I booked a pedicure because my feet have clearly been in boots all winter and since Humboldt's finally getting some sun, I was hoping to get my feet cleaned up. The salon has far too much furniture/stations crammed into the small space. Multiple chairs have peeling leather seats and could use a basic wipe down, and the paint on the walls has clearly seen better days and was chipping off. At the beginning, I specifically requested that the calluses on my heels be worked on and inquired about the callus remover add-on - she said I didn't need it and that the scrub and pumice stone would be enough. She wore her hair down and it kept brushing my feet, which was unpleasant. My tech finished my pedicure, said she'd leave me for a bit while the polish dried and disappeared. *Forty* minutes later, I finally flagged down someone else to finish up and get me checked out. That woman said regular polish should be set and ready to go after 20 minutes, so who the hell knows where my tech went. I got home, and my heels look the exact same as they did before I went in - zero change. And my calves are weirdly gritty instead of moisturized feeling, like they are after every other pedicure I've gotten. Absolutely love wasting $65 dollars. The polish is cute but I could have done that at home for free. read more

I made the mistake of not realizing their online Gift Cards were physical and needed to be mailed. It was my fault for waiting until the last minute and not realizing what I was purchasing. I had thought it would arrive to my email. As soon as I realized my error I called them four minutes to close. When I saw their closing time I felt super bad as it was about four minutes till. However, the representative that answered the phone was so kind and welcoming. They made me feel okay about calling in so late. They told me that they could definitely refund the certificates, but I asked if I could just pick them up instead of mailing them. She wasn't sure, but told me that if they couldn't we could still do the return and repurchase. I arrived as soon as they were open the next day to a busy and bustling location with a happy warmth. I'm giving a one star review instead of no stars only because the young woman at the front desk was so sweet and kind, and the gal who did my pedicure was very nice as well. But the pedicure was not good. My nails didn't look well shaped or symmetrical. There was zero scrub, massage, or callus removal, which should have been done according to what I scheduled and paid for. I did not arrive late or take long to choose my polish so in retrospect I just don't understand why I paid for some thing that I did not get. In the moment they killed me with kindness, but I ultimately felt like I got ripped off. Also, because the pedi was so bad, it makes me honestly question whether the person who was doing my pedicure was actually licensed to do so? They definitely didn't make sure to provide the service that was booked. This was my first time back to personal choice for a pedicure in a long while since the last time when I ended up with the most horrific infection that began at the cuticle area on my big toe. Here's the important part: While she was massaging my foot and calves, she did this foot stretching thing. It was too much, so I pulled away and told her so. The next day I was in SO much pain, hurt to walk. I had plantar's fasciitis in that foot many years ago and because she pushed too hard she messed up my foot. It hurt for over a month. I called the manager to let her know, she was apologetic and said she would refund my money. She took my address and I never got that check. I've had many many pedicures since my foot got better years ago, but never seen someone so aggressive with the stretches. SO just be aware. Should've called an injury lawyer. read more

