I have a stellar experience each time I visit Fitness SF. The front desk guy, Ryan, is usually…read moreworking and has been very friendly and accommodating. He's also a dog lover and took great care of my dog while I worked out. Even gave him some treats which was super sweet of him!! I was initially worried I might not have access to the same equipment I had at other locations due to the smaller space but that wasn't an issue at all!! They also have a bunch of stuff to aid in recovery that I didn't know about. Ryan recommended the inflatable compression sleeves for my legs. I had never tried them before and he walked me through putting them on. Highly recommend this gym and am grateful for Ryan!

It honestly feels like you're in a submarine. The men's locker room is tiny, and like most gyms,…read morethey've oversold memberships and it shows everywhere. The pool is pure chaos. About a year ago, they had a policy of onsite lane reservations, which is the right thing to do if you don't have online lane reservations. You had a clear start and end time, could plan your workout, and actually get a full swim in. For some reason, they've stopped doing that. Now you show up with no idea if you'll even get a lane, let alone finish in time to get to work. They're also allowing three or more people per lane, which is just unrealistic. Once a third person joins, it stops being a workout and turns into traffic management. You can forget about flip turns entirely. The lane speed designations don't help either. Most people are on tight schedules and aren't going to wait around for the "right" lane to open up. They also block off a lane for personal training, which is understandable, but that lane could still accommodate another swimmer. Decisions like this chip away at what's supposed to be a core service. Most pools in the city allow reservations. You can reserve a lane. Some even have a no show fee which totally works. you can't trust humans to so the right thing here because they in most cases won't. Bottom line, the lack of reservations and overcrowding make it impossible to plan a consistent, efficient swim. It turns something that should be straightforward into a daily gamble.

No frills, no nonsense gym that has everything you need to get a good workout in…read more After moving back to San Francisco in the middle of last year I was looking for a gym that was more local/ in my neighborhood that I could walk to rather than taking public transit to another part of the city. That's when I came across the Sunset Gym this past December. I started my membership with a week long pass and eventually converted it to a monthly membership. (The payment for the week pass went into my first month of membership) Pricing wise this place is a very reasonable compared to the bigger chains (i.e Fitness SF), but admittedly you are also restricted to one location. For me though, that's not a problem as I wanted a neighborhood gym more than anything. The gym itself is great - it's old school (think OG Gold's Gym style). Downstairs has plenty of free weights and a good selection of machines. Upstairs has a dedicated Cardio area, a spot for stretching, as well as additional free-weights and an outdoor area. Staff I've interacted with so far have been wonderful. Very glad to have found a great gym close by to where I live

Definitely a transit-first or walk-from-your-home-type gym, 9th and Irving is not known for its parking (though it IS known for it's ever-present MTA carts zipping around). Love the towels, the multiple bathrooms and showers, the fans everywhere, and the small outdoor area on the second floor.

The fitness sf is where the others go to socialize on the strip The Fillmore location is where you go to swim and beginners due to the lack of equipment. The soma one is def my go to since I've started lifting weights. The location is very open; the areas are labeled and separated "arms" "legs" etc and helped me navigate what areas of the gym focus on certain muscle groups for a beginning weight lifter. I like the natural sunlight lighting the gym gives off compared to the other locations. It's all an open concept and has two main areas of the gym, while the other locations are split by an upstairs (Castro) and multiple walls (Fillmore). I like the soma location way more due to being able to see the other weights easily and know what's available and not. The bathroom for the men are pretty clean and always has a worker tidying up. Staff is always friendly and telling people to have a good workout. Lockers need your own locks unlike Fillmores location that has built in ones. Fillmore locations looks like it has more newer/remodeled things in the men's bathrooms compared to Somas. But they lack the amount of equipment that Soma offers. Which is why I like somas much more, thar and fillmores entire gym is so separated by walls every couple equipments and it takes a while to know the gym to fill comfortable vs wasting time trying to find out where an equipment is, and they feel so close to one another vs the somas open building concept. But nice staff as well. Yes the soma ones can get busy and that sucks when people are on their phones or taking forever but it's the price you pay when going during certain times. I do like how they have a Dog Room: glass door inside area where you can keep your dogs there, it can keep about 3-4 medium size dogs comfortable for your hour workout, and the soma location also have a Simply SF Cafe area by the entrance for smoothies. There is a parking lot right across the street for members (just be sure to get your membership sticker tag otherwise I've heard people have got tickets/towed) WiFi: FITNESS SF Soma Password: livefitness I wish it had a sauna or pool (filmore location has that) but overall I feel I get a good muscle workout when going here compared to the other locations.

