Arrived late into Monterey for a work conference after a really long work week. Had a quick dinner and walking back to our hotel, we realized that we could really use a massage, and GG's Spa and Salon was still open even though it was pretty late. The exterior and interior were not particularly modern, and some prior reviews noted issues with communication, but we found the owner was very friendly and welcomed us in, and we were the only customers given the late hour. Overall, we liked the owner and the other team member doing the whole body massages as they both listened to feedback and adjusted pressure. GG has helped me so much with chronic pain in my lower back, my arthritic knee and plantar fasciitis. I've had problems, especially with my lower back for many years. Her acupuncture treatments are to healing, gentle and extremely effective for pain. I've experienced real relief and feel more balanced and supportive than I have from having tried many other treatments. I have noticeable improvement in my walking and overall movement and this has added to a happier feeling overall. She is equally gifted as a hairstylist, which is pretty remarkable. Robbery. I stopped in to get a last minute mani/pedi before a wedding, and this place was walking distance from the hotel. My friend had gone earlier in the day and warned that the manicurist was rough and made her bleed, but I erroneously waived this off as a fluke. Upon arrival, I was taken into a back room where, instead of a pedicure chair, there's a massage table with a bin and plastic bag. When I went to grab the book I brought, I was told I wouldn't have time because there's a "free massage." I then spent the next hour wondering what the heck is going on as the peaceful music was drowned out by people yelling to each other from different rooms, people rushing into the room to exchange distressed words with the manicurist, abrupt staff swaps, and random banging from every direction. My anxiety must have been palpable because a towel was then placed over my eyes. I was introduced to the manicurist, but never introduced to any of the other staff members. You might imagine my growing alarm, then, when all of a sudden the only person whose face I'd seen left the room, leaving me, with a towel over my eyes, with a stranger rubbing my neck. Once the massage and nails were done, I was finally allowed to look at my nails only to realize I actually could have painted them myself. With the blindfold on. And the manicurist had already left the building so there was no opportunity for correction. I know this for a fact because one of my nails was smudged, and the man who had been performing the massage tried to fix it in a panic. It took him 3 tries. I appreciated his effort. The weirdest spa pedicure. It's massage mostly with a pedicure that looks like done by a kid. They used a bucket with a clear plastic liner (like the one you use for the garbage can) to soak my feet. A female employee started the massage, then she had to leave for another client. The guy who does acupuncture did the massage, he was trained how to do it on the spot. The female employee tried to share gloves with the acupuncture guy who will do the massage next. I had to demand that he use a fresh set of gloves. I paid $60 for this type of service. I should have run out when I still could. Too late. The only good part is...Gg. She is very nice, has a good heart. I hope that she'll find a way to improve this place. read more

I was so HESITANT to visit this salon due to the lack of reviews on Yelp. I even stopped in and then said I'd check back because I was unsure. Today, I scheduled a 90 minute deep tissue and was able to get in within the hour. I will honestly say this was the best deep tissue massage I've ever had - I've had many over my almost 60 years. The massage was indeed deep tissue so be careful what you ask for! I thought for a minute I might have to ask him to go lighter but I made it through Scalp massage was like having a fabulous, deep conditioning shampoo but with no water - felt great. Some stretching involved which I also needed since I have a desk job. No conversation, which is preferable to me In town for business and staying at the Monterey Marriott which I also highly recommend . The hotel seems to have been recently renovated, is very clean and had outstanding service. I plan lots of meetings and would add this to my list. I did notify the hotel about my experience at GGs so they are able to share feedback with other guests. Lastly, the price of the massage blew my mind. Not sure if it was a special but they charged $120 for the 90 minute deep tissue I left the guy a $40 tip since the price was cheap and they exceeded my expectations. We were told to lay down and I noticed that they brought two big plastic containers with cold water. One of the employee started messing my neck and my forehead without explaining or without my permission. I was in town just overnight and needed a pedicure while staying at the hotel just across the street, so I went in here and had the most odd experience ever... the 'pedicure' took place in an easy chair that collapsed all the way down so I was laying down while my feet were placed in a bucket lined with a plastic bag and full of warm water while another person came in and massaged my neck and arms. The woman told me the massage was 'free' as part of the 'pedicure', which turned out to be about a 1 minute soak in the bucket, a nail trim and a nail polish job my 6yo could've done better. The whole of attention to my feet lasted about 5 minutes and then the massage moved to my legs and the person doing the 'pedicure' left - never to be seen again. The massage was honestly pretty good and lasted about 30 minutes when I was then told I was done. The polish on both of my big toes was lumpy and I ended up removing it and redoing it myself that night (thankfully I'd brought my own color so I could do that). In the capper to the entire experience, when I went up to pay, the guy told me it was $70?!?! What in they actual...!?! Worst mail experience ever. I had a haircut appointment and arrived a little early. The women that greet me introduced herself as the owner. We started to chat and she told me about her services she offered at the spa. I told her I was very much interested in receiving massage therapy because of the issues I have. GG said she would contact my insurance to see if my insurance would cover it. She had me fill out a form with my info and said she would contact them and give me a call after she speaks with my insurance company. Will a month later I get a notice from my insurance telling me GG filed a claim for acupuncture that I received. I was so upset and called GG asking her why she billed them for something I never did. She got very nervous, told me she didn't and that everything is fine. I called my insurance company and told them about her false claim. I cannot believe I trusted this women. She came accross so nice and helpful. I wonder how many people she has done this to. BEWARE! read more

