A great place to find camping equipment, stuff for your disaster kit (we live in Cali - you have one right?), Levi's, Dickie's and generally neat stuff. I don't know much about the store genre, but in my opinion, only about 20% of the stuff there was actually "surplus" - a few things said "used" or "vintage" - but then had tags that said - "washed for that vintage look", or "made in China". There were some cool leather mittens that you could tell were the real thing, I guess the equipment like shovels and some of the ammo belts and pouches could have been surplus, maybe some of the bags, but mostly everything else that was military seemed pretty new. They had some great mesh laundry bags, not the crap you can get from Bed Bath and Beyond that falls apart the first time you use it, but ones that could actually hold laundry without ripping. Probably good for sleeping bag storage or even hanging food from a tree when camping - $7.99 I think. Much of the camping equipment seemed to be of the brand you can find at Big 5 or a well-stocked Target, but cheaper. Stansport is the name. They had machetes (don't ask), all sorts of duffel, messenger and storage bags as well as Jansport style backpacks, security guard gear, yellow safety vests, stuff that looked like ski gear, hats, patches, a room of shoes, a room of bags, and more that I'm sure I missed. For $36 I got: - a cool military bag called a musette - really a good, sturdy backpack with minimal frills, decent buckles, and perfect to hold my emergency kit in the back of my Jeep where things get tossed around and battered - a kerosene lamp and 4 extra wicks - I plan to use lamp oil instead of kerosene, probably easier to store and transport - a skein of paracord - I wanted to try making some of those paracord bracelets that seem to be the rage now, plus it's good to have on hand for tying up stuff, plus it can be unraveled into skinny threads for sewing repairs or fishing line - in an emergency of course. I love the bags, so I know I'll be back for those, but I also want to take a look at the jeans too. I could have spent more, I wanted a compass for some reason, I'm not into GPS I guess :) And after watching "127 Hours" I was checking out Swiss Army Knives and the Gerber line of folding knife tools too. There were 3 staffers there I think, 2 guys and a girl, and I bugged the girl to no end, but she knew where everything was and was very helpful. This store is located on the corner of Motor and Venice and has its own parking lot. It is next to the popular restaurant Versailles, so separate parking is a blessing. read more

Didn't get to spend too much time in here... Didn't bring my bike lock, so had to leave it outside... didn't want the bike to be missing by the time I got out so made it quick. Grabbed a hat, and a few pepper sprays for my wife and some other people in the family. Prices were reasonable, especially for the hat. Looked like there were a bunch of cool jackets, hats, along with plenty of other survivalist equipment. The only thing I would ask for is a bit more on the service side. I asked some questions about the pepper spray... how many sprays do they last... are there any laws to kind of watch for.... My guess are these are common questions, but the most they could say was I don't know to the # of sprays question, and check with local law enforcement for the laws question... I have been looking for a classic "biker" leather jacket for a while. The Surplus Store had exactly what I was looking for. I ended up getting the Superstar by First Manufacturing. Usually come here for their MRE's, camping stuff, bags, paracord and I try to leave without buying anything else. I will go back, and I always go back. The Surplus Store outfitted me for Halloween. When I walked in, the friendly storekeepers asked how they could help, and didn't judge me (like I had been fearing) for coming here for a mere Halloween costume (instead of, like, you know, survivalist gear). I bought a genuine used flight suit for my Top Gun costume, and then, got some badges. Easy 4 stars for friendly and quick attitude, low pressure sales environment and awesome legit selection. In the event of a Zombie Apocalypse, this would be a good place to stock up on some goods. PIckaxe, shovels, canteens, bags, sleeping bags, thick jackets, MREs, kitchenware -- you name it, they've got it. Although the store itself is PACKED like sardines in a can, it's not hard to maneuver around to find what you need. It smells like fish just a tad, and some of the items look a tad worn or shelved for a long time, but hey, if you're running from Zombies, you can't be TOO picky about the smell or packaging. ;) The prices for various items are reasonable, and they have enough items in stock to ensure you get what you need. Just make sure when you buy something, you make sure you check the quality. You don't want holes or tears in what you buy. (Also, if you go towards the back of the store, it reeks of urine.) :( At any rate, when the Zombie Apocalypse hits, y'all better not swarm to this location; I'm not afraid to push and shove my way through crowds, and I'll be wearing my spiked rollerblades to mow my way through. Discovered how close the surplus store is to my house on a walk yesterday. Yay now I don't have to journey all the way west to REI anymore! I found some really cool things here, camping/backpacking gear, new and *used* military helmets and gear, awards pins, dickies, leathers jackets, heavy flannels and good thermals, hats on hats and my favorite: a buffet of freeze dried food. Good selection of jack knives too. I agree with Nathaniel B, it was really hard to leave this store. The way all the products are compacted in gives the store a very cavernous appropriate feel for army surplus despite narrow aisles. Cool place. Reminded me of my girl scouts years. read more

