Wanted to check out this pub based on Yelp's recommendations, but left disappointed. The decor looked awesome and seemed like a cozy place for a drink. I got in and sat at the bar. It wasn't too busy given that it was still in the afternoon. A couple bartenders passed me by and didn't even acknowledge or say hi. On particular, a girl bartender was filling ice right in front of me and didn't even look up to say hi. Then, I finally asked for the menu, to which a male bartender said which one? I answered and said drinks menu. He said he doesn't have drinks menu and it's just whatever you see at the bar, he said in a dull, unfriendly manner. Came here for lunch and was impressed. I LOVED the vibe of the place and the wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I got the fish pie and it was good, I wasnt blown away by it but it was solid. My husband and I had drinks and dinner at the Stagshead. We each received a medium-sized piece of tasty battered cod. I would have liked twice that amount of fish for dinner. The Hollandaise sauce was good. Our meals came with lots of chips (fried potatoes). I liked the small side salad with an oil and vinegar dressing that was light on the vinegar. I enjoyed a small bottle of Schweppes tonic water mixed with a small bottle of cranberry juice. My husband had a beer. When we visited around 5:00 pm, everyone else was drinking beer but not having food. This may be more of a drinking establishment than a restaurant. The menu was not huge. The interior is pretty with lots of stained glass windows and pretty wood carving. The service was great. When you are walking down Dame St, you come to a mosaic in the sidewalk advertising the Stagshead. You need to turn into the passageway and walk 75 yards. When you emerge from the passageway, you will be at the front door of the pub. There is seating both inside and outside. read more

Best bar in Dublin PERIOD (at least in my opinion). The best part about this place, the bartenders. Hands down, they were amazing. They knew their stuff and they talked with me and my fellow Americans for hours. We ended up having about 5-7 drinks here, ridiculous I know. But the vibe was right and we just rolled with it. I truly enjoyed my cocktail which I believe was a Black Russian, with a twist (a Guinness head). I think it's called an Irish Black Russian. One of the bartenders told us he knew I was American because of that drink and low and behold, everyone in the place was drinking some type of beer or Guinness LOLOL. Down an alley, but not more than a stone's throw away from the Temple Bar area of Dublin, is Stag's Head. I prefer the smaller crowd of Stag's Head to the hustle and bustle of Temple Bar (unless the mood for some good craic strikes). The old feel of the booths and woodwork, with stained glass windows takes you back in time. Prices are cheaper than Temple Bar area and the bartenders are informative and friendly. I had my first Irish coffee here years ago and it's still one of the best I've ever had. read more

Wandered in here for a quick beer. Went up to the second floor for the "beer parlor" which I think may have been a mistake. The area was luxurious and ringed by soft couches and a nicely dressed bartender/mixologist. After we had a seat, I went over to the bar to ask for a pint. Since there were Rockshore coasters littered all over every table in the parlor, I asked for that. Bartender said, "if you want that you'll have to get it down stairs". My pretension sense began to tingle. To his credit, the mixologist offered an alternative crisp beer. It cost around 6 euro. I finished it and left. While the view was nice, the beer was over priced and apparently served differently at different levels of the building. Go here for the view and service. Expect to pay for it though. read more

One of the top spots in Dublin to enjoy a pint of Guinness! The Stag's Head, located on Dame Court in the heart of the Dublin city center, is one of Dublin's best preserved Victorian pubs. The pub dates back to 1770, but was remodeled in 1895. The décor has not changed much since 1895 besides the addition of a television at the bar. You'll find mosaic marble-tiled floors, red Connemara marble tabletops, stained glass windows, and Victorian chandeliers at The Stag's Head. The carved mahogany wood paneling, whiskey barrels and the stag's head hanging over the bar gives this bar a "gentlemen's club" vibe. This lavishly decorated Victorian pub was one of James Joyce's watering holes. A variety of events are held in the Upstairs Parlour at The Stag's Head: * Comedy Crunch (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) * Live Traditional Irish Music (Friday and Saturday) * Candlelit Tales (3rd Monday of every month) My husband, sister, and I stopped in the Stag's Head on a Sunday night and the bar was packed, but we managed to find a table on the ground floor, near the bar. Great location in Dublin, down this small alley close to Grafton St. Walking in you just get this feel of a traditional older pub with a Victorian decor. This man was the rudest person I have ever met in my life. We came to Stag's Head to meet up with our friends on St. Patrick's Day. As we walked up, he immediately denied us saying that we looked too young without checking our I.D.s even though we offered several times to show him (we were all 20 and 21). We were trying to be nice and ask for a reason why he wouldn't let us in to meet our friends who were inside, but he kept flicking us away saying he wouldn't talk to us. After we moved to the side, several other young women came up to us with the same problem. What I don't understand is that our friends who are younger than us were let in not even an hour before. This behavior is ridiculous, especially for a major holiday in London. This was an ego trip for this man, and it is disgusting that he acted like this on a major holiday in Dublin. I hope he sees this review and realizes that his behavior was abominable. read more

The ambiance was great (legit Irish bar), but it was completely ruined by the fact that everyone would stand right outside the front door to smoke their cigarettes, which blew all the nasty smoke right into the bar (I.e. pointless). The thing I like most about this pub is the stained glass windows. The location is a long-thin room with a high ceiling. It is probably best if you are 2 people meeting for a drink. For groups of 4+ it is standing room only, and you'll be jostled a lot by passers by. Staff is friendly and on the ball. The pints are good, but they could be served a bit colder in my opinion. The patrons are decent folk, no riff-raff. Great set of pubs on this lane. It's like what Temple Bar would be like without being in Temple Bar. read more

This was one of our favorite spots in Dublin. Great food in a beautiful and cozy restaurant. We were seated in the back section by request, so comfy and private in that back corner. They're stained glass everywhere and pictures of Stags all across the walls. The back area even has a compartment for the kitchen to feed out food and was fun to see the orders fed out to staff. The booths in this back section were really comfortable. The entire restaurant is made of wood and there's dark cherry colors across the decor. Absolutely loved all of the stained glass windows within this restaurant. I ordered the fish and chips, was a generous serving. My husband ordered a burger and both of our fries were thickly cut and cooked to perfection. We enjoyed our meal immensely. The waitress was very nice and allowed us to take our time as we let our feet rest from all the walking around the city. No complaints at this place, a definite must visit. Came here a drink when my friend and I were in town a few weeks ago. We had just missed their dinner offerings, which was a bit of a shame since we were hoping to get some fries (or...chips, over on this side of the Atlantic), so we just opted for a couple of pints of Guinness instead. The pints were what you'd expect them to be, but the real reason to come here is because the bar itself is quite beautiful, with stained glass fixtures, an old wooden bar counter, and yes, a stag's head. I sat at one of their tables right across from the stag's head and ordered a cider and trio of dips. I stayed for maybe an hour or so and enjoyed the break from Dublin's hustle.
