We had Salmon, Stuffed Flounder, bacon wrapped scallops, and broiled crabcake entrees and all were delicious and generous as were th asparagus and maskedpotatoe sides. We weren't going to write a review and going to let it be but after we were still charged we decided to. Our son ordered a cheeseburger and there was a huge hair in it!! My husband ordered the recommended drink and it had flies in it. We discretely let the waitress know. The waitress brought out another cheeseburger and again it had a hugeeee hair in it!! They also brought out another drink. We again discretely let the waitress know about the hair and did not want to make a big deal about it. We received the bill and the only thing they took off was the cheeseburger with the hair. The entire meal was ruined as the rest of our guests were grossed out but we made the best of it. We visited on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. The marina and facilities have had a multimillion dollar upgrade from a decade ago. Boats entered and departed the marina all evening. The marina offers gasoline, diesel, and a pump out. Electric posts are at each of about 40 slips. The food was fine for a typical marina seafood house; mostly fried food, some broiled. Think burgers, crab cakes, stuffed flounder, and the like. Our server was a genuinely adorable young woman. She was intelligent and gave good conversation. Unfortunately part of that conversation was advising diners that the kitchen had been busy and had run out of scallops, crab dip, etc. Prices were entirely reasonable. Wine by the bottle at $22? Great! Overall, this is an ideal boating destination. We will also return by ferry across the James River from time to time to support this local establishment. Drove out from Richmond for a late lunch. Well worth the drive. Lovely setting. Was thinking sit outside but the breeze and upper 60 temps had me inside instead seated at a window. Service was quick and throughout the meal attentive. Started with 1/2 dozen oysters which were sweet and perfectly salty. Loved that they were locally sourced. Then had 1/2 of the seafood platter. This is one of the best seafood restaurants that I've ever eaten at! Food is hot and comes out quickly. Had a pumpkin martini which I highly recommend tasted very good. For starters had a bowl of crab soup had lots of crab in it and was delicious. For the main course had fish and chips (and I'm not a fan of fish and chips) some of the best fish and chips I've ever eaten crispy hot and fresh. Not worth the price. Fried flounder was raw and it was super small for a full dinner plate. $30 for a small plate!! I asked server if this was the full plate, to make sure and she said yes and everybody asks the same question. Any seafood restaurant that will not allow you to fry the flounder and broil the rest is lazy and it makes me think this is a fast food establishment. We tried coming out by boat but tide was going out in an hour and it's very shallow here....so we finally made the 90 min drive to eat here. This will definitely be our last time. The menu was exceptionally limited. I wanted an entree of fried shrimp and fried oyster. But i was told I can't have that. I can have either one or the other but not both. So what combination can I get? There is one option! It is a $32 seafood platter with flounder, scallops, shrimp and crab cake. I told them I wanted oyster instead of flounder or scallops. First the waitress said I could only substitute for shrimp. Then I was told she would omit both the fish and scallops and charge me extra to get oyster. Why charge me extra to get less food? It was frustrating and she was confusing so I ended up with the Cajun seafood pasta. The chicken in it was not blackened as described and the milk sauce was especially thin, bland and flavorless even though the waitress and menu both described it as spicy. It had 5 shrimp and an acceptable amount of sausage and chicken. I was broken hearted the waitress couldn't make an effort to sell us what we wanted to begin with. Hubby ordered rib and shrimp with fries which were dumped in a messy pile in a garbage looking pail with bbq sauce carelessly smeared on the shrimp and fries. Can't they spring for plates? My group of four came here after a day trip to Chippoke. We all liked the idea of dining at a Marina, and the view did not disappoint. Unfortunately the food was not as great. I ordered a Caesar salad with salmon. The salmon was great, but they had drowned the salad in so much dressing I could barely eat it. Two others at my table ordered chicken dishes and they both agreed that the chicken tasted dry and tough (though really that's what they get for ordering chicken at a seafood restaurant). The last guy ordered a burger with crab on it and he said it was good. We also shared sweet potato waffle fries, which was my favorite part of the meal. For the prices, this place really should be trying a lot harder though. A restaurant can't survive alone on a good view. read more

It was ok.... My son and I got the scallops, his fried mine broiled. I think they were really good but small. The half order is 5 scallops and it looked sparse. It came with a choice of 2 sides, which I assume is seasonal because he had to read them to us (multiple times) it had to be frustrating. My mom said her fried oysters were kind of smushy. HOWEVER it was nice atmosphere and the best onion rings I've ever had. If I don't have ungrateful kids with me and knowing now to stick with apps, drinks, fish and chips I'd come back. read more

Yes Yes Yes, I can not get enough of this place. The absolute best part of Surry. The seafood is clean and fresh, no strong fishy smell/flavored or gritty scallops. When I say "you can't go wrong" I mean just that. I have yet to be silenced by any meal here. Between the "ohgawdthat'sgood" and the "mMMmmmm's", it's easy to spot me; just look for the leg going 100mph. This place is nestled at the end of a residential street. Sitting right on the water, with boat access, Surry Seafood offers not only great indoor and outdoor seating but, they have rooms upstairs you can rent. The staff are highly mentionable here as well. Such pleasant and attentive wait staff that make your visit even that more of a special time. Weekly specials are presented on the wall as you enter and I highly recommend choosing them. Super clean seating area, and bathrooms. Covid safety measures are followed as well so no need to feel squeamish. 5 stars and a big 2 thumbs up!!!! read more

What earned this place the 1 star was it's staff. Bartender clearly serving friends and locals over customers patiently waiting to place an order. Manager lying about not doing take-out orders while we witnessed take-out orders being picked up. All around poor management of employees and staff who spent more time counting minutes to closing rather than serving customers effectively and efficiently to rotate more business through on a busy day. If you have five hours to waste being treated like a second class citizen and feel like paying for overpriced seafood, this is probably your spot...we didn't even wait for our table after strike three with the restaurant staff. read more

