Upon walking in. It's our first time here. It's very clear this place was a food truck success! Now a strip mall establishment. The place has stainless steel table tops that are clean. The floors are clean and everything is new. Looks pleasant to walk in. The food was very good. The pulled pork was tasty, the ribs were tender and the pulled pork was excellent! I'm not sure how to describe our recent order from the Smoke N Pig bbq truck. Maybe there are some different influences or bbq styles that I'm not aware of at play here? Or, maybe I just had below average cue? Here's what I'll say, it didn't work for me. I'll leave it at that. We picked up our order around 11:30am, so I expected fresh, beautiful delicious bqq. That didn't quite play out the way I had hoped. The brisket was bathed in a pool of liquid. Perhaps it was beef broth? What was going on with this presentation? (see pic) It was as if the beef was so dry it had to be re-moistened? I've never had brisket where it dripped all over the place due to a soaking mess. There was no bark present. Nowhere to be found. It seemed to me that maybe the brisket was smoked for a while been then overcooked in an oven, crockpot, or warmer? No smoke ring and completely missing a pure smoked bbq brisket taste. It reminded me of eating pot roast growing up. This was quite possibly the weakest brisket I've encountered. The ribs also seemed overcooked and had a coating that was weird. I suppose it was a sauce that had over cooked/over warmed onto the ribs? For a person that enjoys a nice rub and the right amount of smoke on ribs, this strange coating left us unimpressed. The chicken's skin wasn't edible, and the meat was a little bit dry. Very average. The mac-n-cheese? Plain. Think of the Kraft mac-n-cheese you make at home. Nothing unique or exciting about it. Would I recommend to a friend to try this bbq? Probably not. Overall, disappointing. Will I return? Likely, no. They have a new brick-n-mortar store coming in the same property that they have their truck. Maybe I'll stop by for another taste someday. read more

I've had the brisket and rib tips on numerous occasions. For the Lansing area, yeah 4 stars but that's not saying much if you live here. You know the food is bland. Brisket is fatty but does have a nice flavor and their sides are on par. Spicy Rib tips were on point and their BBQ sauce is the best I've had in the area. Big words from a Texas turd. When I arrived at the restaurant, I noticed that most of the businesses in the strip mall weren't that busy and neither was the establishment. An employee was cleaning the floor when I came in. That was a good first impression. The restaurant was very clean and all tables and chairs were visibly wiped down. I approached the counter and ordered a pulled pork sandwich and macaroni and cheese. The young lady at the counter was very friendly and when I asked for a side dish suggestion, said she liked the mac and cheese. She quickly brought me the food and I was impressed by the amount of pork and the hearty bun it came on. The pulled pork was really tender and moist. The sauce had a nice flavor profile and wasn't too sweet. The macaroni and cheese was great for a creamy, not baked, preparation. It was cheesy, creamy and well seasoned. Walked in with my son and sat down, you know thinking it was a friggan restaurant and all. 20 minutes later no acknowledgment, no hello we'll be right with you, nothing. People were sitting at the bar and getting served food and I hadn't even gotten a menu, and I had walked in first. Ridiculous. Heard an advertisement on the radio for this place, pulled up the web site and checked out their menu, and decided to give them a try. It was good, but nothing special, not great. I don't make brisket at home, so I can't exactly say what was missing, but some seasoning was missing, it was just bland. On the plus side, the portions were generous, the place was clean, the staff helpful and friendly. To go orders were constantly going out the door while we were there. I didn't like the BBQ sauce they provided in a small cup. I would have preferred that I be given a variety of choices for flavors. Maybe that was what was missing? Just my suggestion. No onions, no eggs but I noticed dehydrated small amount of peppers... guessing this isn't made at the restaurant and purchased from their food distribution company, like GFS bad processed food. We ordered brisket - fatty to be exact it was good don't get me wrong, but pieces had over 1/2" of fat, I removed the fat it was almost 3/4 cup...so basically I purchased fat!!! I have eaten here twice before and never got sick but I ended up getting severe food poisoning Tuesday night within 30-45 minutes of eating their brisket and mac and cheese. Still recovering from it on Thursday night (tonight). When we contacted the place, they brushed off my claim and suggested an allergic reaction. This was not that. We tried there takeout from the new brick and mortar business they just opened. We had purchased food from their food truck on several occasions in the past and were pleased with their food. I was pretty disappointed in both the food and the service on my most recent visit. We ordered the 3 piece chicken meal and the turkey ribs meal. I had called in my order over the phone and it went pretty smooth. When I arrived to pickup my order I asked If I could have some extra Bbq sauce. The large man at the counter looked at me and at the bag and with a nod said don't worry there is some in the bag already. I know and I wanted extra. I felt like he totally blew me off and was being lazy. Not impressed. Poor service here. The food was not terrible but not great either. The chicken was dry (legs and thighs). It's pretty hard to overcook dark meat do I was disappointed. The turkey ribs were also super dry and a small portion. I really needed that extra sauce to cover this food and behold there was only one small container of it for each meal. No extra sauce there. The sides were decent but not incredible either. My wife and I have tried the Smoke N' Pig restaurant on 908 Elmwood Road in Lansing Michigan several times, and we have found it to have the best bbq brisket and ribs in Lansing. Their mac-n-cheese was also creamy and perfectly cooked. We are from Texas and this brisket and ribs from Smoke N' Pig can compete with some of the best. Our favorite bbq in Lansing used to be Meat BBQ, but for the ribs and brisket, the Smoke N' Pig has overtaken Meat BBQ as the best tasting bbq in Lansing. Went to Horrocks to visit the food truck. This was probably the worst brisket I've ever had. It was closer to Italian roast beef than smoked brisket. No smoke flavor and I couldn't detect any rub. It must have been stored in liquid of some kind because it was served wet. Finally, it was sliced incorrectly. Brisket should be sliced against the grain, but this wasn't so it was stingy and tough. So I can appreciate the evolution of this business from a good truck/trailer to physical location. I thought the staff was nice and I thought the layout and branding was great. The food, however, is lackluster. As a BBQ'r myself, I found some missed basics. My brisket was cut with the grain, which resulted in the Brisket being chewy and stringy (time spent cutting the flat and point is an important BBQ 101 thing) and was personally a huge turn odd. Smoke flavor was very light but the meat was moist. The sides were okay. I thought the Mac and cheese was creamy, but wasn't flavorful otherwise. We were excited to try this new restaurant across from Lansing Mall. Restaurant facility is nice and service was fast and friendly. We ordered a variety of food since it was our first time: ribs, turkey, brisket, mac n cheese, corn bread and banana pudding. We were sadly disappointed. While everything looked good, the meat was dry and overly smoked. Brisket portion was way less than the 1/2 lb. we ordered, and the corn bread was good but the slices were way small for a buck a piece. The BBQ sauce has a funny taste. Mac n Cheese did not have much cheese and did not look or taste homemade. The banana pudding was overly sweet and tasted like caramel.
