been past here dozens of times and I never thought about stopping; the brick-to-glass ratio is all wrong because, well, you know... it's kannapolis. but today in the rain it called to me... better late than never I suppose. so I get in and have a look and there's tables to one side and a counter to the other with a menu board behind that listing a variety of burgers, sandwiches, and other morsels of good repute according to the kids at the counter. I asked about coffee and a fresh pot was set to brewing as I went back and forth between a dog and fries and a patty melt before deciding on the chicken sandwich special which basically comped the fries. meanwhile the coffee finished and I got topped off and found a seat. My sandwich arrived shortly looking about like I expected; topped with lettuce and tomato, add a smear of mayo and surround by a pile of fries that I am pretty sure started the day in the freezer but they did alright on my plate; hot and crispy and played well with the ketchup. kinda lingered over lunch, and got seconds on the coffee. left comfortably full but not bloaty and feeling good for skipping a sweet. there's hershey's ice cream if you want.

    Patty melt and fries.

Food was good. The fries were just okay, not very fresh, and the hush puppies were average. The patty melt was delicious. The service was excellent, however, the menu had much to choose from, and I really appreciated the fact that they were playing Christian music.

I tried this place out for the first time tonight. I was too distracted by the lack of COVID precautions to fully appreciate the fine points of what they have to offer. We entered and figured out that you order at the counter, take a seat, and then they deliver the food to the table. I ordered pork tips and two sides. My date ordered fillet of chicken sandwich with a side of fries. The counter space was limited. Customers were inches away from me on both sides. NONE of the workers behind the counter were wearing a mask. Many of the patrons weren't wearing a mask. Our food was delivered to the table by an unmasked employee. She also brought us refills. The place appeared clean. They have a 96.5 sanitation grade. The dining room was tidy. My pork tips were very flavorful. They were smothered in onions and peppers and served on a bed of white rice. I enjoyed it. The mashed potatoes were okay. The pintos were straight from a can. The portion size was large. The chicken sandwich was huge. It was good. The fries were very good. The price was fair.

Took 5 sips and the drink was gone. Wayyyyy too much ice. Good food tho. Would come back.

2nd degree abuse of a patty melt

They have several items here that have names like "The Humdinger" with no description. Thus, I had to ask the order taker to describe them for me. She was very patient and kind, but eventually just told me "you can't go wrong ". You order at the counter and they bring it to you, and I settled on the patty melt, a hotdog, and fries. Patty melt: This is the one menu item I actually did not ask her to describe, and when I got it, it was not served on rye bread--it was served on Texas toast. I know this is a practice some find acceptable. I am not such a person. I think you can be arrested in some parts of the country for preparing a patty melt on any bread other than rye. Certainly I think using any other bread makes it NOT a patty melt. At the very least, this should be explained ahead of time. There were not a lot of onions, the patties were pretty bland, and it was overall just a decent sandwich. Texas Pete to the rescue! Hot dogs: the wiener actually had a very good flavor, the slaw was decent but was a little wet, and the chili was very bland. The bun was lightly toasted, which along with the frank made the dog salvageable. Fries: average. Again, Texas Pete to the rescue! Nothing was bad at all, so I suppose the young lady was correct when she said, "you can't go wrong". But it just wasn't as right as I had hoped.

The place was clean and the seats were booth style with plenty of tummy room to slide in and be able to breathe comfortably. The food was AMAZING! The codfish sandwich coating was seasoned great but the fish itself could've used a lil razzle dazzle of salt and pepper but it was great! We ordered a veggie plate with Mac n cheese, which was good but not baked style which is my personal preference. The hush puppies were light with a nice crispy crunch exterior. The collard greens were OK, cooked down good but could've used a lil kick to them, again just a personal preference. The star of the show was the sweet potato yams! It had a marshmallow melted topping but they were seasoned perfectly! And since we went on a Monday they do offer daily specials, that day it was pot roast. Boy was that delicious! It was so tender it was falling apart while trying to pick it up. The gravy was spot on! It's a lunch/dinner spot but well with it. Definitely will return again.