This location has a good line up of group classes, parking, chiropractor, and excellent staff who manage the front desk and the membership experience. Many thanks to Brianna who was such a great resource to me as I was new to SF and the neighborhood. My favorite workout here is with Mac Solomon. He leads small group boxing and strength classes, and I also worked with him one-on-one for personal training. Mac is knowledgeable, approachable, and highly effective, expect to sweat! After working with him I feel stronger, happier, and more confident in my ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle for many years to come. Just a heads-up: not all gym locations have the same amenities, so if something specific is important to you (like parking or classes), be sure to ask ahead of time.

The stairmasters have been broken for some time now with the first one being broken for 2-3 months. One by one they broke & now they're all broken. I understand gym equipment can break from time to time but the fact that ALL stairmasters are broken, 30% of ellipticals are broken, a handful of treadmills, & the weight machines upstairs are missing pins, broken cables, etc is just pitiful from a gym like this. VARIOUS THINGS HAVE BEEN BROKEN FOR MONTHSSSS!!! The LEAST they could do is communicate to us what is going on & what they are doing to rectify this situation. I usually do not write reviews unless necessary to make a change to the establishment. I hope this review finds its way to someone who can do something Side note: this gym also is starting to have an issue with people hogging machines while doomscrolling on their phones between sets as they are "resting". If that grind your gears, this is a heads up. Side side note: notice how management only replies to "positive reviews"; this is a critical review from an intermediate gym goer(3 years of hypertrophy training) for some context.

Housekeeping: 5 stars! Professional and super hard working. (As other reviewers have said.)…read more Equipment and fitness floor: 2.75 stars: they have a few interesting machines, but they don't have enough of the more popular standard ones. There is one of each of the weight machines so the wait times can be pretty long any part of the day. They could repurpose some of the open mat area, which is unnecessarily large in comparison to the area dedicated to the machines. Group fitness classes: 3.5 stars: they have a lot of good classes. There is not enough variety, as other reviews noted. I remember when they had tons of Pilates mat classes. Now they focus mostly on Zumba, which is wonderful...we need more strength training (like Pilates or such). Spa and pool facilities: 2.5 stars. The women's locker room is well maintained, and is the main reason why we continue to choose this gym. They recently installed some very temperamental locks in the women's locker rooms, and the numbers on the locks are super small to read...seems like an ADA issue; As it is, the housekeeping staff needs to help with lock-outs all day. (And they still keep the place sparkling clean! Hence five stars in the first category above.) The women's steam room is offline chronically due to repair issues. And so women who use the pool need to walk, dripping with cold pool water, through a lounge/lobby area while the steam room is under construction. These conditions have been true for over two months now. And there is no good timeline for when the steam room and direct access to the pool area will be restored. The steam room was under construction in 2025, too. Security team is incredible. Bottom line: if housekeeping and security could run the whole place, this would be a five-star review; If you need to get through your workout efficiently, and don't want to wait in line for a shoulder press or leg press, maybe check another gym with more than one of each type of machine. If you want daily cardio-type fitness classes, and don't need machines or weight lifting work, this gym is a good option. Just don't bring a bag that you need to stow in a locker to avoid the hassle of getting locked out! (Bags of any kind are prohibited on the gym floor.) We have been members for a long time, and so we have a reasonable rate. I would not pay the current prices, however, as it feels like too much for what they currently offer. Hope this helps you decide on the best gym for your needs!
