In my eyes the southern grille can do no wrong. Be it breakfast, lunch, or happy hour. I've had breakfast sandwiches, burgers, fish, quesadillas, sides and desserts and nothing has let me down. This is a hidden gem! Parking was tricky, but if you don't mind a short walk, you'll be fine. We were greeted when entering, and ordered at the counter/ bar. The menu is full of great choices. The restaurant is clean, and you can choose a table or a booth with outdoor seating available. Lots of TVs if you're into sports. There is a large aquarium with cool fish swimming around. I got the 4 vegetable plate. Okra, and tomatoes, red beans, pita, and hummus and a baked sweet potato. My husband had red beans and rice with spicy sausage. Great little spot to hit for breakfast. Appears to be a locals place, which I look for. Large indoor dining room and bar with outside covered and uncovered seating. Counter service was extremely friendly and the food was delivered table side very quick. I had the Canadian bacon eggs Benedict on biscuits with cheesey grits with a Tito's mild Bloody Mary. The food was very good. Biscuits flaky and tasty and Hollandaise was quite good. Grits required no additions and were the perfect portion. Came upon this place by reviews as we parked our boat at Friendship park. A short walk from the park. As we walked in we were promptly greeted and orders are taken at the counter. We had to take a minute because the menu was extensive. She recommended the BBQ and burgers since that's what she said they were famous for. Drinks are taken at the drink station with a soda fountain and sweet or unsweetened tea. They even have a coffee bar area on the opposite side. Food was delicious, my only critique was my fries were Luke warm on the verge of being cold. A lot of our group got the BBQ Pulled Pork Reuben Sandwich. She recommended getting it on garlic toast. I felt like a burger and got the Bacon Cheddar burger. We were all amazed how delicious the food was and mentioned coming back again. read more

Stopped in today at this small casual diner located just off the south bank. Parking to get in is a little tight. The menu for the business is expansive covering breakfast, sandwiches, melts, wraps, salads, and assorted special offerings like red beans and rice with choice of protein. You will order at the counter (there was a line when we got there at 11). Once you have ordered, you will be issued a number placard as then you can find a seat at the bar, a table or a booth. I opted for a club sandwich with fries, while my friends with me got red beans and rice with sausage and chicken tenders. Our food came out a short time later and my club sandwich on wheat was great. A good mix of piled high ham, turkey and cheese with bacon on top. Their wheat bread is really good and light. My friend who got the red beans and rice could not finish his meal bc there was so much. Very busy spot located in the heart of downtown. This place is an institution among professionals and locals alike. There are so many menu options to choose from. Breakfast is not served all day so come early for the cheese grits and bacon. Come for the food stay for the bar and hospitality. Parking is hit or miss. Orders are taken at the bar. We ordered, we sat and was fed almost instantly. My wife already is excited to return. The wife had the southern grill breakfast which includes eggs, grits, meat, home fries and toast. I got the veggie omelet with french fries and an english muffins. I had the veggie omelet. The omelet was small to the oodle of french fries on my plate. The omelet was tasty. Once you pay, the wait staff does not follow up. A sign says thank you for coming. This is the only down fall. Tried this spot this morning and the overall experience was just okay. I ordered the pancake breakfast combo. The eggs and bacon were cooked great, no complaints there. Unfortunately, one of my pancakes wasn't cooked all the way through and the inside was still raw. When I was done eating around the raw parts, I realized the second pancake had a piece of long hair cooked into the batter. I let the waitress know and she offered a free dessert, which I appreciated. That being said, the food was very mediocre, you could eat at any main chain restaurant and probably pay less. As far as ambiance goes, seems like a sports bar setting on the inside, which I had no problem with. read more

This is a little local bar/restaurant. Order at the counter. Mediterranean it really isn't. Yes they have gyros but it was like a package deal. Not like it is from a vertical spit. I had the gyro. It was ok. My friend had the sliced smoked turkey and it was dry. Passable but not the best. Definitely a local spot. It was busy. But probably won't be back. Very disappointed with this place. I was so excited to have a nice burger and fries and the taste just wasn't there. It was ok but kinda dry and I didn't like how the burger was "seasoned". Not sure what they put on it but it didn't have any kind of flavor. I did put ketchup on it but that didn't even help. The fries were good but that's about it. Crinkle fries are my favorite tho so..... One thing that really made me upset tho, I paid for the food and realized that they didn't give me the discount they have if you stay at a nearby hotel. So they told me they refunded that amount then ran my card again for the correct amount. Said it would be off my card in 24 hours. Didn't happen. I wasn't refunded at all and instead was charged twice for the same food. Thankfully I have an amazing bank so I called and they took the incorrect charge off my account. What a great place and so close to the hospital!! The staff were amazing, cheerful and extremely helpful with finding lunch options on their large menu! We ordered at the front and food was deliver to our table. There is a drink station so you gab that and refills for yourself. I ordered the pulled pork platter and my stewed tomatoes and okra as well as the collards were delicious!! They have several sauce options too. I had to take a doggie bag home there was so much food! My friends also liked their meals. One had the chicken salad on pita bread and the other had the chicken tender basket with fries. There is plenty of seating inside and out and lots of parking options. I will be near the hospital again this week and already told my husband I would bring him to The Southern Grill! read more

I have lived here for 50 years and never known this place has been here half of that time or more. Took a friend from Oklahoma there I had the vegetable platter. She had the ribs, outstanding okra, tomatoes, green beans, hummus, and her sweet potato with cinnamon and butter looked awesome. The food came out fast. The place reminds me of a bar and Grill by the time we left at 12:15 it was crowded. Very crowded. Parking is a little bit of a nuisance, but we did not mind walking a block. I ordered the turkey BBQ platter with those house made sides. black eyed peas and Cole slaw. Yezzz that cole slaw came out COLD and fresh and it's in my dreams now. The black eyed peas were good too.
