My gf and I booked 50 minute massages ($465 if I recall with tip included) and added on the day pass to use the pool for $95 (we didn't bother using the steam room or sauna since it was like 82 degrees outside). My massage by Liz was amazing. She is who you want to book for deep tissue. Sadly, she cut the massage short by like 5-6 minutes so that was a bummer since the massage price also includes the 23% tip! That can be negotiated at request but I chose not to, just sucks that I was in the locker room before the 50 minutes was even up with still time to go. The pool was glorious and clean. I recommend getting there early to grab a comfy chair by the pool. They offer a food and beverage menu at the pool with pool service and delivery service but it's a whopping $9.00 on top of your food/drink to be delivered. I opted for both pool service and walking to the restaurant myself to make an order since it's just a few minute walk away on site. There were a couple of kids there towards the end but it was really nice not having them for the entirety as it's definitely more of an adult crowd who wants to relax vs bring your whole family to the pool- at least the day I went. I would go again for the day pass but would probably pass on the massage just because it's soo pricy. read more

Bad part - the next day, I had a facial that included a wonderful foot massage and a relaxing scalp massage with oil. I enjoyed it so much that I booked the same facial and massage for my mom. Unfortunately, she didn't receive the same treatments--no foot massage or scalp treatment--which was really disappointing. This WAS a place that was one cut above the rest in the area. We came here several times per year until Covid. This is our first time back today. It's my birthday and my husband booked me an 80 min facial and an 80 massage for himself. This has gone down the "shrinkflation" slide. This is a SPA, they call themselves a spa, it's situated in a very high end lodge with an acclaimed restaurant. However, massage envy in a strip mall and this experience had a lot of things in common. It's a true (or rather was) special experience destination. Ok we check in and keep in mind these treatments are at the top of the pricing scale, we are told that if we want to have a robe, slippers, locker to keep our things and the opportunity to soak in the warming pool or use the sauna or steam, we had to pay an additional $100 PER PERSON! To add insult to injury, the night before we received an email saying "Don't come more than 15 mins early to your appointment" When I'm forking out $400++ for a facial, I shouldn't have to go into a treatment Room fully clothed with the esthetician and take off my clothes in the room hurriedly because the clock starts ticking the second the therapist comes to get you. So 10 mins is immediately stolen from the treatment! So so disappointing! Probably the worst part was sitting in the relaxation lounge waiting for the therapists in our street clothes. A little Embarrassing and so NOT A SPA! There are a lot of choices in the Carmel, Carmel Valley area that takes the relaxation and pampering more seriously keeping to the spa experience. So if you're thinking about Bernardus, don't! Unless you're a hotel guest, don't put yourself through the pedestrian experience. read more

