Came to Kansas City over the recent holidays to visit some friends, and Beer Kitchen came as a local recommended place. Good food, good vibes, good beer selection, I was sold. So we loaded up and showed up one day around Noon. Ambiance was really cool. It's in the middle of some sort of progressive looking shanty-esque suburb. The kind of place that does drag queen bingo. I was right at home. Inside was college sport bar, but with a nice, huge board on the wall of all their beer selection. It Was quite expansive. Service was top notch, too. Nice server took care of us, made sure our glasses were never empty. The food came out at a good clips, and we got an unexpected bonus of free little beignet-like donuts with some delicious dipping sauces. As for food, we started off with a jumbo order of the Truffle Parmesan Hand-Cut Fries for the table. We got to choose two from their extensive list of aioli dipping sauces. Fries were good. Dusted with the perfect amounts of truffle and parmesan. And the sauces were my oh my. I recommend paying the upcharge to just try them all. I mentioned the time earlier, because we had no idea we were stumbling upon their brunch menu. Even more options to choose from! I got the Crispy Waffle Smash Burger (smashed hertzog beef patties, fried egg, smoked bacon, merkt's cheddar, caramelized onion, maple aioli, crispy buttermilk waffle). This thing was really nice. Perfect waffle, not too small, not too big, and no oily or anything obtrusive. A nice bun option. Eggs and bacon sometime get lost against giant burger patties, but with these smash patties, the extra accoutrements really stand out and make this burger really stand out in my mind. I also for the try the Smokestack Burger (smoked burnt ends, smoked gouda, whiskey bbq glaze, pickle relish, chipotle aioli & crispy jalapeño straws). Uhhh, as you can read, this thing was loaded with goodness. Fatty burger, smokey burnt ends, sweet boozy glaze, acidic pickles, and texture from that jalapeno. This was the perfect burger. I insist you order this. Overall, my research did not reveal Beer Kitchen to me, locals recommendation did. Shows that you gotta use your street smarts instead of your book smarts sometimes. We dropped into Beer Kitchen on Mother's Day for a brunch after learning that the Westport Cafe had its reservation book slammed for a month and was searching for an alternative. The service manager saw us eyeballing the menu on the board and answered out questions, then invited us in. My family of four was sat in a booth in the middle of the restaurant with good visibility around the entire establishment. Ambiance was good, considering that its not inherently a family place. Old tap pulls adorn the ceiling and the light is just bright enough to not strain your eyes, but not so bright that there is glare off every surface. I ordered a cowboy coffee (espresso with tequila, very interesting) and a waffle smash burger sandwich. The table got fries as an appetizer and some kind of fried donut thing that I could have sworn was a Zeppole. As always, let's start with what was good... The appetizers were very good. The dips on the fries were both amazingly good. So much so that I used them on my side of fries after the kids ate all the ones in the basket. The waffle smash burger had a good flavor considering I had never paired a waffle with beef. Prices were agreeable for Westport, but its Westport so there is a slight premium. Servers were pretty much everywhere, so it was never too long for any request we had to be taken care of. On the flip side of that, there was a server doing side work dead center of the restaurant which was kind of awkward. I am used to seeing side work done in somewhere inconspicuous so it was just a little odd, but not off putting. Now let's look at the things that could be better... The dipping sauces for the Zeppole were not thick enough to actually stick to the delicious treat. The berry sauce really needed to be reduced further because it was too thin by far. Delicious, but thin. My waffle for the smashburger sandwich was too oily by far. I think this may have been an intentional choice considering that the waffle serves as the "bun" for the sandwich and maybe the oil was an attempt to keep the juice from the burger and the sauces from turning the waffle into mush. It worked... but it did take away from the flavor by obscuring the taste of the waffle itself. My egg was cooked to specification, so that's a win, but my partner's egg was overcooked. Consistency! Very important and yet not guaranteed, I think. The biggest problem I have with the brunch at Beer Kitchen though isn't the food, but the menu itself. There is not any way to construct a decently priced "simple breakfast." If you're not that hungry, or adventurous, you may find the menu difficult to contend with. I would consider adding something like "the Oldtimer" and have it be two eggs, a meat, toast, and fruit. Price it at 13.99 and leave it alone. Overall, the Beer Kitchen is a nice little brunch spot. So much so that we intend on making it a semi-frequent stop for us on days when the kids want to venture down towards the Plaza. 4 stars. Has room for improvement but is a solid experience for what you pay. read more

We got brunch, but we didn't even know they served brunch, so that was a huge bonus. The food was out of this world delicious. And their beer selection was great, too. Stopped in around 12:30 on a Wednesday during Restaurant Week since I had the day off and wanted to finally try Beer Kitchen. They did not disappoint. I was not in the mood for beer and it was still fairly early, so I focused on the food and stuck with water for my first course. I started with the chicken thigh fries. They were delicious, just spicy enough, and came with a fantastic dipping sauce. The portion was extremely generous. I would have liked them slightly crispier, but they were still hot, flavorful, and very satisfying. For my main course, I ordered the smashburger and it was excellent from the bun to the patties. Everything worked together perfectly. I added the Parmesan truffle fries and those were also fantastic. I also enjoyed the ketchup flight. The