Coming out of shelter in place due to COVID, I was eager to trim my hair. I called ahead and was told that's as long as I wear a mask I would be allowed in. I arrived on my e-scooter and requested if I could use a spare outlet that wasn't in use so I could charge up, to have enough battery to make it back home. I was rudely told "use the one outside" Being that it's in downtown Monterey I wasn't comfortable leaving it outside, especially if I was going to be occupied with getting my haircut. She reluctantly allowed me to use an outlet (after much debate) as I bent down to plug in, the lady began disparaging me in her native language with her co-worker! When I confronted her she denied it, then she hesitantly admitted that they were talking about me. I took my business elsewhere. took my daughter and a friend for an afternoon of girl time (mani/pedi) and asked if we could get them done all at the same time. Naturally the answer was yes but in reality NOT. I hate it when they lie about services that they say they can provide but can't. Not only did we start at different times (short handed) someone who doesn't even know what he's doing was working on us. Needless to say we didn't have manicures done, we could barley make it through what they called a pedicure. Love this place! GG is the sweetest and gives great wisdom when I see her. She offers such a variety of services. I wish I could go every week and try something new. My hair cut was a great price at $35 and simply fantastic and exactly what wanted. Can't wait to try foot massage and facial Update: have continued to come here for acupunture when I feel an injury coming on (I'm a runner), has done magic twice. My mom got her long term foot toe issue fixed in one session, my mother in m-law her long term ear buzz fixed in one session and broken ankle pin subsided, multiple friends have also shared great results from the acupuncture. My family and I were visiting Monterey, and staying at the Marriott across from GG's. I got a spare few hours and just called to check if I could have a last-minute mani/pedi. Was that a great idea! I ended up having also a 1-hour full-body massage and a leg wax in under 3 hours. I have been in salons in SF, Boston, NY and London: GG is one of the best. Wax: GG is fast and thorough. The results are excellent. Massage: I cannot express in words how good the therapist was! It compared to a similar session in a chiropractic clinic. Mani/pedi: The chair is laying flat, which it initially seems a little strange. You then understand that the purpose is to get a head/shoulder massage while the toenails dry, and a relaxing foot massage while the fingernail dry! I can never get a normal mani/pedi now that feels as good... Many thanks to GG and her team: we may be coming back to Monterey soon for a weekend, and your salon will be the reason--not the Aquarium. read more

Let me just list pros and cons and you can decide: PROS: Took my daughters and I at the last minute on a Saturday morning, so they're very accommodating - location is easy to find - there is a parking garage down the street to avoid the 1 hour parking zones (and Monterey parking enforcement is abuzz so don't risk it!) - the prices are affordable and they offer so much, you can go and just decide based on your budget what you'd like (chair massage $20 for 15 mins and it was awesome) - my daughters opted for eyebrow waxes and GG did a phenomenal job on both girls AND it was super fast. CONS: The website gives the appearance that it's a luxurious place but really its in the middle of a downtown area where traffic and honking horns can be heard; not very spa-like or peaceful. I also opted for a shellac manicure however my nail lady Sally was sweet but very new and verrrrrrrry slow. My daughters were waaaaay done with their 2 services by the time I finished my 2. The shellac selection was not up to par - I had 3 shades of pink to choose from whereas where I regularly go back home there are tons and tons of colors to choose from. And instead of a pallet of nail colors, I was told she could brush the color on me and if I didn't like it she would remove it. =/ Reading the other reviews, I'm thinking the foot massage is a big hit (one hour foot massage but they apparently massage more than your feet so it's worth it) They're open late until 10pm so if you work in the area or are a weary tourist, it's very convenient. read more

I have been coming here for years and have been more than satisfied with every treatment I received. Recently I said to GG that I have had dietary issues for years, I have been lactose and gluten intolerant for more than 7 years. GG suggested I try acupuncture, reluctantly I agreed. To say I was a sceptic would be putting it mildly, but after just 1 treatment my stomach issues literally went away. I spent about an hour receiving acupuncture and when I was done she told me to go home and eat whatever I wanted. I did so expecting to have the usual pain and other discomforts but to my absolute joy and surprise I had none! It has been over a month and a have eaten cheese every day, it has truly given me my life back. I am a believer and recommend her to to everyone read more

