I will go ahead and give this spa 5 stars but let me explain why... First the staff is truly amazing! Harmoni was so sweet she greeted us and showed us around the entire spa! She made us feel very welcome and I really appreciated her hospitality feel. Second, Allison did my massage which to be quite honest was a 10 out of 10 for me! That's one of the best massages I've had in a very long time! Only downside was I did a 50 minute which was not even close to long enough! I would come back to her for an 80 minute hands down no questions asked! Third, they have pretty decent amenities. The tea is freakin delicious! Water a plus! Robes were comfy and they provided sandals. Awesome! Now here are the cons: 1. The pool and jacuzzi spa are outside and shared with the hotel guests so when you go outside little kids are jumping in and out of the jacuzzi, splashing around and making a lot of noise. I believe kids should be kids and not have to feel restricted. So with that said this spa is lacking in having its own private spa jacuzzi for relaxation vibes. 2. The "relaxation room" ain't so quiet. It's too close to the entrance so when people come in or check out you hear everything which is so annoying if you're trying to read or relax before or after the massage. Plus it shares a room where the staff out away the items used. So yeah lots of movement going on. 3. The steam room completely lacks steam! Which totally defeats the purpose. I hated that so much . 4. They do not have a swim suit spinner to get the water off your swim wear! You have to leave with it sopping wet in a plastic bag. That's the upside of the situation they provide a bag for you! Big Whoop! Overall I give it a 5 for what they do have and not for what they don't! So just know if you do go that's what's lacking! read more

I was warmly greeted at the front desk and escorted right away to get changed for my massage. My massage therapist was Amy and she was lovely! The ambiance is great, soothing, and relaxing. I loved the amenities and cleanliness. I've been to spas that offer hairbrushes, but it's one that you have to share with every person in the space. The ones they offer are individually wrapped and disposable, so it's nice to take one home as well. Loved the steam room and shower. I purchased a treatment that was not fully performed, and the overall experience did not meet expectations. During my massage, there were repeated disruptions from children screaming near the pool area adjacent to the treatment room, which made it difficult to relax and enjoy the service. Additionally, my therapist left for the day before I could check out, which was unexpected and unprofessional. I shared my concerns with the receptionist, who apologized and assured me that the spa manager, Vanessa, would follow up with me the next day. Unfortunately, I never received a call or any additional communication. For a spa experience, I expect a relaxing environment, attention to detail, and strong customer service. I had the luxury of getting a 60-minute symphony massage here recently and it was great! Super convenient to access if you're staying at the Portola hotel. I was able to get an appt and did arrive 15 minutes early, per their recommendation, to get changed and have some hot tea before my appt. Funny enough, the tea available was not hot and one of the containers was empty. It seems like they need to check on this more often. My massage therapist asked at the beginning if there was anything to be aware of with my body, though didn't inquire about any scents to avoid. Lots of scents were used and I did enjoy them all, thankfully. The space is beautiful. I was able to enjoy the hot tub after my massage. I appreciated the lockers you get access to during the spa visit, free of charge. Really relaxing spot! I hope to get to come back again some day. read more

Had a couple's massage and bath session. The bath part was great. Show up early to take advantage of the hot sauna with any treatment. The massage itself was very mediocre. The therapists were not very skilled. My therapist took their time during setup and took frequent breaks during the session which cuts the massage time down a lot. Also we booked a couple's massage but they cover my eyes when I am face up? I want to see my wife. My masseuse ignored large sections of my body like my thighs. My wife left a sizable tip but upon speaking to her even she didn't think her massage was very good. She said it was no deep tissue but that she felt relaxed enough. I do not recommend this establishment for massages. The bath rental was nice - but who charges for a bath rental? Most hotels come with a bathtub, but not the Portola. read more

Booked the perfect date night package as part of my road trip vacation up the California coast and this experience was definitely the highlight of our trip. The spa is small and intimate, and doesn't have all the amenities of a large spa, but my massage therapist Dawn was one of the best. I was not surprised to hear she had over 20 years of experience as she is a master of her craft. After 6 days of long drives from Orange County, California up to Oregon she melted away all the tension and stiffness I had from sitting in a car for extended hours. Just to update people on my last review that was obviously a traumatic one, I feel completely satisfied with how management, most importantly Vanessa, the office manager has handled this. She has been in contact with me since my previous post, expressing concern, and wanting to speak with me face to face. I've been putting off the meeting due to my fear of it being confrontational. I had our meeting this morning with her, along with a senior massage therapist that worked there as well. I felt supported by Vanessa & that there was an honest concern. It wasn't a check the box, let's get this over with meeting. It is obvious to me that the spa's primary concern & goal is client well being and satisfaction. Based on how seriously Vanessa, and other team members have taken this & measures they've gone through to make sure this never happens again at their spa, I would say I would be comfortable going back. I saw the good reviews on yelp for therapist "Ashley," and she delivered a wonderful massage, and was more than just a massage therapist, she is a true healer. She was in tune with body mechanics, and I was able to entrust my body to the relaxing experience and definitely zoned out. It's nice that they've got a pool and hot tub in the back that you can use, which is open to both spa guests, but also to guests of the Plaza hotel; which did not detract from the spa experience for me. Reception and admin were professional and courteous, and a young lady even saw that my sandals were too small and immediately offered to give me larger sandals, which made a huge difference in my comfort instead of walking around with bound feet. I wish that steam rooms did not have that slightly moldy smell, but that seems to be the case at many steam rooms and the premises of the spa were very clean. They're running a good business here and offering a non-pretentious spa experience. read more

