I had a horrible experience at the Summer House. I have never post a review but this experience coupled with no refund warrants it. Atmosphere: Outdoor patio style dining for dinner. We had a reservation. We were shown to a wet table and chairs (it had rained earlier). The staff did not help us. We had to look for someone and ask for paper napkins. We had to move ourselves to another opened table. At least the plastic table and chairs were easy to dry. Later, it began to rain. We got wet and tried to move our table underneath the tent for shelter. Again none of the staff helped us. They actually laughed at us... other diners helped us. We moved ourselves to another table. Our appetizers and drinks remained out in the rain. No staff offered to help and we had to ask for replacement dinnerware. Next, the Christmas style lighting that lines the outdoor tent flickered and blinked off and on before finally going out. This is a primary source of light. We were basically sitting in the dark for dinner. Food: All menu items were $30-$50 per plate. My friend received a dried out burger on a stale roll with cold french fries. I ordered a Lobster roll. It was dry, tasteless and not really edible. Another friend received a steak that was cooked incorrectly. When we complained, they offered to give us new meals. We had waited so long we just wanted to leave. Accountability: We called to report our experience. We were told meals would be refunded. It has Been a month, this has not happened. We were offered a repeat visit. We were visiting and could not come back. The whole experience was so disappointing as I believe this was once a beautiful place to visit. All of my past meals here have been disappointing, yet I went back hoping that the food/service had somehow miraculously improved. Nope, it hasn't, and in fact it's gotten worse. I went for lunch yesterday, and the tables by the water were unavailable because they were setting up for a wedding. Despite having made a reservation for a waterside table, we were seated near the bar. They seem to be understaffed, so the service is slow, and some servers are rude. The food is average at best, and very overpriced. I'm not one to complain about money, if the food/view/service/scene (whatever you're going for) is worth it. But the Summer House's prices are really a slap in the face. For example, an overcooked $32 plain cheeseburger and a $35 bland lobster cobb salad. I didn't realize it was possible to mess up something as simple as a lobster salad, but they managed to. The lemon vinegarette didn't complement the salad, the lobster had an unpleasant texture, and the shredded lettuce wasn't fresh. Oh, and the salad lacked flavor overall. Needless to say, I won't be returning anytime soon. For an equally pricey, but much more delicious experience, with a superior view and friendlier service, go to Toppers at the Wauwinet. read more

Very disappointing. We called to make a reservation and spoke with the owner of the place. We asked to be seated inside in the dining room. The owner never once thought to mention the kitchen burned down and the dining room doesn't exist nor is the regular restaurant even open. The owner totally went along with our request. We sat outside on the patio froze our asses off for terrible food that came out COLD. Ordered soup which was ice cold. We were a large party of 10, not one of us had hot meals. The staff were rude and couldn't be bothered. Incredibly slow service. Inedible and overall terrible experience. This place rapes you for your money. read more

I had a lovely afternoon at The Summer House, and my burger was absolutely delicious! My only qualm was that they did mess up the customizations I had made to my burger. I ordered it with ONLY lettuce and NO tomato & onion. However, when the burger came, there was NO lettuce and ONLY tomato & onion. The summer house food is digesting. I eat lobster weekly and I am 100% their lobster meat is fake. We booked an inn through them to stay in last month and showed up on Nantucket only to find out they had sold the inn and never refunded us or told us. After hours of back and forth they refunded us only to charge us again and claim we crashed a wedding and harassed them. (There was no wedding and they did not offer credits for future stay as they had claimed. Not that we would ever want to stay in such a poorly run business). I don't suggested eating or staying there and heard terrible things about them from Nantucket locals. They'll probably sell the place or go out of business soon. read more

The Summer House is TERRIBLE. It is nothing like the photos on their website. I called the Nantucket Dept of Health who issued them a letter with violations. Do not stay here under any circumstances. It's disgustingly dirty and in dire need of renovations. There is NO service. read more

Absolutely TERRIBLE. I don't think anybody works at this hotel. Upon check in nobody was to be found for hours! The room was dirty when we were finally let in (by a maid). I paid for a room with a jacuzzi which does not work. There is no service whatsoever...I walked into the hotel and shouted hello! To no avail. I wouldn't tell my worst enemy to come here. Have been going here for about 15years. Disappointed the last 3-4 years staff has been rude and seemed inconvenienced. For the price, I was hoping not to get a watered down martini. One of my favorite places to go on Nantucket. I am on Nantucket very summer and it is a must to go to the Summer House, for drinks or dinner. The staff is great, and the owners are phenomenal! The scenery is beautiful. The Summer House itself is a great venue, beach, pool, bar, dining and quaint cottages that are all named and decorated differently inside. Terrific Place! read more