I am amazed! I really needed a last minute in an out type of waxing. I was out within 10 minutes and apart from only wanting an upper lip wax, I decided to do my brows too since the prices were amazing. $7 for upper lip $10 for brows I usually don't trust many people with eyebrows, but decided why not I was wowed! I can't believe all the negative reviews for GG's! Though I haven't been here since Summer 2010, it's been a hard act to follow for the nail salons here in Austin, Texas. It's super inexpensive for a pedicure (which is my one big girlie vice). And yet, the salon really does feel like a salon -- NOT like a strip-mall cubicle. Beautiful, tranquil setting. Great O.P.I. color selection. Enough gossip magazines to choke a moose (if that was your thing). And the PEDICURES ... Okay. (I'm getting a little farklempt just thinking about this.) Dimming the harsh lights, they put you in a sun-lit room with white papasan chairs and woven baskets in front of said chairs. Lined with plastic, this will be your soaking tub. And then they infuse the water with tea. (Tea, people ... TEA! I feel more at-peace just TYPING that!) They soak your unworthy dogs in tea, massage the care out of every last pore, then lovingly beautify each little toe. All for MUCH less than you'd ever expect. The absolutely, undeniably, cannot-get-over-it BEST part of GG's? Their HOURS. Holy Mother. Monday through Saturday, they're open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. As for Sunday ... You know -- Sunday? That day you can't find anything open? 10 P.M. TO 10 P.M.! Oh, how I miss you, GG's! (GG herself is a doll to talk to, as well.) Weird experience, had a massage here today by a masseuse that spoke no English at all, I mean nothing!! She couldn't understand any of my requests or even when I asked that she turn down the music, whenever I would ask her to go easier or pay attention to my lower back All I got was "no englisss" The massage itself was mediocre at best. The absolute weirdest massage pedicure ever. I wasn't expecting much for $45 bucks but this was horrible I couldn't wait for it to be over. First, they put me in this dark room with sandpaper-like towels to lay on. I know they were clean because they reeked like bleach. The lady covered my face with the sandpaper like wash cloth and then some guy walked in. Didn't say anything just started massaging my ears. So, then he started massaging my face and worked his way to the arms. He pulled and squished them and then did some weird thing to my hands. Then he had me roll over to my stomach and he gave me a paper towel to rest my face on. I kept trying not to look at the guy because I was afraid it would ruin the massage. He threw a towel over my back and the towel was so ruff it gave me a rug burn on my neck. He finished me off with the standard "chop chop" move. And said, "ok, done lady". So, now time for pedi- she brought out a trash can with a can liner and plain ol Luke warm water. She scrubbed my feet with a pumice stone and back in the now cold plain water. Then it was time to "piccolor" I picked a nice neutral pink. She must have forgotten that a pedicure usually consists of an actual pedicure. So she smeared some polish on a tadaaaa! Donzo! I was on vacation with the hubby and he had to make a phone call we just happened to be parked across the street and I decided what the hay? Can't be that bad. Over all I gave it a 2 because Everyone should experience this so they appreciate a real massage and pedi which should actually start at $150, not $45. No good service will ever be this cheap. We were told that the manicurist would be in a few minutes, we were sat down and our feet and hands were put in Luke warm water, after 25 minutes the water was cold and there was still no manicurist. Just when I was about to tell them I was ready to go three manicurist came in. The lady who did mine was very rough and in a hurry, not talking to me or even paying attention that I was uncomfortable and not enjoying myself. The other ladies that were there at least made and effort to conversant with my daughter and I. I left there with wet nails as she rushed me out of the shop, my nails look jagged and the polish is already coming of. It's only been an hour since we left. read more

The owner (GG) gives one of the best haircuts I have ever had.... So why not 5 stars???? Well the interior is disorganized, messy and not as clean as we expect and require of our spas and salons. I almost ran out as the receptionist (also a stylist) started washing my hair. I felt like I was her first customer- too soapy, not connecting with my scalp and a bit off. I was stared complaining and the owner (GG) came and finished. Wow what a relief. Well the end result was fabulous. I would drive back down there (from Marin) for another cut but the physical atmoshpere is not inviting. (They are located close to the Marriot Hotel so local is terrific) The price was great and the post-cut compliments were bountiful. They might receive lots of clients if invested in a a make-over and a cleanup. So if you don't mind the physical set-up and want an amazing cut- then go to GG's and have GG cut your hair. read more
