakes were good. I could do the roasted potatoes at home better myself. If you're in the service industry, especially a B&B, be polite and professional. He could've said 'we'd love to have you if you're passing this way again! This was a delicious taste of Smithfield. I was in town visiting their namesake company (Smithfield Foods), and so I had a couple days of ham-based meals. That being said, the little ham sliders were amazing and perfect appetizers with the cities signature food. Aside from that, the pot-pie was one of the best I've had. We tried the restaurant Friday night before the show. The service left a lot to be desired. It took forever to get drinks -- even to learn that they were out of one of the draft beers ordered. The menu looked good, but the food was just OK. I had a pasta with spinach, bacon and chicken. It was served in a cereal bowl with a few specks of green and no bacon flavor - in an Alfredo sauce. The chicken was part of a breast, cut and balanced around the rim. The dish overall was bland and not at all what I expected. My husband had the chicken Marsala which he said was OK. There was no salad with the meal and no bread (even though we asked for and we're promised bread). I can't speak specifically for the rest of our party, but I think the only one that really enjoyed their meal had a burger. The restaurant itself is lovely and has a great atmosphere. Service needs an upgrade and they need to work on the menu -- and presentation - it does matter. For the price we paid I expected so much better. Definitely not worth the $$. I'd give it another try for lunch, but probably not dinner. read more

We saw the Smithfield Inn on the Food Network so thought we would make the 1 1/2 hour drive from Virginia Beach to try the food at the Smithfield Inn and their ham rolls. Walking in, the Smithfield Inn is a beautiful, charming Inn. After a quick tour of the Inn, we sat down for lunch. Since they are famous for their ham rolls, we tried a couple for $1.50 each. The ham rolls are about 1/3 the size of a White Castle burger with 2 slices of razor thin ham. The bread was very fresh however we could barely taste the ham since the portion was probably 1/8 of an ounce. I know they were only $1.50 each but I would have truly enjoyed tasting the famous Smithfield ham. They really are not worth ordering. We started with the southern Caesar salad which was very good but thought it was small for $8.95. We ordered the pork and apples, which is described as braised pork shanks topped with demiglace, served over fire roasted apples and sauteed asparagus. Sounds really good but it was not. The pork shank had the texture of a turkey leg with dark, stringy meat and the demiglace had a very strange flavor that did nothing to enhance the pork's flavor. The roasted apples and asparagus however were good. Based on our dining experience, we would not return to the Smithfield Inn. read more

My wife and I needed some "us time" so we booked an overnight getaway at the Smithfield Inn. We arrived in time for Sunday Brunch in the garden. The food was nice, but we were disappointed because many of our first choices were 86'd from the menu. We tried to order a Wedge Salad, but they were out. As a backup I tried to order something else (that I forget) but it, too, was out. And, finally, our server convinced us (that really didn't take too much work!) to order the dessert special, Chocolate Decadence so we did. But a few minutes later returned to tell us the kitchen was out. Pooie! But the dishes we were served were tasty and satisfying. We shared a Chicken Pot Pie. Nothing special about it, but it was hearty, hot, and accompanied with a terrific puff pastry crust. (I wish they had used fresh vegetables; the peas and carrots had the telltale mushiness of frozen product. I also wish they would have used some dark meat in the pot pie, but I understand some diners might not share my preference.) We shared a Club Sandwich that was terrific. The wasabi mayo really brought the flavors together. And we had onion rings, which were slightly on the greasy side, but made from scratch and very tasty. We shared a chocolate cream pie for dessert and it was really good (although we really had out palettes set on the Chocolate Decadence!); cool, creamy and chocolate-y, with a very light and flaky crust. Being in the south, I'd have sold it as Chocolate Silk Pie, but they didn't, which is surprising because the Smithfield Inn exudes southern tradition and hospitality. After our leisurely lunch we checked in and went to our suite. It was nice, cozy, and well-outfitted with a big mini-fridge, a flat-panel TV, and terrific internet service. The room had a separate bedroom and sitting room, so we didn't feel cramped in at all. (The bed was nice and soft, the way my lady likes it!) In the morning we had breakfast "made to order." She had French Toast; crispy, crunchy, sweet and steamy! I had the "sampler" which had grits, Smithfield Ham, eggs and toast. The grits weren't the best I've ever eaten, but they were close! And my eggs were cooked perfectly. I point this out because it evidences that the kitchen staff is very skilled. Everyone at the inn was as friendly and helpful as you could possibly want. We really enjoyed our stay. We wish it could have been longer, but there's no question we'll be back! Smithfield is trying hard to become a touristy draw. They've got more "antique" (read, "junque") shops per block than anywhere I've ever been. There are walking tours and plenty of places to eat and relax. We're a couple hours away from Smithfield, so for us it's becoming our go-to getaway spot. read more