I kept feeling awkward and tried to create conversation. The experience was unpleasant until I wanted to schedule other services. That's when she perked up and wanted to talk. I also purchased products she suggested. Later when I needed to reschedule my consultation due to a family emergency I was told by the front desk that I would be charged 20% for the canceled service. I get there and the lady that did my facial led me to a room(she left) and I got undressed into towel-dress and she started the facial, and immediately said that I would "need" a second facial. Very relaxing process. She told me everything she was gonna do and what she was using. After the facial was done she massaged my hands and during that time, a worker walked in without knocking, then left. I got dressed and met her in the front. She then told me about some products they have while putting a primer on my face. Then she asked "which one do you want?" and I asked if I had to pay for them(yes I did have to) I told her I will think about it and she then said that "they can book me for my second facial". The owner Susan was listening into my conversation at check out that I accidentally left my gift certificate at home (mom brain) and I was genuinely sorry and I offered to go home and bring it in or mail it. Receptionist was able to look it up in the system that my husband did pay for this service. However, Sue stared me down and demanded I bring it in because "book keeping would be flustered without it." Are you kidding me? Book keeping is more important than me? Your paying customer? A human being! My husband had purchased many spa packages here for his employees' wives and has spend thousands of dollars here. In addition, I was overcharged after nail treatment and they forced me to pay. I want my refund for the over charge. Furthermore, we will not do business here any longer. I felt the scrub could have been longer as it didnt really do much for my feet. maybe she was rushed. My friend barley got any type of massage and was done a few minutes before me even though they started at the same time. My friend had a gift card for a specific pedi and they ended up just doing the bare minimum pedi. She left the excess money from the gift card for a tip. I thought that was weird and makes me question which service they actually give when someone comes in with a gift card for a specific service. They did offer me champagne and a warm shoulder wrap to relax... that was nice. I'm the mother of two children under the age of two who was looking for a much needed day of relaxation and tranquility. After having time to reflect on the severity of what occurred, unfortunately, my experience at this establishment turned out to be an overall nightmare and far from relaxing. The nightmare started with a shoddy eyebrow waxing from the inept stylist, Renee, which resulted in an abrasion and burn from an unknown substance not intended to be applied to the face. Renee did admit in hindsight that the substance she applied to my face, (which was supposed to be the after-wax cooling gel) did appear "more runny than usual". This burn/abrasion is still healing 4 weeks later and I can only hope the scar heals fully within a few months. I was concerned enough to see my physician who prescribed an anti-biotic ointment to assist with the healing process. Not only did I have my skin burned, I had to endure insensitive, inappropriate and unprofessional banter regarding the topic of cutting AKA self-harm between Renee and another employee. I was shocked and appalled at the absent mindedness and incompetency between these two employees, especially in front of two clientele. Before deciding to write this review, I have attempted to call 3 times to speak with a higher-up to discuss my concerns. I've been told each time my message will be forwarded to Sue, who from my understanding, is the owner. Almost a month later and I still have not heard back from Sue, which leads me to believe she is non-too concerned about running a quality business or upholding a high standard for her spa. Although unfortunate and disappointing, not surprising, seeing as though there's not much competition in Humboldt. To whomever is reading this: if you decide to spend your money at this spa, I truly hope you have an infinitely better experience than I did, but please be weary and cautious. This place does very little to attempt to uphold any degree of excellence and it gravely shows by their lack of unprofessionalism. read more

Went there yesterday for my first time. I loved the decor and everyone who worked there was so sweet. The beautiful redhead at the front counter was so helpful and made me feel like an old friend. I started my spa experience with Pattie, who gave me a lovely massage with a citrus scrub followed by the vichy shower, which was the most relaxing experience ever! Patti was so warm, kind, and really made me feel comfortable in her care. I thoroughly enjoyed the full experience thanks to her. I then went and had a mani and pedi with Molly, who also made me feel so at ease in her bubbly presence. She's a young woman working hard, loving her job, and it shows. Great experience! She proceeded to talk about her hysterectomy while doing my facial. Throughout the whole experience of my facial/pedicure I felt like she was rushing through the motions (probably because like she said she was starving). I want to start this by saying everyone was very nice, in fact there seems to be an abundance of workers there, most hanging out at the front desk. I had booked an appointment for a brow tint, brow wax, and hair cut. I had to wait for my scheduled appointment because they were a bit behind, no big deal, it's not the best but that's what I've come to expect in the area [I live here, I love it here, but punctuality is appreciated, all of our time is important]. The brow tint was not what I was expecting - it was more like an eyebrow dye, not the brow tint you see on social media. The brow wax was quick, I was a bit concerned most of it took place while stationed on one side of my head instead of both sides evenly. When I went home there was definitely still wax residue and many hairs that should have been removed. The hair cut was the kicker. The shampoo was nice, a bit more thorough than other places I've gone, but I still felt like the back of my head was a bit ignored. I had a picture, I talked about what I was hoping for, and we went to work. But I was a bit nervous, I didn't feel like the focus was on the hair cut, it seemed a bit rushed and distracted, the bangs - I'm just never trusting anyone to cut my bangs again. The hairdresser was older and nervous to cut them, that isn't a good sign to me. They also were parted straight across my scalp as opposed to the more pyramid like part I've had my whole life from every other salon. It's a blunt Betty bang, I don't understand the complication. I've had the cut for a week now and can say 100%, that my hair is not even on each side. One side is a good inch plus longer, I have curly hair and it is very clear one side is longer, there is no hiding it. Overall, their clientele appears to be seniors, and there is nothing wrong with that. I just didn't realize it would limit the repertoire. Why not go back and request my hair be fixed? I've never had luck in that department, I'm not sure anyone has. When we pay for a service, we expect it to be done correctly and with care. I was very hopeful and had bought a gift card at Costco, so now I have one left and no idea when or if I'd use it. I'm certainly not going back for a haircut. read more

