So I sometimes have this amazing dream where I'm in a huge thrift store of some sort and I'm…read morelooking at all these really cute clothes that cost 1 cent each...pure wish fulfillment. And entering Franklin Furniture felt like I was stepping into a variant of that dream. A sort of surreal atmosphere and an entire WAREHOUSE full of cheap, often vintage-y awesome furniture. Franklin Furniture closes down offices and then resells the furniture. So the prices are yard-saleish. And it's just so enormous. Lots to look at & probably something for everybody, especially if you've got some taste and can get into things looking retro and/or distinctly office-y (vs. home-y). And they have bookshelves, which are hard to come by used. I ended up with two vintage red vinyl desk chairs that look fabulous and this kind of great and very practical big table that looks distinctly like a kindergarten table (you know what I mean, right? Isn't that odd?). $75 total, and they even delivered for free to my house because I live nearby. The owner, Jim, is super nice and helped me a lot, since I was asking him about desk heights and things. (And this is when I accidentally showed up ten minutes before closing!) Really does feel like dreamy paradise if you covet awesome quirky stuff for your house but haven't any funds. I think there were more expensive things there, if I wanted them, but also plenty to choose from that was around $25-$35 per piece. & Jim can probably help you find the sort of stuff you're looking for. The big catch: it's pretty difficult to find. It moved from one Franklin ST location to another recently, to make room for that arts school that's being built. And the district it's in by the water is full of warehouses, in various states of abandonment. Hardly any signage. BUT, of the two addresses you find for it online it's the one closer to the Ren Cen. (The old address is further east.) If you're driving down Franklin west to east, from the Ren Cen, the store is on your right. And it's got a sign that points to a door, but for some reason it took me a second to figure out that it was really open, functioning, and right there. So... mapquest it, drive real slow, look for the sign, which just says something generic, I think--"customers enter here" or something. It's not a big sign with the store name. Okay, have at it!
