I was told that my dog WOULD NOT be allowed in "group play" being that he is over 7 months and not neutered. I took him to the vet to get the vaccinations required to be at daycare. At first I was happy to hear that an accommodation could be made for my dog to interact with humans and get out for some potty breaks. I only needed 3 hours to take an exam. I brought in his breakfast and came back 3 hours later to get my dog. When I walked in his food was still out in the lobby.... The employee or owner (unsure) who greeted me asked who I was there to pick up. I told her my dog's name and she said "wow he hasn't been here very long. I haven't gotten a chance to meet him yet." I thought that was bizarre... then what was he doing? 2 days later I received his "report card" which included the photo I posted below. My dog was in fact in group play. Not only could he have gotten another dog pregnant... he came home with kennel cough. Another vet bill later he is okay.... But still. What on earth are they doing in there? How many other "accommodations" are they making that aren't kept?? Maybe another dog didn't need to get a bordetella vaccination and that's how mine came home with it? I don't know but a 30$ stay for 3 hours (including the price to just make an account) plus over $300 in vet bills later. I'm not happy and would never recommend this facility to someone. I truly hope no one came home with puppies because I know that is a lot more than $300. PSA if your dog stayed here on July 14, 2025 they may also have kennel cough or be pregnant.

It's not the fact that his bedside manner isn't friendly, it's the fact that he was disrespectful towards me. He doesn't even need to be nice, just don't be a jerk. This ought to be pretty simple. Dr. Meredith Hayden at Powell Animal Hospital: Our Happy Bulldog Walked In, But Never Came Home…read more We are heartbroken and devastated to share our tragic experience with Dr. Meredith Hayden at Powell Animal Hospital (PAH) on August 20, 2025. Our beloved 10-year-old English Bulldog, Macy--our sweet companion who brought endless love into our lives--had a known history of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), including an elongated soft palate, as noted in her PAH records. We brought her in that day for mild symptoms--snoring and her bark sounding different. She was wagging her tail, full of energy and affection, when we walked into PAH with her. In our opinion, what followed was a tragic series of negligent decisions that shattered our world, leading to her rapid decline and the agonizing decision to euthanize her the next day at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center (UTVMC). Dr. Hayden recommended thoracic radiographs (chest x-rays) to check for possible aspiration pneumonia, which we agreed to. However, Macy was sedated with a cumulative dose of butorphanol (1.8 mL total, approximately 0.77 mg/kg) and dexmedetomidine (0.46 mL, 10 mcg/kg). According to veterinary guidelines from organizations like the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), based on our research, brachycephalic dogs like Macy require careful airway management during sedation, including readiness for intubation to prevent respiratory complications. In our strongly held opinion, the sedation protocol used here was excessive and inappropriate for her breed and condition, as it exceeded typical recommended ranges (butorphanol usually 0.1-0.4 mg/kg) and contributed to severe respiratory depression without adequate safeguards being put in place. Post-sedation, Macy's condition deteriorated so quickly it felt like a nightmare unfolding before our eyes. She became oxygen-dependent, with saturation levels only stable at 94-97% on supplemental oxygen. We had to carry her out on a stretcher less than two hours after arriving--she walked in full of life but left in critical distress, her spirit fading in ways that haunt us still. At UTVMC, Macy received intensive care, including intubation, but despite the best efforts of the vets at UTVMC, her condition worsened and we made the agonizing decision to euthanize her the next day on August 21, 2025, holding her as she slipped away forever. We filed a formal complaint with the Tennessee Department of Health's Veterinary Board (Complaint No. 202504054) against Dr. Hayden. They opened a file and forwarded it for investigation. After investigation, they closed the case on November 20, 2025, stating it "did not rise to the level of public discipline. Therefore, the complaint has been closed, but the record will remain on file in this office." While no formal action was taken, we interpret this phrasing as potentially leaving room for some internal handling (notice the key wording of "did not rise to the level of public discipline," with the record on file for future reference. We also pursued a claim with Dr. Hayden's insurer, Steadfast Insurance Company (Claim No. 9410761945), but they denied liability (shockingly) on January 16, 2026, asserting the care was appropriate based on their review. We are writing this review because we feel compelled to warn other pet owners, especially those with brachycephalic breeds, in hopes of sparing them this unbearable grief. In our opinion, Macy's death was preventable and resulted from inadequate risk management during an unnecessary sedation, and negligence on the part of Dr. Meredith Hayden. Dr. Hayden can rebut this review and our opinions in it, but what is clearly not up for dispute is that we walked into PAH with a beautiful and sweet dog that was full of life on 8/20/25. Less than 2 hours later we carried her out on a stretcher, raced her down to UTVMC on oxygen in the back of our car, and she never recovered--leaving a void in our hearts that nothing can fill. If you are considering this vet for a high-risk pet, please think twice and seek a second opinion. Our hearts are broken, and we would not wish this soul-crushing pain on anyone. In the not-so-distant past, our dog was spending time at daycare. In the early afternoon, I received a text message from an employee (not management), stating an employee attempted to physically redirect my dog from humping another, and my dog bit them. The message included, "I discussed the incident with management and your dog is no longer welcome at daycare". With such an accusation as this, I was astounded that Laura/Officer Manager chose not to call me and offer a face-to-face discussion. Rather, I received such an insensitive update from a staff member, via text. The next day, I spoke with Laura via telephone regarding Embassy's dog bite policy. From the onset, her lack of professionalism and disrespectful tone toward me, spoke volumes. She flippantly responded, "I don't have the policy at my fingertips, I cannot recite it verbatim, and policies frequently change". The following day, I spoke via telephone with Mandy Swartz/Operations Manager of Emory, Westland, and Lenoir City locations. I asked valid questions; what time did the alleged bite occur, who was bitten, was medical care rendered, were there any witnesses, what type of training did the employee have, how long have they been employed, what part of my dog did they physically grab to redirect him, did anyone review the daycare yard camera footage to get a clearer understanding of the incident? Of those inquires, Mandy Swartz told me; the employee chose to remain anonymous, no skin was broken, no blood or fluid noted, and no medical care was rendered. Further, she stated the daycare yard camera does not replay footage. Why have it in place then? None of my other concerns were answered/resolved. In an effort to substantiate my concerns, I sent a detailed email to Mandy Swartz. A week or so went by with no reply; I sent the email a second time. Again, she made the conscious decision to ignore me, the consumer. I called the Westland location and left messages twice with staff, and again, she lacked moral courage to reply. In my humble opinion, reviews are intended to provide honest feedback on businesses in which potential consumers may be interested in. Before my husband and I enrolled our dog at Embassy Veterinary Center, Emory Road, we read reviews, spoke with neighbors, and this business seemed reputable. Unbeknownst to me, several of the 5-star reviews submitted were by Embassy employees, to include the Operations Manager, Mandy Swartz. Additionally, management responded positively to the employees reviews. This practice is unethical, deceiving to the consumer, and unprofessional, to say the least! These individuals who hold a title of management, have absolutely zero integrity. The incredibly high staff turnover rate of the front desk/daycare employees is a true reflection of the inept management, at so many levels. My husband and I are extremely grateful to all the employees who cared for our dog. Each and every day he was under their care, they displayed compassion, integrity, and always a smile on their face. They have all left this place of employment, and we could not be happier for them. Lastly, there are too many other daycare/boarding businesses in the Knoxville area to choose from. Embassy's number one concern is money, not the consumer or employees! Thank you!