The manicure itself was ok but upon paying for it, I was charged $82.50. Here's the breakdown. Shellac manicure $42.50 Shellac removal $15.00 Nail Art (French) $15.00 There was no mention of nail art, for pete's sake, i ordered a french spa manicure! Doesn't that include nail art? I got my underarms waxed here today. I have tried several places in town and never had this happen to me. The lady that did my waxing was so ruthless with my skin that it got badly bruised. She even mentioned my bruise while providing nothing to sooth them. I gave the place a call to let them know of this poor service after seeing how bad my underarms looked and they didn't even care. We came 10 mins early and they treated us right away, my friends had facials while I did a Brazilian wax it was my first time and she was friendly, quick and was able to pull every hair out without it being too painful. Then we all met up and got pedicures. The place is small but quiet and has plenty of natural light making the spa look bigger and friendlier. Also has a nice view, very relaxing. I love this place. I've honestly tried every place in Eureka for hair cuts, massages, everything and I always end up coming back to here! The massage medley is wonderful- but you have to understand what it is. They use a series of different things like brushes, hot stones, warm towels- and that requires times to set up and move around. The massage medley isn't my personal favorite (again, I stress, it IS WONDERFUL), but I like their general massage or hot stone massage. I've never had a bad massage, ever and I've been going for a few years off and on now. I get my haircut there frequently as well. Every time I've went, the ladies have been full of energy and talkative. I personally don't like a quiet time at the salon :). And I swear, they do the best nails in town. They just have nice perks that other places don't.. Hot tea, lavender neck wraps.. Plus they sell really pretty things. Go here! It's great! read more

My wife and I checked into our hotel just after 3:00 pm. We decided to visit an area referred to as Old Town. I would guess that Old Town is about 1/4 mile long but there are some interesting shops in the area as well as a few restaurants. At any rate, my wife was interested in getting a manicure so Personal Choice was one of three salons that we visited but the only one to have a manicurist on duty around 5:00. All I can say is, if we lived in the area, this would be her go-to place. We were offered beverages as we waited as well as neck warmers. My wife said her technician was really very detailed oriented and excellent at her craft. There are a multitude of other spa services available. I made one appointment, wasn't able to make it on-time, and they easily re-scheduled me same day which was great! When I came in I was greeted with adorable, calming Ferren and a snobby looking person behind the desk. Man am I glad it was Ferren who did my facial! This girl at the front desk looked like she hated me and was staring down her nose at me! How uncomfortable! I get that I suck at time management, but you shouldn't work with people if you don't like them... Luckily, Ferren was super sweet and helped me to immediately forget how I had initially felt. She made me feel comfortable and relaxed just by the way she spoke. The Spa At Personal Choice is in a beautiful building. I love all the wood and the rooms were great! It is a perfect place for a spa. It was neat, clean, and comfortable. It's nice that they offer so many services, too. When you are inside, you forget that you're in Eureka. I felt entirely pampered. Ferren was exactly as I imagined a masseuse or facialist (is this a word?) would be. She has a soothing voice, and amazing hands. I didn't think I was going to be getting a scalp and hand massage! She really knew what she was talking about- both with my skin and their products. Afterward, I felt relaxed and glowing. :-) It was nice, also, because I had no cash and they were able to take my honey's card over the phone for gratuity. I have been going here for several years to get my hair cut and colored, and I am always VERY happy when I leave. Everybody is always so nice and friendly and accommodating. You can get hot tea upon arrival, which is nice on a cold morning, and you can can get a heated neck wrap, which feels nice too. To me, they are worth the price, although some may find them to be a tad pricey. For me, it's my quality "me" time. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! This is the first review I have ever made. I feel compelled to warn people, not waste their hard earned money on a faulty massage. My boyfriend and I paid $300 for a 80 minute massage. After the 60 minutes, it was over. Than we were both in more pain than when we went in. The therapist seemed like they were in a rush, my boyfriend kept getting nudged by the other lady. It was nothing like the description, it consists of towels and pain. We are both sore in places that felt completely fine before walking in. Both of us have received numerous messages in the past, hands down this was the worst one. We left feeling taken advantage of and completely unsatisfied. In short, you would be better stepping in front of a bus. Less pain and cheaper. read more
