This place is like a prepper's/camper's paradise. So much items for sale that will help you survive for quite some time. With the way our environment is going and what is going on around the world, you can get any supplies you might need for survival. From emergency kits to camping gear, you will find everything here that you will need. The camping section has lots of items. Sleeping bags, dehydrated food packets, and other items like lanterns and water jugs. A lot of the items are army surplus so they are durable and will last a lifetime. There is also a huge area of apparel. Whether it be coats, sweaters, pants, hats, and beanies. Anything to survive those cold nights or even camouflage to disguise yourself out in the wild. Helpful staff. Let me borrow a tape measure which helped me make a purchase decision. Most of what I needed was on sale which was a happy surprise. I got some $13 large duffel bags that would have been $65 elsewhere. Good quality. Happy all around. So after hearing about the recent Turkey-Syria earthquakes, I realized that there are multiple earthquake fault zones in Southern California and I was reminded a movie about the famous San Andreas Fault featuring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I began my research on survival stores and decided to visit here first to shop for emergency & disaster kits. [Parking]: The store has a free private lot. [Pros]: This surplus store has one of the biggest survival kit options in Los Angeles County. All prebuilt survival kits (with red/orange backpacks) include a 3-day equivalent of food and water supply and prices for survival kits ranges from simple $36 one-person earthquake kit (food bar, pouches of drinking water, candle, mylar blanket, matches, and a minor first aid kit) to $79 deluxe vehicle emergency kit (food/water supply + jumper cables + road flares + duck tape + work gloves and more) to $99 deluxe one-person kit (food/water supply + tube tent + pocket knife + candle + light stick + heat packs + canteen and more.) The store also has a good selection of MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) as well as pouches of emergency drinking water and one of those Blue Can drinking water with 50-year shelf life. First responders receive a 15% discount. They also sell COVID-19 supplies such as masks and hand sanitizers. I didn't spend too much time going through camping and tactical gear sections. [Cons]: Prices for survival kits weren't exactly transparent as I had to dig through several labels to finally figure out various prices for different kits. Even one of the cashiers was confused on the price and took 5 minutes to search for the price for my survival kit. Public restroom is not available and visitors must leave big backpacks behind the counter. I ultimately got myself an earthquake survival kit for approximately $40 (tax included) in person and purchased few additional kits on their website. Yes you can probably purchase a similar kit on Amazon, but the price is slightly more expensive on Amazon (unless you are buying bulk or buying a 4-person kit) when comparing apples to apples. P.S. - Check their website first because I noticed one of the emergency kits had 37% discount and another deluxe emergency kit also had 37% off when buying a quantity of 2 via online purchase vs no discount when I visited in person, but don't forget shipping fees when purchasing online (free in-store pick up in Gardena is available). A camo-themed party, eh?! Seriously, though... what better app to use to search for things like camouflage costume/outfits besides Yelp!? So, with this ever-reliable app to the rescue, this was the best find there was out there. I didn't really know what to expect, but I'll be honest and say I didn't expect much. With that said, the pictures didn't do this place justice! This place is HUGE and has so much to offer! It is the epitome of a surplus and survival store! I got distracted for a few minutes as I roamed around and found a ton of interesting things - stuff one would need for emergencies: canisters, camping gear, MRE's, survival kits, etc... I tell ya, if there was an apocalypse a-comin', this store would carry everything to increase one's chances of survival! I learned they've been here over 30 years. Cashier was sweet and friendly. Located off Alondra Bl in Gardena. They have their own lot. Of course when first getting here you think a warehouse cause it's in an industrial part of Gardena and you are correct it's like a huge warehouse they have signs posted up hanging from the ceiling for what type of items you are looking for. They have a good amount of stuff from camping, survival and tactical gear. I came and picked up some pepper gel to keep at home and in the car just for the extra deterrent non lethal protection. The worker was great explaining the differences between the gel and spray. I've been here many times before you could spend a good amount of time here browsing around and prices are not bad either. read more

