a pitiful excuse for a seafood restaurant. There was enough oil on my seafood after it was fried that the fish could have swam away. I sent it back & the manager sent message back through the waitress that if they cooked another one it would be the same way. Notice I said manager sent us a message. We stayed at the Inn above the restaurant. We had flown into Richmond and were driving to Virginia Beach to visit family. We chose to stay at The Surry Seafod Co as the marina and restaurant were half way along the three hour drive. This place was cool- I'd like to preface this by saying I don't eat seafood (I went for a birthday). I ordered a side salad (very good ranch!!), onion rings, and hush puppies. I consider myself a hush puppy efecianado, and their hush puppy basket was $9.95- for that price, I would think I would get so many puppies, and they would be delicious. They were not the greatest, and I was super disappointed. I also got a creek drink (I can't remember the name, but it was with rum, banana, pinapple, etc...). My girlfriends got the shrimp basket with fries (very good fries!!) and the fish & chips with onion rings. If you like seafood, this place is for you. Beautiful setting on the marina. The server was a little slow - had to flag him down when we needed something. But when he came around he was very good. We just had drinks and appetizers for what we thought was going to be a light meal. Popped in here after being out in the heat touring the area. Only tried a few items but everything was good, especially the she-crab soup, which was surprisingly topped with a crab cake as a bonus. Could have better dessert options, in my opinion but had great appetizers. The server, whose name I can't remember, was sadly lacking. She wasn't friendly and every time we asked her for something she looked put out. My daughter had asked her for lemon for the waters and when walking to use the restroom she said the server tried to just hand them to her instead of bringing them to the table. It came with shrimp, crab cake, scallops and flounder with two sides. The scallops were my favorite- best I've ever had. The onion rings were also my fav. The Good: The ferry ride over, the cold drinks, the view, and the service. The bad: The food. Definitely. Way too salty, batter tasted like KFC, food had the taste of floor cleaner. Imagine if you cleaned the cooler with Lysol and closed the door. The odor would permeate the frozen food. That is what the shrimp, beans and scallops tasted like. The middle: crab cake was ok. Tons of crab, but was overcooked. This is the second time we visited this restaurant and the second time we've walked away disappointed. read more

We've been here before but it's been at least a year. What i can tell you is my June 30, 2019, visit was very, very good. The wife and I both had the special today. Blackened Tuna Steak with onions, peppers and a cream sauce. I don't believe this is on the normal menu. That's a shame because it was really good. Tuna was nicely cooked and was a very nice size steak. The sides of mashed red potatoes, green beans and my onion rings made a really good meal. I believe our servers name was Ester. Very friendly, personable lady. Kept out tea glasses full and checked on us maybe 3-4 times during the meal. We have always enjoyed coming here's for years now. They have the best she crab chowder around. Food always fresh and service great. The only reason they got 4 stars instead of 5 is because we are in a pandemic and I saw nothing special about the way they cleaned tables. Just wet cloth. They have wood boxes on table that holds menus, salt n pepper shakers. I would remove boxes till this has passed. I did notice they took menus away so hoping they are being cleaned and retuned to clean tables. But I didn't see the cleaning shakers. Also server asked if she could take our ketchup for another table and we said of course. She took directly to them :( They are also blocking off every other table for space but it is no where near6ft and I could swear they have added more tables since the last time. read more

We took the ferry over just to experience the ferry but we are so glad that we found this place to have dinner. Our server, Reesie really made the experience so much more enjoyable with her cheery disposition, her attention to detail, and the speed in which she delivers drinks and refills to the table! The food was pretty tasty...we ordered the stuffed mushroom as an appetizer and they were okay though the combination of mushroom and crab was a little off but the cheese made up for it!! I had blackened scallops with broccoli casserole. It was my first time having broccoli casserole and I have to admit I was impressed...it was yummy but a little oily as well...the scallops were tasty and had good spice but they could have come out a little more golden in color. Overall, the taste was good! My husband ordered the fish and chips and it looked like a lot of fried foods but it was good (I tried som!!!) I am very pleased with the outcome of Surry Sea Food. As a student of Surry High, I am able to order and dine in to a restaurant that is convient to me. A lot of us here in Surry Like the restaurant and want to see the company grow even more. I strongly suggest the bacon wrapped salmon and house salad. I will be returning to eat there often. The blue crab puffs were decadent, but the amount of crab was disappointing. Gimlet was great! This place is another hidden gem. Not many tourists come here, mostly locals, but it's such a great place for a relaxed family dinner. When I ate here there was some live music, and it was pleasant, and not to loud like most live singers. I got the Cajun Blackened chicken and shrimp pasta and it was amazing, but very filling. The outdoor seating and views are top notch! We love coming here in summer- it's good food and prompt, friendly service. They're dog friendly as well. One note to the owners- the one thing that would improve your restaurant? Please choose better music. Every time we're there, it sounds like it's someone's iPod shuffle that's going wild. We have a new plan for driving to the Outer Banks from St Louis. We drive farther the first day so we can take the Jamestown Ferry and have lunch at Surry Seafood. It makes for a very nice way to complete the trip. This time, the ferry was not running due to the weather and high water caused by winter storm Riley. We figured that out in time to come around from the west. Ms T will always order SSC's fried shrimp. This time it was the small platter, which is more than adequate for lunch with eight nice shrimp. She had their very good coleslaw and greens. Both are good sides. I switched to a flounder sandwich just to keep it a little smaller than the platter and it was excellent. The flounder were thinner pieces and perfect for a sandwich. I asked about the Red Rock Seafood chowder because they have never had it when we have been here. I was told that although it is still on the menu, it is no longer offered. Surry Seafood is highly recommended. We find it worth going a little out of the way for and we have not been disappointed. read more