I was visiting a friend who lives in the area and we decided to do a girls spa day at nearby Bernardus. I booked a 50 min Lomi Lomi massage and my friend had a facial treatment scheduled. We arrived a couple of hours early to use the private relaxation pool, which was warm and serene. It was lovely to lounge for a bit and chat while we waited. I also liked that their complimentary snacks in the spa lounge consisted of a wide variety of dried fruit, nuts, seeds and chocolates so that you could mix and match to make your own trail mix based on your personal preferences. My massage itself was not a style I would book again but it was very good nonetheless. I appreciated the therapists technique, the lovely scented lotion, and the intention behind the massage itself (a more invigorating style, in my opinion).. plus I'm happy I was able to try something new... I think I just prefer a more relaxing treatment. The property itself is beautiful and I would love to spend more time here on my next visit just to have lunch, people watch and enjoy the atmosphere. The spa and the grounds here are lovely. My comments here pertain to the exhorbitant fees they charge to receive your service. Most spas give you access to their spa which is included with a service you book. Here, for example, a 50 minute facial or massage is $180 PLUS a $95 charge just to actually use the spa amenities (locker room, robe, warming pool, steam room, etc.) . A 22% gratuity then gets added, which I get, although the industry standard is 20%. Spa goers, if you are in the area then I highly recommend going to the Spa at Pebble Beach instead. Spa use is included with your treatment and the spa itself is exceptional. I love Bernardus, but I am so disappointed in the extra day use charge which is so unnecessary. What a disappointment. Please note the good reviews are over a year old if you're looking at the stars scale. For reference I'm a local and have had many facials at local spas. When you book a facial or massage, you have access to the showers, pool, robes, sauna for as long as you are there. Apparently your $300+ overpriced facial does not qualify you here. My husband booked me a 80 min vitamin C facial and himself a 80 min Swedish massage. They told us we had to pay an additional $100 per person to get a robe and shower. What the what? That should be standard at a high end facility. My esthetician told me I'd be getting a double cleansing, exfoliation, and a shoulder and foot massage. After I got on the bed there were no questions asked about my skincare concerns. No letting me know what she was doing or what products were used. Complete silence. At one point I noticed she wasn't exfoliating the area above my lip at all and that is my most area of concern with wrinkles and melasma from pregnancy so I asked her if she recommends not scrubbing there and she said "oh I'm scrubbing there." Then proceeded to not barely reach past the sides of my upper lips. That was the extent of our conversation. When I got out I asked my husband how his massage was. He said it was the worst. She sat in a chair the whole time and moved it around the massage table while massaging. We decided at that moment we won't be back. We made our way to checkout and there was a list of products my esthetician used and recommended. I asked how she'd make recommendations when she didn't ask my concerns about my skin. She said "oh you booked the vitamin c facial that comes with standard products. There's another one you can do if you want customization." We get the bill and the tip was already included. Good thing bc she wouldn't have gotten one otherwise and I consider myself a generous tipper. The worst service and the worst policy's. You get better service at a strip mall. Go to the spa at Portola plaza, Pebble beach, or Monterey Plaza hotel if you want to spend the kind of money to get the kind of service you expect at that price. Never again for Bernardus spa. This place was recommended by our hotel concierge as we were desperately looking for a good spa in the area, it certainly didn't disappoint! 5 star service - The main entrance of the lodge was under construction and I couldn't find the way in, front desk staff stayed on the phone with me till I found the alternative entrance. Once checked in I was led to the locker room immediately, a spa concierge gave me a tour and patiently explained how everything works. 5 star facility - Locker room, relaxation lounge, outdoor heated pool, refreshments, books and magazines, all will make sure you have a great time there. 5 star masseuse - I got a deep tissue massage, sooo good!! This review is for Adrian (masseuse) at the Spa. He was amazing. Best massage I've had in quite some time and I get a lot of body work done as I have a bad back. He had great hands, was very intuitive his approach, and really took the time to work on certain spots that I needed more than others. I would recommended him highly and wish I could go back again for another one tomorrow! Unfortunately my husband did not have the same experience with his masseuse. He said he was very tentative and almost felt like he was not confident in what he was doing, which of course did not result in a great experience. My husband also didn't get the same service as me upon arrival - he had no robe or slippers in his locker and no one showed him how to use it. It was my boyfriend's birthday and after being together for nearly 5 years, gift ideas start to run dry. Just when I thought I was SOL on the perfect gift, we decided to hoof it to Carmel for the weekend. We got a room at Bernardus Lodge while I made reservations at Marinus and at the Bernardus Spa as a surprise. I booked a couple's massage for us and a "Gentleman's Facial" for him to follow. The massage was (insert adjective for good/awesome/great). My massuse conferred with me beforehand about the type of pressure I wanted (I chose medium to firm, though really, a massage isn't a massage unless you're wincing in pain) and to my relief, he kept his word for the rest of the hour. Nothing is more annoying than a massage that feels like a child's fingers kneading PlayDoh. Bleh. If at all a caveat, the background music was definitely creeping into Kenny G. territory. I would've asked for something different, but: a) I didn't want to be a difficult biatch, b) I'm there to get a massage, not to make babies. The price of the facial ran a bit higher than I would have liked ($135 seems to be the standard for most of their facial services), but the bf came out happy as a clam with clear pores to boot. Is there a price on clear pores? No, no there isn't. He admitted being wary when the facialist pulled out her extraction tools, but he took it like a champ and really enjoyed the whole thing. Be warned that they (both the facialist and the attendant at the register) did try to push the products used during the facial. All hotel guests are invited to use the spa facilities, free of charge. That said, take FULL advantage of the eucalyptus steam room. Is this what it feels like to be inside a koala bear, all warm and menthol-y? I'm not sure, but I can confirm that you enter a sore, haggared being and emerge as a brand new (wo)man. Get there in the earlier AM hours (10AM-noon, the place was empty) and bask in the glory of your own nudity. Fruit infused water, a selection of hot teas, fresh fruit (I ate about 5 tangerines), and a mix of almonds and berries are yours for the noshing at the spa's waiting area. And if you brought your swimthings, go outside and soak yourself in the warming pool. The facilities are clean-- towels are constantly replenished, counters wiped clean, not a thing out of place. No eyesores, nothing sketchy. If money still ain't a thang in a year, I'll be back. read more

