I started out with virtually no upper-body strength, a vague idea of what my goals were, and absolutely no idea of how to reach them. I am now visibly and measurably stronger (by orders of magnitude on some lifts), and I now feel like I know what my strengths and weaknesses are, what is achievable, and what I should focus on. In addition to having decades of experience doing this work, Jason has a background in physiology and he knows what he's talking about. He's also unusually good at sizing people up, not just physically but also mentally--how motivated they are, and how far and fast he can push them. I've seen other trainers use just one template for all of their clients, and plenty of them wind up miserable and quitting before too long. Jason actually listens, and while he'll never go easy on you, he'll tailor a routine around what it is you want to accomplish. Finally, he is exceptionally honest, flexible with time, not insistent about when you pay him, and he keeps excellent records. Carlos, who has been my personal trainer, is a GEM. At first, I thought about signing up for a Pilates class but I'm glad I found a more sustainable solution. He has somehow been able to teach me new routines that build on each other from session to session--and just four weeks in, I'm so much stronger physically (*and mentally*) than before. The focus on form and sharpening the mind-body connection is real. He's keen on making sure you retain how to train smart, as he teaches how/why each exercise will strengthen and stabilize my body (and what to avoid) so that I can keep going on my own with confidence. I really appreciate how he introduces new exercises (especially if they involve equipment/machines I've never used), breaks down what's happening, and is constantly checking in, so I know I'm not at risk of injuring myself. He's also been really non-judgmental and thoughtful about helping me develop realistic plans and practices about how to spend the other days of the week, especially given the fact that I don't always have access to equipment (and honestly, before working with Carlos, you would never have seen me near any gym equipment). Even if you don't have past injuries or chronic conditions that need to be accounted for, I think everyone would benefit from his injury prevention expertise and his ability to read what motivates you throughout sessions. I also got one of the best sports massages ever from Josh. He's incredibly knowledgeable and has wicked ability to holistically assess what's needed to provide deep, targeted relief rather than something superficial. Highly, highly recommend. (And you can also get massages without the training/gym classes too!) Other basics: WeRep has super clean facilities, all the gym equipment ever, showers/towel/soap/shampoo, massage table. Communication via email and text has always been prompt and straightforward. Only time can tell, but I think that deciding to sign up WeRep personal training might be one of the best investments I will ever make. I'm only here for the summer, so I envy those of you lucky enough to be here all year in DC. Today I train with him weekly to keep myself on track and continually challenged/engaged. Joel is always super attentive to form (much more so than many other trainers, who often get distracted as you perform an exercise, which defeats the point of hiring a trainer) as well as any questions/feedback. His instructions are always clear and he's incredibly upbeat, even in early morning sessions. If you want conversation to distract you, he's got it, but when that's not the case, he gets the hint and lets you focus. I've noticed that Joel seems to have a fairly diverse clientele in terms of gender and body type, which I think speaks to how well he can adapt to your needs and personal style. As a woman, I also appreciate that he's a doting husband and dad to two young girls, and carries a respect for women and their bodies into our conversations about body image.
