Our favorite neighborhood bar in town. The bartenders here have been nothing short of friendly here and pay attention to take care of us. The vibes with the open garage to outdoor patio is also great. Great pool action and players come to hang out. We got 3 pinball machines, and 2 pool tables. Slots. Golfing game. Zoltar. What else do you want? Mario Kart 8? Yup they have it too. You got food selections, divey, but you also got a great selection to drink from and weekday specials. They have awesome Christmas decorations and fun vending machines in December too. $2 Hamms and deals every day of the week. If you want a bartender that's moderately good at their job or nice? Don't go here. I asked if they have any New England IPAs and the bartender said they don't have any and pointed to the wall where the list of taps was. There was a hazy right there on tap. Made me feel stupid and then she was like oh I actually don't know what that is. Hate to reward terrible customer service but I'll probably be back just because it's a fun atmosphere. read more

Some of the rudest bartenders I have ever met. They act so bothered whenever you order a drink and are disrespectful when you try to order something they don't carry. Don't order a Long Island or a vodka redbull here unless you want them to tell you they don't like people like you, whatever that means... another interesting rule they have is you can only pay as you go if you are using cash and refer you to their atm that charges a fee. There's a lot of good bars in the area so don't waste your time at this one. read more

In the before-times, The Standard was my go-to dive bar. With cheap drinks, friendly bartenders, TONS of games (pool, pinball, buck hunter, etc), a photo booth, a fun vending machine and good music. Now, we're in the age of Corona, and I don't spend a lot of time anywhere, let alone dive bars. But when I visited the other night it was clear that The Standard has created a space that is as safe as possible while still being true to their customer base and their wants and needs. This is the only bar I've seen so far where you can actually sit AT the bar. Separated into little sections by plexiglass. Plus there are plenty of other little cubby holes that are perfect for one or two guests. It's a barfly's dream! If you're there with a group there's still plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options. And while the games are gone, the photo booth, hipster vending machine, and music are still there. Oh, and they usually show pretty fun movies on the TVs. Last time I was there we caught up with the original Jumanji. Good times. I can't wait to get back to my - ahem - standard version of The Standard. But for doing the absolute most that you can possibly do during the pandemic, The Standard is a 5 star operation. read more

Went on my birthday they had a sign saying not open until 3 on their patio door and it was 3:10 so my friend and I decided to walk in and we were immediately met with hostility the bartender asked how did we get in? The Standard is quickly becoming one of my favorite bars in Portland. I had gone here a handful of times over the years, but I was never in the area too often to go to it regularly. Fast forward to March and I now work a couple blocks away. The Standard is now our go to after work bar. There's a different deal every day of the week with the highlights being $2 Tecate Tuesday and $1 Hamm Wednesday. Even if you don't go on one of those days, there's still deals to be had. Keystone Light, a beer I never though I'd be drinking, is only $1 all the time. Wells are still priced sub $5, a rarity in this economy. During the heatwave I decided to break my No Slushy rule and finally ordered one. I had adopted that rule after drinking far too many super sugary and not very boozy slushies at other bars around our city. These slushies are some of the best around and at $5, they're a great deal. I was pretty surprised how tipsy I got after just two and switched to beer. I'm a little embarrassed at how often my dinners consist of an order of tots, with the bartender's homemade hot sauce, a keystone light, and a well whiskey. Also this bar attracts a good amount of cyclists so there is almost always some bike porn parked out front. read more

It was a nice night to head out for the evening. My father took the kiddo for the night and my brother and I were meeting up with a buddy of his. The Standard was walking distance for us and only about two blocks away from where his buddy lives. I had been in Portland for a little over a day, and had only one local beer..... I know depressing right? We ended up at the bar and my brother was surprised it was so quiet. I guess the norm is that it gets packed there. One thing that was odd was that after 10pm you can't be out on the patio area because the bar is located within a community. There were a few video games including a Metallica pinball game and several people were around one of the buck hunting game. A few souls at the bar on their stools that all seemed to know each other along with the bartender and some music playing in the background. Beat up wooded tables and mismatched chairs added to the character of the place. They only had a few beers on tap but I settled on a local IPA from a place not too far away from where we were at (according to my brother). Good conversation, relaxed atmosphere and not loud. Dude. Duuuuuuude. No really, there are a lot of DUDES here. I'm not really sure why...but I haven't seen this much sausage in one place since I visited Munich. As a dude myself, this is a tad bit disconcerting but...I can hang out with dudes sometimes. Every once in a while I'll get stoked out of my mind and trade some high-fives and chest-bumps. So what's the place like? It's a dive bar yet it's spacious. It's a rather large hole in the proverbial wall. Speaking of which...this place is well-hidden. I didn't even know it existed until approximately 3 days ago. It's probably the closest bar to my house and it was nestled in its little nook like the Milenium Falcon on the Star Destroyer*BONUS* They have about 5-6 beers on tap. Common NW micros along with some swill (Hamm's...which is totally, like...the new PBR brah!) I saw a pretty epic argument between a guy and one of the 3 girls here. He was yelling, she was looking smug and LOVING IT. I was entertained, naturally. SIDE NOTE: for how divey this place is, the bathroom was in surprisingly good shape. read more

