This store had caught my eye as a potential source for replacement of my long-ago worn out sweater, watch cap, and tossed-out boots, all issued to me whilst a raisin at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, North ChicagoIL-USA, 1974. Unfortunately, little military surplus is actually available here, and I was unable to replace anything, though I was able to find a few items that area always useful which included plastic whistles (an important part of my visibility when pedaling my Doublevision) and 300feet/91meters of 0.25inch/0.6cm, 110pound/50kg cord. I purchased the cord on a second visit to this fine store--my first visit was during the evening, 30DEC2016. At that moment, I was immediately attracted to the cord, its compactness quite desireable, as was the plastic egg holder. I resisted temptation, but found that I actually had a need to help strap a bicycle onto my motor vehicle. Since the cord was slight, the length was beneficial as I needed to make multiple windings, resulting in a combined strength of some 400lbs/181kgs, sufficient to keep the Yakima rack stable whilst motoring at high speed. Once arrived at home in El PasoTX-USA, I unwrapped the bike & rack and noticed that a few separate windings had been stressed to the core, but no threat to breakage due to the multiple windings. Next time, though, I'll be using a much thicker, higher breakage rope! This surplus store was an interesting bargain shoppers paradise, with extremely helpful staff. It's pretty much your average surplus store, but BUYER BEWARE: Their return policy is HORRIBLE! I'd give them one star except that the manager lady gave me an in-store credit for the thing I purchased, even though I returned it the next day unused because their label was wrong. Should I really feel grateful for getting an in-store credit, when reversing the charge on my credit card would have been painless? I've never heard of a store losing business due to good customer service, so it seems a shame that The Surplus Store doesn't focus on building customer loyalty and good will, rather than obsessing over getting hold of the money and never giving it back, even when it was the store's mistake that led to the return. read more

Well, these guys had them not just one or two, they had a bunch of them with the outside lining and everything, anyway they have so much stuff there that I maxed two of my credit cards. This place was waaay bigger than I expected and really had everything a survivalist could want. However, maybe because I have no experience in surviving, I thought the stuff would be way cheaper than what it was. I also couldn't shake that maybe a crazy guy was in there buying stuff to kill us all, then I thought, that person could be me! As mentioned in the other reviews, most of the products sold are NOT used or surplus goods. That isn't a terrible thing. What is terrible is the fact most of the merchandise is over priced. Why would I purchase substandard gear at ridiculous prices when I could purchase exceptional gear with a lifetime warranty for 10% more. If you want products that may last you a couple times before they break, this is your place; otherwise, you are better off shopping at R.E.I., Adventure16, or Sports Chalet. Which is a shame! I would prefer to shop at a local independent store. In the future, I'll get my ammo cans and GABDs from a retailer that is interested in my pocketbook as well as theirs. read more

Called to see if they carried a particular costume piece, and while they didn't have the exact item, Victor (associate I was speaking to on the phone) came up with an idea of what I could do and it worked brilliantly! So i needed some emergency supplies and i went to the surplus store in hollywood thinking it would be better then this one but i was dead wrong! I ended up getting some food rations, water, and some light sticks for my kit for now and i needed some new boots and they had my size which is 14 in Desert tan boots and i have never been able to find them anymore! I saw a pair of the same boots at the surplus store in hollywood and they were charging like something like $70-$80 cant remember and they were used! Really $70-$80 for shoes that are used! So i got them here for $36.50 a big difference in price! Awesome stuff and the employees know there stuff and check on you often! read more

I went here recently and was really happy with the experience. I have been to many military surplus stores over the years, and many of them were staffed by disinterested slobs who weren't familiar with their shoddy, sparse inventory. The Surplus Store on Venice offered a far superior experience, however. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly, and eager to come over and see if I had any questions. Must admit a little disappointed. I had high hopes before going here. They do have a lot of things and I did find myself liking liking q bunch of it. Most of the stuff is new. Not a lot of used stuff. The majority of used stuff that I found were bags and that's what I was going for. Prices were higher then I anticipated. All of the staff were polite and helpful. I will admit the one in the valley (on van nuys) I feel as better selection and better prices. I will go back but I don't know if I will buy anything. read more

Over the years I have frequented the Army Surplus store on a variety of occasions to stock up on camping supplies. Unfortunately, my last two trips have been busts. Last year, I bought a lamp (battery operated). It worked for a couple of hours and then broke for no apparent reason (never dropped, kicked, no signs of damage). We could never get it to work again, so we took it back to Army Surplus but they refused to allow me to return it. Even though I was disappointed, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and I went shopping there again before my next camping trip. This time I bought a propane lamp. When we got to the campsite and took it out of the box, we noticed the lamp was damaged and the glass was cracked. We put it back in the box with the hope of returning it. Even though we NEVER used it, when we took it back to Army Surplus they refused to accept the lamp back. In fact, they would not even allow us to exchange it or return for store credit. Now, I am stuck with 2 faulty products from this establishment. I am all for supporting the local guy, but with no customer service, just average prices and a complete lack of product satisfaction, I will be going other places for my camping needs from now on. read more

nothing like realizing you're going to need a raincoat for a trip to a place where....as opposed to LA...it actually rains! yeah...good luck with finding that in august when it's gazillion degrees out and drier than a bone. i looked online. but i'm hard to fit being tall with long arms and most appeared either very cheap and flimsy or too expensive for something i won't use very often. i searched through the sporting goods and patagonia where their "final reduction price" was still more than $100 and that was not going to happen. then i remembered the surplus store where i wound up finding the perfect waterproof jacket, at the perfect fabric weight, the perfect fit and ...the perfect price. walked out for under $35.00 including tax. did i mention that it was also much nicer than the patagonia sale item for 3 times the money? almost as important to me in this day and age...the service was great and it's a family owned business that i want to see stick around for years to come.... a total win/win situation, read more
