Pleasantly Surprised. I stayed here for a wedding (wedding was not here, though), and was expecting everything to be super old and everyone to be super strict. To my surprise, the rooms were very well kept, nice, and did not feel dated (outside of the picture). They will search your car, but arent looking for like a bag of weed you have tucked away in your bag, which is great that they're not looking to ruin your life over something like that. You can also walk around the West Point campus easily, which is beautiful. Would stay again read more

While I'm on a roll tonight and awake from a flashing light, people yelling in the hallway and people yelling outside over some sort of truck, I thought I would rate the hotel in which my family sleeps around me right now. I'm awake because of a flashing light and wondering whether I should call the front desk. It's Memorial Day weekend and I'm on the West Point Academy grounds (I think) during their graduation weekend. Not to mention, this was a last minute booking because we had only reserved 2 nights at Bear Mountain Inn and wanted to extend our long weekend (they were booked up). Take that with you as you read on. Our room was supposed to be ready at 2:30 and when we arrived at 4:30, they needed 5 more minutes (whilst my kids melted down in the lobby). Valet didn't approach us when we drove our car up. We had to use valet bc we just hiked for a long time and couldn't walk with our bags up the very steep flights of stairs to get to this castle on a hill. Check-in was inefficient and my husband stood on the line for what felt like 20 minutes. The general manager was really nice. The beds are pretty comfortable. The military police checking ID at the gate in front of the hotel is at once comforting and frightening. Getting questioned by the MP when you're just looking for parking (before you realized there was valet) and shamed by them for missing the entrance to the parking lot was super special. And now the flashing light. More banging out the window. Doors slamming. I would try it again on a non- holiday weekend. Maybe. read more

1 star is to many if you ask me! I was in the main dining room in the hotel on Tuesday morning and was disappointed in the service. When I made a complaint to the manager, Ginoh I believe his name was, he was extremely rude telling me maybe I should go to McDonald's if I wanted food my way right away! I have never in all my life been spoken to with such disrespect! The rest of the staff was extremely helpful and appalled themselves at his behavior. Planning an Event or Wedding Here? You better first visit this place a couple of times before going to contract and just stroll through the dining rooms of ongoing weddings. The food is low tier which is what can be expected for the price. My complaint is not necessarily the poor food because you get what you pay for. My complaint is for how run down and dated this antiquated building is. We had an event there and the air conditioning just could not keep up with with the demand. Many guests were removing their jackets and fanning themselves off throughout the entire evening. Everything about this place just reeks of an old building in desperate need of being torn down and rebuilt. I don't think a major renovation would do any help here. I attended a surprise birthday party at the Crest Room - one of the hotel's ballrooms - and it's a great place for a reception especially if you want to dance. The well-kept hardwood floors are a joy to dance on, and the 20' ceiling means that no guest will ever feel cramped. The food - buffet style for this party - was decent but nothing to write home about. Service was good, however. read more

I arrived at this beautiful hotel and was looking forward to my training, after checking in to my room and started unpacking I found out that I forgot to throw my belt in my bag back in California. Now this is a military base and the nearest place to buy a simple belt was 20 mnts. I decided to ask the front desk for help. That's when I met Mark, he immediately started thinking of ways he could help. He talked to a lady that was working in the back office and came back saying "sir we can help you" Kluwanie helped me and was the sweetest person. She gave me a ride in her personal car and I was able to get that damn belt and attend my training. This is what I call going out and beyond. Thank you guys for making my day. read more

Visited for lunch for the first time. Pleased with the buffet. Fish, steak, pasta, potatoes, everything was good. Everyone from the receptionist to the waiter were awesome. We sat outside on a very nice spring day and the view of the Hudson made it a perfect lunch. No complaints. read more

I really like the Thayer hotel itself. Especially the gym there. If it weren't for that gym I would not have just spent $8,000 on a new elliptical exercise machine. My cardio workout fiscal exuberance aside, this is one of the nicest places to stay in the West Point / Highland Falls area. I am sorry to say that I cannot recommend the MacArthur's River View restaurant. It was expensive and the food was not even average. I may stay at the Thayer again, but I will not eat at this restaurant again. read more