Great job Yelp. I wanted to get a pair of used boots to use as wet shoes on a canyoneering trip. Just 50 total driving and shopping minutes and 25 bucks including tax for Bat chukka boots (SEAL shoes) They worked great. There was a time when "army navy surplus" meant "low price for good quality". Not any more. There are SOME bargains here but not very many. Most stuff is higher than what you can get it for at amazon.com or other online places. It IS cheaper than Adventure 16, though, I'll give them that - but that's not saying much. It's fun to shop in there and definitely a good place to pick up some fairly priced camping equipment. Just don't expect it to be full of bargains. But then, what is, these days? read more

4 Stars because it's a rare place in the area and they have a lot of inventory. For some reason I was hoping to see a lot more vintage clothing. Don't go there expecting a step back in to history as most of the their surplus is brand-new items and some aimed at the hipster crowd. Really awesome place. Came here after finding out the "Surplus Store" in Hawthorne, CA finally closed up and became a .98 cent type of discount store. Was looking for Propper brand Camo shorts, and they had a nice selection. Staff was super friendly and you could spend quite a bit of time just marveling at all of the cool items they have. I got a chuckle out of a customer who was upset they did not carry "Rubber Bullets to shoot a bear with" and "a gas mask for her cat". Will stop by again soon! read more

OK so at first you think... Army Surplus? Yeah no thanks, I'm over my Tom Boy army phase from my teenage years.... and yet I was lured into going in with my cousin and her husband for camping supplies. Now, I'm no camper but I am a lover of all things survival style and WWMD (What Would MacGyver Do) gear. I ended up getting stuff I never knew existed but realized I couldn't LIVE without (tons of cute bags, tin cups and storage stuff etc.) Prices were good and there is lots to see inside. I went to get some 550 paracord. they didnt seem to have a very extensive color selection, but better than most who only have 3 colors. lost a star cuz they had crappy clasps, lol. they ones they had were ok, but more than a $1 each. i have seen them cheaper elsewhere, so will probably only return for the cord. they had a pretty sick pin collection too for whatever branch. read more

Several years ago, I bought a hat to use for outdoor activities from M&I. I loved that hat, it was well used. This past summer, horror of all horrors, I went fishing at Big Bear lake and it blew off my head and into the water and even with much searching, it sank to a watery grave at the bottom of the lake somewhere (horribly anti-environmental I realize, sorry). I went to a couple of surplus stores looking for this hat in a psychotic attempt to find THE EXACT SAME THING. Guess what? I found it here! Yay! That day was so joyous that I bought two in different colors and they were only $10 each and have almost 100% UV protection. They seem to have a great selection of outdoorsy supplies that you typically see at these places but what I highly, highly recommend is the extensive hat collection, not kidding. All kinds of hats in cotton, straw, wool, camping, hipster, uptempo, downbeat--all at very good prices. Let me summarize by saying that if you are wearing a hat in windy conditions near water don't try to be cool, just use the damn strap. read more

What a great little last minute stop to grab a few essentials for a car camping trip. I'm not gonna lie - I'm most proud of my classic red checkered tablecloth that I purchased from here. I'll probably head back for some backpacks or hydration packs next time because they are organized and sold at really reasonable prices. A few good options and price tags on the sleeping bags and tents too. Dig around. The store is full of useful day-to-day items that you may not have thought to buy for outdoor adventures. Only downside purchases were the itty bitty camp soap bottles and the lame waterproof candles that would hardly work. read more

As the others have written... this is a good place to buy camping and survival gear. They have everything from knives, to camo, to backpacks, to camping stoves, to emergency rations. Some of the camping stuff is "made in china" and of poor quality. Wish they had a tad more actual army surplus. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I haven't been in here since March of 2015 when I bought a decent priced duffle bag for my trip to Europe, 3 years later coming in to get the same bag i got 3 years ago, couldn't believe how much it went up in price, sadly I refused to pay the price they have for that same bag now, I ordered one from amazon a bit bigger and $15 cheaper, customer service could be better too! I visited this store because of all its awesome reviews. I'm going camping this weekend and was looking forward to getting a few things. I was looking for Coleman Propane Cylinders which they carry but they are $5.99 each. After doing a few price checks for big department stores I found them at Target 2 pack for $6.95.
