The Soda Shop is one of those places that's about more than just the food. My kids absolutely love it, and it's become a regular stop for our family. You come here for the atmosphere, the history, the old-school soda shop feel, and of course the milkshakes. Is it the best food in town? No. The food is good, but that's not really why people keep coming back. It's the experience that makes this place special. I can only comment on the sodas as we didn't have food. I got the "phosphate" which is soda water with limeade flavoring. What i loved, when i asked how sweet it was she mentioned she could make it as sweet or not as I liked! That was great. My friend got root beer with watermelon flavoring and she enjoyed hers. Another reviewer said it was overpriced. $18 for breakfast for two with an egg cream and root beer float! Where are you getting your breakfast that this is spendy‽ Staff was super friendly, smiley even. They were very attentive and the food was served super hot! All while being packed. Ignore other reviews. My mother-in-law is visiting and said, "This is my favorite place so far." Good enough for that old southern woman, great for you. read more

We eat at the Soda Shop a few times a week. It's a local gem. From the homemade soups to the homemade milkshakes, it's been a wonderful experience. I also like the casualness of it all. At times they are packed with customers waiting for a seat in one of the vintage wooden booths, but the staff does a good job making sure folks can get a seat. Highly recommend! read more

The place is cute. A lot of history in the little shop. They even have photo albums on the counter that you can look through. When we stopped in, it was for some shakes. The reason for the 3 stars is for the service. The young woman at the counter when we were ordering looked and acted like she could not be bothered. She had one earbud in, so who knows what she was actually listening to. When we finally ordered, she wasn't even paying attention the whole time, so we had to repeat ourselves. read more

Wow... I am really surprised this place has a three star rating. It was exactly what I hoping it was. An old diner/soda shop for the 1950s and it delivered! It is super cute inside and they still have the eat at counter, which is a rare find these days. The waitress was tentative and made great suggestions for our meal. I had the Buffalo chicken sandwich and it was great! I could have used a bit more Buffalo sauce but I didn't ask. The sandwich was nice and toasted on a hoagie bun. The wife had a Ruben and it was delicious per her opinion as I don't get down with Ruben's. The fries were okay, we had the curly and cottage variety. Next time we will go with our daughter and get a milkshake! I am sure she will love it and we are excited to go back for another round. read more

Have loved this place for decades!! Adore the vintage vibe with the old wooden booths, checkerboard tile floor, and steel counter stools. Was passing through Davidson and decided to seek out a local spot to grab a hot dog. Yelp directed me to The Soda Shop so I directed myself there. It's a small place (and made smaller due to COVID restrictions) and I felt bad taking a booth to dine alone. So I tried to make my visit quick. The server was friendly (and masked). I ordered a hot dog with chili, mustard, and slaw and curly fries on the side. The dog was pretty well loaded with toppings and everything was tasty. I have small preferences: I'd prefer the bun be toasted and hot dog chili shouldn't have beans in it. The curly fries were crispy and well cooked. In and out for about $8. Happy about that. I came on a week night and it was pretty much empty. My buffalo chicken hoagie was yummy!!! Probably one of the only items I really enjoyed there. I will say the food is slightly overpriced (in my opinion) for what it is and its size. Also they were out of a lot of their sides (salt and vinegar chips, tater tots, etc.) which was disappointing, so I ended up settling on their regular fries (the round shaped things). Honestly, they were really bland and unseasoned. I decided to try a chocolate milkshake because I thought that it would be one of their "specialities" considering it's an old-timey diner type place. However, it was nothing special and just tasted like your regular blended chocolate ice cream. I packed the round fries to go and revamped them at home in the airfryer with lots of much needed seasonings. They turned into crispy potato chips and tasted much better than their original state. I recommend this! My friend got a burger, sweet potato fries, and a float as well. Overall pretty average / not great food place, but the look of the restaurants is cute. The fam and I came here strictly for dessert and were not disappointed! Street parking as well as a public parking lot behind the building are available. The soda shop is small, and is exactly what you would expect a soda shop to look like. There's booth, table, and bar seating. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. We decided to sit at the bar. The menu offers traditional soda shop items such as soups, salads, wraps, hamburgers, hoagies, hot dogs, sandwiches, old fashion milkshakes, floats, sundaes, and drinks. We ordered the following: Southern Comfort $5.99 Root Beer Float $3.75 The Southern Comfort is composed of layers of warm chocolate chip cookie, vanilla ice cream, walnuts, whipped cream, caramel syrup, and a cherry on top. Generous portion. I shared it with my husband and son, and we still couldn't finish it. The cookie was just warm enough to melt a little bit of the ice cream. It more than satisfied our sweet tooths. This place was awful. It's very kitschy but not in a good way, like someone picked out a bunch of random stuff from the ReStore and threw it on the walls. The food was bad, I had the Reuben. I took my first bite and the entirety of the rubbery corned beef came out of the sandwich. And then there was the brown mustard that permeated through what should have been the thousand island, it was unpleasantly unexpected. The fries were cold and the service was below mediocre, no one seemed very friendly. I had higher expectations for this place as it sits on the Main Street of Davidson. Oh well, there are other places to eat that aren't the soda shop. read more

