We've given harps many chances because we SO want to love it. We live right down the road and it's a nice walk over in the evening. I think the positives start and stop with it being a laid back, local place with a nice outdoor seating area. The burgers and wings are also pretty good. However, I do not have a lot of positives after that. We've been there probably 10+ times and each time we have the same experiences. The food is extremely average it all tastes like typical bar food that was frozen at one point. For a neighborhood dive my expectations are not high. And the food here is seriously lacking. The fries/onion rings/mozz sticks are terrible. I'm not sure how they mess them up so bad... the ones served at my schools cafeteria are far better. My biggest issue with harps is the service. They are rude, not prompt, and seemingly overworked. If you sit outside prepare to be bulldozed by servers rushing through you. I was walking to my table last night and a server knocked me off the concrete and into the landscaping never apologized and never said excuse me. She just walked right through me and expected that I move out of her way. This isn't the first time this has happened here. Make the servers sections smaller so they are not running around like chickens. Don't come to the table out of breath. read more

Shame on me for not having any pictures whenever we visit Harps. I don't usually go in to Dive bars but this is my only exception and the service and food is the reason why for that. Before the big renovation on the road the parking here can be tricky especially if its a busy night but ever since they had the road renovated they added few more parking on the side of the Harps. I do believe that Harps is a staple for the Avondale, Riverside and Ortega neighborhood. When people comes here everyone knows everyone which is that's why you feel at home. Service here is always amazing! The servers here are so good and we never waited for our food for a long time. Food: we ordered from spinach and dip to burgers , nachos and their caramel cheesecake but my favorite is the blackened fish! OH MY GOODNESS!! i can eat that everyday! very well seasoned and hot whenever I order it and the sauce that comes with it is just the icing on the cake, I am not sure what is the ingredients for that sauce all I know is they put soy sauce in there and it its the bomb! We never have any complaints on our food here it's always on point. Harps have a decent size for the place, they have an outdoor seating area. If you haven't tried this amazing place this is the sign for you to go and order the blackened fish for me! read more

Looking for a good burger, Harps is your place. Pulled up on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and happily surprised by the amount of parking! Nice big restaurant with outdoor patio dining. Bar is a nice size, accommodating several people to belly up. The pool table is in the back dining area for all to play, tv's all around, and a wonderful atmosphere overlooking Fishwier Creek. I ordered the burger with fries, and he got the chicken salad salad with fried pickles for an appetizer. The pickles are delicious and enough for a group! My burger was cooked perfectly with just the perfect amount of juice trickeling out after your first bite. The fries were nice and crisp, which I love. The salad was just that. Nice size with chunks of chicken salad. We left happy and can't wait for better weather so we can enjoy the patio! read more

I've never been treated so poorly by staff. I like to support local restaurants but the staff make it impossible.

So disappointed!!! We have been coming here for over 2 years for their Thursday 1/2 off burgers.. ALWAYS EXCELLENT!!! I'm hoping tonight was just a fluke!! I'm only writing this in hopes that they did NOT PURPOSELY MAKE THE BURGERS SMALLER OR COMPROMISE THE QUALITY DUE TO THE SPECIAL. We ordered our burgers medium rare, both came out well done. I never send anything back but the burger was WELL DONE!!! And I mean well!!! Sent it back to only get another one more well done then the first!!! So maybe a new guy... We will keep coming back and support local business but hoping they never skimp on quality. read more