This review is only for the spa at Bernardus Lodge. We stayed here this past labor day for our babymoon and being 32 weeks pregnant I decided to treat myself to a 50 min Mommy to be massage. Michelle was my massage therapist. While she was all smiles and friendly, the whole experience was very rushed. For $240, the experience was not as good I had hoped it to be. The scalp massage lasted about 10 seconds, there was no relieving pressure from fingers or toes or palm/feet. The foot scrub/leg oil addon they offered for $50 was not worth it. She scrubbed my foot for maybe 3 mins and it was almost as if she was forced to do the massage. I have had a 30 min massage (both prenatal and non) here in downtown Los Gatos by Audra at Timeless and I have to say although that seems short for a massage, I've left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. First, the spa is well-appointed with a locker room equipped with everything you might need. The "warming room" is where I waited for Jamie, my masseur, to pick me up. The waiting room has fruited water, fresh fruit, nuts and organic tea while you wait. You may also take a dip in the hot pool just outside the warming room before or after your treatment. Jamie proceeded to give me the best massage! 14 years at Bernardus and I'm sure she's not going anywhere anytime soon. Just go. This is the best day spa I have been to in California. I went midweek and felt like I had the whole place to myself. The spa attendant was friendly and helpful when I realized I forgot my swimsuit. She assisted me in picking out another from their spa boutique. There is a cozy relaxation lounge with plush chaises, warm blankets and a wood burning fireplace. They offered an assortment of teas, waters, and fresh fruit. I spent my time outside at the private warming plunge pool. While it was in the mid 70s, the warm water was soothing. The outdoor chaises are covered with thick cushions for the ultimate in comfort. My massage therapist, Michael, listened to my "ailments" and quickly went to work. He concentrated on the tension in my middle back but did not ignore the rest of my body. By the end, I felt like the jello and all my pre-wedding stress had melted away. This would be a great destination for a girls' weekend-relaxing, luxurious, and upscale without attitude. read more

While on a weekend get-away at Bernardus, I scheduled my boyfriend and I for a couple's massage. We were told to arrive early, and I'm glad we did, as it was great to take a dip in the outdoor warming pool (bring your bathing suit!), sip some tea and relax by the awesome fireplace in the provided robes before our treatment started. We also made use of the lounge area after our massage, and it was really nice to sit in silence and allow the relaxation to truly soak in before we left. The bathrooms were equipped with every amenity you could think of, which is always a nice touch. As I was feeling a bit stuffed up from allergies, I appreciated the eucalyptus steam room, as it really helped to clear out my sinuses! As to the actual massage, I think I've learned my lesson with booking us in the same room. I'd been told before by a masseuse, and now I believe her, that massages are better if you're in your own rooms. While both of us had a good experience, neither of our massages blew us away. The fifty minutes seemed to go by really fast, which was exacerbated by the seemingly rushed style my masseuse had. I did appreciate him checking in with me about pressure, and asking my preference of oil or lotion, but I wish he had slowed down! Also, while I love the electric blanket under the sheet, it was too warm and had he asked about temperature I would have asked to have it turned down. Overall, a nice experience, but a bit pricey in our opinion. Worth the splurge if you're in the area and feel like spending money, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