When traveling on business, I like to eat at local places than the typical chain type restaurants. While in Smithfield, VA on business, I decided to stop at the Smithfield Inn for lunch. First off, I would have given it 5 stars, however, some of the service was slow. It looked like they needed a little help so empty drink glasses tended to go unfilled. On the other hand, once I ordered my food, it came out fast. The food was excellent. I went on a seafood theme and started out with the She Crab Soup. It was excellent. I had never had this type of crab before and I could have eaten just this and would have been satisfied. I would have ordered the bowl instead of the cup if this was all I was going to have. My entree was the Ultimate Crab Cake. t came with a large crab cake, fried green tomatoes and succotash. The crab cake was very good. Lots of crab and not too much breading. The fried green tomatoes were a little bland but still ok. The succotash was good but the Lima beans were a little under done. All and all it was a good entree. The atmosphere was great. This was an old inn and restaurant on historic Main Street. I recommend checking out the shops on this street as well. read more

Drove out to Smithfield this weekend, just because it's there and we were needing an excuse to get out of the house. Having heard good things about the New Orleans Brunches at the Smithfield Inn our lunch choice was easy. Great looking place, looks upscale, but has absolutely no pretension about it (I was in shorts and flip-flops, and was not the only one). Service was fast and friendly. I had a couple firsts here. My first Brunswick Stew that did not come from a Dinty Moore can (delicious) and Bananas Foster served flambe table-side (see the pics, sorry for the blur, but I was diving for cover). Quite the show, lots of jealous faces around us...but I think the waiter lost an eyebrow. We will have to come back for a full dinner, maybe even do the bed and breakfast thing. read more

So, I ordered the scallops and risotto. What I received were scallops with white rice topped in some sorta half-melted shredded cheese and topped with bits of bacon. Really delicious seared scallops. Perfect actual bits of crunchy, salty bacon. But horribly mushy, chalky Minute Rice that cooked for three minutes too long. Very discerningly bad and bland white rice flavor. Deception detected. I like risotto a whole lot. I do not like this dish. I might still like the restaurant. To be determined. read more

This place is under new ownership. And has since unfortunately gone downhill. I never go back to re-rate a place. Two times since the new owner took over, I went and first off- they nixed the wings. The hostesses and waiting staff has changed for the worse. No one knows anything at all. Then they brought back the wings and announced it on fb- so I called to order pickup- I had to literally convince the hostess that they do, indeed, serve wings. She told me they didn't and I had to argue before final she checked. Picked up the wings- came home- took a bite- WAY undercooked. Everyone in my house immediately said the same- crazy pink uncooked chicken. We threw it out. But wait, then there's Mother's Day. I made my reservation for 11am, when they open. Well apparently so did 36379588 other people. Which lead to a huge crowd showing up at once and the kitchen getting slammed. It took an ENTIRE hour before we got even our appetizer. People all around us were also upset because of the same reason. I got coffee when we first sat- drank it within 5 minutes- and wasn't even offered more at all in that hour. Guests all around us were like, "what is going on?" "This is a disaster" So so disappointed. It was a set menu so we ordered our desserts to go because by the time the entrees came out (bland btw) it was an hour and 30 minutes in. I got the tres leches and my husband got the cobbler. The Smithfield Inn is an historic bed and breakfast located in Smithfield, VA. The Inn is quaint and full of antique charm. The entry features an autographed dinner plate signed by Paula Dean. The Inn is historically restored and has guest rooms, a restaurant, and tavern. We dined outside in the garden area. The garden is lush and full of multiple varieties of flowers and shrubs. The setting is charming and comfortable, with overhead ceiling fans to keep the breeze flowing and the bugs to a minimum. Traditional fare such as she-crab soup, onion rings, truffle fries, virginia ham yeast rolls, and other favorites are all available. Service was prompt and attentive. All food was freshly served and portions were generous. The garden area is the perfect spot for a spring or fall outdoor dinner, lunch, or brunch. Indoor dining room is decorated to period and extremely dark. Heavy tones and wall papers made for a much more formal-stiff feeling. (A little too over the top for me.) The inside was very warm and inviting. We felt like we could have been at a family dinner. The owner was very friendly and enthusiastic about the wine we picked. Great wine!! I'm know with time the wait staff will deliver great service. read more

Nikki is back and the old Smithfield Inn is making a comeback. We went on Friday several weeks ago and I had the Asian Salmon which was outstanding while my wife had the she crab soup and the salad trio. She said the soup was different than the traditional she crab but was delicious. We returned for Wednesday night wing night (which is back) and the wings were meaty, well cooked and served with a couple of different dipping sauces. For those of you who, like ourselves, had deserted the Inn after the change in ownership I would encourage you to try it again-I think you will be pleasantly surprised. The Inn is one of my favorite restaurants in Smithfield. It's shares the same space as a cozy hotel. This review is only for the restaurant. It has a very quiet atmosphere. Their carpeted floors and wooden chairs give it a comforting vibe. The lunch menu averages around $9-$12 and includes salads and sandwiches. I suggest the chicken salad croissant sandwich with a side of their sweet potato fries. The dinner menu can go up to $28 and had entres like salmon, ribeye, and Chicken Marsala. Try the Smithfield ham rolls which come on your choice of sweet potato or yeast rolls. The service is pretty standard. They do have specials that change throughout the week, so definitely ask. read more
