We were there for a wedding and stayed two nights. No complaints the room was clean and bathroom was spacious. The keurig in the room was a nice surprise and valet parking was included. Kind of pricey though we ended up paying $430 for two nights including all taxes. The area is nice we jogged around the installation but beware it is hilly! Thayer has a decent gym too but nothing spectacular. We were happy with the hotel restaurant too. The seafood buffet at macarthurs was excellent and the servers were very nice. It is reasonable for about $40/person. Also had some drinks at the tavern and it had a cozy atmosphere. The only negative thing I can think of was the train running through all day/night every few hours. It's loud but the hotel provides ear plugs! We didn't choose a waterfront room because they warn about the noise but we still heard it. I imagine waterfront rooms had it much worse! read more

The Thayer is one of our favorite places, anywhere. Most striking is the gorgeous architecture and the renovation that kept the spirit of the building intact while making it fresh and clean and modern. The unmatched view of the Hudson River and even the soft train whistle that comes through every once in a while add to the nostalgic aura. The front desk staff is always extremely friendly and accommodating ( all staff is, really.) The beds are so comfortable and the bathrooms clean and usually spacious. The food is very good and getting better each year and Patton's bar is a lively little treat. It is on the most famous military property in the world, so the people who are surprised that there is military memorabilia throughout the building make me chuckle. If I could change anything at all, I would add merch or a small shop that could offer some gifts or treats to take away; even small things like a coffee mug, one of the little pillows, a small make up pouch...little things to help us remember our stay here Or take home as gifts. Seems like it would be easy to add a few shelves to the little coffee shop (1926). We have watched the Thayer continue to strive to improve itself over the years, so it won't surprise me if we see this soon, too! read more

Stayed here 6/2015: This historical hotel offers incredible views of the Hudson River and the décor is impressive and stylish. I am sad to say that I have stayed here on two occasions: My father's and recently my mother's funerals. Nevertheless I have fond memories of the Thayer. The first time I stayed here I was 7-years old. I remember it pretty well. I came back with my family 43 years later and my children will also have indelible memories. The view from the rooftop patio is incredible and very kid-friendly. The burgers are really good. Service is average. We had family coming in most the night and the MacArthur room was very accommodating and allowed us to stay late. The food & service was excellent. We rented Hap Arnold Room for a reception and the food was good, the staff was excellent and the décor and views of the Hudson are priceless. Be sure to tour West Point and learn about the namesake of the Thayer Hotel. Rooms are very comfortable and well-appointed. Beds are very comfortable and had very nice linens. Some rooms have no view at all and others amazing views - so request a room with a river view if possible. read more

I had my wedding here recently, so this review is mostly about having events at The Thayer (although our guests and wedding party that stayed at the hotel had nothing but good things to say about the rooms as well). I wanted to have a brunch wedding with views of the Hudson River, and The Thayer was exactly what I was looking for. They were accommodating and always pleasant, even after responding to what felt like the zillion questions I had leading up to the big day. Stacey helped us book the space, and then Joanna took over to figure out catering and other day-of details. Everyone was very helpful and because of their involvement, the day went so smoothly. They kept things on time and made sure myself and the groom had everything we needed. I don't know how they did it, but they also ensured that we had an unseasonably beautiful 80 degree day in the beginning of May. Beyond the coordinators, the food was fantastic, the bartenders kept the drinks flowing, and the service was impeccable. For anyone considering the Hudson Valley as the place for their wedding, I would absolutely recommend it. Since we did brunch it was more reasonable than other places, but even the traditional dinner packages were less expensive than elsewhere, with incredible value. I've never actually spent the night here but have dined here on many occasions. Our latest dining experience was the Friday evening Seafood Buffet. We made reservations for a party of ten and we were promptly seated when we arrived. The selection at the buffet was excellent. Shrimp (Cocktail and Fried) various types of broiled \ grilled fish, crab legs, fried clam strips, sushi etc. Our only complaint was that the hotel's website advertised King crab legs, the crab legs that were being offered the night we were there were far from "King" and more along the lines of peasant crab legs. All in all we had a good time. The Hennepin on drought at the bar was a welcome addition. read more

We bought the New Years Eve package, which included an over night stay. The Thayer is a beautiful and of course historic hotel. Our accomodations, room over looked the Hudson River, were perfect. The cocktail hour was adequate, and we enjoyed the open feature of being able to take out drinks out to the lobby and fireplace. Dinner was very good and service was even better. The waiter and staff were very attentive and ensured out evening was festive and celebratory. Our only complaint was the DJ. His song selection was frequently inappropriate and more than once caused dancing guests to abruptly leave the dance floor. We and other guests wanted to bring in the new year dancing, but wound up shaking our heads at why the DJ was playing AC/DC's back in black. Suggest you consider hiring a different DJ. read more