This is a cool place that we were a little weary about due to the more "country" crowd around it, but we sat outside next to the river and they had the blues playing and when the food came out we were in awe. The price to flavor ratio is insane making us feel like we were misreading the prices. This is an example of cheap doesn't mean bad. We had the best salsa and chips ever and following that our entrees were perfect. We loved looking at the water and bridge, and our waitress was super funny and helpful. Melody, if I could give a zero star review I would have done so already. Since you are unable to read, allow me to rewrite the short paragraph that states as follows: "I can forgive the cole slaw on the burger since it was written on the menu, and I had not noticed, but there is no excuse for the burger to have arrived with cold pulled pork and an overcooked patty." If you are getting stuck on the "inexperienced children" part of the review, then you need to reevaluate yourself and this business because I clearly state the criticism of the food and acknowledge my mistake in ordering this disappointment, of which took a whole hour to arrive to our table. The cole slaw by itself was gross and old. If you combine that with cold pulled pork and an overcooked patty, please explain how it is supposed to taste good? It wont, and the fact that my neighboring tables were complaining out loud about the exact same things confirmed that it is not an anomalous experience. We left with nothing but beer and disappointment in our stomachs, and went straight to Wendy's because at the very least the folks working at Wendy's can put together a proper burger. Never in my life have I done this before until I went to Harp's, and I can only feel sorry for the wait staff working there as they have to put up with this crap. This standard of food quality is horrible, and it is incredibly laughable that our table was not the only one to experience this travesty on August 6th, 2021. read more

Great patio, lots of beer and plenty of good bar food. They have a couple vegan options too. The best part really is the patio seating and view on great Florida day!! Let me start with the fact that the menu was diverse enough that I had three completely different options that sounded good to me (wings, French dip, and fried shrimp). I ended up going with the fried shrimp and have to say that the shrimp itself was cooked very well and tasted great (I was happy with the choice). The fries that came with it were fantastic. The coleslaw however was a major disappointment. I kept wanting to like it (I'm a huge fan of a good slaw) and it just didn't deliver. Quick, friendly service, great neighborhood vibe. Outdoor patio tables have umbrellas and a view of the creek. There is also an outdoor covered dining area in the front of the restaurant. The blackened fish sandwich is consistently outstanding. Good beer selection with several local brews on tap. The only thing I've encountered that's off putting is they don't seem to mind people smoking at the outdoor tables (which adversely affects my appetite). I ordered the buffalo chicken panini without cheese, and it was amazing. The mozzarella sticks were great too! I LOVE their homemade ranch. The waitress was so kind & even when my panini was made with a small error, she did everything she could to try and make up for it after they remade it. So il start by saying the ambiance was cool, it's definitely chill and laid back, with cool pictures on the walls. For food we started with fried pickles which were good they were pickle chips which I prefer to spears, but that's where it kinda went downhill with the food when I ordered I tried to order a side of fries and a side of onion rings and was told I could only order appetizer portions which I find super odd since it says you can order a side on the menu. we were a party of 4+2 kids and my boyfriend and I got wings and his didn't seem like they'd just been cooked and mine were cold, room temp at best, I sent them back after I took a bite and my server did bring them back out pretty quickly which I was thankful for. On the board it states buy one get one beers (certain beers only) and then after ordering and getting checks we were informed it was left up from the night prior, which was kinda crappy. Also for some reason the the fried pickles didn't ring up for happy hour even though we ordered before happy hour ended but the server did fix that. This is my 'go to' place for wings! It's right around the corner from me so I can even ride my bike!! You wouldn't know it from looking at it (it's definitely a place the locals know about and it does have the vibe of a dive, which I like!) but the food is GOOD and the prices are very reasonable. The servers are very friendly (unless you aren't - lol) and they feel like they are your sisters, neighbors, etc. That is, they make you feel at home! There's a patio for outdoor dining, they host local musicians and they have a very popular trivia night. It's also a great place to watch your favorite teams play as they have multiple screens........This is a neighborhood hangout that I hope we get to enjoy for many years to come!! And, yes, there's usually plenty of parking, even if the lots across the street need to be utilized! I've given Harp's a four rating because I often have to ask for the tables to be cleaned off and sometimes the bathrooms need attention. Haven't been in this place for 20 yrs when it was still called harpoon Louie's. Craving a burger so we stopped in for lunch today. Had some shock top Belgians with oranges. So nice and citrusy. Ordered the backyard with pepper jack medium rare. Perfectly cooked inside and out including a nice crust on outside. Also had the cheese steak sandwich. It was good but less successful. Filling wasn't enough for bun ratio. However where there was enough it was quite tasty. Indoor and outdoor seating. Basically a neighborhood bar with better food. So we ended up here due to it's proximity to Eclipse night club. We were going to see a show and really needed to get some food before we went in and were like "hey what about that place!" So we walked over and decided to stay. We started off with fried pickles. I really love fried pickles and appreciated the fact that they made their own right there and didn't just buy them premade and frozen. You could really taste the difference. We both had the only cider they had there. It was an apple cider and it was pretty good. Not too sweet and not too sour. I wish they had a larger selection of hard ciders as neither my husband or I are really into beer. We split a buffalo chicken panini and that too was really good. My only complaint was that I would have liked to have some tomato and pickle or some type of accoutrement but my husband really appreciate the lack of "rabbit food" on his sandwich. It was quite tasty but needed a bit more chicken. I had a few bites that were just bread and cheese. If you are going here, you have to try to pasta salad. The fella who makes it apparently has been making it the same way for a long time and no wonder! This was the best pasta salad I have ever tasted! When I ordered it, I was expecting the typical italian dressing based salad but that was not like that at all! It is rich and creamy and I could eat a bucket of it I swear! One last note, our server was named Trey and he was great! Very happy to recommend items on the menu and take the time to make our visit pleasant. We came here to kick off my boyfriend's birthday month instead of our usual Brick or Perfect Rack dinner gig. The food was OK. Not terrible, but really just OK. Somehow the burger just didn't do it for us. Perhaps it was the burger and definitely the bun. If you do not enjoy a toasted bun on the outside, you probably won't enjoy this one. Pasta salad was simple and good. We had also ordered the sampler appetizer (all fried, but the sauces were yummy) and the chicken special with a white sauce. The PLUS SIDE, the service is impeccable when we went, we enjoyed all of the sauces they offered, the outside patio area where one can smoke, have a cold pitcher of beer and enjoy the weather is a treat, the one man band that afternoon was really, really good (sang some great songs & had a super nice voice) and a very laid-back atmosphere add to our experience. It just didn't seem like the food was made with a whole lot of love and was apparent for our first time here. That sucks. However, since it is within our neighborhood--we will probably give this place another try as the weather becomes cooler...I mean, everyone deserves a second chance, right? read more

