    Monte Cristo

What an unexpected gem! From the outside, this is just a bar but lemme tell you, the food is so much more than that! We started out with the Gnome Hats, (sorry, no pic...only eating, ha!) they were a basic fresh jalapeño popper, however, the honey on top really added a delicious sweetness that was lovely! I also got the Gnome-a-Rita, which packed a refreshing tropical but still classic margarita punch! For entrees, my hubs got the Southwest Burger which is so trenched in queso that in his words "made the bun disintegrate." This however DID NOT reduce his enjoyment of the burger, this is just an FYI if you consume it, the cheese is all encompassing and will drop, drop and cover all things in the immediate vicinity with its cheesy goodness. You've been warned. I got the stuff of dreams, but only the best dreams, the highly sought and very rarely found unicorn sandwich, the Monte Cristo...and I gotta tell you, this one did not disappoint. Did they build a beautiful sandwich, batter and fry it? NAY NAY, they built a beautiful sandwich, quartered it, bartered and fried it. Allow me to elaborate on the distinction...each one of these quarters became a beautiful quad of cheesy, warm, slightly sweet perfection. You didn't have to worry about anything sliding out of the batter or getting cold. And it had a side of apricot preserves instead of the tradition raspberry which I found wonderfully complimentary. We both found the fried to be cooked to perfection and seasoned well. And honestly, we will be back here for sure. How could we not be? I can't shut up about this sandwich! *editing to add that I don't remember the name of our server but she was lovely! She didn't hover but was there whenever we needed anything at all. She has input and definitely had excellent recommendations! She was also working her tail off both behind the bar and on the floor! The ambiance is definitely just a nice bar but lemme tell ya, it's worth the visit cause just a nice bar with excellent food means you found a killer bar!!

Walked in on Friday night around 545. First time here, the place is pretty big with pool tables on one side, the bar in the middle, tables for eating on the other side, there wasn't a hostess stand so we saw Chrystal and she told us we could sit anywhere. Chrystal ended up being out server for the night, she promptly greeted us and gave us our menus and took our drink order. I ordered a Yeungling on draft, they only have the lighter version Flight, not the lager, but they did have the lager in a bottle. We ordered the gnome caps (fried mushrooms) very good, not too greasy and the breading was wonderful. We both ordered the Friday night special Prime Rib, mashed potatoes, green beans with a side salad. The side salad had romaine lettuce with shredded cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and croutons, so much better than others I have gotten elsewhere. The prime rib was cooked to perfection, the mashed potatoes are homemade with a delicious white gravy and the green beans had plenty of bacon. All in all a great experience, I would definitely go back.

Monte Cristo? Say what? The first time I heard this name I thought they were talking about a Chateau in the French Alps! But alas, no, they were speaking of a sandwich. But as I dug into it more deeply, I realized that it is nothing more than French toast stuffed with ham and cheese then dusted with confectionary sugar and served with apricot jam. I was skeptical! But then a post appeared in KC Northland Eateries asking about them and the name of the Thirsty Gnome came up along with some pictures. And after that poster shared their revue with the group, and with the assurance of the poster that it really was tasty! I was still skeptical! So, today I went to visit the Thirsty Gnome and to sink my teeth sandwich that others have raved about and that I still had reservations about! The others were right, and my reservations have been laid to rest! Like others have said, because of a post in this group I have tried something new, and I am happy because of it! Well done, Thirsty Gnome! Well done indeed! With no more skepticism of Mote Cristo's I am eating something new on a Friday afternoon, and life is good!

Great Northland bar! Perfect for Game Day! It's so spacious. Clean and tons of seating. The food is SO good. I recommend the fish and chips. This is going to be the best spot to watch a game in the Northland: Sporting and Chiefs!

The Thirst Gnome is a fantastic bar/restaurant that frequently has live music. The food is excellent and both drink and food prices are reasonable. The staff and owner are very friendly and really take care of their customers. We've been there twice and will definitely go back.

It's a smaller, simpler cocktail menu and the prices are very fair compared to other cocktail spots. I tried the Caipirinha (pineapple) and the Negroni sour. Both were good. Second I tried the Neo Cosmo (white rum, strawberry, cacao, coconut, rose hip, lime, bubble) which was good and was a fun drink with an ice cream shaped cup and a bubble on the top (meant to look like an ice cream cone). If you are in the area, this bar is a must try, the bartenders were awesome and took good care of us. Between the creative cocktails, fun atmosphere, unique floral setting, this was a memorable experience I'd definitely return for.

And that's okay, because my husband had the Wagyu beef burger just to ease your concerns, and he said it was absolutely fabulous. Or at least his empty plate did. That changed yesterday, when Diana Condori, the bar manager, was named a 2026 James Beard Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service semifinalist. As we love supporting restaurants and bars that receive that kind of recognition, my wife and I headed to Fern Bar that evening. I was especially curious what exactly a "sugarcane and agave bar" meant. We arrived around 5:30pm and found only a handful of guests inside. After congratulating the bartender who first served us, he mentioned that Diana was working that night and would stop by to meet us. During our conversation, Diana shared that she didn't even know she had been nominated. She woke up Tuesday to a call from owner Bryan Arri, who said he had big news and was coming over. Her first thought was that something terrible had happened--like the bar had burned down. Instead, he showed up with coffee and told her she was a James Beard honoree. Diana is originally from Bolivia and has lived in Kansas City most of her life, with the exception of time spent in San Francisco during the pandemic. She further refined her cocktail craft through local pop-ups in Kansas City under the name Condor's Cove. When Bryan was preparing to open Fern Bar, he reached out to bring her onto the team. The printed cocktail menu immediately reminded me of the Monarch and the Mercury Room--not surprising given Bryan's background at Manifesto and the Monarch. Thoughtful, intentional, and clearly designed for people who appreciate serious cocktails. We planned on having one or two drinks but ended up staying for three, thanks to an outstanding lineup and a memorable conversation with Diana. We tasted: * No Fly Zone - Rum, agave, pineapple foam * Mr. Collage - Smooth, elegant, egg-white cocktail * Three Negroni Lunch - Bitter, boozy, and beautifully balanced * Pendergast No. 4 - Complex and spirit-driven * It's Bananas - Banana liqueur with bright tropical notes * Off the Rails - Creative and well-executed rum/agave cocktail One downside of many cocktail-forward bars is the lack of food, but Fern Bar offers two varieties of mini burritos for $4--just enough protein to keep things balanced while indulging. Great concept, exceptional service, and truly memorable drinks. Check it out--and be sure to say hello to Diana.

Definitely gives you the quantity of food, but from a quality standpoint, the bun didn't really speak to me. The seasoning of the burger didn't really speak to me, nor did the sauce on it. It was okay, it was just okay from that standpoint. So when you talk about the fries, I also say that it's a three out of five. The sauce is good. The crunch of the waffle fry is there. They're not overcooked or undercooked or anything like that, but they just don't give, oh my God, if you will. The chopped up smash burger isn't really chopped up as much as you would think. It's more of a patty with a couple chops where it needed to be more thoroughly chopped and spread across, if you will. It's definitely filling.