barbecue ketchup did not do much for me, but the classic ketchup and the chipotle ketchup were both great. The restaurant was fairly noisy, but since I was dining alone it did not detract from the experience. Service was fast and friendly, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. It felt like a cool neighborhood spot, and I am glad I am staying nearby while traveling. Overall, a fantastic experience. Now if you will excuse me, I think it is time for a nap. Take out experience: We were greeted by friendly faces and taken care of promptly. The bartender was very kind taking our order and offering us drinks while we waited for our takeout food. We came here to try their weekly sandwich special, the short rib, grilled cheese. There was not much to brag about with the sandwich, as it tasted just like a slightly fancy grilled cheese, but did not have much flavor from the short rib itself. Stopped in for happy hour. I almost always stop by when I'm in Westport, mainly for a quick beer. Every time I've been here it's usually pretty busy. Not overly packed but not empty either. They do have bar seating and tables. Service has always been lovely. They do have food and most of it looks pretty good. I'll have to return to have a proper meal sometime but on my last visit I did try the pretzel twists. They were good but nothing mind blowing. The mimosa carafe was a good ratio of champaign to orange juice. The Bloody Mary was perfectly spiced and thick. The beer list was endless!! The gluten free mac and cheese was 11/10 good. Highly recommend. The non gluten free people even said it tasted good- that's how you know it's good! The crispy waffle smash burger was a great meal meant perfectly for brunch. Girlfriend and I decided to try a random place in kc and decided on Beer Kitchen. They don't call them damn good burgers for nothing! I had the smokestack my girlfriend had the brickhouse we were both thoroughly impressed with our meal. I think this is my new favorite burger it was so damn good. This was our first time going to Kansas City. We were staying in Westport and we decided to take a walk in the snowstorm in the first place we came to was the beer kitchen. Immediately when we walked in the bartender Steven greeted us and made us feel like long lost friends. We decided to sit at the bar because we loved Stephen's energy. Came in on a Sunday around 12:30. Plenty of parking around Westport. They were serving brunch, I was looking for lunch but very happy with my decision when I saw the menu. I can't recommend this place enough ! My friend and I accidentally found this spot on accident after visiting the art museum while we were in town and we haven't stopped thinking about it since. This was my first time at Beer Kitchen. My wife came here back in 2018 before we even lived in Kansas City. She had a chicken and waffles and said it was very good. Tonight, I had a work group meeting here. It was very nice. Joe was our server and he was amazing and handled our table of eight people easily. No one wanted for anything. We need more restaurants like Beer Kitchen, period. Beer Kitchen offers the perfect elevated American bar food experience. They've got burgers, but they've got deviled egg toast. They've got fish and chips, but they've got butternut squash tacos. I had some friends and town and was looking for a spot with tasty food that wouldn't break the bank or be too stuffy - Beer Kitchen answers that with truffle fries and wild salmon bowls. They have a little something for everyone, with both a gluten free and vegan menu, and they have a killer happy hour with large food items - like 2 sliders for $6. Our server was kind and attentive, letting us try beers before making our selections. The space was comfortable and laid back. The only off-putting thing about this place isn't even true - when I hear "Beer Kitchen," I think Applebee's, Chili's, etc. It's giving franchise. But I think it's a standalone Gastropub restaurant concept, and therefore it's a standout in Westport 10/10 and will keep this on my list for any guests in town. read more

Recently visited first time with a large group. We were greeted promptly as well as seated. The waitress "Logan" was the best! She was attentive to all the guests and got the orders correct. The food was sooo good. The manager may have tried to run me over as I abruptly backed my seat out away from the table as he was rapidly walking by however I forgave him when he treated all our guests with a Hallmark Valentine :) I give this Westport restaurant a 12/10 and plan to attend for some Tuesday night Bingo someday!!! Beer Kictchen has evolved over its course of residence in the ever changing Westport landscape. For as long as I can remember, Beer Kitchen has remained a staple for hipsters as well as home-towners alike, making it a unique local destination for good grub. It used to market itself as a gastro-pub, but that's far too pretentious for what Beer Kitchen is, which consists of a casual bar restaurant that has a kick butt beer selection (though a tad overpriced) and even better food. When reviewing Beer Kitchen, I'm taking into account my countless visits. However, I must dwell for a moment on restaurant week. This year, I felt as though they could have done better with the timing and accommodations because I was visiting on a Saturday at 11:30am and was told only the brunch menu was being offered even though the dishes on the lunch menu were regular dishes on the everyday menu. So, I went with the burger I originally wanted, one I had tried many times before but I couldn't order it as the restaurant week special, which was a bummer. This time around, only one person out of four in our party went with the $20 restaurant week brunch special... which is quite sad. Their pick was the mini doughnuts, which we all shared, and they were quite delicious. But, my meal was from the traditional menu and is a tried a true, the Smokestack Burger. All in all, I do highly regard Beer Kitchen as one of the better restaurants that has lasted in Westport however, I will not be going during restaurant week again because I didn't think the menu was that creative or a good value. read more