There are so many reasons you must book a room at this luxurious hotel when visiting the Monterey/Carmel region. Our room (#4-Garden Room) was beautiful. The spacious bathroom features heated marble floors, double sinks, a large Americh bathtub with bath salts, separate shower, toilet room. 3. Gas fireplace and a comfy couch. 4. Refrigerator stocked with beer, waters, and a bottle of wine, all complimentary. 5. Nespresso maker on the bar. 6. Comfortable King size bed. 7. French doors opening to a garden patio with table, chairs, and lounge. 8. A beautiful pool open 24 hours with an adjoining hot tub. 9. Complimentary yoga classes and nature hikes on weekends. 10. Bocce ball and croquet on the lawns. 11. Firepits, fountains, and lovely gardens throughout the property. 12. An excellent restaurant, Lucia. 13. Locating in Carmel Valley boasting warm weather, 22 wineries. Upon arrival, after being valet parked, we were welcomed with a refreshing glass of Bernardus Sauvignon Blanc. The room was stunning yet comfortable overlooking the gardens and wedding altar. (That was one of the drawbacks. Three weddings transpired about 20 feet from our patio during our stay. We moved from our patio to the indoors as to not impose on the vows.) The biggest perk of our entire stay was the opportunity to use the Mercedes convertible to enjoy the region. What a joy ride and so thrilling. The restaurant, Lucia, is excellent and the spa is fabulous with a steam room, sauna, and warm meditation pool. Massage therapist Rita was excellent, shout outs to Yoga instructor, Greg, hiking guide, Tricia, and staff member, Alexandra, and all of the valet staff for their superb service. I recently treated my mom to a spa day for her birthday. As a local I've been to a handful of the spas in Monterey/Carmel but this was my first time at Bernardus. The price of a massage is on the high end but I thought it would be worth it to get the Bernardus experience. While booking the massages we were notified of a $95 fee per person to get a "day pass" which we were told grants you access to the pool and sauna. This took me by surprise as all high end spas I've been to (Pebble beach, Monterey plaza, ritz Carlton, etc.) have never added this price. We passed on purchasing day passes even though we had been looking forward to using the amenities. When we showed up for the massage appointments we were informed that without the day pass we also didn't have access to the lockers, robes, & showers. I'm sorry but that's insane. We literally were not given robes and had to change in the actual massage room. I had to ask my masseuse to do light lotion as I wouldn't be able to shower any of the oils off. The massage itself was mediocre. When paying I was charged an extra $15 for a Deep tissue massage which I never asked for. I had told my masseuse a focus area of mine (which they always ask about) and he made the decision to provide deeper strength. It seems like they are trying to nickel and dime at every point here, especially for local guests, and it's just tacky. Would not recommend. read more

The Spa at Bernardus is very nice, and the staff is wonderful. I particularly recommend spending some time in the outdoor warm soaking pool, both before and after a massage. The massages themselves have been consistently good over the years, although not 5-stars. They do however provide some thoughtful extras, like heated tables and warm washcloths on your feet when they finish up. My wife and I really enjoyed our time at the spa. We both had aromatherapy massages by Michelle. The massage lasted fifty minutes. Michelle did a great job. I recommend combining scented oils to create a custom massage. We both combined mint and orange. We both felt refreshed after the rub. The facility is nice,quiet and very cozy. The back warming pool was just the right temperature. The locker room was clean and had excellent steam and sauna facilities. The exercise room is small. You need to get in by 730 to get a machine when the lodge is busy. We are looking forward to our next visit. read more

My mom and I just spent the most wonderful day at the Bernardus Spa this weekend. We were merely trying to beat the heat and find a peaceful escape during the long weekend. The Spa was just the ticket! I booked a massage, facial & stay all day pass for each of us and we were told we could checked in early. We primarily spent time in and around the pools, it was just too hot for the sauna and steam room. There's a bar next to the large resort pool where we ordered lunch and delicious margaritas. The smaller, warm pool behind the spa was an oasis - it was truly the escape we needed. To top it off - the strawberry facial was one of the best I have ever received and I am no stranger to a professional and relaxing facial. My mom thoroughly enjoyed her 2020 recovery massage - she couldn't say enough about the CBD and warm stones. Overall, we had a lovely mother/daughter day and we can't wait for our next excuse to retreat to The Spa. read more