Not sure what the hype is about this place. Old castle did I say OLD? Walls are wax paper you can hear everything. Heaters in rooms don't follow thermostat setting n you will feel like you are in a sauna. Can't sleep bc heat n noise. The restaurant is horrible overpriced food. The service is slow n staff is rude. Alex in the bar is this places only saving grace. Not worth the hype but in small town with nothing else I guess you are limited. read more

If you're looking for a nice hotel THIS is not the place to go. It's definitely historical with prices that are from a 6 star hotel with 1 star accommodations . Food wise is basic... price wise you would think we would get orgasmic type cuisine. Lady at front desk said all their rooms were "Nice"... obviously she's never been in Nice Hotels. Our rooms looks like a room from a bed and breakfast with the view of a roof top. Real Nice. I admit service wise most employees were nice, but thats as far as this goes. If you're handicap not so friendly... but they are a 200 year old hotel. WE were forced to pay $2400 for 4 nights due to graduation. They definitely know how to take advantage of the situation. I would stay somewhere nice and rent a car next time. It would be cheaper and a better experience. read more

I enjoyed an amazing brunch buffet, with attentive service! The vegetable fritatta was incredible!! And the belgian waffles with the sliced bananas in brown sugar syrup was certainly the highlight!! I had my wedding (ceremony and reception) here years ago. I selected it for two main reasons: The view (gorgeous Hudson Valley) and the food. I had the same basic set up they do for their Sunday brunch, which is pretty spectacular. Do try the brunch, and/or enjoy a drink at the bar and gaze off at the river. The building is lovely and perfectly fitting for the surrounding history of the US Military Academy. The rooms are large, but this is an older establishment, so they might not be as glamorous as you'd hope. read more

I have been a guest at the hotel 3 years in a row for an overnight stay for a conference. Beautiful grounds and the staff are all very polite. The rooms are very clean, and the beds and pillows are super comfortable. The only thing I see that has declined is the food. They must have a new chef, food was much better in the past. Attended Easter Brunch this past Sunday. Upon entry we immediately noticed the chaotic and haphazard approach to brunch check in. A line meandered throughout the lobby without a clear start and end point. There were no staff members or signage available to direct patrons as they entered the facility and as a result it was clear folks struggled to make sense of the madness. After a 30 minute wait to check in we were directed to our table. Once on the buffet line it became very apparent the staff was ill prepared to serve a buffet style meal in this room. A double service line was being facilitated and yet there were only enough serving spoons for one side of the buffet. The salad service area contained no plates and the one area where plates could be found, they were few and far between. I can not begin to adaquetly share my level of disappointment with this most recent experience. read more

I came here for years for Mother's Day brunch. Always phenomenal food buffet. So much to choose from at a $50 a head cost. Includes unlimited mimosas or champagne. Carving stations, waffle stations, vast dessert tables as well. I would recommend. It always beautifully looks over the Hudson. There are not many hotel options near West Point and we chose The Thayer despite the spotty reviews here and on TripAdvisor. We were very happy with our decision. This historic hotel is an absolute gem and can't/shouldn't be compared with new chain properties - it's not remotely in the same category and expectations have to be fair. The building is gorgeous and we enjoyed exploring the building and the grounds. Valet is necessary at The Thayer since the hotel is up on a hill and the parking is down below. The bellman were excellent and very accommodating. Check-in was great and we were given the lay of the land and all of the information we needed about the hotel and its amenities - restaurants, coffee shop, etc. The room lights are a bit tricky, but with an explanation at check-in, we figured them out quickly. We stayed in an Executive Suite on the top floor and were very pleased with our room/s. We had called ahead to let them know we would be using the Master bedroom, living room couch and Murphy bed as sleeping space - everything was made-up perfectly and awaiting our arrival. The suite was very nice and super comfortable for a family of four. Housekeeping was impeccable and it was our pleasure to leave a larger tip than usual. While we met other guests who were awakened by freight trains, we didn't have that problem; either the windows are better in the Executive Suites or the higher floor helped. Quiet and comfortable. I assume The Thayer is far more expensive during peak season, but we had an excellent stay and would highly recommend staying here when visiting West Point. read more