The Standard embodies everything great about dive bars; it is dark, smokey, comfortable, crowded, and cheap. Suuper cheap. I mean, I couldn't figure out if the butch barmaid was into me or bad at math, and as it turns out, she was neither. On one side of the room sits (if I remember correctly) three royal throne style booths that are reminiscent of the "flying tea cup" ride you might find at carnivals... crossed with Austin Powers favorite armchair. I can't imagine where The Standard picked them up, but they make for an intimate spot to huddle with your pals/boo. Elsewhere are lots of long tables that are great for large groups, and a large porch that I am eager to try out come summer. The space is large and smartly decorated, sporting a tattered American flag , retro light-box beer signs, demolished and microwaved CDs along the bar surface, shuffle board, and a nice juke box to boot. The only downside was that the air was blueish-purple from all of the smoke. I think The Standard could use a few additional/better smoke eaters. But hey, everywhere in Portland will be "smoke free" soon enough. In the meantime, I am going to bask in the dive bar-ry-ness of this wonderful dive bar. read more

This is what dives are supposed to be, in my mind at least: smoky (I know we've got some haters, but the only bar near my sleepy college town was called Lenora's, and it was small, and packed, and everyone blew smoke in your face), spacious, cheap, quiet, and hella fun. Yes, I just said "hella." Actually, I'd say that most dives are about a quarter of the size of the Standard, and probably cram in three times as many people. I was pleasantly surprised to find plenty of places to sit with a sizeable group. There were plenty of video-poker-type games, cheap drinks, clean bathrooms, a jukebox, and a pool table (only 50 cents per game!). Granted, everyone I played with (including myself) totally stank at pool (EDIT: Nevermind. Not true. Lauren G. ROCKED it [see photo], and I wasn't so bad, because at one point, I got two bolz in pockets in one shot.), it was major good times. Even if one of the guys spilled his beer on the felt. And even if I may or may not have sat on the pool table and attempted to hit the cue ball with the stick behind my back. I'm pretty sure at one point, I even made one of the balls fly. Even so, I will be back to hang out with friends, especially during the summer, when the glass garage door will be open and I can sit in the spacious courtyard in front. read more

