I moved into the area recently and popped into Houndogs for a small bite to eat. I ordered a dram of Glenfiddich 12 year, a Small Chicken Strips (served with fries) and a HUB brewery red ale for after the meal. Understand that I can't speak for their whole menu. The outside looks like a dive bar but the inside is like a cozy tavern or pub. The Glenfiddich was priced quite low (compared to other restaurants I've frequented) and the dram was poured generously. Have no illusions, it is bar food, but the chicken strips were excellent, cheap, and huge (more like deep fried entire chicken breast). The fries seemed like they were actually cut from potatoes (thicker cut and not unnaturally crispy like McDonald's). The red ale was a HUB standard, so quite good. The bar has a fenced patio so you can enjoy a drink outside and smoke (if that's your thing) which cannot be said of a lot of bars nowadays. Very Interesting happy hour program: It starts at 8am and every 2 hours or so a different kind of drink is put on special. All in all a nice neighborhood tavern with really, really friendly regulars and staff. read more

Tonight was awful. I have loved this place since Cruz. I stop in randomly. Tonight I was rubbed down (let me edit. He fully groped my butt multiple times and then my boobs... pretending it was a joke and making rude comments the whole time) by a patron on multiple occasions while he was rude to everyone around him. I finally spoke up. He didn't like that so he got hostile. Unfortunately even the bartender who saw me get touched inappropriately AND listened to the verbal harassment decided to side with the... person that touched me. So I was forced to call the police. I told the police to look up the camera. Hopefully this will be solved. Really sad. This place was wonderful when Cruz was here and I have only spoken their praises. Well, used to like coming here since food is good. Excellent service has been replaced with a pissy rude blonde. Today, ordered 2 cheeseburgers and she slammed our drinks on the bar, cursing while throwing two burgers on the grill without washing her hands. Threw a few fries in the fryer still cussing. The place was slow, 4 people at the bar including hubby an I. This is the 3rd time here and every time she has a tantrum if she has to cook a burger or hot dog. When it's time to check out, all of a sudden she comes by, acting all nice. Tip time nice. Get your act together and be civil to customers and you might make good tips. To the owners, hire a cook in addition to a bartender if you want to double your income. read more

Houndogs (not Hound Dogs) Bar and Grill is by far and absolutely a place I have been to in a big way.

Probably a 2.5 to be honest. But I love a dive bar that doesn't try to be anything fancy so I'm rounding up. Don't expect gourmet food or anything fancy. It's mostly burgers and items from a freezer into a fryer. I only ordered the mozzarella sticks and they were great super hot right out of the fryer... exactly what they should be (minus the fact the bartender spilled tons of ranch in the basket and I hate ranch dressing). Also great, blazers game was playing with sound. Awesome! We actually ended up here because the bar we went to which advertises airing the game was airing it, but also hosting trivia. Totally not what we were looking for. Here's where it lost it for me. Bartender didn't know how to make the drink I ordered (vodka press). It's ok, not everyone knows every drink... it never bothers me if someone asks, maybe they know and just need a reminder. But what i got was a super flat vodka soda water with a lemon wedge. From the looks of the clientele I might be in the minority but my drink was way too strong and my friends said the same. The price was great.... but I only ordered one drink because By halftime I felt not able to drive and needed to sober up to be able to drive home after the game. I'm pretty sure my drink was 6-7$... upgraded to kettle one... and at least had twice the vodka it needed so super cheap. For some this would make it a 5 Star but I'm out of my 20's now and drinks with friends no longer means getting wasted. Don't expect much service. The bar is small so it's lightly staffed and the bartender didn't really have the time to ask about additional drinks or food. That's not a big deal to me as I'm capable of going up to the bar but might be for some people. This was a Tuesday so I imagine it's staffed more on peak nights. read more

This is my second time into this establishment, I love this place! Friendly staff, this time I had their chicken sandwich, was absolutely delicious probably one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had. My other half had the hamburger, charbroil and said it was delicious as well both of the sandwiches came with bacon... Can't go wrong with the bacon they have one pinball machine, a few video poker machines, and outdoor seating. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

If you are looking for a dive bar in Portland that covers all the bases this is the place. The hamburger special 2-5 is five bucks includes a beer and chips and for $0. 50 more the upgrade your beer to a micro. I bought it , it was great. Bartender was funny he was fast he was very efficient the hamburgers were awesome, the french fries were actually fresh potato not frozen french fries. This place is awesome. We came here on a whim. The drinks were good. Cheap too which doesn't hurt the pocketbook at all. We also met a couple of the regulars and one in particular was such a sweetheart. It's a little chihuahua mix I think and so darn cute. He's like the official greeter when he's there with his human mama who was also pretty nice. He even sits on the stool and waits patiently for treats and petting. Haven't tried the food but will give it a whirl next time should we happen upon this place again. read more

