I've been in this store many times, and no matter what I'm looking for, they somehow have it tucked away somewhere. You just have to know whether to check upstairs or downstairs. Came in looking for an assortment of shoes that were of the slip-on variety. Coloring and style are important, but so is comfort and price right? Was greeted instantly by a gentleman in the shoe section who was quick to recommend a few choices and didn't hesitate to go back and forth a few times. Big 5 has a decent selection of shoes and some big names. However, there prices are still too close to what you would pay in a named shoe store itself, like nike, adidas, new balance, etc. And while I didn't end up buying anything the customer service and staff as a whole were super helpful and pleasant. Lastly, now that it is summer they most certainly have everything one would need with regards to swimwear, pop up chairs, towels you name it. He was both knowledgeable about skates & friendly! Kris was attentive & he even remembered my friend & I from when we stopped by last year! Flashback / Dec 2022: I had not been to Big 5 in years! When a great friend started going skating on a regular basis last year, I knew that part of her Christmas present would be a pair of Indoor Skates! In a positive energetic tone, heard nothing back, ok whatever. I just need to buy some affordable wieght training shoes so planning to be in and out pretty quick. Walk to the shoe wall. Stay there for like 5 minutes looking at some shoes, waiting for someone to come by. Nobody comes by. O well I sit down there on the try on bench and look up what the suggested wieght training shoes to buy are online. Then proceeded to buy them from Amazon while sitting in Big 5. Nobody comes by. Walk out the store while two people are still hanging out at the register one of them texting someone. Don't see how this in store approach will be defensible as online retailers push into this market. If you are looking for a kayak paddle you can get one here. Both REI and Big 5 carry Lifetime Kayak Paddles. These paddles work great and they have a paddle for you and if you wonder about the purchase, mine has worked fine, until recently. On the old 2 piece paddles there is a locking screw thing that makes the paddle adjustable but mine snapped. I contacted the company online and the customer service was prompt and helpful. I didn't know a part number but sent a photo in the email. The reply was that my paddle version was no longer available but the new replacement would be sent. This Big 5 is located on Sepulvda Blvd. in Culver City. It has been there for years. The service is very nice and they have a good amount of employees to help you. They carry all manner of sporting goods, including clothes and shoes. Their tennis shoes are always a great price. And if you want a gun, well, they have that as well. They sell bikes at decent prices and they have a good selection. I was there a couple of months back, so with Covid 19, I am not sure if they are open, but they do have an on line presence. read more

Cashier Teresa if the name is right on the receipt was utterly rude in the way she spoke to my partner. He received a present tags still on the carhartt pullover sweater had the receipt and she spoke in such a manner that he didn't even want to turn his ID over to her. He got store credit, however by that time we were both so infuriated we walked around and just left. Didn't feel like schlepping all the way to the place where I initially went and tried out a new store of this chain: Sepulvedav When I walked inside I was already pleasant surprised at how organized this store looked. A friendly employee asked if I needed any help. And this guy was super busy, helping 4 customers at the same time, yet still smiling and being patient. Within no time he handed me 4 boxes with shoes, so impressed. I didn't feel like breaking the bank and got myself a paid great hiking shoes for $69. Tues Oct 15, about 6.15pm. Up till today I would have given it at least 3 or even 4 star, with all its faults the guys and gals who work there are probably low paid, poorly trained and trying their best. A TOTAL JERK named Matt was at the front of the store. I asked him which backpacks were on sale. he had no idea whatsoever what was on the ad. work in a restaurant -- study the menu. work in a store --study the ad.. NOT HIM... i saw a few upstairs, with no help from him, nor did he call on an employee upstairs to help me. BUT, when I returned downstairs, while looking at binoculars, he asked me to check my bag. I had a plastic bag from Bed Bath and Beyond. I said no I am just leaving, (since again no one offered to help me with the binoculars) He PHYSICALLY barged in front of me, and said, and I kid you not, 'THAT BAG LOOKS BIGGER TO ME THAN IT DID BEFORE!' They won't even let customers into the dressing to try on swimsuits "because of Covid." I have a few words for this store: Very bad, awful customer service starting from the manager down to the regular employee. I visited on 10/13 to get a backpack. The first employee I asked looked depressed and unhappy when I asked her about where I could find backpacks. Instead of taking me there, she said go upstairs near the mattresses. She didn't want to be bothered. The manager was called to help with a price inquiry and he had the customer service skills of a criminal prosecutor down to convict an innocent man. Therefore coming to southern Cali for fall break, I was able to come here after looking all over for my daughters soccer cleats. They had one her size and one a size up. Used to have much better staff; pretty bad now. If they have what you want, the price is probably right. Extra points for sales. This location is small, limited stock for most categories, terrible parking. But again, good prices on most items. There used to be a girl on the register who was wonderful. If you asked nicely, she would give you the sale price of an item that frequently is on sale, but perhaps not at the moment. That was excellent. Today the whole store was practically on sale, with coupons, which we had. One category was goggles and everything related by Speedo. My husband who swims picked up a spare nose plug, Speedo, and he points to the coupon with huge list of Speedo swim items, and because it does not specifically say "nose plug" she does not give him the 25% off. She was extremely passive-aggressive about it, is the real problem. It was not the $2 that he would have saved, it was the nasty attitude. We were buying a bunch of other stuff, it's not like that was the only thing. And the list on the coupon clearly implied "all Speedo swim accessories". It's hard to find a convenient sporting goods store but this one is poorly organized with no ryhme or reason as to what is upstairs vs. Downstairs. There's either no staff around when you need them or they're goofing around. When I arrived there was a huge line to check out with one cashier while I heard two male staffers joking around in back. The two male staffers came out and to my surprise one of them was the manager. I then from halfway across the store continued to hear the two guys joke around about explosive diarhea. I can't believe that stores like this can still survive. It's like when I used to live in New York City and nobody gives a crap about customer service. Many people work there but everyone looks like they're on vacation and or part zombie. The store had zero selection for volleyball shoes so I ended up picking up a pair of men's basketball shoes I dislike giving bad reviews, but my intention for doing this is that somebody will give a crap and actually do something about customer service & knowledge.
