"Dive" is in its name, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. What you might not know is how great the food is and how much fun you'll have. I've been here a few times and absolutely love it. My type of place! I always enjoy a good dive bar, and Hi Dive Lounge has vaulted itself to my short list of Kansas City favorites. They have a good amount of seating, staff, and TVs and a nice little back patio as well. The biggest draw for Hi Dive is the "mystery beer" vending machine. Cheers to mystery beer! When you can order a cheap surprise there's something right about the night. You'd probably rather order it from someone who seems to care that you're there, however. We arrived to high expectations because the server who greeted us was not just friendly but actually engagingly hilarious. We thought, wow, we're in for a treat tonight! Then she got our drinks and then ... disappeared. Only to be replaced by ... no one. At least as far as we could tell. So we went to the bar to order and were treated fairly distantly. Not sure what was going on. We were a small group of middle-aged people, mostly women, so we weren't rowdy or treating the servers with disrespect. Have no idea what happened there. The bartender and manager were rude. They care more about money than customer service while working in the service industry. I told the bartender I wanted to TRY not BUY one of the beers to see what it's like. She served the full bottle in a glass and charged full price. I was nice enough to let that go and my kindness was then abused... I went across the street and came back and used the restroom all in less than 5 minutes. When I came back from the bathroom they already charged my card and added 20% for themselves. They would've received more and even more often if they waited, for 5 minutes or less. I could've spent more and become a regular without being closed out. The bartender was leaving her shift at that time and obviously just wanted to make as much as she could off of credit/debit cards before clocking out. I think she especially thought my card was credit since it has a MasterCard logo on it, but it's debit... She was caught when she confessed to still even have my card when I came right back. She wrote, "walkout" as one word on the receipt she handed along with my card. I obviously was NOT trying to "walk out" on the check when it was my 4th time there. And while there I was going in and out back and fourth of the bar within less than 5 minutes. I contacted the owner, Grant Nagule and haven't heard back. It doesn't seem like they care about customers besides their wallets here based on their behavior... Definitely don't go if you're paying with a card and have to get up to go to your car or the bathroom. You'll come back to a surprise tip charge. Also with the manager claiming is fair unless the customer thinks them "unworthy" of a tip... She simply didn't want to admit she was wrong and give proper customer service to make it right. It's NEVER right to write your own tip on someone else's card while they're going in and out of the be. One of my favorite bars in the city. They have also done the best job of any bar I've seen enforcing social distancing and capacity protocols. The highlight is of course the mystery beers for $2.50 all day every day. These are best enjoyed with friends. Each group has their own variation on games for how people get to choose their beverage but the gist is simple. You pay $2.50, the bartender hits the button on the 1970s soda machine and you get whatever comes out. It could be a yard beer, it could be a nice craft, or something really random. Cheap food, cheap beer and drinks, great place to watch games, always a good crowd, consistently excellent service, and the mystery beer machine!! The mystery beer machine is an old school pop machine that they load with a wide variety of canned beer, never knowing what you will get. You could end up getting a Genesse, Natural Light, PBR, Naturday, or many other lower shelf beers, OR you could end up getting an IPA, Lager, Brown ale, or other great craft beers. Either way, every mystery beer is only $2.50! On Sundays they have all TVs with volume on the Chiefs game, where they also serve $3 brats. If going out on a budget, this is your place. While it is considered a dive bar, I would put it above the typical dive bar and more a sports bar. The whole area along 39th is great, highly recommend! read more

That being said, I have no other quibbles with the Hi-Dive and plan to put it on my short list for go-tos. It's hard for me to reconcile this as a dive bar. In fact, I think it's really just a bar focused on the sport of diving. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon when it wasn't busy yet. Service was friendly and attentive. The beers, food selection, and happy hour prices are all-around top notch. That mystery beer is a fun novelty for cleaning out the beers that won't sell. My friend got a lemon shandy and ended up not hating it! I was inside for a couple hours, moved to the front deck when it cooled down, and enjoyed myself there so much I even took a shot and a selfie. If I'd had more time I would have gotten some food. In fact it is far from a dive bar, as was immediately evident, when I walked in and saw the bottles of quality wine and beer behind the bar. Got a glass of Poggio Anima Asmodeus Italian red wine blend. No way would that have been in a dive bar. Then got a bowl of the soup of the day, which was tomato basil. After I had added some crushed red pepper to spice it up, the soup was excellent. Also got the shrimp salad, which was really good, with surprisingly good shrimp. Yes, they have a pinball machine and TVs, but this is no dive bar. Hi-Dive is a neighborhood bar in the best sense of the term. This is a Gourmet restaurant (ok, well almost) under the guise of a Dive bar. Tucked along the street just East of KU, the decor is plan but clean and comfortable. They have a patio our back and in the front and they have Amber! Amber is a Gem (get it), who makes you feel at home and takes good care of you. She makes wonderful drinks and humorous small talk and really makes you feel at home. But the FOOD is the Star (OK, besides Amber) The menu is not huge, but covers all the bases for taste and appetite and everything is just Wonderful! Start with the house made chips with jalapeno dust and Blue cheese and bacon. Delicious (and not too spicy). All the sandwiches are extremely well made and remarkably tasty. The ingredients are fresh and high quality and honestly you won't find better food in Kansas City. The only reason I am telling you all this is we get there early enough to get our seats and you are on your own, but more than welcome to join the crowd in this neighborhood bar with food to die for.