Well, I don't usually post reviews, but the food was so bad at the restaurant at this hotel that I feel it's necessary to say something. We had a party of 11 people and most of the people in our party were not happy. My niece's burger was extremely raw, she asked for medium. My Cuban panini had way too much mustard on it to the point that it just tasted horrible. My other niece had a shrimp wrap or something that she said was horrible. All our desserts that should have been nicely warm or hot arrived cold. I was very surprised because the appearance of the hotel is beautiful and they are catering to service men and women and their families....so what's up? Idk! I would never go back to eat there. It didn't seem like they served freshly prepared food, also. read more

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at the Thayer after a West Point football game. The room was lovely - we chose a room facing campus so we wouldn't be bothered by the train noise as noted in some other reviews. The room was beautiful and well appointed. The building itself is lovely and historic, and the grounds are so scenic with gorgeous views of the Hudson and the last remnants of fall colors. Brunch was awesome and decadent, staff was friendly. Really all so positive. I forgot to bring a cell charger and our server in the Patton room went out of her way to hunt one down for me. So helpful and nice! Great service by all of the staff. The room was awesome. Nice touch having pictures of the general and his exploits in the room. While the trains did make noise , it was not obtrusive and quick. What a wonderful piece of history- the Thayer Hotel at West Point! This historic hotel is tucked on the edge of the grand Hudson river, just inside the Thayer gate of USMA. The lobby is charming and ornate - and the grounds are expansive and full of views. The hotel is filled with wonderful artifacts about our countries military history - a must see for history buffs exploring West Point. The Thayer Hotel was originally completed in 1926, and the new updated renovations are consistent with the hotels rich history. The location is a short walk to the West Point visitor center and museum. The staff are very helpful in every point of our stay, and made every effort to make our stay first class. If your plans include a week end get-a-way, a football game, a wedding or celebration, YOU will not be disappointed. read more

Enjoyed a one night stay using Living Social voucher. Hotel nicely kept, staff helpful and friendly, good bedding, clean bath. Would not recommend food or kitchen service though waitstaff/bartender were as frustrated as the diners with whatever was happening behind the scene. The one thing missing was freeWi-Fi. We were so disappointed in the brunch at the Thayer Hotel. We went there for our daughter's birthday. It was overcrowded, very noisy and the service was OK at best. The waffle iron broke down and they only had one available to use. There was a long line for the waffles, and they would only give you 1/4 per person. What looked like a manager, was working on it with a screwdriver, trying to get it to work, while they were cooking with the only other one. We were offered Mimosas, but did not realize until later that soda and Bloody Mary's were also available. That was never mentioned or offered. The food was OK. Not great, just OK. However, when we left, we got in our car and realized we had been overcharged (one adult price). We immediately called and were told they would have a manager call us back. We called the next day and the day after that. No one ever called us back. Out of total frustration, I called and asked for the general manager and - yes, you guessed it, they never called back. It was a horrendously expensive meal and we never did receive our money back. We recommend you do not waste your time or money on the Thayer brunch. read more

This is the second event we hosted here. The food and location (we were in the Bradley Room) were amazing. The first time I had an event at the Thayer, Stacey was the event coordinator and she was WONDERFUL! However, this time around I had another young lady who totally dropped the ball. The venue was not set up as I had spoken with her about the day before. In addition, she never communicated and/or checked that all my food items were in place for my seated lunch, which led to a scramble by the wait staff and a lot of stress for me! So disappointed because I love this location! Like I said, Stacey is great at what she does. I'm not sure about the other event coordinators, but I can tell you that Alexandra S.has a lot to learn about customer service and event planning. read more

I stayed here for one night back in June (2015) for a wedding reception held at the hotel. The food was great and the service was pretty good. Several people at my table ordered the steak, and we had to beg for just one knife to share, which was just, well weird. The hotel is right near train tracks - and they make you literally sign and initial a form in SIX places stating that you are aware of the noise and you won't complain/ask for compensation/etc. - but to be honest - I did not find it that loud or offensive. Also, just an FYI - the hotel is literally THROUGH the West Point gates - so be prepared to show ID every time you go in and out! read more

