Cool little dinner spot in the inn. Apparently has live music some nights but we didn't have it that night. Nice little bar there too. We got oysters which were good. The food is very bland, and it's a hard comparison to other local restaurants where the food tastes much better at equivalent prices. Was in town for my bachelorette and decided to dine there first night. When we first arrived, it took about 10 to 15 minutes to get a table given that there was currently a murder mystery dinner party going on. After we were seated, our server came quickly and we were all able to order food. Our experience was good! I must say they had one of the best French onion soups I've had!! Very cheesy, and bread to soup ratio was perfect. Also tried the tenderloin tips with a cream sauce that was delicious, Rockefeller oysters, burger, and salad! This place is in The Mimslyn Inn. You can enter it from the outside directly to the left of the Inn. Though a bit modern in feel, it still has a good foundation for the Speakeasy name. On a Wednesday evening for dinner there was a one-man guitar band that did a decent job playing music I think most people would recognize at a background volume level that was a super nice add to the meal. Service was great, and I enjoyed a couple of local beers as I sampled the Fried Green Tomatoes - Golden Fried Corn Meal Dusted Green Tomatoes, Quinoa Crusted Shrimp, Honey Carrot and Radish Slaw, with Honey Sriracha Ranch, at the table. That plus a Caesar Salad - Chopped Romaine Tossed in House Caesar Dressing, Herbed Croutons, Red Onion and Shaved Parmesan, for me followed by my main meal of Duck - Slow Roasted Duck Breast with Sweet Cherry Cabernet Sauce, Whipped Potatoes and Sautéed Broccolini. The duck really made the night. I really enjoyed the dish (which was one of the specials for the night). Just came back after dining at this restaurant. On a Saturday night, it was packed. We were a party of 6, and had to wait for 30 minutes or so. Once we were seated, our server was very attentive and made sure we were doing ok. She was very friendly. They do have a kids menu available per request. Here is what I ordered: - Fried Green Tomatoes: this comes with fried shrimp as well. I asked for the shrimp to be placed separately, so my family could eat it. The fried tomatoes were the best I've ever eaten. They were just so good. We even ended up packing an order to go for home. The shrimp was delicious too. - Black Bean Burger: this was mediocre. The patty was too bland for my taste. Overall, loved the vibe of the restaurant and we had a great time. Wish they had more veggie options. read more

We were intrigued by the speakeasy so we had to try it. It is not a speakeasy by any means. The only speakeasy thing about it is the name and that it's in the bottom of the Mimslyn Inn hotel. I've been to other speakeasies that really played the part. This was just a normal restaurant. It didn't really have any fancy cocktails either. Food was good. We got the Virginia ham flatbread to start. It had little strips of ham, Brie and caramelized onions. It should have been called a Brie flatbread since that's what it tasted like. I love Brie though so I was happy, but you couldn't really taste the ham. For my meal, I got the lobster ravioli which came in a tarragon cream sauce. It was yummy. Don't think it was homemade, but it was still good. Hubby got the Reuben with fries. The fries came out with ketchup so he asked for some remoulade. The remoulade was listed under the fish and chips, so we figured he would be able to get some. The waitress didn't know what we were talking about so she brought us tartar and ranch. He liked the ranch and ate all his food. He said the Reuben was good. We also got a bottle of Riesling, which was nice. The restaurant just needs a little face lift. Maybe some new carpet and something to make it more of a speakeasy vibe. Service was friendly and attentive. We don't need to come back here, but we're glad we tried it. read more

The food and service was great, the drinks were ok. My friends got the sangria and peach Manhattan and it tasted a bit too much of juice. I got a French 75 and it was great! Maybe stick to the classics instead of ordering off the specials menu. We started our meal off with fried green tomatoes (8.5/10) and duck empanadas (9.5/10). They had so much flavor. We then got our meals, which were the filet mignon (8/10), bistro filet (7/10), and I got lobster ravioli (9/10). I think I preferred the filet mignon special because the sauce that came with it and the lobster ravioli was very filling. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the mains. We ended our night with dessert. We got the chocolate raspberry torte (9.5/10) and apple pie with brown butter ice cream (8/10). The chocolate raspberry torte was the perfect balance of light and rich, which probably sounds impossible. The brown butter ice cream is what really pulled the apple pie rating so high. We really our Valentines Day dinner at The Speakeasy! We began the night with drinks, the special "Sweet Tart" Casi made was spot on, it was actually so good, that I decided to get a second one! Wonderful little restaurant with really cool decor with old photos from the Prohibition Era and stained glass. The exposed brick on the one wall was really nice, as well. As most restaurants are currently, they were short-staffed, but they did a wonderful job in spite of it. My girlfriend and I both