I'm loving this place right now. I'm not really the type to party, but this is where I go with a friend on a weeknight to have a drink and an extended conversation. The bartender, Justin, is super friendly, always keeping up with the drinks, and the drinks themselves are half the price of the bar across the street. The outdoor patio seating is perfect on a nice evening. It has a mellow, relaxed vibe and everyone seems so calm. I love it. FYI: They don't serve food though, so 21+ only. read more

I thought this place would be much nicer than it was. Bartenders were snarky, rude and unhelpful. When I stood up for my friend after her $20 was eaten by the jukebox, the bartender took my drink away and kicked me out for saying that I would write a bad review. AMAZING PLACE WITH AN AMAZING DECK! Super low key spot! Great for sunny days. Right across from Hanes Park so always perfect scenery. Mostly an older crowd so relax and everyone is super friendly. You will meet all kinds there! Construction workers to private owners to CEO's! They have a few beers on tap but the best kinds. Some of the most beautiful and friendly bartenders you will ever meet. Truly one of the best bars in town. I will start by saying it's a little dive bar with all the regulars in town, we come here at least two times a week now (which I guess makes us regulars too now). Justin is an absolutely wonderful bartender!! He has always made sure to make me exactly what I want to drink even when I'm having an off day and don't feel like something with a lot of liquor flavor (if that makes sense). The highlight of this bar has to be the friendly staff, the fabulous outside deck (great for people watching) and the fact they make their own pickles!! I had a Bloody Mary today and I told Justin to do whatever he wanted to it, well he did and let me say it was the best dang Bloody Mary I have ever had. He brought me out some pickles with it and I was blown away. I am an avid pickle lover and these were on the top of my list of some of the best pickles I have ever had! They have some decent beers on draft from what I see and a great range of liquor! Anything I've asked for Justin has been able to make for me! It's a bare-bones bar, but they're good at what they do. The inside has a clean, modern feel that reminds me of places in Dallas. It's by no means pretentious though, and I always seem to enjoy the music, which tends to be pop through the decades. They have a few tall tables, a few couches, and a couple flat screen TVs. Also, there's a patio for warm summer nights. I think they have a good group of regulars, which seem to be comprised of Wake students and yuppies (or at least young people), and a friendly staff. Another bar regulated by the NC state rules of requiring memberships to enjoy drinks at non-eating establishments. I'm a member. Probably cost me a buck to join, maybe it was free. I can't remember. Cleaner and less of a dive than the other half dozen bars in and around the West End like Opera House, Black Bear, Gatsby's, etc. It has a decent outdoor space and good location across from Hanes Park. Pros: I've remarked at the "good pour" i've received on numerous occasions. Good deck on warm nights. Cons: I've seen cops hang out across the street near closing time so beware. No good noshing joints nearby. College crowd on certain nights (although that could be a "pro" depending on your outlook). read more

100% of the time I come here I have a good time. I usually come here for social gatherings and general Tom foolery with friends, but occasionally I'll stop by for a beer and people watching via the outside deck. The beer is always cold, the bartenders are always nice and I never have to worry about a thing while I'm here at my 2nd favorite neighborhood bar. read more

I usually only visit this bar in the Warmer months to enjoy their patio. However, if there are a lot if people smoking I go inside or leave. Nothing against cigarette smokers, I can't help it gives me a headache so I remove myself from it. The inside is pretty laid back with some couches and bar stools if I remember correctly. A few tv's and maybe darts. The service was pretty fast and they serve liquor and beer. I didn't really want to sit in the couches though, it was dingy in there and the bathrooms needed refreshing. If you live downtown it would be easy to walk to and go from bar to bar. Be careful at night though, there have been some shady things happen anywhere downtown. Use the buddy system, it's what we do when we walk from bar to bar. read more

The tap is a treasure to West End! The Tuesday night trivia has been a staple to my weekly rituals for the past 3 years. The newest trivia host, Lucy, makes you feel welcome, at home, and never fails to remember my name or drink of choice. The Tap at West End is a far cry from what the location used to be with the similar but different name West End Tap Room. The new owners and the new upfit about a year ago brought the great location to life. The staff always seems friendly and welcoming, but they don't bother you when you just want to have some time with friends. Attentive, but unobtrusive, which is a rarity these days! The prices are moderate and the crowd's a mix of young professionals with some Wake Forest students looking for the old watering hole. But make no mistake about it, The Tap leans toward a higher end late night bar, but without being stuffy about it.
