This climbing gym was converted from an old theater in downtown San Jose. Very cool! You can find small details remaining from the previous theater. Smaller location, but we enjoyed coming here very much. They do have the top roping here, a huge plus. Street parking only, but we had no issues parking on the same block the two times we went. We look forward to visiting again in the future when we are in the Bay Area!

    Squat racks...minimal bumper plates.

This review is only for the *fitness* portion of "The Studio," not the climbing portion. I've visited nine of Touchstone's fourteen climbing gyms around the state, and while The Studio definitely embodies many of Touchstone's great qualities, it also falls short in some respects. Unlike many of Touchstone's other gyms, the fitness section at The Studio definitely feels like an afterthought. There's definitely enough here to get a workout in, but there's also many things that you won't be able to do. The Studio has a full range of dumbells, two squat racks, multiple benches, barbells, a few kettlebells, a few cable machines, and some cardio machines. The most glaring omissions are bumper plates (they have a couple 10lb bumper plates, but don't expect to be able to deadlift or olympic lift here), as well as a lifting platform. The space is also fairly small and I can see it getting really crowded during nights and weekends. Around the rest of the gym, there's clean bathrooms with lockers and showers, all the drinks and snacks you would expect to find at a gym like this, and a helpful staff.

Great facility. There are so many options for top roping. They also have a gym. And their bouldering section was great too. Their labeling is very easy to understand. They also have shoes and chalk bags for rent. Their restrooms have showers and lockers which is also so helpful. Beautiful climbing gym overall.

Walls here are slippery, no frictions heh

My first time visiting the Studio because I go to Movement, and don't live close by, and don't want to go through the hassle of finding parking around the area. But the gym itself is cute and clean and all around really enjoyable. I went on a weekday morning, and it was not crowded at all. Just a couple of people climbing, and route setters were working on the roof area, which is likely a third of the boulders available, but not a problem for me as I hate roofs. Lol. Route settings are interesting, even for some V2s they made it fun to do. They list out the muscle group that you will use when climbing a problem, such as biceps, which is super informative. I see a worker vacuums the mat, and I never seen this happened at Movement gyms. Not sure if it's just the timing of cleaning. Note that the walls here are low friction walls! I was surprised by it, getting used to the sand paper like walls at Movement. It's all personal preference and it's interesting to read online about the two different types of walls and how people like them. I personally like sand paper walls, but I can tolerate low friction walls if that helps me with my footwork. Workers are very friendly. Front desk guy made me feel like home as we share the same birth month and day.

A great spot for climbing nestled into the heart of DTSJ -- this spot has a fun marquee at the entrance, and the space is set up in a really cool way! It had been a while since I'd been bouldering, but I came by and ended up having a really fun Sunday morning. The day pass and rental together came out at just shy of $35, so it was a fair price given that we stayed for a few hours. Parking here could be a bit of a headache, given that it's downtown, but we were able to find a spot right in front since we got there early in the day. The have a fair number of bouldering walls and the routes are varied with different types of climbs and marketing by difficulty. I wish they were sorted by color, but they were still super easy to identify on the walls. It wasn't crazy busy on a Sunday, which meant that I got to try a lot more of the routes. The real star of the show was the top rope walls! We got too tired before we switched over, but will definitely be returning to try those out. They have all of the harness and belay equipment, as well. There are so many to try, and I'll be back next time I'm in SJ!

have visited it once for an introduction class and some practice afterwards, and loved it a lot! I've never done climbing before but the people who work there are very helpful. the gear is included in the price of the ticket but you can bring your own if you have it. also don't forget chalk!

