You have a security guard at the door which is understandable because of the neighborhood you are in. Do not make the security guard, ask people to check their purses, move their cars and whatever else is needed within the first 2 minutes of their arrival, it's very off putting. The employees can do this. The security guard shouldn't be forced to do the job of the entire crew. I have been shopping there for years, I will no longer shop here. I prefer to be greeted with a 'hello! welcome to our store' before being given multiple instructions by a guard. read more

I go here a lot and the selection is good but the people who work there are horribly rude. I understand that it's a charity shop but don't you still want to sell stuff and make money for your charity? Every time I like to look at something in the case the manager guy gives me attitude. I was excited to visit the UCLA thrift shop since I wasn't aware of its existence. This is a corner shop with no dedicated parking lot, so plan to use street parking but beware of parking enforcement patrolling the area. The shop had a decent selection of goods and clothes but all of the prices were more consistent with a boutique, not what I would call "thrifting on a budget". This was surprising to me when comparing to local Goodwill or Council shops... don't plan to go back unless they change their pricing strategy. read more

So, so. Sometimes they had good things and for a good deal and a lot of times too, they had a bunch of worthless, overpriced stuff that you could likely get new for a lower price. People donated things to them for free, so why make the prices so high!? The cashiers were ok, besides one, fat sassy one. Then the two, female managers need to go, notably the Black one that would roll her eyes, be rude and unfriendly! She, who is supposed to be "the assistant manager" and "the main manager" (that looks like an old Latina) would have a bad attitude! I would donate to them and buy lots from them and still, they would act like they were so high, angry and mighty! I wish they would get rid of the management! And they would and/or try to close early, like every time! read more

Stopped in after having lunch nearby with the BFF. Good quality 2nd hand merchandise and most pricing is pretty reasonable (purchased a throw pillow for 3 bucks in like new/excellent condition, & a practically brand new t shirt for 2 bucks). They did not have much in the way of men's clothing nor accessories but they have a couple of big sections for women's clothing and accessories, and a few children's toys that were reasonably priced. The store is pretty small and not as big as Goodwill or Salvation Army but street parking seemed plentiful. read more

I found this little gem of a place while staying over with a friend. This is a true thrift shop with no markups whatsoever, and the craziest mark downs! Everything in this store was 75% off, I saw a dress for $18, came out to be $4.50. Has a ton of really good treasures and things are always rotating and changing. This thrift store is not as big as some of the Goodwill stores but their merchandise is usually good quality and often there are high end items there. I also like that they make it very easy for people to make donations. There's a back door where you nock and people would come out to help you. It's easier than most of the Goodwill stores in the area. Parking is on the street so can be challenging at times. But their location is not in a busy traffic area so that makes the visiting experience nice, whether you're here to shop or donate. NOTE: donation department is closed on Mondays. read more

I was excited because of all the great things I had heard.how disappointing. Some of the pricing was just silly and the selection was not at all impressive. It may be that I am spoiled by all the shops in my area or it may be that all the other shops greet you when you come in or acknowledge your presence. This thrift store is awesome! There was a nice sprinkling of designer clothes mixed in with the random junk. On top of that all the womens clothes were on sale. I saw some balenciaga jeans for $20, plenty of other designer jeans for under $15. There were a couple pairs of ferragamo pumps and a lululemon top. Decided to get a sweatshirt or jacket to wear and shed for a race when it warmed up so figured I'd bargain hunt. So I'll be using and re-donating this item. This is kind of a non-descript store in a residential area on Sawtelle north of Santa Monica Blvd. I'm a USC fan but I'll give my hard-earned money to the fine other major LA university any day of the week. It's actually a great school. What amused me walking in is they have a lot of brand new hats outside and there were like eight that are USC caps. Didn't see one I liked or I would have bought it. There were Laker hats and some others. I did not see any UCLA hats. Maybe they were donated or were bought already. I had Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" song in my mind the entire time I was there. No reason other than I like that song and it's location-appropriate. I found what I wanted! And it was an extra percentage off so I saved even more. No idea what the history of the garment I bought is but I will be abandoning it roadside at my next race. Have not shopped there, but I just dropped off a BUNCH of various stuff (books, clothing, bric-a-brac) and can say that things seem good here. And good at the ol' homestead, too. Park out in front -- keep those flashers on in the White Zone -- and they help you unload your donations. As long as it's in good working condition, it's acceptable. They'll give you a receipt and you estimate the value for tax purposes. I gave everything from recent DVR boxes that won't work with the new Provider, to clothes, to a wet/dry vac, a small room heater, a couple Pro Sports jerseys...you name it. And you may now possibly find all my stuff there - at the UCLA Thrift Shop. Let it go and let someone else have a turn with stuff you might not need or want. read more

Few things are more infuriating than to be treated with undeserved disrespect. My office is on the same block as this shop, so I've donated quite a few items over the years, items from my office and that I've brought from home. It's usually a simple process. I pack things up nicely, put accessories in bags with labels (for shelving units, electronics, etc.), greet the person at the door, and put the items on a table they have just inside the door. I don't get a receipt because I don't itemize. Today at 9 a.m., I walked down with some belts and a baseball glove to donate. As I approached, I saw the sign says the donation room opens at 10, but there was a woman just getting out of her car to open the store. Naturally, I asked if I could put my items inside as she opened the door. She told me her "hands are busy". I told her I don't need her hands, just to put the items on the table. Nope, she said I couldn't. So I walked back to my office with my donations still in hand like an idiot. I've been self-employed for over twenty years, and I could never imagine being so unreasonable and dismissive of a customer, let alone someone donating to my business (were we to accept donations). And I would never hire someone of the character of this person I encountered today. Always, to me, this reflects poorly on the business and its values. read more