First, pls remember to bring ID w/you. The hotel is located in West Point on the base itself. Secondly, the hotel parking is across the street frm the hotel, and you have to walk up the hill or the steps to the hotel entrance. Now, my experience at check in was marred by a very indiscreet and unprofessional customer service rep. Right in front of my partner, the CSRep, looks at me and says, "You look very familiar, have you been before? I've seen you here before". Mind you this was my first time at the Thayer. I was embarrassed and thought what is my partner thinking. Talk abt unprofessional!!! Even if I had been there everyday, it's her job to be discreet. Very poor judgement. As for the Zulu Lounge, they need new seat cushions, their wait staff is slow, un attentive and the food could be better tasting. We sat down at a table and after pressing the call button several times, my b/f had to get up and walk to the bar. The music is limited and barely audible. The smoking section has a broken chair, don't bother thinking abt relaxing w/a good cigar. Ice machine are not located on every floor. The hotel itself is historical, nice and the room was clean. But the lack of professionalism on the part of the front desk clerk makes me not want to come back. read more

Do not stay here if sleeping is considered part of your evening. Trains every 30 to 60 minutes with four lovely horns each and every time. Hotel mentions occasional train, noise and even has you sign an acknowledgment. What they don't tell you is that is constant. Hotel is pretty, but really who cares if you can't sleep a wink. It pains me to say, but I was disappointed with my wedding here - here's why: THE GOOD: Let me start by saying that everything leading up to the wedding was GREAT. The service was truly phenomenal. My catering manager, Joanna, was just so nice and helpful. She was so patient when I forgot to get her my guest count and itinerary on time. She knew all of the vendors and helped me select the ones best for me. They are lucky to have her on staff! The bridal suite is comped on the wedding night, but my parents stayed there and put me and my husband in the Presidential Suite - WAY better. It had a small kitchen, 1.5 baths, a large sitting room and bedroom, and a dining room. The views were amazing. Having two entrance doors was also very convenient. One goes directly to the bedroom and the other to the entry hallway. Yes, it is that large. There was great natural light for photography, so that was really fantastic. We used the pullout coach bed and an extra cot to sleep all of my bridesmaids the night before, so all of the spaces were well-utilized. I was disappointed that the room didn't have as much decor as I would have expected, given the history of West Point. It was too bare, and we had to make last-minute purchases of flowers and trinkets to decorate it. The grounds were gorgeous. We had the entire basement level that opens up to the river. Although I never went in the Pershing Room for the Cocktail Hour, and never tried the hors d'oeuvres, my guests could not stop talking about how delicious everything was. They said the same about the dinner. I was so excited that I hardly ate anything, but I am so happy my guests enjoyed the catering. It was truly top-notch. We have some fabulous photography from there. The shuttle service for our guests to and from the church was so convenient. Guests shared that it made travel very easy for them, despite the fact that it was Acceptance Day [which they should have told us when we booked the weekend]. The driver was late with the second shuttle when we went to do pictures, so it was annoying that we had to wait for him at the church. It decreased our photo time by 30 minutes. However, overall, I highly recommend the shuttle service if you are getting married at one of the chapels, because driving around campus is confusing for first-time guests. THE BAD: First, I had guest welcome bags for all guests. One per guest, not one per room. These specific instructions were reviewed with staff. They had the roster of my guests. The staff did not give out welcome bags to most of my guests. I was PISSED. Plus, those bags had items that were custom picked and perishable. We threw away money. They also had the "breakfast brunch" card there. Breakfast was paid for by my parents. But, since most guests didn't get their bag, they paid for their own brunch. How embarrassing is that? I could not believe that my guests didn't get the amenities I put together for them. Of course, no one informed me, but when we checked out, we picked up almost all of them... when I asked what happened, they said no one asked for them... WTF. Thank you for embarrassing my family and making us look cheap. Second, the bridal party suite off of the ballroom. It was supposed to have an attendant so no one could go in or out besides the bridal party. Well, two people had sex in there, and they weren't in the bridal party. How do I know this? My sister walked in on them as they were trying to sneak back out. Gross. Truly. It even had a key code, and I had asked for it so my bridal party members could self lock and go in and out, but it was not provided to us. What was the point of that "private" room? Third, the way dinner was handled KILLED the vibe of the evening. I wish I were exaggerating. First, the room was too hot. I understand it is August and all, but I had my older guests dying because of the heat. It was really unfortunate. I even asked to have the AC on its coldest, and it still was too hot. Now, here's how the dinner setup killed my party. As soon as we walked out after our introduction, we went right into the first dance. We prompted our DJ to get everyone on the dance floor immediately, and they did! Dinner was over an hour away, so we wanted a party. Well, unfortunately, the maitre d'hotel had everyone sit back down so they could take filet vs fish entree orders. When I arranged dining, I specifically proposed pre-selecting to avoid this, and they guaranteed this was better. I was livid. It killed people's buzz. We were just sitting around,waiting to order. We entered thirty minutes after people sat in the reception hall. God only knows why dinner orders weren't taken then. It really bothers me, still. The vibe was just ruined. Again, I predicted the problem, requested a solution, and was assured the problem wouldn't occur, but it did. read more