My husband and I stayed at The Summer House in Sconset (August 2-4) and ate at the both the restaurant and beachside bar. We were were at the property during the August 4th fire on the 3rd floor of the main house and thankfully, no one was hurt. As a result were transfered to another one of their properties in town (27 Fair Street) for our last night. Upon arrival, we were told by the Innkeeper at 27 Fair Street that we could expect compensation for the downgrade in the room and loss of property amenities and would also receive a bottle of wine. Neither happened. Both my husband and I have made numerous attempts to contact the Summer House by telephone and email over the past weeks; however, they have not returned our calls or emails. It has been impossible to reach any staff at the Summer House directly as all of the calls and emails are diverted to an outsourced reservation company located in Virginia. The staff at MAP Reservations in VA have indicated that our messages have been passed on. We are shocked and distressed that we have been treated this way when all we are seeking is a fair resolution to this issue. As for the review of the Sconset property: the view is incredible, the beach is great, the pool is small but nice, the summer staff were pleasant, the food and drinks were typical, nothing really impressive on any of the menus and way overpriced. The entire place needs considerable updating and some parts are dilapidated and unkempt. The gardens are overgrown and general grounds have not been maintained. The furniture in the piano bar and restaurant is old and the cushions are badly stained. For $700.00/night for our room we were treated to a walk in closet that was so musty nothing could be placed in it (we had to keep the door closed and blocked with our suitcases and windows open) -- we had to hang our clothes on hooks on the back of the bathroom door; the bathroom looked to be about 35 years old -- the toilet continually leaked, the dated jacuzzi had faux marble wall panels that were pulling off of the wall. There was also a section of the ceiling missing in the bedroom. The window air conditioner was loud. On the positive side, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the housekeeping staff were pleasant. read more

Winter can't come soon enough. Bad last year, nothing like years before. Management is gone. A contracted flight crew is oboard to fly the plane. Summer House gets away with this because of the location but only fools who don't know better give this show an standing ovation (just because you want to experience 'sconset). Horrible. The pool cafe? Somewhere between eating in a Cartagena open market and the West Palm airport food court. $29 for a burger + $3 for cheese. Sure it was tasty. But for a $32 burger you may as well go where the experience is better than the drug cartel ambience. Cesar salad like a Shakespeare tragedy. The show is over. Hopefully someone is going to buy it and pour 10M in, otherwise....tick tock, time's up. read more

Stopped at the Bistro for a snack and some drinks. We left after 1 drink. Patrons were allowed to get up from their table and talk to other patrons and go to the restroom without a mask. Multiple staff members had their masks pulled down below their chins. The water station where drinking glasses were laid out with ice ready to be served to patrons was next to the bathroom where other patrons were congregating without masks. Hard to believe what we were seeing considering how compliant Nantucketers and visitors are being. I don't care how wealthy you are...the rules apply to all. read more

I love the Summer House!! The cottages are so quaint and very clean. The staff was extremely welcoming and helped us with all of our needs. Dinner at the Beachside Bistro was just perfect! We had reservations on 8/10 @ 7:00. Services was non -existent food was a huge disappointment. Lobster Fra Diavolo was an atrocity totally bland as tasteless. Absolutely no attention to detail no service and no flavor. Had to beg to have Parmesan cheese for our meals. Asked for bread to soak up broth from our muscles and was informed they has no bread. Good place to have lunch outside by the dunes with fairly good fare & a nice cold one or two.

This is a gem. Stayed nearby, so it was easy to get to. Bartender and staff was great. Owner liked my dog and invited him in the place, so I knew I had to try it. We left the dog at home, but this was definitely a place we stopped by a few times on our week vacation. Good drinks and one of the best views on the island. Food was great for beach fanfare. Prices are typical of the island, so don't avoid it because it's on the east side. Worth the trip. read more

This is my first review. Usually I don't feel the need to leave one, but this place continues to overly disappoint that I'm hoping I can save someone else the trouble. I have been here once before and the view was spectacular; however, the owner was not. He insulted my now wife, because she was not up to his standards financially. We later confirmed with the staff that the owner was not having a "bad day" but is just unwelcoming. Now, a couple years later we decided to return. And it was worse than before. The place was completely dilapidated. We had called from in town to make sure it was open, and the receptionist told us it was! We got there and it was closed. A worker kindly told us that the receptionist does not know the hours and that the place is close. The owner then walked by us, heard the conversation, and said nothing. Bottom line, not worth the trip, time or money. read more

Have never paid so much for such an inferior experience. Waiter was pushy, flip, and insincere. The beef carpaccio was raw slabs of meat on toast with a few pieces of cheese - the grossest presentation of one of my favorite go to apps I have ever seen. The veal rib eye was fatty, and no one in our table of four felt like they had had a meal that was in anyway memorable (in a good way, that is). Highlight was getting to the bar after dinner and enjoying the piano. Tip: Pack your dinner, eat in the car, and come in for after dinner drinks and sing at the piano bar. read more

The owners just dont care. They have let this property fall apart. It's really to bad. The location is great. And it might be the only place with a pool. And while the cottages are "cute", they are falling apart. The maid service is nice and they clean the rooms okay, but the property is a dump. Cigarette butts all over the grounds. Beer bottles from the late nights at the restaurant. The Maintenance crew leaves shards of metal, glass and nails all over the place. Broken windows, screen doors, showers, and kitchenettes. The owners have a bratty grandson (MG) who screams and totally invades the space of everyone at the pool (Dude, put a leash on your kid). read more