DO NOT CONFUSE THIS PLACE WITH WHATABURGER... THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!!…read more We saw a review of this place on YouTube and decided to try it out because it's "sorta" on our way through NC. "Sorta..." means the exit is off 85 but the restaurant is 8.5 miles off the exit. That said, we would do it again. And that should tell you mostly what you need to know because it's not super convenient to get to, but it is worth it. It also says a lot that this place was PACKED! Founded in 1955 in Kannapolis, NC, I see some similarities to what the big chain Whataburger USED to be. Which got me thinking that someone copy-catted someone. I had to know so I looked it up and saw Whataburger was founded in 1950, five years before this business.... I can only assume the founders of this restaurant visited Texas, tried that famous burger restaurant and brought the idea back to NC with them. And I'm not mad about that because, where the "famous" Whataburger has dropped the ball and failed, What-A-Burger has continued to succeed when it comes to quality. As a matter of fact, if I closed my eyes and took a bite of the What-A-Cheeseburger.... It instantly reminds me of my childhood days in Texas. The bread was fresh, the lettuce crispy, the tomato juicy, the cheese not old or congealed and the patty was fresh, juicy and had that amazing true grilled taste. We also tried the hotdog. Coming standard with chili, slaw, onions, we added mustard. And while I loved the What-A-Cheeseburger a lot, I was surprised to find (because I don't generally care for hotdogs) that the hotdog was my favorite item. The chili had a great flavor. The slaw was creamy and crisp, the onions were also crisp, and again the bun was very fresh. The hotdog itself had good flavor and snap to it. We did have a few minor negatives. The fries had no seasoning on them and the onion rings were just okay. Not bad by any means but not stellar. Neither of these are a dealbreaker for us, though. I saw after ordering that they have curly fries so maybe next time we'll give those a try. The drink selection is definitely quirky but I like quirky. While they serve some Pepsi products, they do not sell Mountain Dew. Their Pepsi lineup is limited to Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and Starry. They also offer Patio Red Cherry (I don't know what that is) SunDrop, and Cheerwine; along with what they call, "The Witch Doctor." I got that and while I'm not sure what's all in it, I loved it! Definitely different and I'd get it again. Sweet and unsweetened tea are also offered. The staff were friendly and helpful and while waiting for our food, I struck up a conversation with an elderly man who said he's been coming here for as long as they've been here. Building is a bit dated, but I like that about it. It adds to the experience. They are both a drive in and a dine in place with the old carhop order stations, which again, I thought was pretty awesome. Overall, our experience here was great. This place has almost no social media presence, which while it makes finding an updated menu a challenge, I'd rather them keep putting the focus on their great food, rather than pandering to the masses. 8/10... would absolutely come back.

It is not much to look at, inside or out, but don't be fooled - you came for the food anyway. There are Dale Earnhardt Sr pictures, posters, statues, and other memorabilia in display cases and on the walls, everywhere. Don't know if Dale ever ate here (know that he had a favorite diner across town), but I'd bet he'd like the food and the people. We kept it simple - a Chopped BBQ Sandwich with slaw (not BBQ slaw), and a Chili Dog with mustard, chili, & onions. The Hot Dog was outstanding - a classic Southern style chili dog - nice meaty chili, decent wiener, fresh cut onions, soft bun - there aren't that many better than the dog here. The Chopped sandwich was also very, very good - typical of the barbecue in the Lexington/Salisbury corridor, but with a touch more smokiness than you usually encountered outside the Lexington city limits. For my taste, this barbecue is superior to that offered at better known BBQ joints in the area, like Gary's, Porky's, and Troutman's. This is pig prepared with care and pride. The service was excellent - friendly, and funny - like Flo and friends. We'll definitely be back.