She has a way with the body-she can melt away any aches and pains. Melanie also does facials and waxing. There are lots of other great People in there. What an incredible experience! My fiancée and I scheduled 80 minute athletic and prenatal massages here to cap off our engagement trip. My massage therapist Ulisses was excellent! One of the best massages I've ever had. I mentioned the areas where I had tension and he hit on those and everything else. At the end I was feeling soooo good. He was really friendly, skilled, and knowledgeable. I recommend getting there early, using the pool/jacuzzi and steam room (both men's and women's locker room have one) before the massage. It's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. I've had many more affordable massages, this is a different level. Trust that you will not regret it. Me and my partner decided to to take a day trip during the week out to Monterey. As we were walking through downtown Monterey, we decided to stop by spa on the plaza. We ended up purchasing their day pass, which has amenities that include the pool, jacuzzi, and their steamroom. We were given lockers and provided inside the lockers was a robe, sandals, and a safe. We were told that the wellness center was also open to use. So, after changing into our robe, we stopped by the wellness center to grab a cup of tea and a cup of water. It was chamomile tea and the water had a hint of lemon and cucumber. We then made our way out to the pool. Made sure to have tons of fun and enjoy the afternoon in the Jacuzzi. They had tons of lounge chairs and a canopy if you wanted to stay out of the sun. After we finished outside we made our way back to the locker rooms. Where there were showers and a steamroom. I rinsed off with their selection of body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Made sure to clean my ears with the provided q tips and even cleaned up my shave with the razors and shaving cream they also provided. Overall the experience was amazing and we will definitely be going back soon. I would recommend this day pass to anyone that wants to escape reality for an afternoon and wants to fully emerge in a responsibility free escapade. read more

I have had several services at this spa over the last few months. The massage crew is second to none. If you ask for an athletic massage Ulises and Andres are in high demand. Ann Marie is very experienced and seems to have a way to know exactly what is bound up in my shoulder even if I can't feel it when I go in. The spa is in the process of upgrading and you can feel the changes - bright, cleaning happening continuously, steam room freshly repaired (looks new) -frequent updates of towels and robes to make it feel new, music is good - more and more new upgrades every time I go. Took my teenage girls, mom, and I here. My girls loved their lady massage therapist. They were very diligent and gave them free bracelets afterward. They got symphony massages. My mom and I did the detox wrap massage package. My massage therapist was Aura. She talked a lot during the wrap session and was not as professional as the other girls. We booked the tub soak and massage package to start off the day right in Monterey. The location is really small from the lobby viewpoint, but it's much larger once you pass the front desk. We reserved 2 massages for 50 minutes and the 30 minute tub soak. It was easy to go in the locker room and get comfortable, and everything there was very clean and well maintained. It wasn't messy at all and they offer standard spa amenities for getting ready for your day afterward. We were told to wait for our tub to be ready and someone would come soon. I think this is a reoccurring theme, but we had to remind the receptionist about our tub and as soon as we asked it was magically ready for us. It's a bit troubling that a package like this gets a bit less attention for its clients and I was hoping it was just us! Once we were finished with our soak, we were guided by our massage therapists to our room to get ready. The massage was really nice and relaxing, and I enjoyed the scented lotions and oils used. My therapist had allowed me to smell the products before giving permission which was really nice too. She was thorough in her assessment and helped me relax after a lot of the stresses from this year. I appreciated her communication about techniques and how she didn't interrupt the session beyond necessary information. I was able to let myself relax and it was a nice experience. I enjoyed how our therapists also showed us where the pool was located at and helped give us a proper tour. I think our initial one was a bit rushed, so it was nice to know where things that were available to us were at. A nice location that feels like a mid-upscale spa nearby so many Monterey attractions. I think if they work on their timing for the tub soak and offer a more thorough tour, that would really help. read more

We came to Monterey to celebrate our 7 year anniversary. We wanted to do this vacation right and start it off with some massages. We called the spa and booked the Bliss couples massage. From walking in to leaving the spa the staff made us feel extremely welcome. This place has different amenities including a steam room on site, outside pool area etc. We were welcomed by Sarah and Jenny who were both courteous and kind and led us to our masseuses Jose and Ashlea. Jose and Ashlea both made sure to keep communicating with us during our massages to make sure we were having a relaxing experience. They did an exceptional job for both of us. It was literally one of the best massages we have both had. As we were leaving Sarah helped us check out and thanked us for our business. Ashley is one of the best massage therapist I've ever experienced and there is only one other in Maui. The only reason why I booked this place was because I our normal spa The Refuge in Carmel is shutdown until October. I am super glad that The Refuge was closed otherwise I wouldn't have found this wonderful spa. To be honest the amenities aren't perfect, it's a smaller spa but what matters is the massage.
