    Monte Cristo

What an unexpected gem! From the outside, this is just a bar but lemme tell you, the food is so much more than that! We started out with the Gnome Hats, (sorry, no pic...only eating, ha!) they were a basic fresh jalapeño popper, however, the honey on top really added a delicious sweetness that was lovely! I also got the Gnome-a-Rita, which packed a refreshing tropical but still classic margarita punch! For entrees, my hubs got the Southwest Burger which is so trenched in queso that in his words "made the bun disintegrate." This however DID NOT reduce his enjoyment of the burger, this is just an FYI if you consume it, the cheese is all encompassing and will drop, drop and cover all things in the immediate vicinity with its cheesy goodness. You've been warned. I got the stuff of dreams, but only the best dreams, the highly sought and very rarely found unicorn sandwich, the Monte Cristo...and I gotta tell you, this one did not disappoint. Did they build a beautiful sandwich, batter and fry it? NAY NAY, they built a beautiful sandwich, quartered it, bartered and fried it. Allow me to elaborate on the distinction...each one of these quarters became a beautiful quad of cheesy, warm, slightly sweet perfection. You didn't have to worry about anything sliding out of the batter or getting cold. And it had a side of apricot preserves instead of the tradition raspberry which I found wonderfully complimentary. We both found the fried to be cooked to perfection and seasoned well. And honestly, we will be back here for sure. How could we not be? I can't shut up about this sandwich! *editing to add that I don't remember the name of our server but she was lovely! She didn't hover but was there whenever we needed anything at all. She has input and definitely had excellent recommendations! She was also working her tail off both behind the bar and on the floor! The ambiance is definitely just a nice bar but lemme tell ya, it's worth the visit cause just a nice bar with excellent food means you found a killer bar!!

    Prime Rib special

Walked in on Friday night around 545. First time here, the place is pretty big with pool tables on one side, the bar in the middle, tables for eating on the other side, there wasn't a hostess stand so we saw Chrystal and she told us we could sit anywhere. Chrystal ended up being out server for the night, she promptly greeted us and gave us our menus and took our drink order. I ordered a Yeungling on draft, they only have the lighter version Flight, not the lager, but they did have the lager in a bottle. We ordered the gnome caps (fried mushrooms) very good, not too greasy and the breading was wonderful. We both ordered the Friday night special Prime Rib, mashed potatoes, green beans with a side salad. The side salad had romaine lettuce with shredded cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and croutons, so much better than others I have gotten elsewhere. The prime rib was cooked to perfection, the mashed potatoes are homemade with a delicious white gravy and the green beans had plenty of bacon. All in all a great experience, I would definitely go back.

Monte Cristo? Say what? The first time I heard this name I thought they were talking about a Chateau in the French Alps! But alas, no, they were speaking of a sandwich. But as I dug into it more deeply, I realized that it is nothing more than French toast stuffed with ham and cheese then dusted with confectionary sugar and served with apricot jam. I was skeptical! But then a post appeared in KC Northland Eateries asking about them and the name of the Thirsty Gnome came up along with some pictures. And after that poster shared their revue with the group, and with the assurance of the poster that it really was tasty! I was still skeptical! So, today I went to visit the Thirsty Gnome and to sink my teeth sandwich that others have raved about and that I still had reservations about! The others were right, and my reservations have been laid to rest! Like others have said, because of a post in this group I have tried something new, and I am happy because of it! Well done, Thirsty Gnome! Well done indeed! With no more skepticism of Mote Cristo's I am eating something new on a Friday afternoon, and life is good!

Great Northland bar! Perfect for Game Day! It's so spacious. Clean and tons of seating. The food is SO good. I recommend the fish and chips. This is going to be the best spot to watch a game in the Northland: Sporting and Chiefs!

The Thirst Gnome is a fantastic bar/restaurant that frequently has live music. The food is excellent and both drink and food prices are reasonable. The staff and owner are very friendly and really take care of their customers. We've been there twice and will definitely go back.

The service manager saw us eyeballing the menu on the board and answered out questions, then invited us in. My family of four was sat in a booth in the middle of the restaurant with good visibility around the entire establishment. Ambiance was good, considering that its not inherently a family place. Old tap pulls adorn the ceiling and the light is just bright enough to not strain your eyes, but not so bright that there is glare off every surface. I ordered a cowboy coffee (espresso with tequila, very interesting) and a waffle smash burger sandwich. The table got fries as an appetizer and some kind of fried donut thing that I could have sworn was a Zeppole. As always, let's start with what was good... The appetizers were very good. The dips on the fries were both amazingly good. So much so that I used them on my side of fries after the kids ate all the ones in the basket. The waffle smash burger had a good flavor considering I had never paired a waffle with beef. Prices were agreeable for Westport, but its Westport so there is a slight premium. Servers were pretty much everywhere, so it was never too long for any request we had to be taken care of. On the flip side of that, there was a server doing side work dead center of the restaurant which was kind of awkward. I am used to seeing side work done in somewhere inconspicuous so it was just a little odd, but not off putting. Now let's look at the things that could be better... The dipping sauces for the Zeppole were not thick enough to actually stick to the delicious treat. The berry sauce really needed to be reduced further because it was too thin by far. Delicious, but thin. My waffle for the smashburger sandwich was too oily by far. I think this may have been an intentional choice considering that the waffle serves as the "bun" for the sandwich and maybe the oil was an attempt to keep the juice from the burger and the sauces from turning the waffle into mush. It worked... but it did take away from the flavor by obscuring the taste of the waffle itself. My egg was cooked to specification, so that's a win, but my partner's egg was overcooked. Consistency! Very important and yet not guaranteed, I think. The biggest problem I have with the brunch at Beer Kitchen though isn't the food, but the menu itself. There is not any way to construct a decently priced "simple breakfast." If you're not that hungry, or adventurous, you may find the menu difficult to contend with. I would consider adding something like "the Oldtimer" and have it be two eggs, a meat, toast, and fruit. Price it at 13.99 and leave it alone. Overall, the Beer Kitchen is a nice little brunch spot. So much so that we intend on making it a semi-frequent stop for us on days when the kids want to venture down towards the Plaza. 4 stars. Has room for improvement but is a solid experience for what you pay.