The food was hot and fresh. We only had a problem with a "restaurant dog" they say they have that kept approaching during our meal. My 3 year old is terrified of any dog any size no matter how sweet they can be. One of the servers said "she's harmless" that's besides the point. We had a screaming toddler for most of our evening for such a little thing that could've been resolved easily. Would we have gotten the same answer if one of us were allergic?.... Today the family wanted to go and celebrate my birthday so after a some reviews I decided to try this nice little spot on a marina! There was a bit of a wait but the manager and staff were super nice and touched based while we waited for patio seating. Once seated our amazing waitress Monica greeted us and took drink orders as we looked over the menu! The table decided to try the crab dip, which came out piping/bubbling hot with fresh pita chips, super yummy but I wish there was a bit more lump crab pieces for texture but overall it was very good. For my entree, I decided on the 1/2 Fried Company Seafood platter which consisted of fish, mini crab cake, scallops, shrimp and hush puppies and my choice of sides were the baked potato and slaw. The shrimp (not pictured were fried perfectly, my scallops were tender but I should have asked them to fry them a bit harder as well as the fish but everything was super fresh and hot. The mini crab cakes were flavorful but had a few pieces of shell, potato was good and the slaw and hush puppies were ok. Was showing some friends around the area and decided to take the ferry across the James and find somewhere for lunch. Pulled in here behind another car that was on the ferry with us. Slight wait for a table as they were finishing up with the lunch rush. My wife started with the she crab soup which was excellent. She then had the tuna bites appetizer which was perfectly cooked to medium rare and had a very tasty sauce. I had the rockfish basket special. Two large pieces of fish, both very flaky and moist. I ordered the fish and chips basket and was served 4 haddock fish sticks vice a filet. Service was very slow for a restaurant at less than 25% capacity. The crab soup was really good!! Chunks of crab and lots of old bay season. Husband said the raw oysters were very fresh. That's about it. The server was terrible. She only brought us out drinks and took our order. I had to go to the bar to ask for crackers, cocktail sauce and hot sauce for the oysters. We finished our drinks, including the water and didn't get anything until I had to again get up to go to the bar to request 2 beers and refill of waters. Food comes, no drinks. Half way through eating we finally got drinks. So on to the food. The surf and turf was okay. The steak under seasoned, no sear and over cooked (he wanted rare). The crab cake was just okay. Wish he had ordered broiled not fried. My bacon wrapped salmon was okay. Bacon near raw and too much sweet for the dish. Salmon on the inside was at least cooked good. The shrimp and chicken pasta was just okay too. I hate to leave a review like this. I only hope it was just a bad day for the staff. read more

Visited here for dinner while on vacay. Wait staff was fast, friendly, and informative. Crab puffs and hush puppies as an appetizer, crab puffs....chefs kiss! , hush puppies were ok. Boyfriend got a seafood platter and said- scallops, shrimp and crab cakes were awesome. He wasn't a fan of the fish, not bad, just basic fried fish. I got the ribeye, it was good, as was the baked potato. I had baked apples too, small portion, but didn't matter as I was full. Kids got pizza and chicken strips, both were as expected. We were looking for a seafood place after touring the Jamestown Settlement and almost didn't come to Surry Seafood based on the 3.5 star review and having to take the ferry across the river but WOW IT WAS WORTH IT. The food at The Surry Seafood was wonderful- we had the Boom Tiki Shrimp, the Company Seafood Platter (fried) (and split between my husband and I), my in laws shared the shrimp and ribs platter and our kids had one each of the flounder and the shrimp kids baskets. Every bit was just fantastic - some of the best seafood I've had in years. The kids ate without complaint and asked for more. We actually ordered a second Boom Tiki Shrimp because it was so good. I also had the Oyster Shooter - definitely a unique drink experience. To further enhance the meal, every seat in the restaurant has great views of the water. It was beautiful and exactly what we were wanting from a seaside restaurant. The waitress was also great - very helpful (she even asked my husband and I if the kids could have a drink refill before asking the kids #parentlife), nice, and responsive. Overall, I am 100% unsure why this place doesn't have a much better star rating - it was a GREAT experience and absolutely worth waiting for the ferry. I definitely recommend it to other families and couples and next time we're back in the Williamsburg area we will be making a special trip back to this restaurant! read more

First the good. The view. Really beautiful. And the service. Was pretty good. Now the bad, The food.... I wanted to like but no. Crab puffs were raw and had no crab taste at all. For $14? No. Husband had the flounder sandwich which he said was OK. Onion rings were also OK... but for the up charge.. he only got maybe 8 small ones. I got the salad and let's just say the lettuce had a lot of age on it. Was very surprised they would serve something like that. Sent it back.... was given a cup a soup as a sub... but it was almost 90 degrees. So um... no. But it was good. Last time I went around a year ago... I wasn't thrilled with it either. Great stop near the Jamestown Ferry. Simply gorgeous waterfront views, fun watching the boats, bald eagles and other birds at work back in the creek. Stopped in for brunch on a Sunday, staff couldn't have been nicer. We had the fried flounder sandwich and a crabcake- both were excellent. Fries were tasty although a bit greasy due to a low fryer oil temperature, but still managed to finish them. The flounder was the star, fresh and delicious. Paired this with a Bloody Mary which was properly made. Was also really nice to be able to go for a walk around the docks and waterfront after our meal before hitting the road. Great spot and looking forward to coming back in the warmer months so we can sit outside! read more