Long way from my normal stomping ground. Found myself there while visiting my cousins this past weekend. Davidson campus is so nice. Nice day out, taking pictures and enjoying the nice weather can stir up an appetite. We made our way to the soda shop. It's nice, quaint little place. Very busy. The workers were hustling. The table got the chicken marinara hoagie (mine), buffalo chicken hoagie, and the chipotle hotdog, cherry coke, cherry coke float (mine), original soda (tasted). Man, the marinara hoagie was delicious. It didn't look like a whole lot of food but they pack the sandwiches with meat. Not a light serving which is great. The float was also pretty good. They don't hold back on the coke syrup at all over there. Watery your soda will not be. In addition, each of the plates came with their original (?) chip fries. It's a nice twist in French fries and really good. The service was alright. They were packed and busy, but they did their best and we didn't wait a whole lot. Overall a nice experience. Seating is a bit limited for the amount of traffic they seem to get. So, keep that in mind. All in all, definitely recommend swinging by if you are in the area. Prices are really fair. It is the only real soda shop I've ever been to snd it is dressed absolutely right for that role, They sell store made old fashioned sodas and phosphates which can morph into some old fashioned perfect deserts including real ice cream sodas. They make delightful milkshakes and offer a nice variety of lunch items. And they even serve alcohol do s breakfast Bloody Mary finished off an eggs Benedict. I just recently had a baby and have been cooped up at home. Me and my husband wanted to go out for dinner and found this place online. I was very excited to get out of the house with him and our baby. We got there 40 minutes before close and as soon as we opened the door and walked in all the staff standing near a TV turned to look at us and we heard them say "oh noo" as if we inconvenienced them by being there. Flip to the back of the menu and you'll find about every drink known to man and then some! "Then some" meaning stuff like Phosphates or the Pink Elephant or whatever it was. Stopped by here with a couple friends to close out the night with a quick drink and philosophical talk of the ages. Love the mood - that old diner feel. Considering this place has been around for like over 50 years, it's pretty easy to imagine guys with their slicked back hair twirling poodle-skirt clad ladies around in the twist to the humdrum of a jukebox. All the while a cute couple probably sucked down a phosphate with double straws smiling into each other's eyes...oop brain-freeze! Didn't have the time or appetite to partake in the food but I'll bet it's not bad. On the counter they had a lemon drizzle bundt cake "imported" from the Blue Ridges to the west. Made at high altitude with ingredients somehow native to the mountains I'm betting it's a rare find and a splendid indulgence. I'm sure to come back on another run-through in Davidson. I wish I could post a better review, but, for a small town restaurant which has a big competition right next door, looks like they just do not want to change the way they do business to attract more customers. The food is mediocre at best, served in disposable containers, fork and knifes. They will only accept cash, the portions for the price paid are very small and the service is really slow. The tables can barely fit an average size person, so that means if you are overweight, skip this place. The only thing I really like at this place is the ice cream and the shakes. If you are in just for that and have real CASH in hands, go for it! If you are here for brunch or other meal, go to Toast next door. It is worth the wait. read more