had the pecan-crusted chicken, which was absolutely delicious. The bread that came before the meal was really tasty and they had an herb butter to go with it that was good, as well. This is the first place in Luray I've eaten and really been blown away with. In all areas, this restaurant is fantastic. I ordered a good amount of entrees even some I would consider difficult to get right and I was thoroughly impressed. The ambience is cute and cozy. I loved the old school black and white images and booths. We started with some drinks. I got a bold rock and my boyfriend got a classic margarita. The server brought me a chilled glass with my beer. I like how they go above and beyond to make the experience fancier than the general vibe of the restaurant would expect. My boyfriends margarita was tasty- a little heavy on the mixer but enjoyable. I moved on to the French onion soup. Pretty much perfectly executed. My only complaint would be the lack of broth but it was only replaced with more onion, bread, and meaty cheese so it's really not a complaint at all. For entrees I got the southern spicy pasta and my boyfriend got the lamb t-bone. Wow!! Did I mention these plates were under $16 I mean that is something I would never see in the DMV area. The pasta is homemade, very filling and satisfying. No meat in this entree so it's a little costly ($15) considering it's only pasta, sauce, and some veggies. However, the veggies were cooked perfectly, still had a little crunch to them and the sauce was plentiful and flavorful. That's all I could ask for. The lamb was prepared medium and was PERFECT. Not over cooked, very tender, marinated well. Taste was on point. The whipped potatoes were to die for and the cream sauce on top!!! I mean really what a treat. We substituted the green beans for sweet potato fries for an additional $.99 charge. They were cut thick, fried on the outside, and squishy and sweet on the inside. Truly a remarkable plate. *Side note- prices seem appropriate due to smallish serving sizes, not exactly dinner portion if you ask me (considering we dined around 5pm). * However, the overall quality and skill put into each plate makes it worth it. TRUST me when I say I would never make this statement unless I really meant it. By the end of the meal we were stuffed. No room for dessert. Service was prompt! The manager checked in with each table to make sure everything was going well and our server was so pleasant always with a smile on her face. I simply could not understand why this restaurant would receive any less than 3 stars. While I haven't tried the whole menu, what I had was spot on! Both came out quickly and were very good. For our entrees we got the duck, black bean burger, reuben and schnitzel. We all loved our meals. The black bean burger was one of the best I've had and the duck was very tender. I can't say the dessert was the star of the show, but oh my gosh the peanut butter terrine was amazing. My husband and I arrived in Luray rather later on in the day and after the long drive in from MA I had no urge to go grocery shopping so we ended up stopping in at the speakeasy, the service was good but rather slower than we're used to, but we're on vacation what's the rush? It took us about 10 minutes to be seated even though there were multiple open tables there seemed to be a large party in another area of the restaurant that the servers were also tending to, so that may have been what took them awhile. After being seated our server came up to us with iced waters and introduced herself as August, very nice young lady. We stuck with the iced waters and each started with the French onion soup. August shortly after brought over warm rolls and multigrain bread with these cute little dollops of chive/onion whipped butter which was incredible, I wish there had been more on the plate!! Our French onion soup was PERFECT! Piping hot, just the right amount of salt, a lot of places overdo the salt content in French onion soup but theirs was perfect! Packed with flavor but my only complaint was it was in the oven or broiler too long, my cheese was extra crispy and my husbands started to char which he likes I'm just not a fan. For our main course I got the black and bleu burger and waffle fries (delicious) and my husband got the Virginia ham flat bread appetizer as his meal, I absolutely tried his and it was amazing! My burger was cooked perfectly, I ordered it medium but it was more medium well than anything but not charred and that's the only thing I cared about. The patty was overly salty but it was canceled out by the bread and onion straws and such, easy to overlook. During our meal service slowed down drastically due to a picky patron trying to have cocktails made that they didn't offer, so our wait to get dessert was drawn out and we ordered a peanut butter dessert to go (I forgot the name) and even that took forever at no fault of our server she had the patience of a saint. We called asking for a wait time and the person on the phone refused to give us a time. We walked in and she said she wasn't sure how long the wait would be so we sat at the bar and got a drink. We stayed in Luray for 3 nights and had a wonderful dinner here each night. It's a 30's style restaurant and bar. Definitely kid friendly. Our daughter was welcomed every night by the wonderful staff. When you are there take advantage of the weeknight specials! Especially Friday when you get half off a bottle of the house wine!
