Before you reach the end of City Island and all the hoping seafood joints that cause weekend traffic to line City Island Avenue, The Snug sits quietly waiting for customers, offering the promise of Guinness and fish n' chips. It has the normal Irish kitsch, street signs and posters, but it is less of an Irish bar than a local pub. The place advertises it's "traditional" fish n' chips ($14.95) outside and seems proud of them. They come in six small pieces over a healthy bed of well-made chips. I could not distinguish whether the fish "nuggets" were cod or haddock, but as usual it all tasted more like salt and vinegar after I fully lathered it up. City Island in general can feel a bit unwelcoming to visitors, but The Snug is a friendly place to have a couple pints and fill up. I was surprised at how friendly our service was, and would have loved to stay even longer. read more

Really cute local bar that's a notch above a dive bar. Definitely clean but has a friendly feel. You can order food from next door. I stayed here to watch the brutal US vs. Germany World Cup game. The crowd was not more than 15, but we bonded as local neighborhood folks do. It was a memorable time. read more

This Sunday night, lone bartender / manager was a young woman with 16-20 of her friends at a long table literally shrieking, screaming, standing , and playing heads up. Very friendly service at this local establishment. They even have a "Wisconsin Dog" on the menu! Had several drinks and the fried sweet clam strips, which were outstanding. The best Irish pub on City Island. I unfortunately got rained in once while hanging out in this neighborhood. The rain was just pouring buckets, I was driving and came across this great bar. So I pulled over, went in and drank myself silly. My friend, whose house I had left earlier in the day, came and met me. We drank some great beers and had a cool bartender. We were 2 of the 10 lushes that had come out in this dreadful summer storm. I never made it home (dont drink and drive) and left the next morning from my friend's house with an extreme hangover (-1 star), but at least it was sunny out. read more

During these last days of winter and since it's St. Patrick's Day Weekend, City Island Images decided to visit this local favorite. The Snug almost never gets really busy or crowded, but tonight was a special night. The music was superb and the drinks were always strong and reasonably priced, which is they way it should be! And like most Fridays a local musician plays and tonight, the most famous City Island recording artist owned this crowd, while providing excellent music and delightful entertainment. Pepe sang an eclectic mix of songs from Dean Martin to Credence Clearwater Revival favorites. The Snug has a fabulous atmosphere, good eats at reasonable prices. Although the bar has a few color monitors showing local sports, tonight all eyes and ears were focused on Pepe and his son, who were pleasing the crowd with American favorites. A good time was had by all. I love this place, because they never get really busy or crowded.. at least not during the winter months. I hear they have a great mardi gras weekend. Their drinks are always strong and cheap, which is they way it should be! And most Fridays a local musician, usually acoustic, plays up front providing nice covers from the early to mid 90's. read more

This is a super-friendly pub on City Island. The bartender was great, the fish and chips were VERY tasty, and the Guinness was decent. There were a lot of locals there and a bunch of the younger guys were really loud - arguing about Trump and Clinton through their 5th round. But, who isn't doing that these days? This place is very cute. It reminds me of a place my dad used to take me in Northern Kentucky called K n Ks. That place was very old fashioned diner style with the old timey waitresses (like flo and alice but more grannyish). The snug is not old fashioned, so let me clear that up - it just reminded me of the old good times with dad. Snug is a great name for this place. I had some chicken appetizers and some kind of irish coffee drink - then we slinked on up the road to a hole in the wall to commence our beer drinking. This is a cute and nice place, and I love to hear the folks talking in their accent - or is it ME who has the accent? I have had dinner and drinks here at the Snug many, many times and have always had a great experience, i was born and raised on City Island, but now live in New Jersey, i'll make the trip in just to meet up with family and friends. The food is above average, and they give you plenty of it, the drinks aren't too expensive. The bartenders and staff are always very friendly. This place is family-owned, and they treat you like family. It's true that a lot of locals go there, but that just adds to the character of this charming little gem. read more

Regular bar food nothing special, same goes for the drinks, sports on all channels so a gentleman's lair. Sometimes service is decent other times it seems as if everyone is hungover and not interested in making money. I mean it's a local bar everyone knows one another and the ambiance can be rather awkward if you are a new customer. We rolled into this place planning to have one round and we stay here for 5 hours because it was such a riot. Great Bartender, very nice owner and the best damn sandwich I've had in years. You must order the sliced pork with jalapeño cheese hoagie with gravy. Omg...yes, I was up all night long due to being totally stuffed but...this sandwich is a must. The soups were very good, a bowl was way too large though! Classic pub with outstanding food. Fish and chips, my favorite, was DA BOMB! Cole slaw were PERFECT, as was the tartar sauce. I had a Long Island Ice Tea and my husband had Sam Adams on tap. My husband had two appetizers - big and delicious chicken wings and chili, topped with cheese. Very relaxed atmosphere, owner, son and barmaid were lovely.