I just wanted to give an updated review for The Studio. After almost three years since my initial review, The Studio still remains 5/5 stars :) They have made renovations to the flooring, added great classes, and continue to have great staff. I come about 1-3x/week, usually once on the weekend and 1-2 times during the week after work. Workday evenings continue to be the busiest but everyone is so friendly and everyone has great climbing manners. I prefer climbing on the weekends since it is a little emptier in the bouldering area. The Studio changes their climbing routes at a perfect frequency, giving us long enough time to work on projects while preventing us from getting bored from the same routes. I primarily boulder but occasionally top rope. Both areas have new squishy flooring which is fantastic and a good variety of routes to challenge the new climbers as well as the seasoned ones. The staff is great, always greeting us when we enter and leave. They give great tips if they happen to be walking around the bouldering section while we are stuck on something. They also validate 2 hours of parking at the Convention Center garage:)

Local places they have climbing walls for beginners and advance between 25 to 45 feet high I have yoga studios I have a ton of workout equipment so not only can you do your climbing but you could also go to work out and relaxation meditation. They offer guides and they also offer group sessions if you want to do teambuilding

Really solid climbing gym in the heart of San Jose. I like how the top roping and bouldering sections are completely separate from each other. There are group classes and workout machines as well (treadmills, stairs, elliptical, etc). The bouldering area where we spent most of our time is a little small, but very worthwhile. For a beginner like myself I really appreciated the volume of V0s and V1s. We spent 2 hours trying to conquer their boulders. It's $25 for drop in and an additional $4 for shoe rental. Parking is really difficult in this area, in which we ended up paying $6/hour for the parking lot behind the gym.

I like this gym, it's a bit more like a club than purely a gym, but I don't really use the club…read morefacilities so the gym part is what I'm reviewing here. No tennis, no pool, no snack bar. Anyway, there are three key things for me when it comes to a gym. First is cleanliness, second is shower facilities, third is equipment. AVAC is a relatively small gym and I tend to go at off hours. This means not many people, so thankfully it's very clean inside. If you think about a 24 Hour Fitness or similar, they have hundreds of people constantly working out, there's no way to uphold hygiene standards. AVAC, despite being small, has frequent cleanings happening, which is nice. The showers at AVAC are... okay. On the plus side, they provide towels, which is a dealbreaker for me. Who wants to bring their own towel to a gym? So that's a big convenience factor. The towels have been bleached and washed to the point they are marginally more absorbent than copy paper and quite rough, but I guess a towel is a towel. The showers themselves are workable but not ideal. Communal in nature, which I personally find awkward, but going at off hours at least allows me to have them to myself or only 1-2 others at most. If it was packed I'd probably wait, it's just too weird. The shampoo and body wash are not very high quality, kind of reminds me of what you'd get at a cheap motel. But again, at least it's there. I also don't want to cart my own soap around. For the gym's size, the equipment variety and quantity is good. I've never not been able to get a treadmill, I've always been able to get the free weights I want, and there are usually benches available. The only thing in short supplies are squat racks, of which there are two, and space for deadlifts, which is basically also two. I would say the gym's clientele leans towards... not people doing those types of exercise. So I haven't typically had to wait, but again I also don't go at peak hours. There are also tons of machines, if you're the type of person who thinks isolation exercises are good. Better than nothing I suppose, but that's just me. AVAC offers a lot of free classes, of which I've taken none. They also have a snack bar, which I've never used. There's also a pool (not the swim school pool which is like 2.5' high) and a kiddie pool outside, neither of which I've been in. And there are tennis courts and pickleball and some outdoor fitness area, which, you guessed it, I have never been to. I wouldn't say AVAC is a destination gym the way Bay Clubs are, but if you're closeby it's probably the best one around. They also have plenty of parking in back in two lots.

My main issue with this facility is a specific group of members that have started to come in. There is a large group of people who come in to work with a husband/wife team of independent trainers. The trainers are rude and take up tons of equipment that they do not actively use- like they are trying to reserve it for their future use. When you ask them if you can work in or if they are using something they are rude and look at you like you are insane for even talking to them. This group of people act like they are the only people in the gym and completely lack awareness and any etiquette. They leave weights on machines, don't wipe anything down, and leave huge messes in the restrooms. My other issue is the amount of recording that they do- the gym has now banned the use of free standing tripods (great) but now they are using other pieces of equipment to prop their phones up on and record their workouts. On top of that- there is no regard or awareness for someone in the back of their video. I know that I have been in the back of their recordings, which I do not want to be, and have asked them multiple times to move their phones or not record and they are just rude about it and start talking crap. I have taken these issues to the front desk staff and management. No one does anything about it. I brought it up to the girl at the front desk this past weekend and she basically told me that because they are bringing in so much business they can do what they want. If that is the case then this business clearly does not value all of its members equally.

