Past San Francisco romps have made me bow down to the power of tea. Before I sat in teahouses in the Bay I knew nothing about tea's holistic qualities, nor did I know anything about the culture of tea. Did you know that a brick of two hundred year old Chinese Oolong tea can sell for between £20000-£100000? Neither did I until the sages in San Fran showed me the way. Now that I'm indoctrinated I know good tea when I see it and The Teahouse has good stock in abundance. This is the one stop shop for anything tea related. They sell loose tea, bagged tea, tea sets (which include teapots, cups, saucers, etc.) and even tea keychains. You can come in here with a fiver and leave with two great brands of bagged tea, or you can come in with £1000 and buy a quarter of some century old Oolong and a really nice tea time set. Even if you're not really that much of a tea nut just come in here and have a whiff. It smells so good. read more

This place sells all kinds of tea known, but its not cheap stuff. If you like some strange herbal teas, this is probably the only place to get them fresh. it also makes for a very posh looking present from Covent Garden. More than the tea though, I like the mugs and teapots! You can get specialised cups with a seperate strainer and a lid for brewing fresh tea for one, and still keeping it warm. The stacked shelves make for very pleasant browsing too. The aroma is faintly spiced inside the shop, and its a strangely relaxing feeling. Like entering a zen garden in an oriental setting. It makes me think that drinking tea in a formal ceremony (in a kimono?! cool) might actually be a lot of fun. read more

Being spoiled by the incredible Tee Gschwendner chain in Germany (and online shopping in the US from their affiliate site) and David's Tea in Toronto, I went into The Tea House expecting great things - after all this is Britain where tea is sacred. While their selection is very good, I was disappointed that many of their green and black teas are sold in clear cellophane bags that are not resealable! Light and air can deteriorate the quality and taste of tea over time - you're supposed to store teas in airtight tins. Also, many of their herbal teas (ex. rooibos, chamomile) are sold as tea bags, even though the little sampler for you to smell has them as loose teas. I felt deceived when I opened up the package and saw teabags inside (they put the herbal teas in opaque bags... ) The accessories were also disappointing - far too many tea balls (which I despise) and not enough quality steeping apparel. The pots and teacups are interesting, although most of it seemed like Asian kitsch to me. There are a few things in my tea pantry from The Tea House, but overall this shop was a let down. read more

I am so terribly British, as evidenced by my absolute obsession with a lovely cup of tea. I can't function without a nice brew in the morning, earl grey, breakfast, nettle, green, chai, Lapsang Souchong - however it comes. So imagine my joy in this shop - kid in a candy store springs to mind. They have a huge selection, and you can even make your own combining different leaves. The staff are enthusiasts, and really know their tea. They can recommend the right tea for you. They obviously also sell lovely teapots and mugs. I have to say I agree completely with Patty L's comments about the way the teas are packaged. I am always wary when I go into a tea shop and everything is in clear cellophane. Especially when getting home and discovering that the bags were not air sealed, just folded over several times and clamped with a large twist tie. Even so, I just moved into a new place, and wanted some new teas to grace my very tiny pantry. I picked up a bag of Genmaicha(packaged in cellophane) and a Marzipan flavoured Black Tea(in a opaque bag). As for the tea ware, I was a little disappointed. I too felt like there were a lot of items that the focus was on aesthetics and not necessarily on function. Despite the very central and touristic location I find this an excellent store with unlimited selection of tea from all over the world. It is more than you would need your daily cuppa, you can find any sort and quality there is! I am a big fan of green tea, and often pop in to this shop to get new sorts. Prices are affordable and and the staff is really helpful. What is nice that they also have good selection of thing you need for preparing tea, as I have been running around several department stores to find a proper teapot and finally found it from here. read more

I've been on a tea binge lately, and although my trip to London is for business, I just couldn't resist checking out some local tea shops. My first stop was another place in Covent Garden, and it may well be that my experience there has colored my feelings about The Tea House. The Tea House is perfectly lovely, and they do seem to have a nice selection of tea. Prices are reasonable, although I don't mind paying a few cents/pence more to have my tea sold to me in a small tin instead of a bag. Some of the teas smelled more of the added flavors than of tea, which isn't always a good thing. But, to each his own. The shop was quite busy, so customers were pretty much left alone as staffers brought supplies into the store and carried them upstairs. I settled on a Vanilla tea and a Marzipan tea. When I returned to my hotel, I went straight to the lounge and got a pot of hot water to make some of the Marzipan tea. It is quite good. Nice flavoring, a bit on the lighter side, so if you add milk, don't add too much. Very enjoyable. read more

I stumbled in to the Tea House quite by accident as I strolled through Covent Gardens. As a tea lover, I was intrigued at the quaintness of the exterior. Once inside however, my eyes were simply overwhelmed (in a good way) at the selection of teas, tea accessories, and all things tea related. The salespeople were quite nice, and glad to explain the differences of the teas and provide a taste test for you. This place was cozy inside, and larger than one might expect once inside the store. There are simply walls of tea and more walls of tea items to brew the perfect cup. I came away with orange oolong and jasmine flower tea; two of my favs. While the prices are not cheap, you are getting quality tea leaves....nothing quite like it in the states unless you visit a chinese tea shop. Even then, your choices will likely be limited when it comes to whole leaf teas. read more