If you are in this area of New York City or you are planning a visit to West Point, there is not a better way to see it then by staying at the Thayer. I had wanted to see a West Point football game and I was lucky to acquire reservations to this fine hotel by using a little known secret... booking early... very early! I can't emphasize this enough, book early and always plan a few extra days. You might find yourself strolling around the gardens and tracing a path to where star crossed lovers carved their names on an old bench. You might even discover an obstacle course lurking along the pathway! The Thayer's setting is high on the bluffs overlooking the Hudson. This is an easy reminder as to why West Point (Fort Putnam) was such a strategic point during the Revolutionary War. It is also the place where Benedict Arnold tried to turn over the fort to the British. Although you can certainly walk the campus... if you are going to tackle the hills you might want to be in shape... or at least use a car where permissible. The "Mac Arthur" restaurant is superb and "Patton's Tavern" is a hoot. If you can arrange to have a sandwich at Grant Hall with the cadets, you will get the real flavor of the place. As for food, the local community also has more than enough choices.... but if you'd like to eat with the cadets and their visiting families, you must try out Schades Restaurant in the village of Highland Falls. The museum, the gift shops are all wonderful... but if you plan your trip right... try to take in one of the sporting events from fencing and boxing to football and basket ball and the Olympic sports. Whether traveling by yourself or with friends or family, it is a completely wonderful experience to visit West Point... and staying at the Thayer makes it complete. read more

Stayed at Hotel Thayer several times, most recently over the Christmas holidays for nearly one week. We were snowed in--temporarily--and had a blast anyway. The staff were helpful and friendly, even to the point of offering free sandwiches and soda during our snowed in days. The hotel was nearly empty but they still put themselves out to make us feel at home. Close to Tuxedo Ridge Ski Resort (30 mins drive) and a few others although we loved Tuxedo best. Pizza Restaurant just off campus was fast and pizza was NY's finest. Walking distance to Mc D's, Dunkin Donuts, and more. The food at Hotel Thayer was decent, a bit pricey however. The breakfast buffet needs a little oomph, nothing special. The lounge with dark wood interior and a fireplace is charming, and the best view in the house overlooking the Hudson. Love the history & charm of the hotel and enjoyed visiting the campus. Prices have crept up a bit but well worth the visit. Room was clean and decent sized but the location is what you are paying for. Recommended. read more

I think the Thayer Hotel in general is excellent. The New Year's Eve package was phenomenal! I happened to come across it at 5am, the morning of New Year's Eve. My husband and I are in our late 40's and we were desperate to find a package that included food, music and hotel room. We had spent two weeks, intermittently going back and forth with places closer to our home which includes White Plains. Nothing really seemed to be what we wanted. The Thayer hotel had a terrific all-inclusive package. Our hotel room was beautiful and overlooked the Hudson. We got there early to enjoy the view. The dinner dance was fantastic. The food was great. The DJ played all sorts of music but, basically dance music which we have a lot of fun doing. They had a champagne toast and the music continued until 2. The place was packed with people our age, in their 30's and older. Apparently, it is such a big place that, according to a couple we met who had been going the last 5 years, it accommodated at least 500 people-that was probably why we were able to get such a last minute reservation for the whole package!! The following morning included an amazing brunch that started at 11am. It was perfect!!! We were able to sleep off the festivities and then feast some more. Their Brunch is probably the best I have been too!! read more

Ate here for breakfast today and was extremely disappointed. What was billed as superlative, astounding, etc. was poor quality, flavorless and poorly presented. The buffet-$25 after tax and gratuity consisted of "Scrambled egg" which was actually just eggs whisked in a hotel pan, overlooked frozen sausage, burnt French toast, what seemed like day-old potatoes, a pile of bacon congealing in several inches of cold grease, and an apple pastry. Each of these were flavorless, poorly presented, and cold. There were also unripe fruits and stale breads. There was no omelette station as was promised. All was flavorless. Ugh! I regret staying at the Thayer on my wedding night. The service was absolutely horrible and the staff was rude to my wedding guests, my new husband and me. My parents left gift bags for our guests and the hotel just handed them out to anyone so most of my guests missed out and strangers received our presents. My parents made special gift bags for my groom and I, but we never received them. I have no idea who got them. When we called the front desk for champagne no one answered. There was no shampoo in the bridal suite. I'm not even sure they gave us the bridal suite, even though we specifically reserved it, because the room was tiny and there was no view of the Hudson River as promised on the website. The front staff desk was incredibly rude. I'm very disappointed and do not recommend this hotel to anyone, especially newlyweds. read more