Holy hot guys....geez. This place has a lot of really good looking single people. well maybe it was just me and that night? This place is happening. period. they got it all going on. I mean Photobooth. holla! Only $3. Can't beat a deal like that. The music box is rad. You can keep busy with big buck hunter, pool, pinball, or a bean bag toss. Its like an adult playground and a bar :) The outside patio is heated. Very nice for those cold winter days here in PDX. Jello shots for a dollar are a great go around for a group of friends. The drinks are all reasonably priced and the happy hour is amazing. They only have about 3 beers on tap. Tons of cocktails. If you want food and it is crowded you may have to wait up to 30 min for food so you may want to get a proper dinner somewhere else. The menu is also pretty minimal and pub style. A lot of my friends practically live here and I can see why because their "standard" is a double tall for super cheap. I can appreciate a place that pours a stiff drink for cheap and gives me great service. The bartenders are pretty kickass. The problem is...the space... I just cannot get over it and I cannot feel comfortable in the bar no matter what. Perhaps if I still was the type to go out and get drunk and not care where I was (or remember where I was for that matter) than this would be my hangout...but I just do not drink enough to make this place interesting. It is like someone took a warehouse, threw a few chairs and a pinball machine in it and called it art. I could not even move my chair comfortably because it scraped the floor causing the nails on a chalkboard effect. I can appreciate a good "dive" bar like the rest of my friends but this is not a good dive bar seriously. A good dive bar makes you want to hang out, drink cheap booze and play some cards or perhaps grab a hooker and do some blow (I don't judge how you might roll)... Hanging out here I feel a bit like a whore in church...awkward. I do not smoke myself but most of my friends do so we go outside and this bar is in a neighborhood with very cranky neighbors who hate the fact they live next to a bar. So they complain nonstop. The photo and the description for the standards specialty cocktail drink sounded delicious! Jim beam and ginger beer slushee topped with a lime Jell-O shot and pop rocks...yum!!! However, this was not the case. It tasted like Jim beam mixed with ice in a blender, nothing else. If I was alcoholic this would be ideal. Don't get me wrong you'll get shit faced for $5 so there's that This is a DIVE BAR. If you go in with that expectation you won't be that disappointed. It's dingy, run down and there's really nothing fancy. However, there are a ton of pinball machines, some arcade machines, pool tables and an open atmosphere. The bartender tonight was so rude and had the most disgusting attitude she claimed her name is Jessica and said she was the manager. From the time walking in the bar she was already rude and claim this to be her personality. After I told the bartender me and my friend we wanted a Long Island she took my card and paid for it I told her to close my card out I don't like tipping on my card I tip in cash. Before I can even say anything to her she looked at me sarcastically and said thanks. I felt the bartender was pissed off so I went up to her calmly and said by the way I like to tip in cash because a few times bartenders added they're own tip she then said very rudely "who" I said downtown she said very rude "well this ain't downtown" I said ok well it's my first time here. After that I asked for my money back because I did not like her service she refused to give me my money "told me this is her bar and this ain't target or apples bees" then went to talk about us to her other customers. When I told her I will report her to the boss she laughed very hard and sarcastically and said "I will tell him" I truly felt this was beyond disrespectful and this seemed almost racist. (We're two black young ladies) please save your money and don't go to this bar. Also the drinks tasted very sour. Prior to today, The Standard has been one of my favorite bars. Their prices are good, the space is great, and the bartenders are usually awesome. However, today around 6:15 I was treated with subtle yet distinct racism from a bartender I've never seen before. It was humiliating. I was there with two friends, and I ordered a michelada, which is a Mexican drink with beer, tomato juice, and peppers and spices. I've seen it on Portland menus around town so I thought I'd see if they have it. I am Mexican-American. He rolled his eyes, looked at me patronizingly and said, "You mean red beer." He wasn't asking a question, he wasn't confused, he was clearly TELLING me the "right" way to say it. My white friend whispered sarcastically in response "cuz we're in America!", which is the vibe we got. Confused, I said "If you don't make them here I can order something else" and he said "It's a RED beer." He shook his head as he poured the other drinks, clearly irritated, and I ordered a Tecate instead to end the attitude he was giving me. The message was clear--stop speaking Spanish here. A few minutes later, he came outside and confrontationally asked if something was wrong. He was concerned about the tip he missed on a $5 tab (we didn't tip because he was so disrespectful). His demeanor was aggressive. I said he acted in a racist manner and I didn't want to talk to him anymore. He left flustered and we left without finishing our drinks. I expect to meet a certain amount of rudeness/curtness from service workers because I know you can't be "on" all the time. It's hard serving customers all day, and I understand that. We're all human. However, I've never been treated so disrespectfully on the basis of language/culture in my own country. I'd absolutely understand if he didn't know the drink, but he understood my Spanish enough to "correct" me with his palatably American take on a drink that has a name--michelada. It'd be like insisting I call carnitas "pulled pork" or ramen "noodle soup"--I could do it, but it unnecessarily strips the thing of its cultural significance and meaning. I know that the demographics of Oregon are changing and that that can lead to confusion, but in this instance the bartender was condescending, rude, and aggressive. I hope the management at The Standard will address this type of behavior in the future. In the meantime I will be going to bars where the bartenders ears aren't sensitive to the sound of foreign languages. read more

We were all having a great time until a waitress had to hear our one concern. We had ordered a plate of fries and chicken strips but they never came, sad face. We asked her after a few minutes and she replied, "well maybe you should try harder next time" followed by a slamming of the glasses on our table as she collected them. This bar is cool and low key enough to be a fun experience. However, if you're looking for a true experience in terms of passion and service towards you as a consumer it's a total let down. To put it nicely this was the unpleasant woman we've ever encountered in customer service. She should get demoted and if I knew her name I'd let the whole world know. The bartender (big woman) demanded a tip before she even finished handing us the beers. When we sat down everyone in the bar including the staff looked at us like we were unwelcome. I'm not sure if it was racism (I'm Hispanic and my boyfriend is Mexican/white) or just because this seems like locals don't like anyone coming into this bar that isn't from there, but I've never felt more uncomfortable in my entire life. I hope this place closes down for how awful they are to people. With all the other 1 star reviews I really hope someone is able to shut them down. read more