Booked this hotel for USMA Graduation. Rooms were dirty and the staff rude. When we were checking out the housekeeping staff stood outside our room door rushing us out while mocking and insulting us. Not a 5 star experience. My husband, our 21 month old son and I stayed in a room on the 2nd floor. I have to say, that at first glance, the room seemed very nice. Great view and very plush bed, but after 10 minutes we quickly realized that it was not all great. There were cords and electric wires everywhere, which made this room not very kid- friendly. The door did not have a "do not disturb" sign. There was room service available, yet no menu in the room. After calling the front desk, they sent me the photocopy of their main restaurant menu, and again was disappointed. The items on the menu were boring at best and very overpriced. I am a chef a cannot understand why the food is so boring if the people behind this place are students and alumni from CIA. Another thing that was a huge inconvenience was the internet access. Boy, what a rip-off! They charge $10 per device for every 24 hours, and if you do not pay it, you are doomed because the there is no service for miles- not a joke, miles! As a matter of principal, we did not pay it. We are in the year 2014 and these are expected amenites for a hotel that claims to have a 5 star service. I have been in hotels all around the world and that is unacceptable. If the Holiday Inn has these amenites then they should too. I wonder if they tried making our stay a pain in our rear because we came in with a groupon? The attitude of the service people seemed very cold and as if they did not really cared how we were. Upon leaving, the front desk lady did not bother to ask how our stay was, which every hotel I have ever been to does. The worst part of our stay was when we went out for dinner (we were so disppointed with the hotel, we did not want to eat there), and when leaving we were stopped at a check point, and our car was searched, but the two cars on front of us were not- I was also the only visible minority at the hotel. I would like to point out that I have never felt discriminated against until that night. As if all these things were not enough, every service person at the Thayer Hotel expected a tip, for what was obviously a lousy service. Everyone's attitude was of arrogance, as if they were not there to provide a service. Needless to say, we will never be returning to this place. It was an absolute nightmare and we wish we had never gone in the first place, but the history of the place is nice, so one big star for that :) read more

Great place, lots of history. We went for a wedding and ended up in the hotel bar at the end of the night. The rooftop bar closes at 10PM so we didnt get to go out there at all. Our room was cute, although the TV didnt work and there was an ant farm in the bathroom. We did get a small discount after complaining about these things. read more

Very beautiful lobby, lovely tavern and dining room. The room was underwhelming to say the least. At $250 a night we were told the room would be furnished with a flat screen TV and an Ipod docking station. We arrived in November but renovations would take place in the spring. Duty and Honor start at the Academy gate not the Thayer. Save your money! Stay off post and with the savings take a cadet to lunch. At least they will be appreciativel read more

The Thayer Hotel is the only 'real' hotel in an area filled with mostly motels. The hotel's lobby and views of the Hudson River are beautiful. We had a very nice large and clean room. The staff throughout the hotel was very friendly. We dined in the hotel's restaurant twice; the food was OK, but as a vegetarian, I wished there was a better selection for me on the menu. Hotel visitors should include a tour of the nearby West Point Military Academy ---- a great insight to America's early history. read more