In the past, brunch at the Hotel Thayer was excellent, combining old world glamour and really great food - sadly this was not our experience yesterday at the Easter Brunch My party of 12 had reserved for the 2:30 and waited upstairs with all the other patrons. .At 2:40ish we were brought to a nice room downstairs that had a lovely view but was full of people who had been seated at 2:00 - as we sat our waitress remarked "Oh here's my late table...?" That threw us off a bit but the servers were friendly, professional and worked hard to make sure we had everything we needed. The room had a really terrible organist playing too loudly - it seemed like a bad SNL skit - even piped in classical music would have been better. The majority of the food was just ok. There was: Hot table with brunch potatoes, scrambled eggs, a frittata, bacon, sausage, a pasta dish, a salmon dish and a chicken dish. Carving Station with Lamb / Beef. Made to order Belgian Waffles, Omelets Salad table, Peeled Shrimp. Smoked Salmon and Bagels & Cream Cheese Rolls/ Muffins/ Croissants. Dessert Table (It's brunch for a 1000 people so I was realistic in my expectations) but some was so very bad. A few of the things that drove me nuts: They kept running out of plates, bowls on the buffet - several times we had to wait 5-10 minutes for new plates and by 3:00 we were told there were no more bowls/ cups for the ice cream or fruit. The buffet the had a dish marked "Brunch Potatoes" which were formerly frozen quartered potatoes with red pepper and onions thrown on top - no seasoning - no flavor. It is so easy to make a quick decent potato casserole or even decent hash brown. A serving dish was marked crispy bacon / sausage and it that contained a pile of greasy soggy twisted bacon and sausage lying in a pool of grease. Just one server shared between making waffles and the carving station - causing a wait of 15 minutes for a waffle. Not sure what training the poor server had at carving (or if he was given a really bad knife) because he was seriously hacking the meat. The Lamb was beyond rare and I LOVE rare - the beef was really tough - both lacked even basic salt and pepper seasoning. A few soggy salads like beets& onions, cucumbers with dill / corn & black bean but no green salad. The room was set up strangely - the bagels and lox were on table past the deserts... along with the apple dumplings. They were lacking proper serving utensils for some items - patrons had to dish ice cream up with a big spoon - no ice cream scoop available. I asked - they said they did not have one. Only chocolate ice cream - no vanilla (which would have gone better with the apple dumplings/ pie), no whipped cream... Cake table did not have a knife /server for each cake so you would have cakes getting all mixed flavors. A "crock-pot" full of melted chocolate but no bowl / cup to put it in to allow you to dip the strawberries .Maybe because we were the last seating we got the short end of everything but the majority of the food was just ok and for $50 per person I expected better. read more

This hotel is a nightmare. They lied to us yesterday about calling ahead today at noon to check into our room BEFORE 4P. No apology. Now we can't check in until 4pm for a wedding at 4pm. Mother's Day Brunch was absolutely horrible. If you want to feel like cattle at feeding time eat Brunch at the Thayer. The lobby was full of people and this woman comes out with her hand in the air like she's loading a Seniors Tour Bus and yells for the 200 plus people to get on line at the podium. It was 80 degrees people were sweating in nice clothes, mom's chasing bored kids and seniors leaning against walls and sitting on stairs because there weren't enough chairs. We got to our table after 30 minutes of waiting and running after our hungry kids and of course there were no highchairs that we requested. So we had to hold down our kids again while we waited. The silverware was dirty. The waiter was nice, but scarce, we tipped him very well out of habit. They had enough food for 60 people and there were about 300 in the room by that point. The plates ran out in 10 minutes and were never replaced. They had 8 small chafing dishes in the middle of the room and you couldn't get near them and if you did they were empty. I don't enjoy fighting for food so I ended up with some fruit and veggies before the food ran out. There was one person manning the omelet station and the waffle station so needless to say I had to feed the kids when we got home. Which was fun because the cheap champagne gave me a headache for the rest of the day. We were never offered coffee. I flagged down a waitress who was very bothered and poured my mom coffee and walked away in a huff leaving no cream. They put out one dinner plate of cookies for the entire room and 5 plates of whipped cream, shoprite quality cakes. The pregnant lady next to us was livid about that. They were never replaced. One plate, maybe 8 cookies, 300people. I have to say in all the years that I waitressed in college and all the service I've received this was the absolute worst. My polite mother couldn't even reign it in and slipped out a few, " I guess you're paying for the historic building." I don't know how this place can stay alive with what they have to offer. They want your money but they don't want to give you anything for it. read more