Items are a bit pricier than what they used to be, but I guess that's what covid has managed to do as well, is get prices raised on everything. Books need to be updated or at least cleaned to get the dust off. It's been awhile since I've come here and everything has increased in price by two folds. I would come to this place for military surplus nostalgic items but now their isn't anything really nostalgic about what's on the shelf. Good for camping and survival stuff when the zombies come and get you. They have clothes and other gadgets like flashlights and batons. My affinity to nature and the active life defines me as much as my extreme extroversion. Living such a life calls for a steady supply of quality equipment. And this is where I stock up on it. I've been coming to this store on and off for the past decade. It hasn't changed much, and that is a good thing. Unlike other surplus stores, the stuff they sell here is good quality. They have a wide selection of items, and many things here are very practical for that long camping trip. They have just about anything that comes standard in a surplus store: rucks, boots, fatigues, hats, sleeping bags, camping equipment, MREs, etc. This place sits a block east of the 110 freeway. It's not hard to find, and has plenty of parking. The staff is pretty cool. The last time I walked in here, an employee named Sergio helped me find the perfect ruck. Since I'm taking a trip to the east coast very soon, I needed a ruck that could fit my laptop and several other items (gym clothing, a spare change of clothing, snacks, water). I also needed said ruck to be inner city friendly (as I heard being flashy in the city I am going to makes you a victim). The ruck Sergio recommended was perfect for what I was looking for. I went to the front to pay, and was pleasantly surprised to find that veterans and service members get a discount. Once I'm back from the east coast, when my grad school years finally conclude, I am planning to take several trips to national parks across the US. I'm a vet that doesn't do parades, vet clubs (i.e., VFW), reunions or stand at off-ramps with a piece of cardboard and sad-sack face. I served my time, survived and got on with everything. But, now and then, I see this yahoo named "Gunny" on TV and the character can be intriguing. So when an offer came around to meet him, I geared up in full civvie battle-rattle and went to Major Surplus with a surf chum to greet the man. And that was about the best of the visit. The store itself has a fairly good stock of surplus military and survival gear but I'm not a fear-monger or SHTF gal and didn't see anything vital to my happiness or security. The only thing I asked for they didn't have (Israeli battle dressings) or anything similar. I did get a cool Voodoo Tactical tee shirt for only $8. Whoo-hoo! This was not a very well-attended event and the highlight was meeting the Gunny. He liked the "Veteran" shirt I wore (or how I filled it out) and we shared a couple laughs before it was time vacate the AO, un-ass the dust-off and grab some hot chow. I still won't do parades or anything like that but it was great meeting the legendary "Gunny". Somehow I doubt he'd be as physical or crudely verbose in today's beloved corps but then I'm not about to research that. Hollywood couldn't have found a better rep for the Marines if they tried and even at his age I'd wager he'd still scare the holy crap out of any raw recruit. Went to Major Surplus yesterday look for a couple USGI Sleeping Mats. I arrived in the parking lot at 5:55 PM (they close at 6PM), and they had already started closing the doors. I got up to the door about 5:59, and was told that they were closed. I said I know exactly what I want and will just be one minute. I was told no, they're closed and that I would need to come back. I had already driven 20 minutes in South Bay traffic, to get there the first time, so I will not be coming back. It's hard to imagine why brick and mortar stores complain about the internet when it's clear they don't want the business. You can get better customer service on eBay. If I were you, I'd forget Major Surplus. read more

Love this place for their Voodoo Tactical gear. They had an open house today...tons of people and we were able to meet the Gunny in-store for free (signing and pictures). Awesome time! I came looking for a ski mask and some gloves. I was short on time, but quickly found myself getting lost in this store. As soon as I walked in I had to check in my backpack. They actually thought I might shoplift. I ended up buying a bag. Their prices are very competitive. That ski mask I was looking for was listed at about twenty five bucks. I think I'll go to the Paramount swapmeet for a discount. Either way this place is awesome. read more

I've been in my share of surplus stores, this was my first visit to this particular one. The parking lot was full of police cars. Do they share a lot? There didn't seem to be a crime in progress or a uniform convention inside. Good variety of camping gear, camos, and police spec gear. Lots of books for survivalists. Prices seem a little high, but that's pretty standard with this stuff lately. It's like they're trying to make a profit or something. Didn't end up buying anything. This has been my go to place for supplies for years. I've seen it go from selling a majority of actual surplus to a tactical/camping store. The prices have gone up significantly over time. Not much of a place to find many bargains anymore. But it is well stocked. The staff is nice and helpful. I think the company should try to stay competitive with internet prices. For most items in the store I can find on the net tax free and with free shipping in some cases. The once a year sale is absolutely worth going to every year. As much as it sounds as if I don't like the place. That's not the truth. I need to stay away from it more often. Ha! I end up spending more every time I go to the store than I planned on. read more