This place has been a staple in Jax forever. The first time I ever stepped foot inside here was over 20 years ago when I was in middle school! (Ah! Showing my age!) I LOVE the newly revamped menu. I prefer places that just have one page front and back. Simple and easy to make a decision. I love that they also have a huge beer selection on tap. Everything my family and I ordered was great. But the highlights of the meal were the Veggie Burger and the Pulled Pork Sandwich. They make the sauces (we got ours on the side) in house and they were fabulous. We could not stop sharing the BBQ sauce that came with the pork (my niece is so sweet.) But def looking forward to going back and trying out some of the frankfurter and taco options. Those looked really yummy. Oh and we also ordered the crab bisque and it was great! Now, I want to take a second to discuss the chicken salad wrap and the side of pasta salad (which, I have to say, my twin sister always gets.) This is something that HAS NOT changed since I can remember. I feel these have not changed because they are trying to appeal to and older crowd who has been coming here since day one. Yes they are kind of plain, and the pasta salad is just pasta and mayo, but I'm sure "the crowd" appreciates it staying the same when so much else has changed. And changed for the better! Harps is one of my favorite spots in Jax! Great consistent food, and the servers all go out of their way to be friendly and to make sure we're taken care of! Harps is a neighborhood staple in Avondale and a solid choice to go out to eat at! (I would definitely recommend the buffalo chicken panini!!) David and Mel run a great place, and the staff their always goes above and beyond to treat you like family. The food is good and service was good but unfortunately they nickeEd and dimed everything. The waitress said the fish came fried grilled and blackened. We chose blackened. I was charged almost a dollar to get it blackened we asked for cocktail and horseradish sauce and got charged a $1.00 then charged a percentage because we didn't pay with cash COME ON!! when I asked our waitress about it she got a little flipped and said our menu tells you blackened is extra! Okay but it's also your job to mention we charge a little extra for that. Just beware Harps used to be my favorite place to go but you can nickel and dime yourself right out of business. Easy going seat yourself at the time we arrived, and we went straight for the patio overlooking the water. Our server, Amy, was a delight.