Absolutely blew it. The Thayer was my go-to choice, being close to the events for our coming West Point reunion, to better support my family and their needs. On the day of the opening of the block of rooms dedicated to our alumni, they were unable to handle the demand and over 50 of us that had confirmed reservations later had our rooms cancelled. Completely unacceptable. I've stayed in hotels on six continents, and traveled with POTUS during a prior job - I have plenty of experience with high level hotel staff and what reasonable expectations are. We just had our wedding here. It was an amazing weekend. We and several of our guests checked in on Friday and we didn't leave until Monday, it was just a wonderful weekend. Let's start at the beginning - Gina and Brianne in the sales department were wonderful. We set-up a couple of meeting, looked through the space and each time we sent an email (with many questions), it was answered in a timely manner. Food - Chef Chris is incredible. So much good food. Our guests couldn't stop talking about how great the food not only in the restuarant, but at both the cocktail hour and reception. We chose this venue because of its beauty and historical significance, but also the price we got was so much better than anything we were trying to do in the city. Having a winter wedding you are always concerned about weather, so having everything - ceremony, reception, and place for people to stay all in one building was a real positive note, not only for us, but both our families. Also, everything that is included from the food and bar to the linens. It really cut down on the number of vendors we have to work with. The front desk staff was great and helpful, especially with our guests checking in and out all weekend. I had a cousin who had an issue with her dress and they even took care of that for her. So why not 5 stars - Here are the small (very nit-picking) things that happened. 1) the reservation line - there were many inconsistencies when our guests called in to make a reservation in our room block. For example, a cousin called getting two rooms and he was told by a rep that there were no more queen rooms. His mother called 10 minutes later, spoke to a different rep and was able to get a queen room no problem. We had to make several corrections on room size, price, and dates of reservation. They should figure out a way to do this reservation online. I think it would streamline the process. 2) while the room we got was lovely, was it a bridal suite? What is shown online and what we got were not the same thing. As I said, our room was great, but advertising might be off. 3) our day of maitre-d was not as "on the ball" as everyone else we worked with was. It seemed that he didn't read any of the notes prior to our rehearsal. I think this because the first question asked was, "how many in your bridal party?" (the information was provided and reviewed with management). He also missed several details that we put time in to creating that were then not there during the reception. One my guests called him "unprofessional" in the way he spoke to guests and another called him "mediocre." With those three things said, we had an incredible experience planning and executing a beautiful wedding and thank the great people at The Thayer for making it a wedding we will never forget. The Thayer Hotel was an amazing spot for a wedding. They were able to handle the stress of large groups and make our (I say this loosely as I was a bridesmaid) wedding weekend perfection. Although there was a slight hiccup when we got to the Eisenhower Suite and it was not cleaned, the cleaning ladies and management swooped in and by the time the cars were unloaded, the suite was ready for getting ready! The property of this historic hotel is just gorgeous... it personified autumn and a classic campus feel. The brick and stone exterior leads to the old fashioned, gilt interior with many antique paintings and furniture. The staff was friendly and accommodating to all of the guests... most of the time. I did observe a couple of instances when the reception was frustrated with the guests. They were very strict about the amount of guests staying in each room. The price for each room did seem steep but the rooms were very luxurious and there was plenty of room and a beautiful view of West Point. I would definitely recommend booking in advance, since I procrastinated and had a hard time getting a room, even with the block of rooms that were reserved for the wedding. We spent the night of the wedding (after the reception) in the bar- they have both a beautiful historic bar in the lobby and a more casual rooftop bar. the lobby bar, with it's overstuffed chairs, made me feel like ordering a whiskey on the rocks... and then smoking a cigar on the rooftop. But, since I don't do either of those things, I settles for an excellent martini made by a friendly bartender who engaged us in conversation about Mary and pat's wedding. He was very genuine, as were the other bartenders, even when the bar got busy. Overall, the wedding here was gorgeous and their hospitality was excellent, for the most part. We stayed here on a Monday for a conference we had at West Point on a Tuesday. The grounds are gorgeous, the architecture is beautiful. However, our room was subpar for the price we paid, the heating system let out a smell if it ran too long and the housekeeping wasn't what I expected. Customer service was inattentive and dismissive; we had to escalate our concerns to a supervisor. We did enjoy a few nice meals and service at the restaurant. Overall, it was an ok stay. read more