I've bought goggles, tarps, food-grade water barrels, the pump for the water barrels, MREs, pepper spray, ice chest, etc. great prices. This is probably the largest surplus store in the South Bay area. Its a great place to get your emergency/earthquake/zombie GO BAG in order or at least the non fire arms stuff...They have lots of new and use military stuff from all over the world and you can find some unique things. They even have had Humvee, half-track and recently a shelter dealer with model in the parking lot. Check this place out first before going anywhere else. read more

This is by far one of the best surplus stores in the Southbay. They carry High Quality goods in all departments and are always having sales. You name it, they have it. I've gotten sleeping bags, cast iron cookware, bladders/bladder holder, boonies, face masks, jackets, paracord, mess kits, MRE's, compass's, knives, etc. etc. etc.... bottom line is, everything I've bought here is high quality.. except for my bladder which was defective out of the package but I'm sure if I wouldn't have lost the receipt and took it back they would've gladly exchanged it for me. Okay, so I have to admit this: I have a big fear of zombies. Way before the fad and everything, I had this dread in my stomach that a zombie apocalypse would break loose, and I would be completely unprepared. So I started looking up places to get the supplies and tools I needed. After all my planning and researching, I found out about Major Surplus & Survival, and we've been as close as two squirrels to a nut. ARCHITECTURAL PROTECTION: 5 stars So, this place doesn't only have what I need, but it also looks like a place I could go to if **** hit the fan. When you step into the parking lot at Major, you'll understand why I gave this place 5 stars. The parking lot is surrounded on all sides by either brick buildings or fencing. On top of the fencing is razor wire and this fencing goes around the complete perimeter of the parking lot. "What if the fencing fails because someone drives their car through it?" Great question! The building itself is large and made of brick, with no windows to reveal simple structural breach. The doors are solid and locked heavily. Therefore, even if the integrity of the parking lot fencing is compromised, you still have a strong, durable building to weather you through. SUPPLIES: 5 stars Inside you'll find a large assortment of items. The place is brimming with items that aren't just useful in survival, but also for leisure. In an emergency situation, luxuries are just as important for psychological well being as necessities are, so it's great to have certain things like lawn chairs, tents, and a large selection of flavors and dishes for the MREs ("meals ready to eat"). And their supplies are abundant. Entire sections are made for packs, water, food, fire, shelter, clothing, weapons, you name it. It is amazing. Honestly, it is the survivalists' toy shop, and everything looks fun to play with. They have a large selection of items, from the highest quality to whatever will get the job done. I honestly cannot stop gushing about this place. I'm like a cheerleader in love with the quarterback in some cheesy 50's sitcom. I've gone here and made four survival packs in the past year alone. The place is just amazing, and the combinations are endless. PRICE: 4 stars The pricing is actually rather fair. You can check online to see the pricing for online stores or other survival shops, but you'll always see Major as one of the most competitive in price and quality. They might have items that are a buck or two more than online, but here you can actually get it immediately. Also, their online store has a great selection with a huge back stock. STAFF: 4 stars If you went to a restaurant and you asked them to make you carbonara, but they replied back with, "I only know how to make grilled cheese", you'd be ticked off, right? Well, it's a great thing that the staff at Major know what they're talking about. Got a problem with a certain pick axe? Ask the staff. They'll have you swinging the right axe in the right angle at the right time. What about MREs? How long do they last? Great question! Most around 5 years, but all you have to do is ask. It's great going to a place where the staff can actually answer your questions, or at least try to find one for you. If a zombie apocalypse actually happened, I'm sure they'd know what to do. My older son is scrambling to get ready for a trip to Germany & Italy. Him: "It's snowing over there. How cold do you think it'll be?" While I stood there rolling my eyes, my husband got all happy because this was a good excuse to go to his favorite military surplus/camping gear store. He wanted to pick up some woolen socks & gloves for sonny boy. I didn't have any plans, so I tagged along. Gotta say, there were sure a lot of interesting things for me to look at. There's a book/ DVD section with all kinds of useful informational topics. "Surviving After Doomsday" For some reason, Reba McIntyre's character in Tremors got stuck in my head. She was an awesome survivalist! The bagged K-rations caught my attention. The green beans were tempting just for the sake of trying it once. There was a display of grommets. "Hey, hon?! What are grommets?" Hahaha. My husband shushed me and looked around to see if any of the other men heard me. LOL- I should know better than to act all woman-y in such a macho environment. This warehouse is so big that I didn't have time to fully explore the clothing aisles. I was still wandering around the camping area looking at cooking equipment when the hubby said he was finished with his shopping. The prices of the items he bought were good!
