So here's the deal... This review is for "The Surplus Guy" himself and his associated business practice(s) in general... Not necessarily the store in 'Pedro, especially since I haven't stepped foot in it. But... You can be damn well sure I will soon!!! Jeff, (aka, "the Surplus Guy" himself), is great. Recently, I got a 35 year anniversary gift from the company, a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport (5.56mm x 45 AR). Since my employer is Texas based, they of course had to ship it from Tejas to Cali, (it's obviously a California compliant firearm), and with that comes the need for a fully accredited FFL, (i.e., enter "the Surplus Guy"). After my initial order placement, I spoke with Jeff over the phone, explained my situation and he immediately and thoroughly ran through all the details with me, up to and including the new required "Firearm Safety Certification", (as opposed to the HSC or "Handgun Safety Certification", which I already had). New laws basically "voided" my old certification so Jeff quickly set me up to take the new test, validate my test results, issue my new certificate, and handle all the paperwork to transfer my firearm legally... After 10 long days of waiting, I was able to meet him in his Torrance office at lunch, (no San Pedro, aka, "City of Los Angeles" transfers / pickups allowed), perform the safe operation demonstration of my piece and finally take ownership of my new baby!!! So freakin' stoked!!! Will be heatin' that bad boy up next weekend and can hardly wait!!! Thanks Jeff... You're definitely on my list of highly recommended business owners!!! read more

Was in this store yesterday and I'll go back again. From the outside it looks small, but walk in and they have a lot of inventory (the store is pretty deep). Great selection of clothing, boots, pins and hats. Good selection of knives and stuff. Although they had a pretty steady flow of customers, I didn't have to wait for help and they offered to order anything I wanted that they didn't have in stock. Great customer service, easy parking and seems really popular with the locals (always a great sign in my book). read more

Surplus Guy is a UPS access point. Though my driver's license and address matched, the lady who assisted in the package said she could not release the package because there is no code to scan. I waited patiently and when she refused to write down the code or take the picture of the code, though I showed in my smart phone the tracking ID, she still refused to release the package. I checked the tracking with HSN and reported as "Receiver refused package." Please don't twist stories because it'll only expose you. read more

Went here today to get my 3yr. old a Halloween BDU camo pant/jacket set. The place was great! It was clean & organized and had a variety of sizes for both kids & adults. Unlike other surplus stores that look like Nam blew up in it. The owner was the nicest guy and couldn't be more helpful.. Even made my son a personalized dog tag to go with his uniform. Maybe it's me but I expected a little more, but still well put together little shop. Looking for some gear but mostly new style that I can find at any sporting good shop or uniform shop. Cool old patches gas masks, stuff from wars. This place is all new Dickies, flight jackets, some pins, and knives. Stuff like that. The stuff to me is over priced. Please know I support your efforts. Dig this store! I 've been comming to buy stuff from Jeff since i was a kid and lived in San Pedro. As a kid, it was Union War Surplus, owned by Cheerfull Al and Jeff was working here. I bought tons of stuff here. From camo pants to cut into shorts, hats, backpacks, and boots. To my first paintball gun, pocket knife, and gun. The original store (Union War) closed its doors and San Pedro out one of the best stores in town. Jeff who i believe at the time was managing Union War eneded up reopening a new store called The Surplus Guy Store just a couple doors down. A smaller store but still packs alot of gear in there. Lots of boots, knives, work wear, survival gear, etc... He also carries tons of pins, patches, flannels, and hats. Kind of a greatest hits version of the old Union War Surplus. Brands like Dickies, Ben Davis, Thorogood boots, and benchmade knives to name a few are heavily stocked here. Great prices too! read more

Great place. People there know their merchandise, prices are very reasonable, selection is large. They ordered something for me, no problem, a modest purchase. Got it quickly and called me when it came in. All that for about a $3 item. Service can't get any better than that. I have shopped there 4 or 5 times and will continue to shop there.
