Making a stop at The Sweet Shoppe booth is one of the highlights for me and my son when visiting the Ky State Fair. It's become an annual tradition to get a caramel apple with peanuts. (Yes, even over a corn dog!) We compare every caramel apple to the one we get from The Sweet Shoppe. The green apple is huge and always fresh. Plus, the caramel is so thick and delicious. We appreciate they offer to slice and box it for us, which is much easier to eat than on the stick. Of course the shop is known for their fudge and just like their apples, it's unique to any we've tried before. Along with traditional flavors they offer more sweet varieties. I hope to make it to their shop one day! Or at least learn how to get their apples more often. read more

Consistent year after year winner of best sweet shop in Kentucky and it's located right here in little ole Hodgenville. They have so many varieties of homemade fudge that I could not even begin to list them all here. Literally an entire counter full, plus other homemade candies. They also have fresh baked goods, cakes, pies, cookies, etc. They have many varieties of ice cream and can make milkshakes, malts, sundaes, banana splits, literally any kind of ice cream dessert you want. They have several varieties of cones if you just want an old fashioned ice cream cone. During the height of the pandemic, once a week they would have a hot take away dinner from their food truck take away location. They constantly strive to give back to their community. Everything here is excellent and you can't go wrong no matter what you decide to try. It is definitely worth the trip to Hodgenville if you don't catch them at one of the many venues they attend each year, including having a presence at the Kentucky State Fair. read more

What a great ice cream place! Our first time here and I'm hoping to swing again next time we are in hodgenville, KY! Right in the middle of the roundabout of town! Excellent location! Plenty of options and other sweet treats to try! Only one person working the whole place! Very clean and decorated with pumpkins and mums! A very cute fall feel. Two giant wooden chairs so you can take a fun picture in them! The girl who was working there was very friendly and patient with us because we had a hard time deciding on what to order. My husband decided on a pistachio on a waffle cone --I'm not a pistachio person and once I tried it , I wanted to switch with my husband...that good! Simply delicious!!! The girl told us that this flavor was not a favorite...so I guess people have not tried it yet!? People... try this flavor -it's delicious!!! I had a waffle bowl with a scoop of coconut, banana pie and a peanut peanut something I can't remember the name-sorry. But I'm still thinking of the pistachio and how much I loved it! They definitely need more employees and a consistent schedule, I never know if they're open and when they are it's usually only one employee and several customers it takes forever to get one item. The most recent time I went there was one employee and 4 customers and the employee was sweating into the Icecream and it took 30 minutes for 2 milkshakes once we received the milkshakes the lids were not all the way on due to employee being in a rush and I spilled milkshake all over me, love the place just could use some help read more

A friend and I stopped here after a few hours of exploring the nearby Abraham Lincoln birthplace. While there was a bit of a line, the 3 employees working weren't the friendliest. They were all a bit short in helping not only us but the other customers as well. I got a blue moon shake and my friend got a scoop of ice cream. The treat was nice after a long morning of hiking but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. I was lucky enough to meet the maker, Patrick Durham, at the Indiana Artisan Marketplace and sample from his 40 (that's right, 4-0) flavors of sweet, blissful, homemade fudge. I may love chocolate, but I was most blown away by The Sweet Shoppe's BANANA fudge swirled with peanut butter on top. If only the actual fruit tasted like Pat's Fat Elvis-inspired concoction! In the words of The King himself: "You [Banana Fudge] have made my life complete, and I love you so." Needless to say, I'm a huge fan of this fudge. But they aren't just about fudge, the gourmet apples, the pecan turtles, lemon bars, magic cookie bars, the ice cream and shakes..oh my!! This summer they had a trailer set up at a remote location set up selling ice cream, shakes and sundaes! Unfortunately for my waistline, I tried the bourbon sundae and the funnel cake sundae, both are "slap your momma" good! (We don't really slap our momma's, don't worry)! My mom demanded an ice cream, so vehemently, that she made a very illegal almost U-turn into the parking lot. As I laughed (and kissed the ground a little), I sized up the joint, I wasn't expecting much. I was expecting hard, bland fudge, stale cupcakes, and lackluster ice cream (here is looking at you Mayfield Dairy). However, I am so pleased to report, that I was dead wrong. When my mom and I, walked in we were promptly greeted by two, very nice women. They beck9ned us closer to the ice cream counter along the far side of the establishment. The second counter which is adjacent to the ice crwam counter is chock filled with fudge. And I mean FILLED WITH FUDGE. Flavors include apple pie, chocolate, pumpkin pie, peanut butter chocolate, turtle, vanilla, pecan praline, cherry amaretto, peanut butter, caramel swirl, cherry cordial, and the elvis. It was probably single- handedly the largest selection of homemade fudge I have encountered in 26 years. What sets this fudge apart is how soft and moist it is. A common trwnd when selling fudge is to display it in large hunks, occassionally sawing off a hunk when needed. The problem with this method is that the hunk of fudge is largely exposed to the air and becomes very hard and dry. The Sweet Shoppe is a step ahead! Here, they individually wrap each pre-portioned piece of fudge is plastic wrap, so that the fudge isn't dried out and hard. Not only is it the perfect size, but it is soft and moist. The lady talked me into the Elvis, which is a banana peanut butter flavored fudge. She said I wasn't allowed to leave without having a sample. I was so over the moon with this banana bread-esque textured peanut butter surprise taste explosion, I bought it on the spot. No regrets. My mom got the southern buttered pecan ice cream, which is a flavor she normally doesn't order. But it was so delicious that she couldn't help herself. Again, the ladies gave me a free taste, and i tried the cherry cordial fudge flavor, which truely was one of the most well balanced flavors of ice cream I have had. Perfect amount of fruit to chocolate ratio. Creamy, but not overpoweringly so. As good as the ice cream was, I was captivated by the caramel pecan candy mound. Yup, they make their own candies too. I've seen my fair share of pecans and caramel, I'm sure you have too at places like Savannah's in Nashville. But what caughr my atyention, was the rich, beautiful color of the caramel. As glorious as it seemed, i still didn't expect it to be as good as it was. The caramel was pitch-perfect for candy. It was gooey without being like glue, hard enough to encase the pecans, and soft enough to bite without much struggle. A good caramel is really difficult to make and even more difficult to find. If you think I am exaggerating, shut your mouth, and go try to make some. If you already know how difficult it is, save yourself the trouble and go buy some from this place! Because they do it right. I can't vouche for their cupcakes because they had sold out. But everything I tried was really, really delicious. And the people were super helpful. The only negative about the store, was the cady case had a fly buzzing around inside. It landed and was crawling on one of the pecan caramel candies. Thats not entirely sanitary, but insectst are pesky, and for the most part, the Sweet Shoppe is clean. Final word: great ice cream, great fudge, great caramel. Stop in for a Twinkie split, a milkshake, or anything else sweet and delicious and you won't be sorry! read more

Delicious little ice cream and fudge shop. Get your favorite flavor served up in a cup or cone. Or have a hand spun milkshake made fresh from any flavor of ice cream on hand (I think they had about 12 - 16 flavors). 2 of us had cups and 3 had milkshakes. All were delicious. Portions were generous and inexpensive compared to ice cream shops at home. We didn't try any of the fudge, but it looked really good. They also had some other yummy looking homemade treats...basically something to tempt any sweet tooth. There are 4 or 5 small table you can sit and enjoy your treat inside, or go out and sit on the benches in the roundabout and take in the local history. There was 1 person working in the shop when we were there. She was really nice and friendly and patient with our indecisive crew.