When we checked in at the hotel the staff asked if we would like to arrange a spa treatment and we said sure we would like a couples massage preferably today. None was available same day they had the spa contact us for the next day. Brandon called us but was horribly unclear but finally had a plan for massages and facial. He asked if we preferred female or male therapists and we said female. But he responded they had only males which was odd given that he just asked our choice. He was so clueless and we were so frustrated we said never mind. I decided to talk to a manager, Allison, to express our frustration and even she was confused but eventually offered to see if she could call in some therapists. I said great...we wanted couples massage with female therapists and IF she could strangle that then my wife would do a facial. Well Brandon called us (apparently Allison was gone)... he had a massage for my and a facial for my wife....WRONG. We said no that is not what we asked and said cancel everything. I planned a nice day for my wife but they ruined it. At the end they added a 20% tip to the bill. Nowhere in the spa pricing does it tell you this. I had a god massage, nothing spectacular. They tried to sell me add-ones like hot stones and things. If you want deep pressure it costs more. The locker room was rather small and the lockers are half-size. I could not hang anything up and had to jam all my clothes in a bag to make it fit. At one point I found an employee opening all the lockers and looking inside. Mine was unlocked so I watched. I booked in for facial at Bernardus Spa for the eco facial. Facilities are small, intimate and very beautiful - lovely candles, furnishings and fireplace in the common areas deliver a relaxed, casual but elegant ambiance. Stepping out to the pool area and looking up to the beautiful mountains of Carmel Valley took my breath away! Staff is very friendly and attentive, and my facialist Julia was knowledgeable and skilled. Only gripe is that I felt like she was agressively pushing the skincare line they were using (even though I had told her I was using a new line of skincare and was happy with it). When I went to the reception area to pay, I was surprised to be handed a bag of the products that I could purchase - which made for an awkward moment given that I had shown no interest in purchasing any of the products...I just wanted a facial! So, I left there with a bad taste in my mouth since my intent in visiting the Spa was to be treated to a facial, not to be hawked the line of skincare products. read more

For our 11th wedding anniversary my honey booked us a massage and we stayed for a light dinner at Wickets! We went for the afternoon and sat around the fire in our robes and sipped tea and ate almonds. My husband arrived a little later than I did..he arrived with flowers and a nice card...since we have twin four year olds..this was an awesome afternoon for me...just the few hours of quiet and not to mention the massage was perfect..perhaps the best that I have had and it was much needed..it was the perfect mini-vacation and we plan to do it more often! Thes spa itself is beautiful. Amazing snacks and treats for all guests. Beautifully decorated and relaxing. But my friend and myself definitely were very disappointed with the massage and facial. First off, I was offered an extra service which was a mini facial. Well it was a 5 minute service for 25$ but it took away from my massage time and I entered and excited the room before my 50 mi utes was up. I normally wouldn't mind if at least I felt like I had been massaged. I normally walk out of a massage feeling very relaxed. I told my masseuse that I like to have my hands feet and head massage, she never once touched my head and I felt like it just abruptly ended and I was surprised that it was already done. I thought maybe it was just my masseuse, when my friend exited from her facials she said it did not feel like a real facial which she gets done almost every two months. I am still daydreaming about this spa. The architecture and amenities at Bernardus Lodge are magnificent, and we didn't want to leave even after my friends and I had lingered there most of the day. It's in Carmel Valley --- ~15 minutes inland --- so it is warmer here than the oft overcast Monterey coast. There is a small intimate pool retreat for spa-goers as well as a larger swimming pool for more active recreation. The food we ate was delicious and healthful. I was so floored by the beauty and serenity of the location that I hardly remember the details of my massage treatment --- in my heightened state of bliss I may have dozed off --- but I remember that I loved it.