Hounddogs is as real as it gets. I love this place. For instance, one time I was walking by and I thought I was being cat-called, and I turned around and asked what the question was. I'm Queer as Folk, so when someone said "you go, Girl!" I thought it was a bad thing. Actually, this gentleman intended to encourage my queerness, my bisexuality. my... coming out. I was walking down the street, carrying some beer, wearing a skirt, and that guy actually helped my self-conficence. I have to say, Hound Dog's attracts really good people, and propels really good people just the same. I highly recommend this bar to everyone, including actual Dogs. read more

Awesome burgers with superrrr fresh tasting tomato slices - seriously I may need to ask where they get their tomatoes from. Great, toasted bun. The fries were not as crispy as I tend to like, but who really needs fries anyway when your burger is insanely good? Had a well drink with soda water which tasted a little flat. Although soda water isn't really anyone's first choice is it? So I can't really hold that against them. The beer I had later tasted great! Getting a second round of drinks was a little tough. There was a line at the bar waiting for someone to get a payout from one of the machines and only one (very nice!) person working, but it wasn't a big deal. I imagine keeping staffing light is part of what keeps costs down, and Houndog's was definitely a great value! We look forward to visiting again! read more

I have been going to "Hound dogs" ever since they first opened and have had fun every time I went. It is basically a neighborhood place where an older clientele hang out during the day and early evenings then turns more to the Reed Collage style late night. I know all the employees on a first name bases and find them all very hard working and courteous people trying to make everyone feel welcome. The menu is limited but what they serve has never been disappointing. My personal favorite is the hamburger with fresh cut fries. Usually my wife and I split an entree because the portions are so large. They have great prices on both food and drinks. Speaking of drinks, you will never be disappointed in the measuring. I may not be a spring chicken anymore but I don't consider myself old ether, but who does? Anyway just because someone is a little older than you does not mean that they are not fun. I like to sit at the bar and talk to people and believe me some of the folks that patronize "Hound dog "are interesting, funny, and and a pleasure to converse with. Based on the good reviews (and my need for a cheap/good burger and beer), tried the Houndog tonight. I've driven by a million times and it has always looked interesting, like an old Portland friend. Now, I know it will be. Cheeseburger was great, on a big toasty bun. I have to admit it tasted like burgers I used to get at Portland taverns 20+ years ago. My husband had a fabulous dog with an incredible array of toppings (New Orleans style). I actually got a buzz from an ordinary well drink and he had two good beers. All for a reasonable price, served by a friendly, efficient bartendress, Casey. So, A+ for service, price and quality. So, glad to find you, Houndog, and not too far away. read more

I've been here a few times, the staff and customers are the best! I didn't eat today, but the burgers and fries are the best in the Brooklyn neighborhood! Casey the bartender knows what everyone wants and provides a great atmosphere with her jokes and witty comebacks. The drinks are cheap, there is a rotating happy hour throughout the day and there are tasty daily food specials. I always feel comfortable here and look forward to returning. The staff, especially Casey remember birthdays and celebrate important occasions. Sunday taco night is a great way to fill the belly without breaking the bank. Horrible establishment! Went there yesterday and when we walked in the instant vibe was kind of "ugh" but my boyfriend and I were so hungry that we decided to give the menu a shot despite the smokey haze, lack of food options and general dismal vibe. We ordered two Guiness and I decided to order try the crispy chicken sandwich. The kitchen consists of a fryer behind the bar which after I ordered I noticed was smoking; hence the haze. While watching the bartender move about the area and start preparing my food, I notice she's eating and handling my food. I watched it continue for several minutes before I just couldn't take it anymore and told her to forget about the sandwich. She looked at me like I was crazy, argued she had washed her hands (despite eating and handling food before and after said hand washing) and tried to justify her actions that it was only lettuce she had been eating.... I have never seen such blatant disregard for health codes and proper food preparation/handling. We will NEVER go back to this dump!!!!!!!! Gross! read more

I want to love Houndogs but I'm struggling lately. I've been a longtime patron since it opened years ago. Up until about 6 months ago, the food was dependable if uninspired, the beer cheap and the atmosphere and bartenders super friendly. The beer's still cheap and the bartenders friendly, but I don't know what's happened to the food..... now at least half of the menu is simply unavailable... We haven't been able to order a hot dog in several months despite it being called Houndogs and despite the items remaining on the menu. We love to go out for a bite to eat and a couple of (or many) beers. Unless I'm exhausted (the bar is 1 block away), I just can't muster the desire to go there if we're interested in dinner... Houndogs.. please listen and do something about this - you're about to lose longtime, loyal customers :( read more