Imagine paying $175/month ($6/day) seem not too much for an individual to breakdown and think about, slowly more people will sign up mainly for working out purposes than other relaxing activities, the GYM sooner or later will be busy. I've visited Villasport and Citisport in both the same hours during different times of the day, and the crowds are not much different. But for the price it is. Paying $175 monthly and must wait for machines to break the workout momentum is pretty sad and upsetting, innit? Then 10pm its already closed... weekends are 2pm... Overall I'd personally think $75/month is fair. For $175/month, hours should be extended, and equipment should be more balanced. The way I see this fitness is built was to target older wealthy people 45+ years old. However, as I come here I see more of the younger ones than the older ones.

I've been a member of this club for around three years now and it's been a great place to train…read more The staff are very welcoming, and the cleanliness of the gym makes it a very welcoming place. However, I am not a big fan of some of the gym machines as some aren't very comfortable to use. For example, the excess amount of Hoist machines could possibly be replaced by other machines from other companies. In other gyms I have visited, the other machines from companies like Life Fitness have been a favorite for me and at times I see myself going to these gyms to get a workout that is more appealing for me. Another thing I have noticed is that some of the cardio machines almost never see use and could possibly be replaced by other machines. This is an amazing gym overall but it could definitely see some improvement. From other people I have spoken to they all noticed the big price increases on memberships and guest passes, and I think it would be fitting to see some equipment upgrades to go along with the increased prices.

Most of the staff are pleasant, especially the front desk team. They greet you when you walk in, which makes me feel welcome. That's such a nice way to start the day. I personally haven't used the steam or dry sauna since COVID. I've heard people overuse the area & that's not cool. Many good things changed like members also don't reserve spots the way they used to. And I rarely see or hear ladies talking loudly on their phones in the locker room these days, which is a really good thing. I just want to say that Plex is clearly working with its members. Following rules, regulations, and basic etiquette isn't always easy for everyone, so better communication makes a big difference. Of course that's not easy either. A big thank you to the cleaning team. All work you do keeping the gym clean & clean towels!

This past Tuesday, we decided to drop in to watch a World Cup soccer match, and to our surprise, the place was packed! I approached Alex to ask if there was any available seating, and he went above and beyond to assist us. Not only did he help us find a spot, but he also checked in on us throughout the evening to ensure we were enjoying ourselves. What really stood out was how Alex treated everyone around him. He was constantly walking around, checking on guests and making sure everything was running smoothly. Thanks to his exceptional service, we had a fantastic time! A huge thank you to Alex and the entire team at The Plex for creating such a welcoming atmosphere. We can't wait to come back!

I originally decided to work with him because my neighbor highly recommended him, and I'm so glad I did. Jimmy is both friendly and professional, and he creates a very comfortable and supportive environment. Every session feels personalized -- I usually just show up, and he already has a plan based on my progress and energy level that day. He always checks with me before increasing weights and carefully tracks my progress so we can continue improving safely over time. I also appreciate that he mixes up the exercises, machines, and workout styles so the sessions never feel repetitive or boring. What stood out to me the most was how patient and encouraging he was, especially during my first few sessions when I was tired, emotional, and honestly a little grumpy postpartum. He was always kind, understanding, and motivating. Now I feel much stronger, more energized, and more confident physically and mentally. I'm truly grateful for Jimmy's support and guidance throughout my postpartum recovery.

I have never seen anyone cleaning here, especially not the bathroom. They literally aren't fixing anything. Beyond cleanliness, this 24 is an absolute joke. 70% of the treadmills don't work, every 4th machine or bench on the floor doesn't work. 100% of the equipment has worn out leather, creaks, rattles, wobbles. It's like this gym has literally not been serviced since it opened its doors for the first time. Save yourself the time and literally do not intentionally drive yourself to this 24. What an absolute joke.