Now, it's not unhealthy to be as excited about a new bar I love as I would be about say, a new boyfriend or something, right? Because I just really like it. I feel confident that we'll have a very fruitful relationship. Surely we'll have our ups and downs, but the Standard just happens to have all the amenities I seek out in a bar. It's spacious, but not too big. It's dim but not too dark. There's 70's beer paraphernalia instead of shitty bar art (thankyoujesus). There's a ton of seating and I, also, can't imagine where they acquired all the furniture. It's pretty killer. The bartender was super nice and in addition to pouring me a giant tumbler of whiskey (i mean it, it took me AT LEAST 35 minutes to drink it) for cheap, she introduced herself to me and also gave us the inside scoop on playing the bumper-style shuffleboard there. Also, while I didn't get a good look at the jukebox, there WAS some Snoop Dogg, which I feel pretty good about. Now, where others typically point out the smokey factor of a bar, I tend to not care, but dang, bar is SMOKEY, y'all. I still don't really care, but you might. Anyway, it's a great bar. The impressive jukebox at The Standard features a Kenny Rogers album that includes "Lady," which may have been my introduction as a young music-video watcher to my now beloved genre of heartfelt shmaltz. So if anyone were to drop the appropriate amount of change into the machine and play that gem, it would probably cause me to react in one of a few ways: 1) Chain-smoking pensively until my voice sounds like a cross between The Gambler himself and Bea Arthur. 2) Acting out some of the finest country songs in the repertoire by drinking cheap wine and whiskey like a Dartmouth pledge, going home with the nearest kind-talking stranger, and blaming said stranger for the ugliness of our children for the rest of our booze-fueled lives together. 3) A little from Column A and a little from Column B. The weird thing is that you might end up doing any of those things without Kenny Rogers because you're at The Standard. And if that is not proof of a hard-working dive bar, then I hereby relinquish my right to burst into "Islands in the Stream" at the drop of a hat. read more

We were out the day after New Year's and a lot of places seem to be closed or closed early. Anyhow, we stumbled into The Standard after a few failed attempts at finding a simple, easy going place to eat and drink in the area. The Standard ended up being the low-key oasis that we needed before heading back to Seattle. This place is so great. The space is industrial yet approachable with some pretty fun additions (jukebox, games, photo booth). Service was prompt, straight forward, and not overbearing which is what I prefer in a dive. Food was solid. The grilled cheese and tomato soup was delicious and a step above what one would expect from a dive. Great tap selection and seasonal cocktail options. It was freezing out and the hot buttered rum hit the damn spot. The best part is it seems like they priced their drinks so that everyone can have a good time. Being from expensive ass Seattle, the prices at The Standard are so affordable that it makes me want to cry. I really hope Portlanders appreciate this spot because it is truly a neighborhood gem of a bar. read more

Some dive bars are labeled dive bars but are actually manufactured dive bars. I assure you, nothing here is manufactured. This place is a dive and I mean that in the nicest way possible. I enjoyed it. This place is not the cleanest or most up kept. I would even describe it as a bit seedy, and I like that. Pool tables, no pretentiousness, communal benches. They have lots of beers on tap. Most of which are on the hoppy side, as most of the beer spots in Portland are. All in all, it's a swell watering hole. read more

The upholstery one some (ok, many) of the seats could use a little TLC but that adds to its charm, right? Beer is cheap. Happy hour is cheap. They have frozen alcoholic beverages. I love that. It's a great place to meet up with friends. There are a few pinball and arcade games. A nice photo booth. Some VP for you gamblers and of course, pac man. Bathroom is next to the bar. God, I love The Standard. First of all, let's get this out of the way: Photobooth Photobooth Photobooth. They have a photobooth. So, obviously, I already love it. FYI: it's cash only ($3!) and has a rad plaid background. Not that you need any other reason to go to The Standard, but they also have daily drink specials. Monday is fantastic-- $3 Mono. Their well vodka--the classy Hood River Vodka--is $2.50, but trust me: springing for the extra .50 cents is worth the lack of hangover. The food is nothing special--the bartender is the cook, and there are options like waffles fries and pretzels. Nothing super vegan-friendly (what happened to their hummus with blue corn chips?! I loved those), but who really cares. Not me. If you're starving after drinking too many $2 Hamms, you can always head over and get a take out vegan burrito from Ole Ole. The staff doesn't mind. In addition to the photobooth and rockin' drink specials, there's also a rad jukebox. I love interactive music selections in bars. Then I can impose my taste in music on everyone in the bar. Sam Cooke, Moody Blues, Cat Stevens.... I know no shame when it comes to setting the mood with un-bar-friendly tunes. Make no mistake; this place is a dive. I almost feel bad about writing this review seeing as how I've only stepped maybe 2 feet inside. Walking up to the building, you can see all the smoke inside. Seemed a little scary at first and then you step inside only to have your lungs collapse. I started wheezing and coughing so bad that I had to walk right back out of there. Needless to say, I felt like I couldn't inhale for a good 30 minutes. At least there is outdoor seating but too bad we were there at night and it was chilly. If I ever go back it will be to sit outside or when the smoking ban happens. read more