I checked it out today and I really liked the store. Very helpful sales associates! The store is clean and organized (well, as much it can be: they do not organize by color for example, something I have seen at other thrift shops and I really liked). Their prices were good - especially since they had a "yellow sign - 50% off" special going on, lasts until the weekend). They had a nice furniture and housewares section as well. All items I checked out where in good condition. I saw two ladies grabbing a few books and they were all newer titles. I bought a few very new-looking dress shirts (I made some great Banana and Gap discoveries, also at other thrift stores, by the way!) and a few tank tops. I spent $15 for a full bag of tops! Very pleased. *Disclaimer: If you are hesitant at shopping at a thrift shop, knock it off. After all, you don't need to buy used shoes or nasty, dirty items. Just around the corner from Out of the Closet, this hidden gem had an amazing furniture selection with some great antique pieces as well as a decent glassware collection and record selection. I am a clothes girl myself and was able to walk out with a brand new looking navy blue Lacoste sweater for 18 dollars and a pair of maroon Juicy sweatpants in great condition for the same price. They had a vast section with "purple tags" that meant the clothing was 50% off and the designer section was still priced fairly, unlike other stores, such as Council Thrift, who eBay their prices like crazy. The parking is street and the meter maids are very diligent, so park at your own risk over your allotted time. FYI This place is closed on Mondays! Happy hunting! read more

I stopped by here the other day after passing by literally 5 times and seeing that the place was closed. I guess that might be my biggest complaint about this place: that the hours are pretty stingy (if you're only open until 3 pm on weekends, there's a pretty good chance I might not have gotten my day started yet!). My first impression of the place was that it was a well-organized shop with decent prices and tons of goodies. Right when I stepped in, I saw a pair of new Cole Haan heels for $17 that were selling for $200 a year or two ago (and that would have been mine if they weren't size 10s!). There was a small and not too shabby designer section of clothes, quite a few suits, and a large selection of women's clothing. Nothing too stand-out, but I didn't look too hard. I was very impressed by their selection of furniture and pictures/paintings: that day they had a 50% off all paintings sale, and if I had a real house, this would be a great place to get decorations. The real gem for me, though, was a basket full of cassette tapes for 50 cents each. For various reasons my car only has a cassette player, and I love finding places that sell cassette tapes. There's a bunch of metered parking right around the store, but I parked for free on the one way street that's right next to the freeway. read more

I scored $200 Eileen Fisher pants for $25 and $650 Escada pants for $35. I see complaints about this place being overpriced which it's far from! Your not going to get Neiman Marcus brands for a $1 come on people this is'nt a rummage sale. I recently stopped by and saw a Chanel blazer that i wish i could get into for $95, you can't find a Chanel garment piece under $500 used in Los Angeles. I saw this thrift store plugged on Dr. Phil. I thought I would give it a try and I was extremely disappointed in the store. Overly priced and poorly arranged. Even the "Designer" section wasn't that great. I saw a cashmere sweater that had been REALLY worn and they wanted $65...ARE YOU KIDDING??? Hey, F.Y.I....IT'S! USED! STUFF! I once got an Armani handbag at Value Village for $3. It was authentic (serial # and all)...Now that's a bargain... We did go to the children's section at the store across the street and got a lot of Disney video's for my daughter. That was a great deal. Other then that it was a total loss! UCLA thrift store is a real toss-up. Some of the items here are really neat and some of the items here look like they've literally been picked out of the bottom of the trash bin. Fortunately when I visited most of the stuff that appeared to have been picked out from the bottom of the trash was out front, with the rest of the trash which was good. I hate trash. The store offers a pretty decent selection of standard fare; there is a nice book section with a *somewhat* decent selection of books, the typical horrible record bin, yesteryear's fashions for the ladies and the gents and hoards of trinkets. Although I didn't come to pick up hot wears for my bod, I do mentally yelp so I figured I'd carouse the aisle as to inform my readers of this aspect of the shop. Serious meh. Most of the clothing was overpriced and although it was in good condition there was nothing that jumped off the rack and into my hands that said "buy me"; the clothing was evenly divided between clothing reminiscent to that worn in "the babysitter's club movie" and items that had been donated from current bruins who were now too svelte to fit into last semester's yoga pants ( bravo! That is a great accomplishment). Much like everything else in the store, the clothing selection was inconsistent in quality and pricing The staff working there seemed rather unenthused about working there, or being alive for that matter. Although it's not terribly important at thrift stores, in the instance where I do encounter a particularly eccentric or friendly employee at a store in can beckon me back. Customer service? Two stars. It's important to note that there appeared to be quite a few sales on select items when I walked in. Much of the furniture was on sale and the sale prices moved it from overpriced to considerable and a lot of small housewares were on sale as well and very reasonably priced. If you're in the neighborhood, UCLA thrift shop is worth a peek but like much of the thrift stores on the west side, it's nothing to write home about. Neat vintage building. Kinda pricey, but high quality, VERY clean, sylish clothing; mostly for the gals, great book section; nice, eclectic home accessories. Lots of actual celebrity donations, but they won't say who? Volunteers are very nice, and helpful. Parking is street ONLY and parking enforcement hovers around like municipal buzzards looking for carrion. If you are one of those folks misusing a blue handicap placard, and there are a LOT of you!: DON'T, you'll get busted HARD!