I absolutely cannot say enough good things about The Tea House! I was visiting London from NYC and was excited to find an independent loose leaf tea shop. The staff are so nice and helpful. They were so patient with me as I had a lot of questions on their huge selection of teas. The Early Grey Superior is the best Earl Grey I have ever had, hands (tea cups?) down. The have an astonishing amount of decaf loose leaf tea, which is really rare in a specialty tea store. The rose buds you can add to any tea are lovely and the orange turmeric decaf tea is a delight in the evening. Don't be put off by the trendy location - this place is the read deal! read more

The Tea House is located very near to Covent Garden. They sell a big variety of teas, from commercial ones to really nice and special loose leaf teas. They have some nice varieties that are difficult to find in other places and the prices are reasonable, for instance red tea that is not easy to find in other stores. In the first floor they sell accessories related to the tea: tea pots, books, cups, etc. The staff is sometimes a bit rude and it is a pity because it is the only negative point of this really nice shop. I love this little shop. As you walk in the smell of all different sorts of teas wafts into your nose and the shop is usually toasty warm. It is a small shop which rather than being a drawback causes the shop to be cosy. They sell great variety of chinese tea. I just got some flower tea from them and they make great presents for girls. To all guys out there, your girlfriends will love them. Basically, the are flowers rolled up into a ball and the sowly open up in hot water. you can drink the tea and admire the flower 'blooming' at the same time. There are other stuff such as teapot and cups and varies accesories too. It is a great place to look around and gain knowledge of teas. read more

I am perplexed with some of the criticism in the other reviews of the Tea House. It seems many people get lost in all these strange thoughts, e.g. use of milk with your tea--Heaven Forbid! Anyway, if you look at the true quality of the tea leaves, and the variety, this place is a 5 star guarantee. The perfect place for tea's person or Xmas gift

My sister sent me to the tea house in search of a particular loose leaf tea she'd purchased there last fall. Although they were out of the kind she had wanted, they had a very nice selection of other loose leaf black teas (as well as green, rooibos, etc). I purchased a marzipan black tea, as well as a choco black tea, both of which smell incredible. At 3.50 per package, they were also very well priced. marks and spencer has a pretty good tea selection, and i was looking for a certain kind of tea (lapsang souchang) that i had seen in a manchester m&s, but alas couldn't locate in any london m&s. i went to the tea house to see if they had it, and of course they did. i ended up spending 20 minutes browsing their amazing tea collection and sniffing my way around the store. if i had more time i would have stayed longer. it's a quaint little place and has all of your tea needs. read more

One of my favorite haunts in all of London. The vanilla tea (bags or loose) have become one of the best sellers and frequently sell out. Unfortunately word got out how amazing the vanilla tea is! A huge selection of teas all neatly packaged up. The Tea House also sells every imaginable accessory - from one-cup teapots to strainers of all kinds, tea mugs, tea tins, jams, stirrers, sugars. The Tea House is split over two levels, although it's quite small, and offers tea leaves and tea bags to suit different tastes. A lot of the tea is from Asia, and there is every flavour imaginable. Even if you are not a tea drinker I would still recommend a visit here if you are in the area. The shop is small but has a lovely feel and environment I enjoyed just wandering around and sniffing the different aromatic sample tea leaves and reading about the different properties. This is such a lovely shop, I came here looking for a gift and a little something for myself and I was so spoilt for choice, being a tea lover myself it is so nice to find a shop like this. They stock tons of herbal teas, chinese, japanese, indian tea etc, little recipe books for afternoon treats, gorgeous teapots, novelty tins....The prices aren't that bad either considering this shop is in one of London's hot spots Covent Garden. Most people seem to like this place- and on my first trip, I was interested! I bought some loose leaf tea and some other tea related items for gifts. Unfortunately I really don't like the taste of the tea I bought- which has put me off this place. It's expensive when you consider that PG Tips taste better, and I think that you are better trying food halls for loose leaf tea. read more

Especially good if you're looking for something a little different - flower teas, blended tea, infusions, green tea and a huge range of caffeine free herbal tea too. Totally loved the scent of tea all around! One my favourite places to buy tea in London. Especially if you're looking for loose leaf tea, they have a great selection. They also have beautiful imported tea pots and other accessories; and the prices are great (a 100g bag of tea cost you on average 4-5 pounds). I also really like that they sell dried fruit mixes ( try Kir Royale) and flowers, such as rose buds and camomile, which you can brew by themselves or mix into your tea. read more

I came across The Tea House purely by chance - though I must say I am very grateful to have done so! The staff are very warm and welcoming; the blonde woman at the till allowed me to taste a great many teas and gave me detailed descriptions before I settled on some lovely Jasmine pearls and a funny little robot tea leaf brewer. Yes it's a little pricy, but honestly, The Tea House is hardly the place to go if you're looking for Tetleys or Twinings! Definitely a place to visit for all those who enjoy tea; and even if you don't, the atmosphere makes it a destination in itself! read more

Very low quality. Staff were friendly, but selection was a bit disappointing. More importantly, the tea I purchased was of abysmal quality, particularly the milky oolong. I brewed my first pot before inspecting the leaves, but I knew something was wrong from the first sip. Took a look at the leaves and found about 40% stems, with the balance mostly broken. A significant number of the leaves even had what appeared to be burns and did not properly unfurl. The tea was fit only for compost. The other teas I bought were not quite as bad, but certainly low quality and do not justify the mark-up of the this "posh" shop. Stay away from here. read more
